DU is still merely "potential" after this many years of development...IMO, "potential" isn't enough at this stage in the game's final months before release.

I do see how this change improves early gameplay -- it isn't all bad.

But...when viewed holistically alongside the last several changes, the game overall has become less engaging, less scaled, and less fun.

After the early game, players have little to do other than reflect about how much "potential" the game has as they monitor auto miners, shovel paper into machines (up to the limit of their patience), and build mostly for the sake of it, since there's so little functional mechanics after these 6-8 years of development.

You don't judge changes based on potential alone...especially in the final months before release where they don't have time to fully exploit that "potential".

So to me, especially with the game nearing release, potential is another way to say "not good enough" or "not there yet".

After some more time with this change, it is quickly becoming apparent that it is designed to reduce large scale industry as a main goal and in the process reduce "we make everything ourselves" industry within orgs.

As long as you do small scale industry with no more than two stages, it's maintainable. After that it becomes a chore. Even a basic warp cell factory becomes too much to manage.

NQ seems to want to deconstruct the one game mechanic that keep people in the game besides building. It feels like they can't afford the cost massive industry drives server side and so are nerfing player's abilities to run these. I agree this seems designed not to improve gameplay but to cut cost and try to maintain a balanced server budget financially more than anything. And that is pretty much what Deckard said on Discord anyway.

DU has quickly become a series of UI driven mechanics with as little actual server interaction as possible. It's getting more and more removed from the promise of "unlimited possibilities" and a truly open sandbox MMO. NQ is laying tracks everywhere to put players on rails and control what they can (or can't) do directly and intensely.

It really begs the question how NQ pans to finance the required upscale before release to accommodate the large number of incoming players they will need to both reach and provide with an experience that makes them stay.

The average eve player isn't going to want to play DU any time soon of ever for a number of reasons including the culture of the comunity.  What DU needs to do is stop chasing away the people who *do* want to play by trying to get them to play in a different way.  It really is that easy.

I'm in a discord where there are lots of people who used to play DU.  Most don't any more since 0.23.  Many of them were never interested in the quanta-market based game but wanted to mine/build everything themselves and the current changes don't really seem to have them excited.  They should have let people play the way they wanted to play and built features on top to make that easier.

I am also very disappointed that this has gone through without explanation. I feel ignored. Why ask for feedback if you aren't going to address or utilize it. We deserve an explanation on why aluminum and carbon's weight was not swapped. Why do we no longer have a metal to build with as a primary build material?  At least answer your feedback. Silence and no changes is not an answer. You left us on Read. Ghosted.

I understand that realism isn't really a priority here, balance is.

    That is ok.

But the mass change such that we no longer have any metallic honeycombs to work with purely for aesthetics without making our ships heavy as sin... I don't understand.

As DJ Slicer said, at least give us aluminium, an already popular honeycomb for non-pvp use, back down to the ~25 territory. Or better yet, give us a metallic honeycomb in the decorative category, with extremely low weight, but no PvP viability.

It's a pretty hefty hit to our ability to make fancy looking space ships, that look like space ships, and can still fly well.

Unless you really want all of our ships built entirely out of wood, marble, and concrete?

Don't get me wrong, I love that we have the *option* to use some of those fancier honeycombs purely for aesthetics now... But... Space ships should mostly be metal =D

Honestly, I didn't really like the honeycomb changes, it took quite a bit of realism out of the building aspect, and I really liked the realism aspect of this game. I understand things need balancing and well, even though some things like the max speed cap and floor aren't very realistic, I understand they are balance etc, now HC mass should not me messed with. If you guys want to balance it, why not do it by only changing resistances and HP? We don't need any more dumbed-down systems on his game.

I have to agree with @Deathknight here, I'm honestly tired of those "discussion" threads where you ask us about feedback but it goes nowhere, feels like we're just here talking with the walls or a door. I understand you all want to be more "open" and in-touch with the community, but if you're not going to do anything with feedback just don't ask for it, it's gonna save everyone's time.

Well i suppose all of your theoretical future customers will be incredibly excited about having the playing field leveled for them.

    I sure hope they exist.

And i hope you aren't expecting us to promote the game to attract them.

Because i really don't see anything here worth promoting anymore.

    Two questions:

Are you going to test this out a month or three on the PTS first?  I sure hope so.  Bluntly, releases have historically had a lot of bugs - it would be nice for your to clean new ones (ok, and all known old ones) up before launch.  But to make such a change without public testing seems very risky.

