Unless required otherwise by law, I don't think NQ should be in the business of playing content police.

If players don't want something ugly, they should be the ones to go out there and change it.

Once NQ starts removing every little thing that people are reporting as offensive, there really is no end to the rabbit hole that would open up.

    I see.

Sharing opinions about someone through reputation points is a good idea, no doubt about that. I think you should consider proposing time-out mechanics. You see, I plan to play this game for years and years. Reputation points, unlike word of mouth will lose reliability the longer the character stays active. Say I was a bounty hunter in my younger years: rash, devious and fearless. I earned a lot, lost a lot, and undoubtedly got a lot of negative reputation, parting gifts from my victims. Was I 'bad' because I was a bounty hunter? By universal standards, no. But the people I killed had a negative opinion of me because I killed them. So, while my wallet grew, my reputation status dipped.

Two years later, older and wiser, I am industrialist, supplying both peaceful players and warmongers with elements. I trade on the market, so people rarely see me, or bother to thank the person who produced engines they bought. My reputation remains abysmal, but I have 'changed'.

You see, were someone to ask another player about me when I was a bounty hunter, they would no doubt be told to stay away, or keep their bounty low. Now that I am an industrialist, people will say the opposite, because my interests have changed. If they ask, they will know. If they don't ask they won't know. The new player that's struggling against tax collectors won't understand that I'm here to help via my combat experience. What he will see is a relic of my past behaviour: reputation points that are now inaccurate.

Stereotyping saves time, but getting to know someone always makes you the wiser and the experience richer. That's social content, understanding and judging people by direct interaction or by interaction through others that know people.

With the Forum, it is different. The forum is not a game: it's an extension of a game, but it is real life. I may have seven followers, but what is that out of several thousand players? Most people don't consider the follower count when talking on the forums, they consider the spoken words and attitude. I have followed people and I have forgotten most of the people I followed or when I followed them, but like the reputation system being proposed, I didn't bother to unfollow them.

There is a difference between an MMO and a Facebook wannabe. The Forums allow us to judge people based on what they say, not how they play. The reputation system judges people based on how others perceive them at that particular time, not who they are or they will be. Unless you give the reputation system a finite and short duration, its importance will fade with time. That aside, it is still subject to the manipulation through points discussed by other players above.

The purpose behind your idea is a good one. I simply find fault with the way you propose to execute the idea.

    Cheers.

That's the problem with assigning reputation with DarkHorizon's method. Don't get me wrong. His idea is a good one in theory, but if we're judging people based by reputation assigned by other people, there are good ways to 'grief' players like that.

Frankly, I can't but agree with you here. What's the point of the reputation system? Punishing bad behaviour? Birds of a feather flock together. All the player needs is to find a SomethingAwful group in DU and they will be nasty, rep points or no. Last year we went through something similar like this on the forums: the bounty system. A year after, it seems like people have forgotten...or they never knew. Ultimately, bounty doesn't stop people from killing you. Some people enjoy having large bounties on their head, because it's a kind of trophy. You see someone with a 200 Quanta bounty on his head: you're probably going to relax a little or panic a lot less. You see someone with a 3,000,000 Quanta bounty on his head coming for you and you know without knowing that you're in trouble.

The same thing will apply for the reputation systems being discussed on this thread. -10rep? Possibly, a new player who decided to get his hands dirty, or some casual player that did one too many 'wrong' things. -767 rep? Panic mode on. For the lone low rep player, the threat posed might be less. But, when low rep becomes haute couture for players, you will find bands of 50, 100 players with reps below -70. And some of the 'good' guys will definitely join the band because the cool kids are doing it. Unlike Eve, there is no CONCORD in DU, to enforce the penalties of low security status. Through interaction with certain players, organisations can tell apart the good bad guys from the bad good guys and the bad bad guys. I doubt there'll be many good good guys for obvious reasons. Someone who is -999rep can still make an awesome mentor and there will be people like that in DU. A +189 rep player can be a total jerk - he may play by the rules and be a scammer, have a flock to bring is rep up, or know how to 'farm' rep points.

