GraXXoR reacted to blazemonger in The Grand Haul - Panacea Update
NQ has decided to move in a direction which may not be agreeable for some, and guess what.. That will be the case for _anything_ NQ does.

I can see how this choice is two faced, on one hand it is a possible turn off for players who left if and when they decide to "try again" and find their stuff is all gone.
On the other hand, I can also see how it has always been very clear that the only place your personal stuff is ever going to be really safe is on your Sanctuary territory.

I certainly can agree that the feeding frenzy NQ created around markets is the less desirable option and that there have been suggestions of far more elegant and "game play" options to achieve the same result. On top of that, there is no requirement for anyone to make the rounds in person (it's easy to work around that) to reset the 7 day timers on their container or advertisement constructs and so it is not unlikely that in a week or two the whole thing just starts over and the now cleared pads are filled with junk again.

NQ does not have a habit of being creative in their solutions, in fact they are not a company to actually deal with issue, they mostly obscure or work around them and the reasons for that can only be speculated about but I think that badly (if at all) documented spaghetti code is probably at least part of that.

The funny bit here is that the exact same applies to the current state of combat gameplay in game though, but that is probably something you'd not want to see.

There is no "fairplay" in PVP right now. You get locked, you are pretty much dead. If you are a non-combatant, you have no recourse to mitigate the risks of PVP. As it stands, combat in DU is pretty much a one-sided affair if one of the involved parties really has no interest in such engagements. PVP in DU generally is pretty much about " steal things from people who can't defend themselves" outside of arranged fights.

I am not sure how this is a problem. If you place trust in people, you run the risk of getting taken advantage of. It's the same thing in many other similar games.

A fair point would be to say that RDMS and the options to check on new org members is something that needs work, but in principle, I have no problem with sabotage and spying gameplay. The problem here is the players who can't keep their personal wet dreams in check and just abuse the mechanics to grief "because they can". But that should never prevent those that will "play the game" and RP their way into a position where they can sell out or call in their actual friends for being able to do that.

This is a sandbox MMO and the game has clear RP angles, stuff like this come with the territory but as with so many things in the game, NQ really has not fleshed out all the options and facets of gameplay yet. And we can only hope they eventually will, or the game may turn into a griefing party..

I'm not sure how exactly military parts would work.. would they have 50% extra lift and 400% drag or something? (to match the ratio of thrust to fuel consumption of the engine parts)

would military adjustors or brakes need fuel to operate? There would have to be some disadvantage to go with the advantages of more power beyond just price.

Am I the only one who wants a wider range of elements such as large wings and ailerons so that we don't have to have a row or bank of 20 to do anything.

How about some XL atmo and rocket engines to go with the XL space engines...or an XS Space fuel tank? I'm fed up of having to cart a massive barrel of lard around with me just to use Vertical Thrusters.
Also, while you're at it, could I have some super cool XS hover pads... Maybe half the size and power of the current ones (say 2 x 2 voxels or something)  so we can put one front and back or on each corner of a transport and not have it look like a meth cooking-spoon?
This would be great for some truly minimal, and maybe even speedy, personal transport!

There are plenty of easy games in the market.
I was attracted to this game because of the difficulty of the sandbox.

if you build a ship that doesn’t fly, you crash and die.
Overload your ship? Crash and die.
don’t add weapons to your ship when traveling out of the safe zone? You die.

im a fan of games where people have to take responsibility and face real consequences for their decisions.

I’m fed up with hand holding and on rails experiences which is why I love DU.

but making everything super easy and challenge free is not the way to go.

Elite dangerous did that and now progression to Anaconda, the original “end game ship” which took me a year to acquire back in 2014 2015 can now be achieved in a day with a bit of planning.

I do find this whole PvP vs PvE players thing distracting, though. It’s really a straw man for deeper issues.

It's is explicitly not about scale, but since we're at it:

300 tiles and you're talking something roughly the size of malta

There in 9 nations in the world with 5000 or less inhabitants.

What I am trying to say, and you seem to hellbent on interpreting differently:

If there is only player-player interractions, the endgame will necessarily and 100% revolve around PVP or rather org vs org. Given the slow pace of progress and how you can not protect your assets 24-7, it makes players dependant on an org that can impose some sense of lawfulness, basically assuming many functions of the nationstate. If there are only player-player interractions the game NEEDS to be that hardcore, but you are setting yourself up for dissapointment.

Much better to give the players things to do that do not necessarily revolve around other players, on top of all the things we were getting for a "player-driven universe". That way 99% of players don't feel compelled to cannibalise on eachother as sole source of entertainment. Progress is way too slow and labor intensive in this game for that to be fun.

Honestly how did we wind up arguing you seem to agree about the need for PVE.

Our org once had a 6kT ship transporter. it had two rows of M Ailerons stacked from top to bottom of the build cube, so about 400 of them.
If you weren't on a beast CPU (this game appears to be far more CPU demanding than GPU) then you entered the realm of Power Point Presentations.  Like single digit.
If we had access to L or even XL parts, things would have been much better..

If VR was involved, it would be an instant barf-fest.

    Agreeed

Some people start to blow chunks after 15 minutes in VR even at 90 fps which is considered the minimum generally tolerable framerate.
120fps is far superior and less likely to end up with players decorating their keyboards in rainbow stew.

VR systems perform tricks like reprojection and interpolation when a game drops the odd frame here and there but there's no way a regular joe could stand VR in DU at even 30 fps (which is fast for DU), it would likely having players parking a tiger and keeling over unconscious in minutes of putting on a headset.

