What is clear from last weekends city build is that there are people playing the game that enjoy the social aspect that cities provide. It is also clear that cities need planning, a government, law enforcement, garbage collection, entertainment, among a host of other things. All those "things" give players something to do. Some of it is sims in space, but some people like that kind of thing. If DU can get those kinds of people playing the same game as the space marines and quanta miners... it'd be the holy grail.

DU doesn't need reasons to build cities because people want to build cities. What DU needs are mechanics that cater to those people. It was touched on earlier, but in-game communications, yes I know discord, but in-game chat, especially localized, gets people closer together, it's social. Emotes, completely unnecessary, but again social. Trading, bartering, buying, selling, directly between in-game avatars, with goods and services that can't be magically obtained from terminals or email. There are players wanting to engage in those activities, just as there are players wanting to fly around and blow things up. I think there is room in the universe for both.

@Captain Jack Customer satisfaction is a top priority. There will indeed be some form of warranty as well as maintenance, repair, and logistics services.
But of course the exact details will depend on in-game mechanics yet to be deployed. Message me for more details.

@erichconvair I've already begun design work.

The first half of your post sounds awesome.  Welcome.

As for the rest.  It kind of seems like your setting up an argument where there isn't one.  If you like how DU is currently planning to handle PVP then awesome.

If you don't understand why people would seek to restrict a free form sandbox.  I can explain that.  It's because they aren't interested in PVP sometimes, or at all.

We don't exactly know everything about how PVP is going to work yet but it sounds like NQ has a pretty good plan to me.

But if the kind of sandbox that you are looking for requires 100% unrestricted PVP.  Then you're asking NQ to chase away an entire category of player just to provide cannon fodder for a specific type of PVP player.

That doesn't make sense to me.

Why do all PVPers have to be pirates anyway?

More PVPers need to step up and start roleplaying as mild mannered traders, who are secretly armed to the teeth.  What's the fun in attacking me while i'm trying to build something anyway?

All right, this topic is going to be locked.

Surprisingly all these "TheSlaxx" defenders are fresh new accounts.
Apparently some think it's okay to create accounts just to try to strongharm Novaquark's decision, even if this was already discussed and explained in private many times.
Making it public will NOT change Novaquark's decision. If someone opens another topic on TheSlaxx to try to change Novaquark's mind, expect your account to be banned permanently from the forum without further notice. We don't have time to waste on this topic anymore. This practice of coming back again and again on a decision made by Novaquark will only make the situation worse.

TheSlaxx hasn't been banned for the shady practices regarding the Organizations.
He has been banned for what he did after.
"He has changed now" will never be a valid argument to rehabilitate him.
If we make an exception for him, we will have to make exceptions for everyone else that has a toxic behavior.
    That's not gonna happen.

    Best Regards,

Well, they recently expanded safe zones to moons. That seems pretty real.

So lets just build another Eve and call it a day?  Why would you NOT want to cater to those players the same way the game caters to the hard core PvPer? Creative people don't need much (because they're creative). Just look at the recent city event. Most online PvP games are segmented anyway with the hardcore doing their super serious secret society thing, the small timers playing with their buddies, the lone wolves/griefers/gankers having their own version of fun. DU won't be any different in that regard, but it could be if it had a social/creative element where all those groups could mingle together from time to time. Bringing players together is something all MMO's, including DU is trying to achieve. The incentive is a larger player base, and a much more accessible game.

It might be that cities and population density should be a function of population size and paying customers. IE Large Orgs end up creating these things for their large memberships out of "blood and fire" (or space equivalent). So maybe it will come after. I kinda assumed it would come first, but it really depends on the game systems and how much agency of player combat and how intense competition is.

I do agree, creativity seems high ceiling in this game as you describe above but maybe a product of war as opposed to an alternative?
Yeah I think you hit the same idea as me: Cities being a product of org success as a consequence and suitably well organized and defended and functionally useful to the industrial-war-complex of the org itself and it's continual power projection?

Captain Jack reacted to Jinxed in Sandbox vs Themepark MMOs - What do you think?
I initially enjoyed Elite Dangerous due to the open ended sandbox nature of the game.  However, if I take the liberty of tediously stretching a metaphor to breaking point, the ED sandbox was literally a mile wide and only an inch deep and as for working tools, only a small spoon was provided.
There were scoops without handles, some didn’t even have a bottom edge, there were wireframe outlines of some toy earth-movers, a bit of paper that said, “this will be a bucket” and a photograph of a hose labeled “water”.
Literally nothing was fleshed out properly and still hasn’t been after three years.
And I haven’t even mentioned the open ended endless repetitive grind that pervaded every single aspect and the only interaction was to shoot stuff.

It was like a sandbox filled with tiny little repetitive FTP “amusement” parks.

