How to properly scale, translate, and rotate screen content were very common questions from new players and coupling that with the obscure offsets often led to a lot of confusion. You made the whole process so much easier and I really appreciate it. Thank you NQ-Ligo and team for all your hard work on Athena and beyond.

In all fairness there are a lot more safeguards now. For example we have officially rules on exploiting, a dedicated support category for reporting them, better logging capabilities, and most importantly a PTS server to catch problems early. So while it is still possible for another exploit to one day sneak into the live server, NQ is more prepared to deal with it. Furthermore now that the rules actually exist, players will generally be less inclined to abuse clearly broken mechanics.

Hello Bento and welcome to the forums.

The best thing to do when you encounter a problem is to contact NQ support via https://support.dualthegame.com. In this particular case, you likely have a corrupted installer and a reinstall alone is not completely cleaning it up. Try deleting the following folders before attempting a reinstall. That will most likely fix your issue.
    C:\ProgramData\Dual Universe C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Local\NQ C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Local\Novaquark

In my opinion the two server strategy is more of a temporary fix. Even if NQ can justify the added costs of running a legacy server, most new players would be drawn to the main/popular one. With the population disparity, at some point those added costs and the maintenance overhead would prompt the need for a server merge and we would be in the exact same situation.

Blazemonger has been here a long time and when he asserts something as factual then you can be fairly sure he has a reasonable basis for doing so. While our opinions may differ on many topics, his dedication to truth and precise wording has earned my respect.

You may not agree with what he has to say but that does not make it wrong. Please take the time to consider those statements and the context by which they were written more carefully. I was also present during the time they were made and no such guarantee was ever implied. I would even go so far as to argue that, had NQ made such an absolute promise never to wipe, many early backers would have called it reckless. At best it can be interpreted as "we will not wipe unless necessary". Thus the question we should be debating is whether a wipe is necessary not whether it is permitted.

All that is well and good but you are not looking at the cons side of this. It is not just the Rich trying to stay richer. There is content that is currently built by players in the game that is completely unreproducible even with magic blueprints. The game does not benefit from being empty at launch. I promise you this.

This thread has plenty of personal opinions already and for the most part its what you would expect. The rich want to keep their riches and the poor want a wipe. I would prefer to see a more detailed analysis of how a wipe/no-wipe would impact the future of DU. This is ultimately what NQ is concerned about and by tailoring feedback accordingly, it will have more impact.

    Wipe Considerations:
Lets NQ easily remove schematics and other features that were deemed unpopular. Lets NQ easily correct for wealth gained from bugs and exploits. Lets NQ easily implement the intended planet revamp. Puts both new and old players on equal footing (the added talent wipe option) Gives old players access to the new FTUE and Haven Technically speaking some of these could be accomplished without wiping but would cost a lot of dev power. Which if any, are the most important for DU's future and why?

Also I see that many of you feel that 2 is a non-issue but honestly other than NQ, none of us know that for a fact. For all we know there is a player out there with enough funds/assets to buy several planets and live off new player's calibrations or completely monopolize future content. If you were a game dev, how do you deal with that fairly and how do you prevent this issue from creeping up again in the future? Does DU need some kind of progressive tax system? What other solutions can you think of?

the changes that took place on Jago and Teoma were only asset updates and some very minor surface terrain changes. the revamp that NQ is talking about is a full revamp, with totally new terrain, biomes, continents, etc. you can see some of the stuff they had originally planned (and the tools they have now for generating planets) in this old dev diary

Thank you for the update. Its good to know you are also considering player feedback before making your decision. Like many others, I want DU to achieve long term success. Unfortunately I do not have enough experience/information to constructively comment on how this particular issue will influence that. So instead I will just extend my thanks to all the NQ staff who are actively taking part in this debate. Any employee who is willing to speak up and offer their personal/professional insights is worth their weight in gold and I hope your respective supervisors recognize that.

Msoul got a reaction from Squidrew_ in Taking down DU YouTube content (>10k views) till NQ puts wipe rumours to rest.
The topic reads like you are pulling your youtube videos in protest. If so, I don't exactly agree with that approach but to each his own. Either way all the devs did was casually drop in a reminder that they would be following up on the wipe discussion soon. Literally nothing has changed yet. A wipe was always on the table and we have already seen a few instances where a partial wipe was both needed and performed. I get the frustration of not knowing what the future holds but the game is in beta. When you signed up to play you took that risk of having your progress wiped, many others didn't and are now praying for a wipe. Bets have been placed and winners will be decided soon. All of the recent "if you wipe I will quit" and "if you don't wipe I will never play" statements just come off as self-serving and likely hold very little sway over the actual decision. If you want to contribute some meaningful feedback then head on over to this thread and share your thoughts on how a wipe/no-wipe would be better for DU as a whole.

Also, I sincerely hope you restore your videos at some point. Even if DU were to one day fail I for one would still enjoy watching them and remembering the good times.

