Ving reacted to NQ-Ligo in INFO: DETAILED LUA API REVAMP
Hello noveans! As explained in the Mercury Lua devblog, the update is bringing too many changes to list them in such an article. We therefore decided to detail them on a separate thread for players interested in the details!

    LUA API CHANGES

In this post, we will then go through each API, one by one, identifying the new additions and changes in the alphabetic order.

    To list the general changes:
Added new `player` permanent slot. Represents the local player, usually called MasterPlayer in the API. Give access to name, id, nanopack mass/volume, headlight control, parenting, etc. Added new `construct` permanent slot. Represents the control unit construct, usually accessed through the Core Unit API. Give access to name, warp status, pvp status, more physics data, etc. Implemented new naming convention for events. Changed container content acquisition behavior to a fixed minimum inter-request delay of 30 sec. Added more item API support in containers and industry API. Added specialized API for all engine type elements, such as wings, adjusters, atmospheric engines, space engines, airbrakes, space brakes, vertical boosters, hover engines, rocket engines. Added Lua API for weapons Added Lua API for plasma extractor Re-enabled HDR color support for lights Added Lua left mouse click action for onActionStart, onActionStop and onActionLoop events, as "leftmouse". Replaced all string status values with integers for better comparisons and to be future-proof. Redesigned the Counter element API to make it more interesting. Redesigned the Telemeter element API to make it more interesting. Added several useful functions on different elements
I invite you at the same time to study the details of the changes in the posts of this thread to see all the subtleties!

As stated in the previous devblog, our goal is to remove all depreciation at launch. However, this will remain dependent on our ability to release the new flight configuration before then and on the feedback we get from our community.
In any case, we will keep you informed if this is retained at release.

    LUA API MOCKUP ON GITHUB!

In addition to that, we published a mockup of the API on our public GitHub.
We've made it as usable as possible, directly for use in Visual Studio Code, community tools, etc.
It's free to use, so please enjoy!

    https://github.com/dual-universe/lua-examples

The goal will be to update it with every major update we make for the future.

    CONCLUSION

I hope you will like these changes, from the more concrete to the more subtle ones. I can't wait to see what you'll create with all these additions! And I hope it will inspire you.
Thank you all for the support you have shown for this revamp, it encourages us to go further. Our goal is and will remain to offer you more and better Lua tools, so you can create your own content!

DACs had a monetary value quoted in the alpha packs, 18 euros, which partially justified the price.

So now they are only worth 7-9 euros? Are backers going to be given an increased allocation due to the devaluation?

Does not matter if it was kickstarter founder, backer or subscription money.
What is important is that players spent real money to play in a persistent MMO, as promised by NQ.

And it was NQ that made the decision to proclaim that the beta would be a "soft-release" and the "last wipe", so that they could start charging subscriptions for an unfinished game. And players have invested both time and money accordingly.

I don't care what others got thru exploits. I played legit grinded legit killed ships legit and don't feel like I was left behind or was not competitive in PvP. What I do care about is that the 2 years grind would be made a waste of time. What others got thru exploits was negated by anyone running missions. These were nerfed to the ground and no serious Missionrunner considers still fly any mission anymore. That means also no more Hauler kills for any PvP guy the rest besides missions can be warped. A surplus of sz roids and MU took away the need to go rare exotic roids for ores reduced chance for fights and kills for PvP players once again. So if you are a PvP player how would you feel if they take you earned kills in form of a graveyard away do you think that is fair ? Scripters can be day one selling scripts, Builders can sell BP. Just the progress of those that mined fought and traded is taken away. Once again is that fair?

I am against a wipe. The initial statement was that there won't be a wipe. So i started playing right from the start. I invested lots of time and money for different accounts in this game. And now the discussion of a maybe wipe is like a kick in the balls.
If NQ would have said right from the start they will wipe on release every1 would have  known. Now to change that is a no go.

I know many players who like me would stop playing cause after 2 years of playing and time investing in the game and now all gone and start from scatch sucks. I don't wanna wait to skill my chars back up and i don't want to rebuild all including ships and buildings etc.

So NQ should get their story straight. Don't sell us shit at Beta start and than change some of the main promises you made!

I got 9 paied accounts....those will be gone for sure......

    Just my 5 cents......

