The staff at Outpost Zebra are unsatisfied with its performance. We know we can do better and are determined to improve in that regard. Before we blindly make sweeping (or otherwise) changes, we would like to hear from you, the community. Over the course of a week or more, we will be open to gathering opinions from the members of these Forums...and then some. Then, we will set up a poll, based on the feedback we receive from you. Founded by @Falstaf, the website caters to the greater Dual Universe community in an objective, professional way. For starters, we have seven pertinent points:
What do you think Outpost Zebra could do better? What content should be added to make the site engaging? What content is currently unnecessary? Are you interested in multi-language content? If yes, do you know anyone interested in translation? What do you think Outpost Zebra should focus on more? What is existence? Any other suggestions are welcome.
These questions were open on our server before the Forums. We pass information openly, but first to the people closest to the source: our Discord server. If you have questions, suggestions, or a bit of advice you'd like to share on our server, click here: Discord Server. That said, we hope to engage Noveans more on the Forums. Comment here or in the Discord server and we'll take your input seriously. That includes articles, short stories or opinion takes of your own.

While we hope for feedback, constructive feedback is more important. This is a project by Noveans for Noveans. We don't wish to dally before improving the quality of what we have. For an informed perspective, please visit the Outpost Zebra website first: Outpost Zebra.

We look towards hearing from you.

We are taking all precautions to keep everyone safe at this time. We will do our best to avoid any delay in the development process and are utilizing alternative measures where possible (such as remote work).

Thank you for your concern from all of us at NQ!

They planning to lift NDA and go Beta by summer. Beta, I strongly suspect, will be not Beta in reality, but Soft Launch with no_more_wiping persistance and everyone start their buisness seriously.

So, generaly, not much time left for burning out. ~ 120 days. This is not joke, indeed, but not an year either.

Anyway, Aaron is deadly right about NDA thing -- puplicity/news/screenshots -- all that, is 200% critical in city-building. This is blood of whole process, as for already participation members, as for recruiting too. No sense in starting before NDA lift, expect some technical "prepare" stages (as its done now).

    Weekly Update - March 3rd - 2020
Due to illness and transplanting my desktop into a new case, I haven't exactly been on par with my usual post-updates so lets catch up a little bit!

The only rescues made between January 13th and the start of this most recent test would have been included in a February 8th update. All other tests were either too short due to the deployment of Alpha 3 and did not merit an update due to their lack of content, or NovaQuark had simply scheduled the weekend off.

The first four rescues of Alpha 3 were made during a 48 hour February test. That's 60 rescues overall.
Eleven rescues were made over the recent 11 day test, that's 15 rescues for Alpha 3 and 71 rescues overall.

    ---------

With the introduction of Alpha 3 and all the changes it brought along, to say that there weren't at least a few stuck people would have been an understatement. While some were picked up by friends, I was able to assist two players who had the unfortunate luck of respawning at the default debugging location North Pole on Alioth. With my branded E&E rescue craft out of order due to coding (I'll touch on this later) I jumped into my modified speeder while people were picking themselves up at the districts.

@Hyro was the first to call in which prompted the trip. Upon landing in that location I decided to do some quick landscaping to return things to a pre-Alpha-3 state. In this time a few more people spawned in but most were able to be picked up by friends or were able to utilize testing tools to get them out of their predicaments. With no one else spawning in after a short wait, I dropped them off at their base and rescue 57 was locked.

@Wyndle was stuck up in the space above Alioth and needed a resupply of fuel. I don't know what happened afterwards but they said that less than a quarter tank of fuel would satisfy their ability to get back to the surface. I didn't receive any calls afterwards so I assume they landed safely!

@maxamized would assist @RJ on Alioth with a fuel resupply and score rescue 59.

@Flamm netted rescue 60. @WhiteMEat sure does seem to get in a lot of trouble, with three recorded rescues in our logs, they've currently secured the number one spot for most times rescued.
Looking at the logs, fuel and scrap were delivered. Was this another bad re-entry or did you crash into a tree?

    ----------

The 11 day "super test" as it's been called was a fairly active test for some of Eyes & Ears members. Props to the following members for their activities:
    @Ardes - 5 rescues
@VirtualFPV - 4 rescues - Congrats on your first rescues
@Akropolis112 - 1 rescue - Congrats on your first rescue
    @Flamm - 1 rescue

@Fechi92 also provided us with some feedback on our Stats & Stories page, here's what they had to say:
    ----------

So... about those code issues I had mentioned earlier... Don't count on the game holding your info, save it to a file on your local drive. Unfortunately when I upgraded from an Intel 67k to an AMD 37x plus a new motherboard, all my drives corrupted. All my DU replays that I like to look back fondly on, even from the very first tests, those were salvageable for the most part. Of video data specifically, I think about 200gb was lost alongside... 50gb of other data; desktop items, youtube videos, music, pictures, games.

