    I don't know about

I don't know about "people not be able to". Certainly it should be really freakin hard to do, must be done "in game" (i.e - you must physically break into the secret lab and stealz the blueprint!) and be also quite hard to then dispose of to buyers etc (i.e. you shouldn't be able to just throw "illegal" items like stolen goods into the marketplace).

To me - there is just so much rich game play to be had with something like a blueprint in play! I mean - you wouldn't even have Star Wars Rogue One (let alone the original SW:IV Death Star mission) without stolen plans Blueprints are a plot device to be reckoned with!

    Copyright eh?

With props to the OP (who poses the question - and it is a good one, so no flame intended, I'm just a sarky bastard...)

While Aetherios is indeed correct (show off  ), might I also posit the following:

"If someone buy's your ship and then uses that to make their own version, or steals your blueprint and does the same, and does either in such a way that is still within the ToS (no RL hacking for instance) and the RDMS, well yes - you probably are completely within your rights to prosecute that person for breach of copyright and or IP infringement.

Now - just point me towards your copyright lawyer, and the local Alioth court house and lawyer, and the underpinning legal framework you're working under and we'll get this sorted.

Oh - you mean that in this lawless godforsaken world, that guy I just shot in the face for coughing near me was your lawyer? Bummer..."

OK - serious face on again - stuff like copyright, ownership etc, IN GAME (and not as determined by a game mechanic designed to simply manage the assets of the game) is all Role Play.

Out of game / game mechanic  wise - while the RDMS will manage things as Aetherios states - that in itself creates the awesome counter-game mechanic (or playing opportunity) to develop a black market / knock off industry.

I personally think that if made right it would really add richness to the game. (Someone remind me to put these in the idea box):

    a) You could have "uniques" - original creations by real players - the thing which serves as the template for the blueprints (which could then be mass produced). While mass produced versions may actually be the same or even superior in stats, the fact that a "unique" is by definition unique, creates essentially both a market for Art etc, but also drives a realistic system of people being recognised as master craftsmen.

"This baby? It's an ATMLVE original, not one of them cheap [insert ship company org name here] knock-offs. Gonna cost you triple."

You could have "masterpieces" - items which, in the process of original creation, are just "better" than anything even the AI's can reproduce. Again, adding to the value chain of craftsmen vs mass producing from blueprints.

    c) Custom pieces and once off's - items (tagged in the RDMS as "no-blueprint" or the like) - unique pieces of art or equipment which can't be reproduced (or shouldn't be). This would include art, possibly food (nothing tastes quite right when made with a machine?), custom weapons and ships.

    d) Knock-offs The game could have a reverse-engineering skill, allowing you to deconstruct an item and make a blue print out of it. Items thus produced would be tagged as "knock-offs" and will ALWAYS be inferior in quality and specifications. Of course - one could then improve upon a knock-off blueprint to make something even better than the original idea.

    e) An inventor tag. This one I think is important. Rather than "locking" a design/item to the original creator (which is kinda a game mechanic for "intellectual property" which I'm still not sure I agree with in terms of it could limit RPG gameplay in that sense), make sure that EVERY item/ship/weapon/thing that gets invented/made has an Inventor tag. It becomes a part of our collective history - when we look back in two years and wonder where some ubiquitous item or design which just "works" comes from, that 50 organisations produce as a staple, we always know who to give the real kudos to.

Anyway - just some drive by thoughts per usual.

I'm pretty sure if they were, it was probably Chris Odom there from Stash.

I was involved heavily in Open Transactions for a few years, as well as Bitcoin (I started the Austin Bitcoin Meetup) but lately I have been avoiding anything major and finally just relaxing.

I don't particularly have a big interest in FinTech either, I came into the picture looking to find a solution to censorship resistant markets. I spent several years working on various approaches, and playing around with p2p stuff. I wrote an app that can make BitMessage act like a decentralized fileserver, and it kind of turns it into TahoeFS, although I gave up on that project for a while because I couldn't figure out some issues. There is a lot of interesting potential out there, and doing that kind of research was really fun.