You all make some great points here and I wholeheartedly agree that newplayer retention is extremely important. A new FTUE will certainly help with the onboarding process but I think one of the often overlooked aspects is that travel time blundertwink mentioned or really any time the player is not actively engaged. For context, these are some of the comments I regularly hear from newer players:
"I crashed my speeder and had to walk 40km to get a new one." "I wanted to join up with my buddies but they were already on a different planet." "My first day was spent afk waiting for talents to train so I could get into industry." "It took me a week to afford one of the market ships so I could leave Alioth" "I lost my first ship while landing on another planet, respawned on Alioth and have no way to get back to it" The initial barrier to entry is high and often leads to time spent waiting around. There is a balance here, access to content needs to be gated to prevent player burnout but it also can't be spaced out to the point where they have nothing to do but wait. Maybe, consider another tier of elements below basic. Make it absolute garbage but quick and easy to craft/obtain. This would at least let new players participate in their desired profession (construction, piloting, industry, pvp, etc) without having to wait hours/days for skills or quanta.

I think you underestimate the importance of the FTUE, which is not just the introduction and tutorials. It is what either draws the player into the game if it's good or makes them lose interest and leave if it's not.

The FTUE being good is vital to the success of DU

You won’t want to miss a moment of the action when the Athena update hits the Public Test Server (PTS) on Friday, April 1st from 09:00 UTC to April 4th 09:00 UTC.

Athena is the last major update (there might be several significantly smaller ones though) before the official release, with many features to look forward to, including some that will add extra spice for PVPers. The PTS preview means that if you have a Dual Universe subscription, you can get hands-on with the new content and improvements before they are introduced on the Live server. Not only that, but you can also use this opportunity to give us your constructive feedback. The more feedback we have from you, the better we can fine-tune the update!

With Athena being the last major update before the official release, we are aware you might have many questions about the future. In the coming weeks, we will have more information for you on some of the most discussed questions you might be wondering about. This includes long time topics such as will there be a wipe at official release, Avatar vs. Avatar and DAC implementation. We appreciate your patience and we will have the answers for you as soon as we can.

During the PTS weekend, the Design team would appreciate your feedback on these features of Athena:
The new space warfare system centers around alien core units that will spawn in PvP zones and can be located via space radars. These are resource-generating facilities, like space mining points, that can be claimed by players and organizations. Once you’ve claimed them, accumulate resources and fight for its control!
Space mining units and relic plasma collectors may be crafted, purchased, and sold. They will be used to extract the resources from alien core units.
Stasis weapons are used to reduce the maximum velocity of targeted ships, a measure towards bringing better balance to PvP. Big armored ships with powerful space engines will no longer have the advantage that allowed them to easily escape more agile smaller designs. Stasis weapons can be crafted like other PvP items. They use their own specific amunitions, which can also be crafted.
We are also altering the behavior around a construct’s maximum speed. Constructs’ mass will now impact their speed; the heavier the ship, the less its maximum speed will be. Thus, smaller ships will be able to catch up bigger ones despite the latter having bigger engines than the former.

Other key beats of Athena include:
A revamped FTUE to provide a better, more easily comprehensible starting experience for new players. We want to give new players all the information they need to settle into DU with a solid foundation. The FTUE is accessible on Haven, a new moon which is forever in a safe zone, out of PvP battles.
A brand-new system map (F4 > "System" tab), to explore the star system of Helios. With 3D models and precise positions in space of your constructs, planets, alien core units, points of interests, better tools to navigate the map, set warp waypoints properly in addition to destination waypoints, and more!
New skybox and stars rendering improvements that you’ll see as soon as you leave the atmosphere.
Improved water visuals (on every planet containing it), as well as better flashlight visuals.
We are adding Mining Units Lua API, for you to customize how you want to monitor your mining activities, accessible from the Codex (F1).
Athena will also introduce Dual Universe first space market! You’ll be able to shop without making planetfall, directly from your ship. Head to the center point of the safe zone, between Alioth, Madis and Thades. Happy shopping.

For more information on the PTS, including how and where to access it, head here.

We hope you’ll enjoy trying all Athena has to offer. Your feedback has proved invaluable and has helped us in improving Dual Universe. Please share your thoughts here!

I am sure most people here are already aware of all this but to the newer players reading through, note there are differences between simple pvp banter, trolling, and harassment. Pvp banter is just the friendly back and forth conversations you get before and after fights. You are under no obligation to participate in pvp banter and can simply choose to not respond when engaged. If you do wish to chat and are relatively new to said banter, I recommend you start off with a "good fight" or "nice one" and let the other party know you are still learning. In the event the banter becomes unfriendly or someone is bothering you (aka trolling) in chat, blocking them is a very effective solution. In the event that someone's conduct rises to the harassment level, you can contact NQ support and submit a player abuse report. If you have questions about what constitutes harassment, I encourage you to read up on the official code of conduct or message one of the community moderators/managers.

    Hope that helps.

In my opinion limiting the player ability to create general posts is too extreme. There are several reasons why these topics are highly debated but it mostly comes down to player insecurities about the future direction of DU development. These kinds of concerns are always going to exist and there is no getting around that. Ideally there would be a single thread dedicated to each of the "hot" topics where players can discuss it and provide ongoing feedback. The issue here is that some people get too passionate and the discussion quickly deteriorates. To alleviate this, I would instead suggest a one hour delay between postings by the same player. This would allow people more time to cool-off and also incentivize more detailed (and thereby more constructive) responses.

Obviously this is still not an ideal solution but it might be worth a try as a quick band-aid fix until we get further along in development.
