At the moment how this is setup it could really be a semi browser game as the wait for talents and new schematics will be the best progress you can get add checking markets to that and, technically if those things can be done on a browser bar probably far over 50% of current players have no reason to log in.
Since the daily stuff is all minigames nobody asked for and the actual still is limited more and more everyday we kinda have not much left then to check inventories, markets, talents and maybe industry. And with the crappy chat system where there are 10 to 20 boxes to shuffle i do not even think about clicking those, for social chat ingame this system kinda sucks.
If it was released with everything we had pre 0.23 i would have believed it would work, and even that the progress on to do stuff would get there, the momentum was right.  A slight F.Up on 0.23 with the clear message that it would not be turned back what followed by mass exploids and developers who did really fishy stuff Killed momentum. And it has not been back since.

How the hell do you manage to loose players during a global closedown where everyone has nothing else to do at home then play.
Forgot to make a plan? Server tech is really that bad? We all remember lag-city i guess but that was a perfect moment to learn and grow and evolve. Sorry to say but i think you threw out the kid with the bathwater and throwing JC out did not do any good either as he was the embodiment of the whole vision. Although slightly blurred in the end he did bring the fire we all loved

Having schematics removed was one main reason for wipe.
Now schematics issue is resolved without wiping. There is no real reason for wipe.

Being forced to care about quanta has been a hard adjustment for me as well. There was a long time where it was not necessary if you were making things yourself, and since there really were not interesting ways to make it, I just ignored it. It is impossible to ignore now (and still no interesting ways to earn quanta). If the economy had any semblance of balance and there was a variety of interesting ways to earn quanta, I don't think this would be an issue. As it stands now, I would rather live off the grid, but that is really not practical.

.23 wasn't really a big deal after schematic prices were lowered, if that's all it takes to lose you interest in the game then don't bother. Even if .23 never happened, people would've gotten bored with everything else and left. There still lacks an incentive to stay in the long term, other than the creative building part

Honestly? I've given up by now. I no longer have the energy to constantly argue with a wall, I no longer have the will to think about how to help the game, I'm running out of ideas about what could be improved, yet there were so many ideas written down here. I'm just exhausted and I don't see any will that NQ really wants to save the game. Savings have been made for months and years, and investment would help much more. I'll just wait and see what happens....

This also introduced a game loop too. Imagine that.

Problem is NQ only focuses on mechanics and engine. They don't understand game theory and design/development.

Maybe speak for yourself instead of explaining other people's thoughts and motivations. There's a lot more opinions than the simple dichotomy you're presenting.

I do see how this change makes it easier on new players...but also see how this changes the nature of industry at scale, which removes yet another core pillar of the game, reducing overall engagement.

Exploration isn't a thing, anymore, because mining is gone. Wrecks obviously don't count as a real exploration mechanic to anyone that's tried.
    Mining isn't a thing anymore, it's a timer.
Missions are mostly NPC missions slowboating, that's not fun to me or to most people.
Now industry...it's still a feature, but with these changes, it limits how much time you can really spend on it.

To be clear, this change wouldn't be a problem if DU was like other MMOs, overflowing with other things to do.

If that were the case, I'd be far more open to this change, because I understand (very well with a lot of real experience) why scaling factories is difficult.

But...DU isn't that game. It's a game that's always suffered from a lack of feature depth, which NQ's recent crop of changes have made far worse. So we can't scale factories anymore...okay, that wouldn't be a huge deal on its own...but then, what can we do? Build bases that don't do anything? Fly ships that don't need to go anywhere?

They keep talking about cost and making changes to reduce cost....but where are these resources going? There needs to be something to do at scale -- it isn't industry, it isn't mining, it isn't missions, it sure as hell isn't PvP.

Looking back on when this beta launched and thinking "hey, there was actually more stuff to do then than there is now" isn't a great sign that this is an MMO that can grow and expand.

That's the fundamental issue I have with these changes...it takes a game with little feature depth and makes it even more shallow.

At this stage, things should be progressing the other direction. Instead, development is going backwards...making the game less and less feature-rich and engaging with every patch in the name of cost. It was NQ's job to design and develop a working game knowing the limits of infrastructure, as every professional engineer in the world does.

This is one of the most basic and obvious facets of developing an MMO and isn't something you think about only in the months before release.

Pretending that NQ will finish features that are far beyond their reach as of today is equally constructive... 🤷‍♂️

Maybe I'm misunderstanding your post about piracy, that's definitely very possible...but it sounded to me like you were explaining a state of balance that exists only in the future and depends on features that aren't even planned.

I don't view that as constructive because release is coming up soon...and players will judge the state of balance as it exists today, not based on x, y, and z feature that may never materialize.

Experience does matter when trying to speculate about the state of the game and its abilities, especially when there's so little information from the studio itself.

    Cyrille Fontaine...their lead designer.

To copy from another thread, his credits include:
1993's "Pac in Time" by Kalisto 1993's "Fury of the Furries" by Mindscape 1997's "Nightmare creatures" by Activision 2015's "Trivial Pursuit" by Gameloft S.E. (yes the board game) The will might be there, but he isn't an experienced designer for big or complex games...never mind MMOs. I think the will might be greater than the ability.

