The thruster component could add some sort of no build zone extending from the intake and exhaust, which would be different with each thruster.

I know something like this is far from priorities but wouldn't it be great to have some kind of dummy gun? You can fire it, it make sounds and simulates the impact without hurting anyone. You could use it in training facilities built by your faction, mock battles and military drills in general. Maybe even for play like paintball if players are creative enough.

What do you guys think about a training gun in general? I'd like to hear everyone's reasoning for why it's good/bad/whatever.

I agree with Kuritho; adding food and water to the game as a survival mechanic tends to detract from the gameplay for me. I found it really annoying how little I could accomplish when I played ARK because I was almost constantly gathering food just to survive!

Granted, ARK is a SURVIVAL game more or less, so it was expected. Dual Universe isn't meant to be based on survival gameplay from a player vs. nature perspective, at least not the way I have read about it.

So, for stuff like healing / buffs, (maybe alternative fuel?) it would be neat, but I actually hope they DON'T implement the "survival" aspect.

Not a bad idea, except that your space suit would have ranged communication if it were real life, so I doubt they won't include that. (Assuming they implement in-game chat at all, of course.)

However, I like the thought behind what you suggested. The range of your character should be limited without a network or other equipment to boost the signal.

hello community, I'm curious as it seems unaddressed so far, due to the amount of factions and non- space interactions will there be wearables other than the default flight suit? like it'd be a bit stale after a while in a city when all you see is a bunch of multi color space suits walking around, I'm thinking there's two schools of thought : One, all planets are unable to support our life due to atmosphere requirements
Two, some planets have breathable atmosphere and some don't meaning we could theoretically wear clothes other than the space suit

if number one is the case then it may be a useful thought to have more customizable suits, decals, different helmets, different attachments,
etc.I think this is important because the game ,while space focused isn't only for space and in fact in order for the idea to work must have many people willing to mostly remain on-planet, and to help cater to those people it may be wise to add customization to their person to show their character for role-play or loyalty to a faction which brings me to the more interesting thought:

if number two is the case then having a character customization that includes what your actual person will look like (i do of course realize that this would put some more strain on the server but still) as well as clothes and maybe even tattoos(a bit of a stretch). so that a city looks like a city full of unique individuals or even some people wearing uniforms indicating their function. i think it adds to the immersion.

imagine you're boarded by a pirate ship and some guys who look exactly like everyone you've ever seen enter, okay, great youre "scared".
now if you will imagine, you're boarded and six varying sized marauders wearing suits with makeshift attachments and menacing matching helmets all bearing a matching blood red decal on their chest, you immediately recognize this crew as the infamous "red tooth" gang from the Centurian system.

tell me your thoughts on this please, if i left out any pros feel free to state them, there are of course cons and id love to hear that too
if this is already addressed then i apologize, though i don't believe that it is

Me too. I can't see it not being possible though.

I mean, every ship needs a fuel holding tank, (or battery, if you can make electric ships,) a way to get the fuel into the ship, and a way to get the fuel from the tank to the engines.

All the refuel ship needs is access to a vacuum-sealed fuel port. (But it sounds like you probably already know this stuff. )

Obviously there are challenges in making it happen, but would love to see this in the game!

How is he describing that at all? You want to get maximum profit out of your products, and you're trying to sneak it passed the TU's border patrols guarding their home system. If successful, you get to the black market on the homeworld's moon and sell for maximum profit. Considering that people going to a black market in such a heavily patrolled area are probably desperate for the item you can mark it up a bit too. This isn't about PvP, or P2P (who are you giving money to in this situation?), it's about being clever and evading superior enemies.

Organisation X has decreed that only merchants registered with its new Trade Agency will be allowed to transport weapons throughout their territory and sell it in their markets. The taxes are lenient, but the heavy price for registering increases all costs on weapons in the territory. A clever smuggler can pass weapons around while pretending to cargo rice between planets, make a profit, and have buyers who won't have to pay as much.

