Sad thing is this has been shouted to NQ for at least 5 years. They don't care about making a fun game anymore.

There's no way that schematic refund is going to survive a wipe!  Some people bought them at 1% and received huge payouts for the refund.  Even some of the ones who didn't buy them at 1% cost got game-breaking amounts back from the refund (they were able to earn the money through the old mission system).  Only reason they're doing it, IMO, is that they know they're going to delete all the money later so don't want to bother arguing about it now.

Also talent points.  After all the times they objected to resetting them and all the good reasons given for not resetting they just reset them out of nowhere for a vague, waffly and obviously BS reason.  I mean, they didn't even bother to make up a proper excuse.  They just outright tested the post-wipe-talent-refund system.

While i understand you frustration, you are not entitled to any monetary compensations what so ever. You joined a kickstarter game which is always a gamble, only do that if you are ready to lose.

As time went on NQ has become more and more untrustworthy so if you have paid for subscriptions that is also entirely on you, no one has forced you to thrown money at NQ.

Personally i bought the KS lie, but have no intention to sub in any form as DU today is not what was promised in the KS, not even close.

the idea behind the weapon nerf is to be capable th handle one or two hit on weapon / big element (engine - shield - warp)

actually if you have to vent your shield (L or M) it takes a long time and in combat you vent you loose ....

with voxel upgrade we now should have bigger than nano ship that can stay alive more than 1 or 2 s without shield
but the remaining problem is that weapon damage will destroy your element in seconds
with the cross section problem all your element are packed and if you take a hit all low life ones die instant only L-weapon XL-engine can take a shot without instant dying

TBH. Cost vs income is the only thing that matters. And everyone has told NQ it will not work. Everyone except "Builders". Which are very vocal and pushed everyone else away from this game.
This is the result of what "Builders" wanted. Everyone told you years ago. But you and NQ did not listen. Deal.with it.

I have not looked at the exact numbers, but increasing honeycomb EHP is something I have been asking for for a while, so I'm excited for this change. That said, please do not forget to increase the health of weapons smaller than L (and some other exterior elements)! They get one shot by the weakest viable weapon, small cannons. As long as this is the case, voxel tanking will not be that popular.

At the moment how this is setup it could really be a semi browser game as the wait for talents and new schematics will be the best progress you can get add checking markets to that and, technically if those things can be done on a browser bar probably far over 50% of current players have no reason to log in.
Since the daily stuff is all minigames nobody asked for and the actual still is limited more and more everyday we kinda have not much left then to check inventories, markets, talents and maybe industry. And with the crappy chat system where there are 10 to 20 boxes to shuffle i do not even think about clicking those, for social chat ingame this system kinda sucks.
If it was released with everything we had pre 0.23 i would have believed it would work, and even that the progress on to do stuff would get there, the momentum was right.  A slight F.Up on 0.23 with the clear message that it would not be turned back what followed by mass exploids and developers who did really fishy stuff Killed momentum. And it has not been back since.

How the hell do you manage to loose players during a global closedown where everyone has nothing else to do at home then play.
Forgot to make a plan? Server tech is really that bad? We all remember lag-city i guess but that was a perfect moment to learn and grow and evolve. Sorry to say but i think you threw out the kid with the bathwater and throwing JC out did not do any good either as he was the embodiment of the whole vision. Although slightly blurred in the end he did bring the fire we all loved

Increasing the skill points for achievements could encourage players to play the game and not to by alt accounts to get passive skill points instead. That would mean more server load and less income. That's not what NQ is interested in.

If it were up to me, I would change the in-game nomenclature to reflect the paradigm shift. Aphelia is charging us licensing fees.  I'm still not sure where that b!#$% gets off thinking she has that right, but that is a short story for another day.

They are going for that 1 wave but I think even that will be small. Pretty much everyone I use to play with is completely over DU and said they won't be playing release. Maybe if the game doesn't die they will check back in 5 years. But as it stands I get the feeling that most who would be the type to be interested in DU have already heard of it.  It always has and will always be niche.

They pushed this idea that they developed "cutting edge" technology that would magically allow them to maintain vast amounts of data and scale to "millions" of players. I wondered how this would work, but I generally believed them.

Then I played the game on beta launch and realized they were in way, way, way over their heads.

Learning more about their tech, it became clear that they hadn't really "innovated" anything to make their claims about scale even a little bit realistic.

As we see now, they didn't even do basic due diligence in testing the crappy tech they did make with any sort of real load or even basic, basic common sense.

Yet they love to complain about their bad choices, too...like telling us that "scaling to infinity" is so obviously not a path forward with industry as if they weren't the ones that designed it like that to begin with years and years and years ago.

If they owned their mistakes, I think everyone would give NQ a lot more sympathy and patience. But they don't do the whole "humble" thing...instead, they want us to adjust our tone and be more positive in feedback. They want us to understand why changes are "required" while in the same breath admitting that it's probably not fun.

The hubris is just outstanding...and I admit, their whole attitude makes me eager to see the next few months play out as we all know they will.