As it would turn out, the X570 Aorus Pro Wifi motherboard when paired with a Ryzen 3700x CPU, was a bad combination. I think it was a Hardware Unboxed video I saw on youtube that had mentioned this irregularity. My issue specifically was a chipset driver that refused to play nice. No other CPU / board combo had any issues so consistently, just this pair.

Alpha 3 rolls around and I'm messing around with my code and getting ready to tear down my ship so I can rework everything since it was no longer flyable. I cut the code from the game into a file on notepad, cut-paste-cut-paste-cut-paste-cut-paste-cut-paste-cut-paste-cut-paste, and I'm done in about three minutes. I'm cleaning and organizing the file when a hard shutdown suddenly occurs. I hadn't saved the file and its no longer in the game.

Aww shit, here we go again.

There wasn't a recovery file so there went my saving grace.

While looking through my replays, I saw snippets of code so I'll be going back over those videos to see what I can retrieve sometime between now and the next test. I think next time I'll be saving that sort of stuff in a cloud document...

    ---------

No in-game updates from me since I was pretty much out of action for the entire super test while I was installing my new motherboard, then transplanting all of that into a new case.

That's all for now, until next time, fly safe everyone!

It's hard to know at this point what will be necessary and what things will cost. If I'm carrying gunners and marines, it will be because they're necessary and whoever you hire will also need them... and you'll have to pay for them. If they aren't necessary for a mission, they won't be on the crew. If I'm carrying miners, it's because the profit is going to come from selling the product of mining - this will only happen if the price brings in enough to support the miners.

As a solo player, you will be able to afford some of my services and you won't be able to afford others. In some cases, the benefit you get may be that materials from other planets will be available on the market because Hyacinth brough them.

Nice design!!! we have some ideas but indeed building a dynamic space city will be different then any normal city, and i do love the grand entrance and open space.  Our designs in another building game are more cylindrical with one great landing platform right in the middle of the cylinder.

Defence will not only be static. normal static defenses will be present and a fleet of fighterships, bit like in galactica or babylon 5.

Ill come back on the design is i manage to copy it here ><

    Hi Jonesy,

Welcome in the Dual Universe community!

Regarding your statement "I will never pay to play a game in alpha test for $60.00 ever":

It's totally fine, really. If you don't want to support a game in development and prefer to buy and enjoy games only when they are in a more or less complete state, we - at Novaquark - totally understand: those who currently support us do so in order to help us finance the game. In return, they got a fair amount of months of playtime that they will be able to use at official release, and they have access to early stages of development, where they can give their feedback and help to improve/shape the game. We totally get it's not for everyone. If you just want to enjoy a finished game, we respect your choice and it's indeed better to wait until official release.

Regarding the statement "Nerf should not even be a word admitted in the gaming community":

That's your point of view and we respect it, but we tend to disagree on that topic. "Buffing" or "Nerfing" is part of the continuous challenge of having a well balanced game. No dev succeeded (and probably never will) in making a game perfectly balanced from the start, because games nowadays can reach such game depth and/or complexity that it is virtually to anticipate every situation.

Starting from there, buffing and nerfing are necessary adjustments that need to be done during the game life. Not nerfing overpowered features/skills/talents might just make flee more players from the game than addressing the issue, because the game might feel then too easy and the players become bored if there is no challenge anymore, or because it might feel unfair in a PvP game for players not using the said overpowered features (and don't want to use the same Meta that everyone else) feeling disavantaged.

We hope you'll understand Novaquark's stance on those topics, just as we respect yours.

    Best Regards,
    Nyzaltar.

One topic that has had a few fly-bys is: Player-Made and then Player-Run Cities.

    So the questions are:

    1. Will Players make cities?
    2. Apart from the architectural challenge,
    3. Apart from the decorative display,
    4. Apart from the social gathering behaviour,
    5. What else is a reason for players to make cities?
    6. Will cities be protected thus able to grow (from PvP)?
    7. Normally a city develops due to functional reasons:

    * A Trade Centre
    * A combination of Useful Services to people
    * Commute distance of people to their work places
    * Development of layers of social and civic management to organize a city

Namely a city solves a lot of problems (efficiency) but atst creates new ones that need resolving (infrastructure etc).