It's not going to be "drugs are bad, m'kay, we've banned them". It's going to be organisations' bureaucracies trying to squeeze more money out of their economy, and people who want to combine the danger of espionage with the profits of trading to make some money.

I am on the fence about the player-content playback issue. I think it could be abused, but it could also be regulated somewhat.
It could be awesome, or annoying.
I do think it would be cool to be walking around the cockpit of my mid-size cargo transport while listening to whatever tunes / news / podcast I want to coming through the cockpit speakers.
But at the same time I certainly see the challenges of allowing something like that too!

Maybe they could make it an opt-in deal, where you get a notice like: "Ambient sounds available: Accept / Deny," whenever someone has it set up in the area.
Maybe even some kind of "group accept" where everything from a set group of people is automatically played so you don't have to "accept" every time you enter one of their zones. This could be as small as a list you made for yourself, or as large as an organization-size list, or a city-wide zone, etc.!

    Anyway, just my 2 cents.

I am thinking these are more voxel textures than actual elements themselves. Good suggestions though.
25cm cubes, I believe is the smallest that can be done. This is a bit big for finer decorative elements, like a pot plant, which is why this thread exists. NQ have stated there could be player made decorative elements like the ones you are describing. I like the idea of being able to change the colors of the preset decorative elements.

I think a food and water mechanic would make gameplay weird. I think we should stick to having plants having more... industrial use.
Food and water is either you don't worry about it or you have to eat an entire cow every 3 minutes.

You're asking the impossible.  People will get upset no matter how honorably or dishonorably their builds are destroyed.  In the end they are out of a lot of time and work either way.  It's how you deal with it in the aftermath that matters.  Do you go into a red rage and make vengeance your main priority and go on a killing spree?   Or do you learn from the experience and spend the time sending out spies, building back up, changing tactics, running drills, planning the perfect plan and then go after your revenge?

But here we are again.  Do either of these responses automatically make you a griefer?  Maybe, maybe not.  Could be that the pirates are the ones who "technically" get griefed the most often from folks who can't let go of their anger over a perfectly legitimate pirate attack.

I think this is another one of those things that will need to be taken on a case-by-case basis.  IMO that's one of the main things wrong with most societies.  Everyone wants blanket laws for every little thing and that never works because people are all different and no two encounters happen under the same circumstances.  It's an exercise in futility.

Just to clarify, when I mentioned, "overstepping your bounds," I was referring mainly to acting in a way that gives your peers (other pirates) a bad reputation. (Above and beyond the "bad" rep of being a pirate. )
It is true that if you push society too far, you will probably regret it as well.

I never meant that pirates should try to operate within the confines of the law....because obviously....piracy is outlawed.

I see giving your target a chance to surrender and disabling the ship as perfectly acceptible concepts in the world of piracy, and doing so is exactly the type of conduct I hope to see!

And if someone messes with one of your crew for no reason, I would expect nothing less than retaliation in full to the party responsible.

    Happy Hunting!

The IBO have mentioned that they're doing "insurance," but from reading their statement it sounds like they're focused on cargo insurance more than other kinds. Of course they could expand later.

You cross the line from being a slight nuisance to a constant detriment to parts of society, civilisation will attack. I mean, in the early game the ring at the edge of the Arkzone will be one of the most tense places in the universe. It's prime piracy territory. Keep that raiding up once that area turns into a city and it's the jurisdiction of the police and they'll hunt you down. It's just an example, but you have to understand that people will respond when their bounds are overstepped, not yours.

True, which is why I said it may or may not be a good idea. It would depend on the risk you are willing to take.
However, if you were an organization purchasing multiple territories....not much risk there unless someone actually gets to one of the TUs.

Not exactly sure what you are referring to here, unless it was my comment about tile shapes. In which case; yes, they have said that every planet will have a few pentagonal tiles, since it is impossible to equally divide a planet using normal shapes without them.