Early talk (~2018) was about a procedurally generated universe - that people would be able to head off in any direction and find new star systems to exploit.  The programmers amongst us wondered how they would handle all that data - being able to do so would have truly been a programming feat.  We saw the death of that once they started hand tweaking the planets "for quality" purposes.

This is something people have been bringing up for like 2 years now, haha.

I thought that this was something NQ had planned initially as well, but obviously never implemented.

It's sad to see how NQ failed to design for scale with every core pillar of the game from mining to PvP to industry.

They insist that it's impossible to let players run 1000s of factory units, but...really, like all things, it depends on the implementation.

They didn't want to fix the implementation (just like with mining), so they decided to fix bad technical choices with worse mechanics.

I could write a long, detailed rant about specific ways they could have designed this for scale (e.g. the simplest is much longer production loops), but NQ wouldn't read it and even if they did, this ship has sailed years ago.

The issue isn't that there's no better ideas than what NQ has implemented, it's that they made their technical choices 6+ years ago -- and failed to design for scale through the history of this whole project, so now the design itself has to be altered to fit into a bad technical foundation.

So much for "cutting edge" tech that can support "millions" of players.

Oh good lord, is this change for real?
Schematics are data, why would they be consumed? Limited use Copyright enforced by the AI overlord? That's just plain silly.
This is what we (in the business of actually developing schematics for a living) would usually call an "over-engineered solution"... and no, that's not a compliment.

You want to limit the amount of stuff a player can make in a set period of time? Add power requirements to the damned machinery!
you want to make 100 screws? that will cost you 1kWh (random figure)
you want to assemble an engine? that will cost you 10kWh (another random figure)
you want to smelt several tons of ore? that will cost you 100kWh (random again, but higher than assembly since it is a energy intensive process in real life)

Get a generator in game that produces a set amount of energy, gate how many you can have/deploy with skills.
There you go, job done. A simple idea inspired by real life that opens up no end of possibilities for further expansion: energy trade; energy storage; energy harvesting... and so on.

I'm not sure NQ really has "intent" in their designs, but if they did....I think their intent with this last change was to reduce server loads, which was successful.

In a way, this makes sense.

We all see that release isn't going to go great...we knew this months ago when it was first announced. NQ knows this, too.

They will market the hell out of this game to people that have never heard of it, make trailers look just as promising and misleading as beta, and collect as much as they can from this one wave of new players post release.

They know they'll only have those few months before the player population crashes, just as it did with beta. If this is their one chance to monetize and they know they can't make the game sustainable, why not reduce costs across the board...? Every cost that's cut means more profit during the one opportunity they have to make it.

It isn't like spending the last few months trying to make this game sustainable and scalable would have worked anyway...there's just way too much technical and design debt. Changes like this are sadly logical.

NQ's leadership has made clear that they're working on other projects...IMO, they're preparing DU for release knowing it won't scale or stabilize because they believe they can still make them some money before it goes offline, hopefully enough to fund one of these "other projects" (read: scammy NFT BS) to completion.

They're probably right, too...with some good marketing, plenty of gamers would plop down $10 to give this concept a try.

I wonder if they'll change back to a minimum of 3 months for a sub...that would really make this "strategy" work.

IMO a wipe (of everything except talent points and core BPs) is pretty much a certainty.  It's hard to see how they could do anything else at this point and they have been acting like this is going to happen.  They aren't even bothering to hide it any more really.  For example they wiped everyone's talents without even taking the time to make up a plausible reason and in the last update they handed a bunch of players billions of quanta in schematic refunds despite some of those players having bought the schematics at 1% cost some time ago.

This is pretty much the scenario which is emerging. This change to schematics basically undoes their introduction in 0.23 and creates a mechanic which is gear towards exactly what it is supposed to prevent. And it contradicts what NQ announced and explained their intention for the mechanic is completely.

Your average player will mostly be able to "research" the needed schematics for anything they need or want to build. There is no need for big industry, not is there a point in doing what I think the intent for NQ was, break up industry in smaller pieces and make it work more like it does in EVE where players specialize in specific components/parts and trade those through te market/economy.

I've said this before, but this is NQ trying to do the proverbial "hammer a cube through a triangle hole". They really should have seen this result coming had they done their homework, but as it stands it seems they did their usual "let's just see what happens", without putting much thought into it OR it's just another change to just reduce server cost, which in light of some of the comments made by especially Deckard is certainly possible.

Yeah..  I was really looking forward to that. It was a bummer that JC announced the changes did not make it to beta nut still hopeful when he said that they'd bring it in during (with a wipe). The hammer fell when he announced that it would not happen after all but that we'd get a whole new solar system instead to compensate plus everything else and all that within a year (source).

That kind of told me he was really just full of BS and had been stringing us along. It was where I more or less went to the side of "NQ is not going to deliver the game they promised/set out to make" and it pretty much played out that way...

JC's vision was great but his execution of said vision and management of the company was about as bad as it gets. Which is also why he found himself kicked out.

It would be amazing if NQ manages to get the new planet tech in and gives us "a whole new world" to play with for release. I'd love to be able to get behind NQ pulling a massive rabbit out of the hat for release, but I think that is at best a very slim possibility and it's more likely we get what we have now instead.
