Dear Noveans,

Thank you for your patience while our team was fixing the server issues we had recently. Now that the server is back up and stable again, we've got some exciting news for you! We are thrilled to announce myDU, the standalone version of Dual Universe!

With the myDU client, you will be able to host your own Dual Universe server and/or connect to other players’ private servers. This version of myDU will give you the freedom to play Dual Universe without a subscription.

When creating or administrating a myDU server, you will be able to:

  • Grant yourself unlimited resources
  • Disable PvP or create a full PvP server
  • Choose to play solo or with a select group of friends

Please Note: While myDU will provide full access to Dual Universe, it does not include access to the Novaquark MMO server! You’ll need a subscription to continue to play on the Novaquark MMO server of Dual Universe.

The standalone version will be available in the coming weeks. (We are currently anticipating a mid-August release timeframe.)

We can’t wait to see you play myDU!

Not unexpected, I appreciate the idea.
Will the private servers have all the functionality of the "MMO" one (server hardware permitting obviously)

Will blueprints be transferable to the live server? That way you could use the private server as a creative mode feature. And even if you don't you will still be able to share your creations with the rest of the world.

I'm not sure if this is really good news.

I can certainly see this be the start of the sunset for the game as being hosted by NQ.. Frankly, it's obvious development ceased a long, long time ago anyway so it makes sense.
But yes, While they mention that a subscription will still be needed for the "MMO" server they host, I totally expect that server to not be around for much longer after the private servers arrive.

Thank you NQ.

This is the best news I've heard in some time. Normally games that are like this will never take this step and will just cease to exist because the online component is gone, but with this, you will have the ability to just continue on, effectively for free. And if someone ever went insane enough to do it, they could make a modding framework for this as well and then the possibilities are kinda boundless, like adding avatar PVP, XXXXL cores, massively increasing construct view distance, as long as the core technology supports it, it's probably possible with modding.

Not sure how to take that.

I pay a subscription fee in the hope that the game will stay in development and have new features/improvements.
I think this will kill the essence of DU.

I really hope this just means a change in business model. Paid expansion packs, or paid cosmetics packs (new engines etc) and continued support of the MMO side.

That said, this is great news for me as it means I can finally get my friends who are subscription adverse to try what I think is the single best voxel building game available.

@Cremora Pretty sure development of DU has ceased at least a year ago and I'd not expect anything from NQ anymore in that regard. In fact, I take this as a sign NQ will sunset the server on their end this year and just leave whatever happens in the hands of the community.

If the privately hosted servers will support modding and still allow for a considerable player count (provided you host on adequate hardware), There may be a good bit of life left in the game. If NQ will try and cash in on this and intends to sell the private server host without any further support or development (basically sell a dead horse) then I'm not sure this will do much, unless they charge maybe a one off $30 once for just the server. And then, that would not yield them much revenue at all.

I do wonder about the 3rd party licenses needed to run the server, of which I can imagine there are several. I know Unigine has a free community tier, but what about the others.

OH.. wait.. reading OP again.. This may not actually be a private hosted server setup at all. It feels more like a version of the client which will be able to accept a limited amount of P2P connections with other clients. IF that is the case, and we can't run a 24/7 server unless the client is up all the time somewhere that will mean yo must have a pretty hefty GPU as well on  the box running it to just run the client and that kind of kills the whole server idea..

We need more details..

That's it for Dual Universe. The game is over. Well, I am in Clean up mode waiting for what happens next. The people I see hyping community servers I do not believe have any experience running a community server. You need one Sugar Daddy that has Tech experience running the whole shebang, otherwise, forget it. Running a personal server would be a HUGE cost and resource hog, and then one day, some person disappears, and KA_BOOM!  it all dies. Not a sound plan at all. It was fun while it lasted but this game is now in palliative care waiting to die alongside Jimmy Carter. The ONLY way they could make private server tolerable for the players is if they SIGNIFICANTLY reduced the cost to play b/c right now the cost to play would NOT be worth a private server that could disappear any day and with no new R&D in the works to make the game interesting. It's just a private server maintaining the status quo with an expensive monthly price tag which will one day just disappear.

Not sure I classify this as good news....

On one hand that means some of us will still play at least part time. On the other to me this is a death knell for the game.

Some links to the download and data would be great.

A lot will depend on what NQ will actually deliver and I disagree running a community server is expensive or requires a lot of resources. I run several of them all the time, including a massive Space Engineers server with 6 nodes and I ran 5x5 ATLAS server as well as a multi-node Myth of Empires one.

Frankly, DU already does most of the work client side so I expect the server to actually not be all that complex or demanding resource wise at all. We'll have to wait and see, but especially if there is the possibility of mods and customizing how the server will operate. And if the database is open and easy to query, things may get even more interesting..

It is wait and see for now as the announcement really tells us next to nothing and seems to imply this could not even be a server based setup, but more a P2P system between clients which again would make sense seeing how the clients do most of the work already anyway.

Also, if there is any price tag for this, it will have to be $25 or less. But it feels like a final hooray for NQ who will drop this and then shutter the "MMO" server not long after I expect.

DU without single shard is pretty Minecraft.  Still better than giving Micro-$oft money though.