I presume DACs remain based on backer level.  They were not mentioned.

Cant say well done, if they release a unfinished game, again. We acepted a unfinished release in the beta, but unfinished game in the release?

The core mechanics are not in the game:

    -Territory Warfare
    -Atmosferic Combat
    -Alot planet rework pending
    -No energy system
    -No economy loop

This is just push the game to another Wipe, once they finish all pending features, or  close the project, wen steam bad coments doom it.

I appreciate the idea to release the game through Steam, but I have an intense feeling it's going to get crucified in the reviews.

Steam will open the game up to a wider audience as it deserves and needs the playerbase, but releasing as a full release with a sub when it's still missing its core pillars and features will not go down well. If it was through an early access system players may be more forgiving but as it stands I feel it will not go well.

    I hope I'm proved wrong.

This was the most disappointing stream I've seen for a major announcement you literally didn't release any new feature rich new additions.

I expected a major announcement to be new systems coming for launch like territory warfare which was due last year or energy systems.

Do you folks realise adding either of those two features later on is not ideal especially energy ?.

I totally understand the planets and I also equally hoped a chance to move them all closer to avoid the snooze fest of flying slowboating.

Anyway it's disheartening indeed after all these years playing.  Your not convincing people to give it a go.

First off, I can appreciate the reasoning behind these changes, in terms of what it brings to PvP. However...

While PvP is a major pillar of the game, it is not the only pillar. Some people just want to build things that look nice, and their motivations are based purely on the textures of the honeycomb, not the HP value.

I have suggested several times in the past and I still believe that a good addition to the game would be armor specific material. This is more realistic and more practical to meet the needs of all players. Armor is not made to look attractive, it is made to be functional.

The various polished, galvanized, etc forms of HC have these looks so we have a variety of colors and textures to build with. Many non-PvP ships are going to be heavier as a result of this change. We can learn to live with that, like we have with so many other changes. I question why we should need to live with that when there is an alternative that treats two entirely different things in different ways?

Please pay attention to real physics.
    Concrete is not light.
Plaster should be a thing to replace the cosmetic need for light concrete but, plaster isn't concrete.
    Iron is heavy
Steel is lighter then Iron but actually stronger, so having HP tied directly to mass is a bad idea.  Rare ore based materials, expensive matierials etc should be able to be ligher and stronger. If I build a ship out of carbon nanotubes and titanium it should be a better ship then out of iron and wood and concrete

So it looks like Lithium, which is currently the lightest material  (5.3kg/m3) and ship builders use it for speed centered crafts is increasing the weight by almost 5x (25kg/m3) which puts it on even grounds with Carbon. Historically Lithium has been almost 1/5 the weight of Carbon, so it does not make sense to now make them equal. Even the new lightest materials will be increasing by almost twice this current value (10kg/m3). Plastic is also increasing by 42%, which is very commonly used in PvE ships for voxel.  This of course combined with the recent adjustor and max speed calculations means that ships that have no foot in PvP at all are going to be negatively effected by this change. This will be most noticeable on XS and S ships.

My suggestion would be to keep Lithium where it is as the lightest material, and also move plastic to "building material" category and make their resistances and HP to match. This will preserve its use in PvE ship design without causing it to be overpowered comparatively in PvP use. Otherwise ships looking to save weight will be reduced to being made out of wood, which I'm sure we can all agree isn't how a spacecraft should look.

That is because NQ just makes up these numbers without applying any logic or reason @Kurosawa ..
They are changing things for the sake of changing things and making up reasons afterwards.

This is why much of what NQ does is kind of a good idea in principle but the execution lacks. If you apply a reason after you "design" the change, that is what happens.

    Next change:
    delete the cross section
re-add the old system of lock per core size (XS lockable at 40km, S at 80, M 150 or more, I don't remember the old values)
hp of weapons/elements or weapon dmg

And we will got a cool PVP system

With linear honeycomb HP based on mass what's the reason to use lighter materials?
They have same HP for mass added on ship, but adds much more cross-section, which results in less total ship's survivability.
I think with hit-prob based on cross-section only viable option of voxels on ships with linear HP are heaviest possible materials with as much res as possible

Haven't run any calculations yet, but it could be possible that Niobium (pure) is better than Mangalloy (product) just because of lower cross-section