Replying to a bait posting, I should know better 🙂

But for me, no I'm not looking forward to it. For me the game is the things that I do once I have gotten myself to a place where I have enough quanta and materials to be able to do things, without having to worry about where the quanta/materials to do it are going to come from. Getting the materials for me is the chore I need to do in order to be able to play the game. Each time a major gameplay change comes, I need to spend time adapting to that (more chore), before I can settle in again to play. I'm just about over Demeter.

So do I want to repeat the grind process again over another year (I play slowly), just so that I can get to where I am now to let me actually (gasp) play the game? Absolutely not.

Your daily reminder that multiple NQ staff in multiple channels, verbally and in writing, said we would get 'magic blueprints' if they ever needed to do a wipe:

(1:30) the reason for a wipe would be "(there is) something that we need to fix and there is no other but to wipe to fix it. I don't see anything like that coming... it's something that would happen if we really had no choice..."
(4:45) "we're going to do everything we can so that we don't have to go through a wipe again"
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOp9nDzkxpc
(58:26) "It would be a very bad thing to say 'sorry guys, restart from scratch.'"
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ai3Kk37ntgg
(15:53) "Everything you build is forever"
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KD00-V_LKog
(31:58) "Whatever you do after beta starts is going to stay in one way or another... You will get what we call for the moment 'magic blueprints'... blueprints with everything included in it so you will be able to respawn the things as soon as we restart the server. So we don't like to call it 'wipe'... The key thing is the beta is really the start... You can start to invest yourself in the game. We guarantee that you're not going to be losing everything at some point... the universe is blank again, and you have to start from scratch."

Your delay in letting us know what was probably always going to happen is why the heart has gone out of the game for a lot of us and we need to digest this.  This will be my 3rd/4th but by far the worsed wipe.

In this beta we went from "no plans to wipe"to "wipe only if absolutely necessary" to "its something we are always discussing internally and no decision has been agreed" an now a post that obviously leads towards a total wipe!

Whilst you were leaving the bad news to the last minute knowing that a wipe was financially your best option, us mere mortals continued building bigger and better, trying not to let your indecision ruin the game.

There have been some amazing creations in this game that could be lost and even whilst building those we were constantly adjusting our ships to meet new build criteria. And training up skills so we could keep our cores. You even recently awarded prizes that will now be lost.

To cap it all, what about the original kickstarter promises? I wouldn't push for a pet but you stay silent on the rewards we were supposed to get In game. Ultimately I'm extremely disappointed in how we got to this stage.

You also have to accept that some long term players with good skills will leave but im sure you'll offset that with new paying players. But for goodness sake make the decision now so we can move on!!!! Don't delay this any more!

This. We were told at the beginning of Beta that it was a soft launch and there wouldn't be a wipe unless absolutely necessary, and we've been investing our time into the game based on this. I have spend hundreds, and hundreds of hours gathering resources and building, based on the knowledge that NQ would do everything they could to avoid a wipe.

A quanta wipe to re-balance the economy, is one thing, but wiping all our constructs and hard earned resources is a real kick in the nuts.

As far as re-freshing Alioth with new planet tech; you've already refreshed once without deleting constructs. Can this not be done again with the new planet tech, keeping the same basic geometry of the planet?

Judging from how biased the wording of the blog post was, I think they already have made a decision.

But they also know how problematic (on many levels) that decision is, so we get this song and dance number complete with red herrings like removal of schematics to try and put a spin on it and appease the masses.

Let's preface this: I'm a scripter, I own minimal assets in the game, and my main enjoyment comes from scripting. The wipe has a very small affect on me, but that won't change my opinion on how terribly reasoned it is here and terribly unnecessary.

Kurock's post says it all. They were so, so clearly biased in that post, it's like they already made their decision, and if our response is lukewarm, it will go through.

They ignore major, major points on the pros for the no wipe and partial wipe, and they put the full wipe with the most pros, but they all say the same thing: Simpler.
Based on how they did the other pros and cons, all they should have said was:

    Pros:
    Simpler for us to do
Schematics are what caused so many people to leave, and they have left. Your comment on schematics probably revolved around the idea that removing them would somehow bring those people back. Newsflash, it won't. They have moved on to other games. Personally, I don't own a single subscription game where I would return to subscribing after so much time has passed. BS you say about a wipe is somehow required for removing schematics. They're just an item.
Complete BS that you say you can't revamp planets.
Even greater BS you say you can't rebalance the economy... do you even look at your in game economy? One update and 10,000 m^3 of honeycomb goes from 100 million to 10 million. That is where it should be. The economy is perfectly, perfectly fine.