In OT, I was working with others on voting pools, or rather, ways to have bitcoin exchanges that couldn't steal your money, and wherein an exchange being shut down would not mean losing access to your money. That has been a long project though, and I'm not sure how far they are along with it. On paper the idea works, implementing it securely was a whole other issue, even for a company full of cryptographers.

I'm pretty sure positive that OpenBazaar was influenced by Open Transactions, not only because they used the name "Bazaar" after it showed up in the OT desktop client "Moneychanger" under the markets tab, but also because they came into the OT IRC room asking for input way back before they launched.

I proposed a material/material quality/molecule group based stats generation system, so depending of the quality and rarity of the materials used you may have different stats.

I want crafting of objects to be rather open...

    1. I'd like visually for objects to have skins... and detail dyeable... maybe even contests for people to submit their 3D models for inclusion in the game during a later update...
    2. The stats of whatever object determined by the materials... mods... gear... circuits... whatever you want to call them... that's slotted into them.
    3. The process of putting the stat carrying items into a object skin requires skill and trade offs and synergies.

Imagine if there was functionality to contact other ships with LUA. Or even connect to them to send packets of data which can Control the ship or simply send an order. Imagine being in one ship sand sending a request to open a voice channel to speak to whoever owns it. It would be great to have some form of wireless scripting. So maybe I can send a key to a ship of mine which disables it if it's stolen? I feel this can be a creative aspect to explore as many organisation can make heavy use of it.

Similar to Computercraft which is a Minecraft Mod. They use a small function known as rednet to communicate to other devices.

Actually as a reality check - that's a really good point.

What will the terrain around the Ark look like when we emerge. Or, to put it another way...

This is the size of the crater left by something hitting the Earth at great velocity or a lot of mass. Something like an Arkship for instance. See that tiny speck in the middle there?

That's an entire abandoned mining complex. Person cutout shown for scale.

    So thoughts:

    a) the "safe-zone" will be the crater. (There will have to be a crater. Can't see how there couldn't be a real impact site)

the starting area will likely be devoid of all life, plant or animal - a true sandbox. Mineral resources will likely be easily obtainable without much mining? (potentially including alloys etc - material created in during the impact event itself), and we'll likely carry seed stock etc on the ship to get food started. But beyond that... /shrug.

    Great topic btw.

Since every single player will start in the same Arkship, which I believe has been said, what might end up surrounding the Arkship eventually? Will it become a sprawling metropolis? I imagine it will be pretty significantly developed. How will what is surrounding the ship affect new players? There certainly won't be any resources available for long.

And if I don't have that right, and there are several Arkships, then the questions go for all of them.

This actually leads me to another question which is, how does the player get started?

Actually, you're just thinking about this using a traditional, (quite old now) MMO lens.

DU's content is player-made. But not entirely as far as we know - that could happen. But, more's the point - Alioth, the system, the Universe - as we discover these things (and given procedural generation) - this is new content. Persistent new content.

And really - that's what the REAL value proposition of a P2P system over DU is - it never gets turned off. That's the beauty of all this.

They are starting their development journey now, with a drop date of Dec. 18. One only has to consider the ubiquitous techs which will be in play at that point that WoW and EvE can't match.

For instance - today, No Man's Sky, despite criticism, shows the power of procedural generation at scale - DU will take that further.

And with the advent of blockchain tech - DU could leverage Distributed Application technologies - (bet they are already looking at it) - the beauty of which is that you can make an MMO as awesome as DU, with massively reduced server costs, as the more people play, the more compute power you effectively get. (Check out Zeronet website's for instance). And literally, the "servers" in models like that can't crash as the data comprising the universe becomes peer to peer and consensus based - essentially any modern online game, on steroids, with a single source of uncorruptible truth at it's core. That both we and NQ made.

THAT's why I'll pay a sub happily - because I'm paying for persistence. And a sub means that if I want to take a 2 month break or even a one year break - say I go on an overseas holiday or if I was a soldier, get deployed - I can. I reactivate my account and EVERYTHING is as it was, but changed in a way that has provenance - a real change history just like the real world. No resets, no take backs. The closest thing to a real (in a persistent tangible, non-transient or ethereal sense) alternate reality you will ever likely see.

Don't get me wrong - all good things come to an end, I know - but while DU is alive, it will be a single game continuum - you will really make history - and that's worth it.
