I don't see any way of balancing this, and I think it would be more compelling to keep atmo and space battles mostly separate. So if you want to attack planet side, you need planetary ships, just adds more to logistics/gameplay.

Haunty reacted to Ben Fargo in Sandbox vs Themepark MMOs - What do you think?
Every game does not need to appeal to the vast majority of gamers.  There are a huge number of games that do try to attract them.  It makes more sense to appeal to those who are not finding what they want, instead of another game for the majority with nothing to make it stand out.

    Hello,
we are  providing a dev tracker for Dual Universe until Novaquark may provides their own. It tracks the Twitter accounts (@dualuniverse, @jcbaillie and @Novaquark), Forum accounts(of course not pre-alpha posts) and the news page (https://dualthegame.com/en/news/). Maybe we will implement other channels later, e.g. reddit.

You can find it here: https://hyperion-corporation.de/tracker.php

It supports notifications for new posts (you must select the "Notify" checkbox) and automatically loads new posts (no refresh required).
If you find any errors, feel free to contact me. I hope you will like it.

    With kind regards
    z0Kng from Hyperion Corporation

Haunty reacted to Ben Fargo in Question on losing inventory upon death
This is just my opinion, but I think DACs should be considered something players exchange.  They should be attached to a player's account, never appear in a character's inventory and so not be lost if the character dies.  To me, they just do not make sense as something a character would own.

Only sandbox-MMOs with player-made content and gameplay systems and mechanics that can be used and influenced by the players and that enables and requires player-interaction and that enables emergent gameplay give long-time motivation to me to play a MMO.

If You play a Themepark-MMO and go through the offered content and experiences its all over at the end and becomes boring fast. Especially, if no player-interactions are necessary. Then You can better play a single-player game.

So I just follow and play non-fantasy MMOs with sandbox elements, if possible on a single world or at least massive persistent universe and with a monthly subscription or B2P-model.

Haunty got a reaction from Alsan Teamaro in Incentive and ability to build cities in non-protected areas
I like the idea of inner territories being protected by outer territories, but only for non-secure areas.

Instead of just territory mechanics, I think economies of scale, travel time, travel cost, and scarcity would be a better way to incentivize building outside of sec. I certainly wouldn't want to fly across the star system, or multiple star systems, every time I need to unload my container of ore. If refining the ore reduces the mass/volume of the product, that will be an incentive in building refineries remotely, and in turn markets and factories etc.

I assume your concern is balance of the territory system? I think that should be discussed in more general terms at this stage rather than suggesting specific mechanics, otherwise it is just too speculative.

DU is a social game. Why do ppl always want to give solo players the same protection/tools as orgs?
You CAN play DU on your own and that should be possible, I agree there. But placing a TU is a group effort (or a very long solo effort). A new player can ofc venture outside the safezones to do stuff but building a base (even a small one) is a big undertaking (and should be!). You have to make decisions here and it all boils down to risk vs reward.
Go alone and just dig in - cheap but dangerous
go alone and place a TCU - expensive but a bit safer
go alone, place a TCU and shield - very expensive but very safe
find a group to play with and do stuff with them - cheap and safe

Your suggestion would only lead to trolls (like me) annoying ppl by placing those anti-TCU elements everywhere but I won't reiterate the points already made by others here.

The game content and mechanics are everything I expected based on the information NQ released in the past. The development progress is slow, but I expected that after following other MMOs. The dev relationship with players is better than average in my experience, and communication has gotten better and more frequent lately. At this stage most of the community are backers and passionate about the game, generally good. After release I'd expect it to evolve into something similar to eve-online's community, for better or worse.

I played Elite Dangerous for a while. It was fun but I didn't get the feeling that I was playing an MMO, it was mostly NPCs and content generated by the devs. That's why I'm interested in DU, everything is created by the players.

I'm interested in DU because it doesn't have an NPC grind like virtually ALL OTHER MMORPGs

No wheeled vehicles. Hovercraft will be the ground vehicles. Wheeled vehicles could be possible in a later expansion after release.

Haunty reacted to Anaximander in Concerning Night-Time and Darkness
That only really works on single-player games and on ones where the "darkness" is just the giant sky-lamp going to 0.05 of its original ouput  .Essentially, it's not dark, it's just the lamp being tuned down, hence why increasing brightness exponentially increasing the current light intensity.

DU has an actual lightsource in the sky, If you notice in their videos, when the sun moves in the sky, the shadows don't "jump" to refresh, they just move gradually along with the star. If it's night, it's night, there is no light source. You can amp the brightness up all you want, 0% luminosity is 0%

And to be fair, they did say they may try to make night-time "more visible", but I hope they reconsider. Everyone is tired of the "blue hue nights" of MMOs.

IMO food would just add tedium to the gameplay if it was required to survive, I'd rather it only give some kind of bonus.

Well JC already says "See you soon in Dual Universe" so when finally in DU, could just be shortened to "See you soon." Which can either be a nice parting expression, or a super creepy threat.

Who are the Dual Universe Wayfarers?
A group of explorers that share a passion for discovering what secrets Dual Universe has to offer.  This stretches from discovering new planets in the farthest reaches of the galaxy to diving through the deepest seas. If there is something to discover, we will find it.

    For the Individual:
Currently there is a space program with one of our sponsor organisations that will provide ships during alpha and beta for the avid explorer. Don't like building ships but want to go to another planet? Come be part of an exploratory crew.
Don't want to leave Alioth?  Do you prefer discovering the secrets of the planet chosen as the destination for the Novark? We have a place for you too.

Membership in this organisation won't have any impact on your other organizations. You can be member of multiple groups and leave this one anytime, as you wish.

But I don't want to join!
In the future, DU wayfarers will support those that don't want to join any organizations by giving those lone wolves access to job boards. You DU you.

    For Organisations:
DU Wayfarers is a neutral organisation, accepting sponsorship's by other organisations.  A great test-bed for more experimental craft.  Information gathered in exploration missions will be shared with the sponsor. Also organisations will be able add their jobs to DU Wayfarers job boards.

Sending a representative early is best.