My stomach had grown an iron grade tolerance for VR a few years back, so much so that I could play Elite Dangerous CQC with 6 degrees of freedom (think starwars trench run) for hours without feeling sick, but I nearly delivered a pavement pizza last week when I tried to get back into CQC after over 2 years away.

Even after all these years Elite Dangerous (pre-Odyssey) is still the best VR experience I've ever had, though but FDEV's original pre-Odyssey COBRA engine could sustain 120 fps even in fairly complex scenes. DU? Not so much.

you can get all 6 directions in space by adding space engines in all six directions.
ALT A or D strafes left / right.
Scroll mouse for forwards / reverse.
    space will strafe you up
    C will strafe you down

IF you have engines pointing in the correct directions. Keep them as close to facing the XYZ directions as possible rather than diagonals and stuff.

Now you’re just being silly… LOL

you CAN reassign the keys using LUA or you can just any of your favourite keyboard reassignment / macro software / joystick gremlin.

Am I missing something obvious in this conversation?

All of my ships that are not focused on out and out max speed, have sideways and front facing engines a rank (sometimes two) smaller than the main rear facing engines.

If you make those engines advanced manoeuvre engines or rare manoeuvre engines, then there is pretty much no warmup time. They react immediately. Default key is alt plus A or D for lateral motion. or scroll wheel back for reverse.

This makes parking super simple. Although of course a heavy freighter means relatively low acceleration.

If said ship is also space capable then I add top and bottom facing space engines too, to allow full three axis motion. Vertical space engines can behave weirdly on re-entry into planet’s atmosphere, though.

I created a number of small transporters for ferrying gear to and fro on the base. These craft are omnidirectional and have identical thrust backwards left and right and quadruple forward thrust for a bit more speed in regular flight.

Using LUA I remapped the forward reverse left right strafe keys to the regular WASD keys. Now I have a platform that can travel in all four directions very precisely without banking. Space and C key control vertical offset.

GraXXoR reacted to Megabosslord in Why I'm Leaving DU...
You only skimmed the post, right?

Frustration with the neighbour (and it was actually several neighbours I'd tracked down, all who left a year ago with no intention of ever coming back - one who asked to be paid in Starbase to handover DU assets, all with very abrasive comments on DU and NQ), combined with waiting 9 mths for the solution, given hope, then having it deceptively taken away again, were only the final straw.

No. It was death by 1000 cuts.

Demeter screwed me. It took away the ore I'd mapped but hadn't mined yet, took away my scans (another last-minute reversal, after doing MORE scans because we were told they'd be kept). It ganked my space elevators (Caterpillars thrown out of alignment by geometry reset combined with 'manual control' crash). It trashed my base (which was high on a terraformed ramp, meaning after the geometry reset it was left floating high in the air, inaccessible, for which there was no 'excavation request' type solution despite my raising it during PTS:

Then I wasted hours and millions in quanta setting up mining ops that got locked up by the core overlap bug, put in 2 excavation requests that failed, had a ship tokenisation error. All this after I'd been wrestling for weeks with problems trying to get a multi-core static BP ready for sale, and gradual realising there was nothing on the horizon to improve head-aches for builders like this:

I still had big plans, having spent months building the giant floating island with a system in mind to convert it to space cores and build this:

But my base and space elevators were fragged, my support requests were getting incrementally less helpful replies (like suggesting reinstalling the game to fix what was clearly a game bug) and there was no light on the horizon that NQ were ever going to do anything to make dealing with L static and space BPs easier. If anything, it was getting harder.

I'd previously gotten rolled on the "new screen tech" API that mooted 3 mths of work on my multi-player roulette table, and still had a backlog of a months work updating ~150 screens in my store.

The only thing I had left to look forward to, was the promised abandoned subscriber tile clean-up.

Then a worrying thought entered my head. "What if NQ back-flip on this, like they did on scans?" I mean, surely not twice in a row, right? But to be safe, I thought I better come here and say a few words about why I thought wiping unsubbed player tiles is a good thing:
That post felt redundant, because it had already been decided. And there are obvious reasons for it, beyond my post: Like the performance improvement of not rendering abandoned constructs - which is inevitably only going to get worse. Or the disincentive to unsubscribe on a whim and mothball in-game assets till launch.

Anyway, Pann had liked my Tweet saying this was my favourite thing about Demeter...

    Finally, a win.

Then, a few hours later, NQ steal-patched HQ tiles for unsubbed players.

The several players around me who despised DU, who'd played for a few weeks and quit over a year ago, were protected.

It was precisely at that point that I realised I had zero faith left in where DU was going. No way of knowing. No trust in any announcements made. And without that, there's just no way to plan projects on the kind of scale that I like to work. Projects that take months and hundreds of hours.

That's what it really boils down to: WIthout at least a little predictability on what is coming next, or a clear process and probability for getting a feature request considered, there's no point investing any significant amount of time in the game. And predictability has dropped to zero.

People seem to be ignoring this response. Let me say that adjustors are intended to produce TORQUE without producing linear FORCE (thrust). This makes it much easier to to build ships that can point in any direction without inducing drift. I personally like the fact that DU uses physical laws instead of video game physics when possible.

The moment I realized my mistake was when I went into VR (erasing my talents) and my primary org still had 425 max-cores available, but the other two had zero. The other legate I mentioned is only a legate in the primary org, not the other two.