So looking at points 2-4 there are VISUAL reasons to make cities. However what will be the functional reasons for cities?

Will they be protected zones where Industry-Crafting and the Like can be created next to player housing? That would seem one functional possible reason.
Perhaps cities would be very impressive for recruiting new players if a city has lots of features of interest apart from safety eg a complex tutorial district or advertisement of services/orgs/jobs/markets?

If a city becomes popular would it involve a tax system or rent system? As well as guarantees of safety of property and possessions?

Looking at other MMOs which did cities such as SWG the entertainment factor. For example nightclubs perhaps a bit like a spacestation such as Afterlife from Mass Effect?

These are all questions on this topic to initiate some discussion.

One of the major reasons for cities would be as a major resource sink in the economic perspective of DU. But that assumes a need and hence demand for materials sent to cities. Otherwise conversely, why hawl tons of material into a gravity well when it could be cached in space and more easily distributed without fuel-costs fighting gravity (as well as inertia)?

From an external advertisement point of view a few majestic cities  (curios even) would be appealing and attractive for potential new players.

1 - 6: Most of these were already in the woodwork, so it's good to know we're on the right track ?

In regards to the news bit, we certainly have considered doing a news segment, but ultimately we don't want to fall into the same pitfall the news outlets unfortunately did; that being there's a lot of effort that goes into both creating that sort of content and we've seen more "dry" months as of late. It's definitely something we'll look more into.
I'd like to think that our new style of "In the Mind of" episodes we're unveiling this season will be a bit more aggressive and less of a promo piece for an organization.

Corner them with hard questions, trap them with contradictions and their own stupid quotes, make them suffer and look like fools (ones who deserve it!). This is quality journalism.

    Oooh very nice one indeed.
Well we are designing flying cities since day one of the organization, (maybe i can even paste some designs later) and this discussion is one i really like to see becoming reality.
We will build a ship, and depending on DU we will be able to design it and hand rights over to people and organizations to add to the ship.
To build a city ship Size will be most important and we have a few "option B" ideas if DU goes a different route.
The initial idea was to build a ship matrix with merged/linked cores to the ship all owned by the org but rented/given to orgs and residents to fill. That way the outer core would be our problem and the filling of it would be the org/individuals.  This was not for design issues but for simple safety and security. the ship will be white due to lore, but lore also includes a sistership in black.

So the outer hull, whatever it will be in the end will be indeed mandatory white and with specific structure and materials, however if an organization has a core in the middle of the city ship, they may build a pink uhm thing, maybe the rent will be based on the level of lets call it lack of beauty and coherence.
With this the ship city will look as we want to from the outside. But the inside might be a mess, but then again we see it as a restoration project, bit like the large robotech ships or galactica where everyone is dumped in to escape an exploding planet.

Lets hope we will get small stargates so we can even add that to the ship

Hyacinth Partners Ltd. is the org for the flight and ground crew of the Hyacinth - a medium hauler tramp spacer. We aren't planning to take over the galaxy or build a city in space... but we may provide the logistic support for those activities... for a price.

    Full flight crew complement is
Pilot Navigator/Radar operator Engineer 3 gunners 2 stewards or 2 mission specialists (Yes the ship has bunks for all those people)

    Business focus:
Transport and Logistics Trading Deep Space Salvage ops Special Courier Services.
    Auxiliary activities
    Mining Security Combat
    Currently recruiting

Navigator/Radar Op Still working on what this job will be exactly. I expect to have software to improve navigation, plus a radar system for tracking and flagging hostiles for the pilot's combat display. (System design is WIP). Will be trained to pilot as well.

Flight Engineer. Monitors Engine performance, fuel, and damage during flight. Fixes damage as needed. Advises pilot on best engine performance.

Gunners. (3 positions) Protect the ship from hostiles. We will begin combat training in A3.

Stewards (2 position) Takes care of any passengers. This includes providing whatever they need in during the fight, but also controlling them. (Steward is a polite word for marine. After release, this job may include combat and we will train for it when AvA combat comes in game)

Mission Specialist (several positions) Conducts non-flight mission activities. We will need miners and eventually EVA salvage. A courier might be a mission specialist for special courier services.

Sales Rep (several position) Based on a planet and usually embedded with a nation-type org, reps will handle sales, provide fulfillment and collect payment especially when the Hyacinth is off planet.

Miners (several positions). Gather resources for transport and sale for times when we don't have other contracts. Miners may double as mission specialists

And most importantly.... Customers! While our customers will not generally be members of the org, they are highly valued and welcome at our in-game facilities and on our discord server...