The reason I chose to jump ship is because DU promises to allow the players to actually communicate meaningfully and achieve something together. A real sandbox with real tools and an incredible level of openness.

There's no shortage of land in DU... is there ?

If farming requires sizeable fields to grow crops, that could throw an entirely new light on the value of "good land" on planets. Barren planets would have to import food, etc., or could possibly grow crops commercially that don't do well on "earth-like" planets. Perhaps some exotic alien cactus-analogue has amazing medical applications !

If food and medical items become popular and sought-after in the game, then the means of producing the raw materials to make them can become a significant part of game play, and would provide an alternative to the current "mining is everything" scenario that DU will be starting with.

Agriculture and Forestry could also be used as a source for raw materials/chemicals needed in general industry, it doesn't have to be all about food and/or medicine. Various plants could provide sources of biofuels, acids, textiles, etc. that can be used to make and power ship elements.

Our civilization on Earth started with agriculture, after all.

My name Isaias I am a pretty avid video gamer and I came across this game from a YouTube video where they discussed that space engineers is going to seemingly stop being developed. This unfortunate news was consolidated by having gotten introduced to this game. However this game is similar in some ways to space engineers I expect to have even more fun with its building.
I am a very big fan of games with sandbox mechanics and to me this game seems to me like a god send. With all the different ways you can customize your build and terraform it seems to have near endless potential. That's not the only the appeal to me for this game for instance there could possibly be hundreds of people being able to play together it seems like a dream come true for someone like me that enjoys open world MMOS and large scale games. I have played in the past ark survival evolved and eve as well as other games where there can be dozens if not hundreds or more of players around a single area. I hope to experience that in this game too even if it wont be quite the same as the other games. This game also seems to have one of the features I have been searching for in many games and have been disappointed a proper terraforming and sandbox experience the freedom to manage land easily and sculpt the terrain is a tantalizing prospect.
I am quite exited to see what I can be able to do in the near future and I hope to see you in the game. o7

@NQ-NyzaltarI am a gold founder, but would like to upgrade to get some of the items from the new backer pack that we weren't aware would be in the game during the kickstarter.  I clicked on the "Buy this pack" button for the patron pack, and it won't let me check out.  There is a message "No need to upgrade, we have your back! We plan to give you all the new items for free under certain conditions, please refer to the dedicated F.A.Q for more info. ".  Of course "all the new items" isn't completely accurate, as there are new items available we won't get. I would be willing to spend more money to increase my pledge in order to get some of the higher level outfits extra STUs, etc.  Will there be any way for us to do so in the future?

I have a little YouTube channel and Twitch and I can't wait to see the NDA fall to be totally free from stream on!

Captain Jack got a reaction from Hextaku in Ruins from the past (re-claimed TU)
We are currently discussing the reclamation of territory units when players become inactive. My thought was instead of just clearing the area of constructs, why not replace those constructs with a dilapidated version, or something along those lines, for players to discover. Past civilizations, remnants of the past, partly overgrown by nature, something that indicates that someone was there, but hasn't been in quite some time.

I don't how exactly, but I bet someone with a big brain could find a way to artificially age constructs. That way, content created doesn't get completely wasted when a player leaves. Just a thought.

I have no idea what you guys are on about FTL and Stargates but, I feel like I need to revisit the answer I gave in regards to the topic from the OP...

What part of PvP matters in this game?
To be honest, it really depends on what you define as pvp; combat? social? physiological? industrial? market?

In the case of combat pvp and being safe, well that horse has been beaten to death and back to life to be once again beaten do death once again, over and over, but seeing the latest news regarding ASA and MSA zones, the answer to this question is relatively simple...

Yes, you can be farming -hypothetically, since there's no farming in du- and see big ships flying above you making you feel small, and not being threatened. Is it possible. Yes. But honestly, it doesn't have to be just ASA or MSA zones. The universe is vast enough that there will be places that can or wont represent tactical or resourceful advantages to any organization. You could -in theory- set you "farming life" there and be safe without the worry of being threaten. Rises the question, for how long though? I don't know, months, years, decades? In which case it would be time to move to another place and set up again. Nomad life. (looks at NQ-Nomad :P)

But Comrade, what's the point on all this wall-of-text?

Simple: There is none, there is no point,. "There is no secret ingredient ~ Mr. Ping. Kung Fu Panda" as I don't know how the universe will be once is has been fully developed.

You carve your own story, your own path, those choices will lead you to any kind of pvp, combat? market? social? Like in real life you aren't always safe, you cant always be safe in DU - regardless if you're in a safe zone or not.

TL:DR; What type of pvp maters in DU? Depends on how YOU define it and what path you carve on your story to define that pvp. Will you be safe? Maybe, maybe not. Does it matter? You define that!

    Cheers,
    Comrademoco