What is the point of the reputation system? To ascertain the character of players? Again, the reputation system - like the bounty system - stands little chance of great improvement. If I'm bent on bypassing the bounty bar (no pun intended) I can let myself get shot and have the bounty eliminated. Then, I'll go hunt again. When the bounty gets too high, I allow myself to be caught and reset it to zero. Is my rep getting too low? Well, I hang around new players showing them how to get around the game. Then, I come for you. Angel at day, devil at night. Or, I join an org that helps me farm my points. Problem solved. You may imagine the yammering we will hear about this system anyway:

'I did good to you!', says he. 'Why won't you give me good rep? I made up for my wrong!'

'Get away.' says you, feeling smug. 'Cry all you like.'

Then, you get a negative rep yourself, and because this is emergent gameplay, you'll get negative rep by 50+ people you never knew. Because this is emergent gameplay, he can pay others to negative rep you, at a rate as low at 50 Quanta per rep. If quest boards get implemented, I pity you. You've never seen what -1000 rep looks like until someone with cash pays 500Q for each - rep. But, now, you're one of the 'bad' guys or bad good guys for a sin as little as refusing to withdraw your negative rep from a disgruntled player.

So, what is the point of the reputation system?

    Cheers.

On the other hand, items not existing anymore is what will drive economies in DU. If something is destroyed or lost through being deleted, damaged, or PvP, there is then demand for new stuff, this demand is what people who trade rely on. If there was only demand due to people wanting more of something, then the economical part of Du would be a lot less interesting.

ShioriStein got a reaction from Underhand Aerial in Element (Tech ) Unlock and Material type
Well i have search the the forum but didnt find my thought (idea or just curious ), if it have appear somewhere so please tell me thank you.

When i found out that we have skill tree and unlock will take real time ( not in game time) like EvE so everyone is fair in playing the game. But about the way how the research and unlock thing i didnt see yet so well i want to say my little idea.

*Unlock element which made from some material:

To unlock something or i can say say to unlock skill to unlock the element so you can create it, i suggest we should have a skill tree called "Material Knowledge" to do it. In this skill tree just like other skill tree, it need real time to train but the different is, it require you have a sample (or some amount ) of the material to train. When the train is finish it will tell you what name of the material and what type* is it. Then after the material is unlock, it will unlock the skill (or research ability ? ) to unlock the element which need this material to create it. IT mean if an element require 2 different material to create, you have to research both of it before you can unlock the element and so on.

This only an optional and i didnt know if it can unbalance the game: And so on the other hand with this skill tree, you can make a data chip ( this should limit) and can sell it, this data chip will contain the data about the material but it dont give you the skill immediately but only reduce the time you need to train skill research about the material.

And with different material it will take different time to research.

    *Type:
And about the material type, i suggest the dev dont show the information about the material or the ore. Just using a common name like yellow ore, red ore or just ? ore. And dont set it is rare or common or uncommon, let player do it.
The information about the material should appear once the player have do the research ( train skill). This idea is to prevent the player to go on a "Gather material hunt", just go and do some boring mining. This make the ability that you everytime go mining and encounter a strange material and you thought it is useless but turn out it be some very rare ore and you regret that why you dont mine it more.

Also it give the game about the feeling: KNOWLEDGE IS POWER.
I can say there will be some guide about mining and ore type but i doubt anyone will want to share an extremely rare material information(what can it do, what you can make with it)  than what it color.

Please do, I'm sure you'd get plenty of readers and more point of discussion on the topic for future reference is always a good thing!
People were paid, but that's not the point, you don't just drop 10k on someone's head and expect them to work with you for a few months. Sure they have investors, but they're building a game with, as my mom likes to put it, "newfangled technology I can't understand".

Game development is one thing, but actually maintaining the game and plucking the bugs as the popup is completely different.