    @le_souriceauGood question. and good points

Hmmmmm neutrality is  a simple concept but a hard one to nourish.
So the concept sinful is a lot easier, and well there are alot of ways to look at this and to also look at non-neutrality.
a Typical neutral should be able to have contact with or act with all kinds of entities, neutral or non neutral, it depends on what your point is, your morality.

So is morality and neutrality the same? Nope it is not. Is being a parent a good lesson in neutrality? yeah in fact it is. as a parent you should hold both the neutral and the moral high ground.
Fanatics are always wrong, i am no fanatic, i am just clear. That is a difference and ill try to explain before going to point 2 ?
So am i neutral, Yes i am. Is the City neutral? Well that is the intention but that doesn't mean we don't have an opinion or we lay back and only smile.

I act like the parent to keep both the neutral and moral high ground, all the groups i am in do not matter in this aspect, if an organization cannot stand alone its food for others, even if you call yourself neutral or a PvP org. One thing i am very curious about is why people think PvP and neutrality are not compatible.

We are neutral and will communicate or deal with anyone who wants too, no restrictions but one.

The restriction has to do with the moral highground we keep. Any organization breaching NQ rules Or behaving toxic to the community will be on the blacklist. Any supporting Grievers org, is on the black list, simply because we promote positive gaming and we wont work with people who deliberately want to make others life a hell.

For your information if you look back you can find we do this since we were part of DU, that already was cause for a Casus belli  for one of the orgs towards us, we are prepared.

So neutrality is not oooh i am so scared and oooh i dont want to pewpew. BRING THEM ON  Our ships are already armed to the teath, we will shoot people who are a threath, we already have a pre-emptive attack squad and we have friends and alies who are not virtual paper tigers but know what an ingame war is. As do I. Alliances are for fun and games not to be used for your defence, any organization withion an allyance should stand on its own feed. Partners are there to help and strike back while you defend and just strike the heard of the enemy. Or as i say, we will not sent our best to defend against your ships, we sent them to eliminate your leader and everyone that is around him/her. We are not a paperless tiger although we dont use words like Conquer or PvP or Purge or imply we are an empire or imperium.

About the sugerdadies, we turned down 6 organizations from the first two pages already and will keep doing that. You dont need a big organization to be safe, you need a good organization and good friends behind the screens to be safe. If else who is safe when Empire calls in all members at once to obliterate you? Boo? Maybe Boo but thats it. Its pretty simple, in DU nobody is safe. You can build a massive ship or building with massive gun placement but if the right person is on the right spot and he works for the other side, your screwed.

We indeed have alliances, visible and secret ones, we have friends visible and invisible ones, we have alts, good relations with numerous people. I must say i did smile about the " can have any decent fighting chance" Most of the members we got in our teams already fly in DU since pre-alpha or in EvE, emperion, SE, Starcontrol, you name it. Or hand to hand combat, we just think this is a more fun way to play This game and well neutrality does not mean sit back and die, actually to be neutral you need an even larger combat force to be able to enforce it. The reason we have al the little alliances with us is not to form a large force but to be helpfull together and get massive community projects done, it is not for security or to fill a list. Some ideas are just brilliant and if the owner of that idea comes for help I always try to help if i can, or sent him/her to someone who can, we can only build DU together.

But in the end, In space nobody hears you scream

I love your questions, lets keep them coming i hope i was able to answer some. As long as it is not interfering privacy or info on other organizations (also privacy) i will try to answer it all

And about the tags, we dont fly with city tags, we fly with C.A.T.S. Tags and none of our members or CATS members is obliged to fly with them, we care for our own but everyone is free to do as they please.
But i know someone who is already waiting for 6 months to get the order to strike Just wait a little longer my friend, War has not started yet and we are not the ones to start them But we will finish them.

When taking this community into account, the PvP aspect, the proposed mining and flying abilities, 6 months to have a city running is fast. to answer your points:
1 the actual building will need logistics and large industry and containers to even start, this will take some time. the amount of voxels needed for a city are Huge! However, if you can get all the people for a city to actually mine and build time could be reduced, but then i talk about hundrets of players, not in the ten'ths
2 DU material handling, mining and logistics this will be weeks to months for mining these loads. It is a city not a small build. A city is only a city when it fills at least a full territory, preferably more.
3 yess, decoration will take even longer and i did not take that into account.
4 indeed, the actual LUA needs and logistics, specially logistics need to be build prior to building the city.

This is also one aspect why it takes long, beside full logistics you need to build full industry capable of building a city that spans over a few Kilometers
