So....whining about whining is fine, but don't whine about the game because that's boring...?

why would i post something in game...? so it'll get seen by even less people...?

this idea that NQ somehow hasn't been given a fair chance is not founded in reality -- they squandered the last six years of dev and refused to empower a real game designer, instead listening to the dude that has never even worked in game dev, never mind leading the design for a complex MMO.

don't like the complaining? think it's boring? "hey, if you're not having fun, complaining about stuff is not very useful, so...."

personally, I find the newspapers boring...i mean you did a whole issue about comparing dick sizes...but i just shrug and don't read those threads. Not really a problem, is it?

Automated? In what way is the forum automated?

Also...if she is leaving the company, she is likely finishing out the week, so could still have forum access.
0.23 was bizarre move motivated more by JC's arrogance and pride than a real game design or business rationale -- don't get me wrong, industry was getting a little crazy, but people were having fun.

Instantly flipping the off switch on all those factories is a textbook "bad idea" in game development.

Beyond the specifics of 0.23, I think it was symptomatic of NQ's lack of experience and their arrogant leadership that couldn't be bothered to understand the game from a player's perspective. The only perspective that ever mattered was JC and his weird "ready player one" roleplaying.

So I don't think NQ has "given up" on the community -- I think they never really cared to begin with. DU was always an expression of vanity and pride for its founder -- who was always going to do his own thing no matter how many voices in the community (or in his own damn company!) told him otherwise.

That won't ever change, 0.23 just made it more obvious.

If you think DU's issues are obvious to us, they're even more obvious to the devs doing the work and vast majority of NQ's staff...hence the high turnover, low morale, and glacial pace of dev.

I one 1/2/3 months form now I think we will have mostly forgotten about all of this.  So don't let it get to you and just look beyond this idea.

The only important thing from DU is the connections you have made while you were here.  Fortify them and move beyond the game itself.  Because while the connections are real to the people you met, the game doesnt exist, never has and very likely never will.  It was always just a collection of ones and zeros imprinted in magnetism, and before you know it....it won't even be that.

It is almost time to let go,  you will be ok.  There's always another beta.

i don't blame anyone for giving up at this stage -- i think a lot of people working at NQ are waiting for the layoffs rather than quitting.

it's pretty obvious even from the outside that the tech is a complete mess and even the game's design is barely half-baked.

I mean....they had one high-profile hire, Hrafnkell Oskarsson (Eve's original designer). He left or was let go after about 8 months. In his last 20 years of professional life, he's always spent at least 2 years at any company...NQ is the only exception.

not exactly a great sign when your best talent no longer believes in the project or can't get along with its leadership.

Shame they not even allowed her (?) to make farewell post or something!

Its super sad, that Naunet actualy tried for short while be our real, so much needed CM, but then was put in chains and muted of, I guess, to conform to "internal way of doing things" (doing nothing!). Its mind bogling, that hired CMs actualy not allowed to do their CMing thing for some twisted reason.

Yet, she leaving such company likely for best in professsional way. Less time wasted.

They've clearly abandoned their users. My guess is they're looking for a buyer for the tech and they'll be closing the game down soon. They just aren't acting like they intend to build a game anymore.

Ironicly... some of Minecraft fan-made plugins for managing territory gameplay done endlessly better job in actual runnin of city/clan/nation (or other complex public entities) then clumsy abomination of NQ RDMS for "civilization building MMO".

They were so easy and intuitive, that I seen even 9-10 yo kids were able to effectivly handle them on basic level after some figuring out.

Just check it this out for comparison:

Worked in marketing a bit and I have impression its contrary thing -- they likely not to involved with serious decision-making, judging from what I seen.

Like we catched Sesch here and asked about recruit a friend program and he was somewhat lost about it, saying website not in good condition, but this is not priority (?). Lots and lots of other questionable things about marketing (and generaly -- lack of any activity in this regard), that make me kinda doubt that they are evil force responsable for situation. More like 5th wheel.

doesn't really matter what the mechanics are or what ppl think of as balanced or good mechanics when 10 ppl shooting at someone causes heavy lag spikes. maybe they should adress server issues first and then go from there (wow, I say this for how many years now? 6?)

I was avid minecrafter before, but after years started to feel kinda "limited" by primitive blocky existence. Also, always wanted to try EVE-like MMO (politics/mega-wars and all this), but time and time hesitated because of "too late late to start" thoughs.

Found DU fooling around on KS. I lurked hard from 2016, but backed only in 2020, because of serious doubts over viability of project.

Likely it was bad bet, but community is great, made some new friends do to stuff beyond DU (in worst case).

We did a test once and found the following:

Ship A: 1 person in M-core cube of silicon
    Ship B: 4 gunners, 6 lasers each.

So the fun part is when all the gunners of ship B fire on ship A, person sitting on it downloads at about 100mbit/s. Like it downloads the damage to the voxels...
We then capped the download speed of person on ship A to 5mbit (using router cap). The guy was still downloading his damage about 5 minutes after we stopped firing seeing his cube becomes more and more damaged with time.... We now have that meme in our org: "download your damage".
I can only guess how much bandwidth is required when 11 ships fire on 1.
I hope NQ get enough $ from subs to pay for their network bills. 1 fleet fight is like what, couple of petabytes ?

I even say all this childish trickery NQ sometimes try to pull on us is especialy cringy, because most of players here are ralativly old dudes, who seen a lot of shit in MMOs over last 20 years or more, they can do basic 1+1.

Not just unique ore, but there should be some high tier elements which are much easier to make on one planet than another... like one planet has all the ore you need for that item. That (and unique ore) will encourage hauling other than bulk ore hauling.

We fantasised a lot during Alpha (and even before it) about things like this. Only problem, with NQ developing priorities it all sounds almost impossible (or so far in future, that currently irrelevant).

Thing is, all this stuff is "meat on bones", nice thing to have, when base is working.

NQ development still stuck on level of macro "bones" systems, and even there they suffering from some sort of chronic calcium defeciency.

I do not agree. If a warp point/station in PVP space is a benefit to several factions and groups it is not unlikely that these factions will combine forces to support and defend such a location. That in turn can create a fairly safe place "in the middle of nowhere" which could then evolve into a commercial or diplomatic hub. And so it actually is quite possible this grows into a place where many "problems" of many different natures are resolved.

Would that be guaranteed to happen? No, but unless it's tried and an effort is made to make it happen/work it will not happen at all. And working to make such things happen, IMO, is actually what DU should eventually be about.