As Kurock said, leveling the playing field is a temporary concept that will disappear quickly. It's an MMO. You think someone who plays the weekends or once a month will somehow be on the same level as someone who plays several hours a day, every day, who knows the game already? Don't be delusional, please.

DU is not like a game where wiping should happen. You've already implemented plenty, and many will say too many updates that make it so wiping is completely unnecessary. HQ tiles, tile tax and construct abandonment over time, just to name the ones that come to mind.. Those are systems that work.
DU lives off player content, which is essentially what you're advocating to remove with a wipe. It's like saying: I let you build up my limbs over the last two years so I can crawl, and now walk. Now, I will chop them off for you so you can rebuild them better this time.
Your post is not an unbiased opinion on pros and cons. Fix it. It is misleading. Some people who read it will not think critically about what you just wrote. Who the hell thinks no wipe will only satisfy "some" long term builders and traders... are you... actually dumb? A significant majority is a better word there. You wanna know something? Your wishy-washy response mostly advocating for a wipe is why some people don't want to invest time into this. And it is because you even brought up a wipe. You sour the waters and poison the air with having the idea about, even more so by your extremely biased post.

You wanna see what I mean by a biased pro/con? Here's a great example:

As you can see, depending on where you cut the cake, you can say a lot and steer the narrative, bloating reasons and diminishing others.
This is, essentially what NQ have done with their entire post.

This is all I have to say in this, post, I've spent enough time writing out the obvious. Kurock said it in a neater package, but felt I should elaborate.

NQ I hope you will read this. Please do.

As for the first time ... NQ ... I'm really really really disappointed in you guys.
And this has nothing to do with the quality of the work you deliver to us. Please understand that. You have my respect for that.

    BUT

The only reason why your blogpost has been structured like this and that this update, which isn't an update, has been postponed for so much time, is because you know what you want and you can't say it. You try to find ways around it, but in the end, you will execute on it, as you usually do ...

NQ, you want a wipe. YES you want it .. just bloody admit it.

Don't act like there are options, as there aren't. Either you wipe or not, you know it, and you do not want to NOT wipe.
The whole post is structured to that end.

First of all, this hasn't been on the table since the start ... since the start the only thing which was on the table was a wipe IF (big if) there was a technical need for it (It has been stated like that in words, it has been in discord for anyone to see in text). I'm pretty sure if you explain me such a good reason I'm gonna understand it, likely sigh, but accept it. You knew if you had such a reason you would tell us.
On that premise you therefore kept people playing and investing in a game for which you needed those people playing that game. IF it had been on the table since the start, then it was a deliberate lie to keep us investing time. This is why I am disappointed, because you are essentially saying that you deceived me on purpose.

You act like a technical reason has now been found in removing schematics and improving certain planets. TBH those are non-reasons. They are excuses. You did burry half of the constructs in DU without a problem either. And, why would schematics be difficult to remove, it seems harder to introduce something like that than the other way around.
As a side note ... removing schematics as an argument for a wipe? Sounds like irony in the making. I hope you can see that.

So, NQ you want a wipe .. now tell me why?
Will you wipe again in 2 years? Do you think many of those old backers you mention that allegedly wanted a polished game will stick around, will be invested? This game has never kept people playing just because of polishing. It kept people playing because of a sense of building something towards something.
New players want to have a fair chance at release? So, in 2 years will new players have a fair chance, what about in 1 year? What about in 3 months? New players will never have a fair chance, instead now they will have a worse chance, noone is gonna hand out anything to ease their starters experience.

Nah .. you are right more people will try out the game believing they have a fair chance. But that will only work 3 months? At the most. Then, your wipe will have no longer an effect.
People requesting a wipe now, and not playing because they feel things are unfair, will stop playing again.

Now let me add some things you haven't explicitly considered:
    * Many active players have their experiences in the game, and have not much more to explore or do, if there is no value for them in the game they might not restart.
    * How many alts does one need when there is nothing around to manage. All active players likely will end up with fewer alts when the game starts. Many many of those alts are beta key accounts.
    * Why haven't you considered wiping only certain elements, like ship elements, and industry elements, and money? Keep the voxels? If there is no money to buy something, will you trade voxels for elements?
    * Why not considering inflation as a means to devaluate previous exploits.
There are many good solutions ... including a snapshot of constructs before today as a wipe baseline.

But it doesn't matter .. I knew this was coming .. I was hoping it would not ..
Great moment to reconsider things .. as you just announced ragnarok to me 😛.