I don't intend that to be harsh...arcade/simple games are not easy to design for. When mechanics are simple, there's nowhere to hide. But clearly these types of games are radically different than big, complex games or MMOs.

So...I wouldn't hold my breath that these concepts ever come, especially since these features would have to arrive post-release, and I don't expect the player counts to be high enough to support the game's ongoing dev.

Regardless of server load/balancing issues being uses as an excuse for changes, the main problem still remains.
There is hardly any fun way to make quanta in this game. Everything is a chore. Mining is a chore, missions is a chore, industry has been turned into a chore.. and so on. So unlike when grinding in other MMO's, there is no sense of achievement or progression. Just mindless tedium repeating the same tasks over and over. And that is just bad game design, no matter how you look at it.

Say what you will about Star Citizen, but you gotta respect them for correctly classifying their game, and treating it as an alpha with regular wipes and doing what they can to develop their game.

I'm not sure if these questions or the answers are really what players are currently concerned about.
I often have the impression with all the Lua questions that you didn't want to create a game, but a playground for Lua writers, whether professional or as a hobby.
The question about Sanctuary and Haven was unfortunately uninteresting for me. It would be much more important how a game release looks like with these two moons and the players. In the event of a "wipe" for all players, will there only be Haven or do you "have" to keep your Sanctuary tile? If we were to lose everything, does the new system with the base and launch plane also come to Sanctuary with landing and choosing what to build?
When will there finally be information for us players on how DualUniverse will continue? Fewer and fewer are playing because hardly anyone is motivated to play or even log in anymore due to the wipe idea. It's a terrible state of affairs at the moment - why are you delaying such information?

No, they rolled out schematics 1.5 years ago.

This idea that they "don't have the time" to fix a core mechanic that they've apparently known was broken for over a year and a half is just silly.

This argument that NQ is constantly out of time is completely nonsense...compared to any other studio of similar size, a year and a half to make a rudimentary, simple change like this would be unthinkable.

They're out of time either because the game doesn't have solid engineering and every tiny little change therefore takes an eternity, or because they have so few people working on DU (NQ is very clear that DU isn't their only project) it only has the bare minimum of development resources.

They really didn't "spend a lot of dev time" on this. They refactored it away without any intermediate changes. No one forced them to bury ore so deep, and they never tried less performance-demanding techniques (of which there are many).

Again, this plays into their love of false dichotomy: "we had to remove ore because it required too much infra" as if the only two options are "unsustainable" or "auto-miner" -- and that's not the case.

Besides, the way professionals make software is to design and test for scale before you're months away from release...especially as an MMO, it's really puzzling that NQ keeps saying they are out of time as if they had no opportunity in the last 6+ years to understand how their design would scale.

I have to point out how this is classic, frustratingly common example of a false dichotomy.

They are making it sound like the only alternative is building without limits...like we're the ones that don't understand how scaling works when NQ has had so many troubles with it...

That's really unfair, when so many ideas for gating have been discussed...a creative designer could certainly find many worlds of possibility between unlimited production and shoveling paper into burners. That's their job.

This is a very common thing that people do, presenting it like you are unreasonable because the only two choices are this change or the old way.

So effectively, two years of beta has provided us with .. cost reduction and capping what players can do.

Normally you'd run the numbers before you start designing something that can accommodate those numbers.  NQ is working in full reverse in this regard.

And this message pretty much tells us NQ is not done yet.. This implementation clearly is still way too liberal for their goals and so they will put on the limiters even tighter in the weeks ahead .

That NQ is comparing their operation to a "private server owned by a friend" just is the icing on the cake and for me really drives home the desperation they feel around keeping their game servers running and the cost this incurs for them.

No NQ, this is not "a private server owned by a friend". This is a commercial enterprise where you charge more than your average private server would cost per account per month to provide less and less freedom and move away further and further from what you set out to build back in 2014.

You were supposed to be building a single shard world where hundreds of thousands (if not "millions") of players can interact, build, fight and have fun "without limitation". It seems you are not able to deliver that from what we're seeing here.

And no, that is not toxic, unconstructive or unfair. It is a realistic observation based on which I form the opinion I am entitled to have and share as feedback. Feel free to show me I'm wrong as so far, I see nothing that even comes close to doing so.

    I guess I was wrong ...

After setting up 10 alts using summer DAC, teleporting them to my base and giving them 10 million each, they are now all copying schematics to the effect that in 4 days I can build _anything_ ..

No need to travel, no load on the servers, no need to interact with anyone and no hassle.. just wait 4 days and we're golden..

I guess we're all wrong and this masterful rework by NQ is working as intended /s

So they implemented them without any changes or any PTR cycle. *sigh*

Sorry, but the new mechanic is just terrible. Where in human civilization do you have to copy a plan/schematic every time you want to build something in your factory? It's so stupid, and clearly just time/char-gating.

What's the point in a fuel line set to Maintain, when now I have to run round with schematics all the time? Multiplied by x number of goods that you need to make on a regular basis...

Or you are in the middle of a build, and need another few thousand voxels...sorry, might as well just logoff because you're gonna have to wait to queue up the schematics, and then wait for them to download, because your hi-tech assembly unit has forgotten how to make it. I guess computers suck in the future.

Come on NQ, can you guys not see how bad this whole system is from a gameplay perspective?

    Ridiculous.