I agree, it would be nice to be able to place it wherever you want. I just hope it doesn't need to be centered in the territory, regardless of whether it is above or below the surface.

If you can place it on a border, some creative defense strategies could occur.

For example, other than the odd pentagonal tiles, all territories will be hexagons. This means that at each corner, your tile is "sharing" a corner with two other tiles.
If you work together with your neighbors that share a corner, you could all place your TUs on corners that touch. Why? You would only need to defend roughly 1/3 the area you otherwise would have! This means, if you put the same amount of resources into the defensive structure, it will be 3 times stronger than it would have been.

Not saying that it is a great idea, but it's not a bad one.
Of course, like anything, it has downsides, but you have to take the bad with the good.

Yes, but what about those who are trying to communicate one-on-one outside the logistical resources of a ship and its crew?

For example, I am walking around, and I see someone building a really cool hovercraft. I happen to be looking for one, so I walk over to see if he would be willing to sell it to me. Only then do I realize that his name is written in Arabic, and that he doesn't speak English. It would certainly be useful if I had a means of communicating with him!

Plus, why should we expect players from non-English-speaking countries to find interpreters just so we can talk to each other? What if someone from France wants to talk to someone in Portugal? Or a Russian wants to talk to a Spaniard? People will be playing this from all around the world, and although a "common" communication language would be nice, this isn't real life, and people won't be learning a new language just to play! (Besides, the language would be French, which is ironic given that it was the historical "universal" trade language.)

So, that is why you need more than a bridge officer who speaks English.

I really want to hear about this, safe zone mechanics are one of the things I'm most interested in at these early stages.

From the perspective of promoting emergent gameplay, I think the first option is better. It creates more transport jobs to explicitly move people from safe zones to organisation headquarters (even if you have to jump through multiple safe zones to get there) than being able to jump straight to another org's homeworld. it also promotes turning every individual safe zone into trading ports over time. I can see them being harshly fought over as well, but over time they'll be more valuable for economic activity after a single org takes over, or multiple orgs agree to a truce.

The whole idea about warping between safe zones is a great idea either way though. Prevents Alioth from becoming the centre of the universe so harshly.

What you have described was mentioned, but you did an excellent job of describing it anyway.

I completely agree on the idea of planetary time and space time, in fact I mentioned it further up. For those who will be spending a large amount of time on a particular planet, it just makes sense to have some kind of planetary standard. Likewise for those in space, as there will be no day / night cycles to distinguish one day from the next out there.

But my favorite part of your post was this:
As far as leaving time zones to individual governments, I would say that should be an option for actual LOCAL time zones, not planet-wide time. They would have to work it out with all the other governing groups on their continent, possibly their planet, but it could be done. They could just make it as a third option when you land on the planet; you could calibrate your clock for space time, planet time, or local time. Better yet, have it display all 3!
Some people will say that multiple time settings / zones adds unnecessary complication to things, I say as long as using it is OPTIONAL, it shouldn't be an issue. You can use it...or not, your choice. But that is no reason the rest of us shouldn't get it.

I would definitely hope for an ingame mechanism for renting out chunks of land within your claim territory; even something resembling an ingame real estate market. It should have a way of locking out other players, ideally a slightly simplified RDMS for that area; the ability to build your own stuff within it but also connect with outside constructs. Players inside of the claimed territory would be safe from the outside and also each other (until someone takes down the 48hour shield). I think that the game code itself should enforce certain laws. Crime might be interesting, but inside of a claimed territory vandalism, murder, and theft should be simply impossible.

The ability to rent or sell specific chunks of land within a claimed territory could allow for the building of diverse cities. Players could come together without having to learn to trust each other first. Many people coming together each for the their own reasons. If only people in the same faction, or who trust each other, can build within the same claimed territory then that will nearly prevent the appearance of true cities. When you move to a city in the real world, you don't need to gain the trust of everyone who was there before you right? Most people move because of the opportunities present at their destination. All you would need is the money to buy the land, materials to build your home, and the willingness to obey local laws.