As far as the server costs, please cite your source on that. Keep in mind that those servers must be able to accept a lot of bandwidth, crunch numbers really really good, be able to store a lot of data, be supplied with power, have proper heating, cooling, and airflow, insurance in case everything goes kaputz, physical storage for those very servers because we all know that isn't free...

Workspace for the employees, their equipment, heating, cooling and airflow for a productive work environment,  sprinkler systems and water in case their building catches on fire, building rent (again because it's so egregious...), decent parking space for employees to park their personal transportation, sewage, and garbage disposal costs, amenities so the employees are actually happy and a bunch bunch of other stuff...

Oh, on top of all this, everything has to be kept secure. The building they work in to keep the bad guys out in addition to DDoS and other internet related protection.

My point is, there's a lot more to the expenses than just renting out a server for, by your estimate, 14.95. That's just the start too, someone else could easily cover the expenditures I forgot.

As much as I would love for this game to be a free-to-play game, the cost of a weekend Starbucks keeps a lot of... bad stuff out of the community. This particularly has been hashed and rehashed so I won't go over it.

A MMO game and no update forever ... what a nightmare.

How can you live with a online game which keep like that for the whole life of the game.

New content, new fix bug, new optimize, new function,... very much a lot of thing they want to add in game, but now they dont have time, only priority now is which they have promised in kickstart. Then after launch they will get new expansion for the game.

A gigantic single shard universe requires a giantic server cluster that costs to run. The monthly fee is for that as well as the future content they create. There's already plans for expansions and those are free for the players. Meaning you pay the monthly sub and the game will keep running and giving you new content every now and then

I didnt say it that you should fly fighter if you cant find anyone willing to man the turret. I just say that if feel dull by being man a turret so you should be a pilot of a fighter, so you will got all the freedom you want.

The reason why i disagree with got "some what automate on dynamic construct" is because it can be used to abuse. Once it happen like, auto turret with low accuracy and high consume than normal (just assume ), the way to solve it is build more turret and gather lot of resource to use the ship at a final blow with the enemy, like when in a battle with a lot of ship are fighting each other, you just need to get the ship inside the battle, when in position all you need it active the auto turret and let it shot what ever it see, then the battle will end in short time due to lot of turret are shotting. You will say it is balance when it is high consume and low accuracy than normal, but what if a big org have resource to do it ? Because in the end instead you got some battle ship to protect, all you have to do is protect your titan (massive ship ), it clear that titan will strong as some battle ship but now the target you have to protect will decrease down to only one and i sure it will much more easier.

I will disagree if you think AI = Auto Firing Turret.

If i'm not wrong, there will be some radar type in the game. It will give you early warning when some strange ship come to near you (i dont know you have to see the screen or it will auto have sound warning via LUA , i hope it will be the second  ) . So you will assemble your friend and each will take a seat and man the turret. So in the end none force you to man the turret all the time, you just want your ship must in battle state all the time but dont want to man the gun whole time.

Also i will like to know how you will def your ship when your country time is 3 AM and you are sleep on the bed ( assume you are in sleep ) , i would think your def system cant against all of them, because if it can it break the game.

It can be easy, it can be hard. IT can be common, it can be rare. IT can be fast, it can be long. We still dont know how the economic will work and how will resource gather will be so the right answer for you not exits.

But a rough answer already here. Like UnderhandAerial example, that is how DAC will get in DU.

The price of DAC will not so high but also will not so low, the cost for it will determine by the player if they see it fit.

Also how you get DAC one part is in you. Get more connection, be someone friendly and he will buy your resource all time with his DAC. Or with speech skill to barter and get right price. Or scam (i highly not recommended this) to get DAC. All is up to you too.

Like @Kytheum say, this feature is very good in DU but it not so that much to be must add to the game. Maybe after they find way to optimize the server and stability it they can it so. But like someone say, a voice system in DU will make thing easier and the sound of communication will be fun, noise and loud but it make the game live not lifeless. I like it when I was played Rust, where I use mic to communicate and say ' dont shoot ' when a stranger show up.
