Good server so far with good intentions behind it. I mean, really, if you have an org over 10 members there isn't any reason not to sign up. It's got some pretty damn fine memes.

Project Hyperlink is an initiative started by Luminous in an effort to create an open forum for org leaders to discuss issues and share projects,
without the hassle of joining a billion servers or creating infinite DM groups.

An org must at least have 10 members on the community site, or pass the quality standard. An org must agree to the guidelines written below.
    Project Hyperlink Guidelines
An org can have a maximum of 3 representatives including the org leader. An org can bring up any topic for discussion. An org can share projects in the dedicated channels. An org leader/representative cannot officially represent multiple subsidiaries and the whole. They can either represent the whole, or one of the subsidiaries. (They can still speak on their behalf unofficially)
Project Hyperlink is moderated by Luminous staff. The guidelines above also apply to Luminous with the exception of the representative limit.

This short story (around 5000 words) is set on Earth before the technology required for the Arkships (and more) were entirely completed. This story does not include any DU organisations nor does it reference any arbitrarily named gaming organisations outside of DU.

    Enjoy.

    ---------First paragraph snippet---------
I am a broken man. At least that is what the shrinks say. They say I’m too broken to continue in the Centauri Special Forces. But if one of the powerful nation states pays for your training, they own you. So that’s how I became stuck as a Tester, a guinea pig, for Centauri scientists. On the bright side, they gave me a place to stay, even if it is a single room apartment that you couldn’t swing a proverbial cat in. Centauri also provides a seemingly unlimited cereal molded into multicolored letters of the alphabet. Today, the cereal spells out “freedom” which quickly sinks away and then spells “dominated”. I stare at the word knowing if I blink it will instantly rearrange itself into the usual random jumble of letters. For taunting me, I teach it a lesson by biting into another mouthful. It might look colourful, but it tastes like week old sweaty socks.

    How will it be secure?

Loans etc i understand, but unless money will be a physical object in game, there is literally no reason to put money away with a bank, and no reason for the bank to do it as interest will just make the bank loose money.

How on earth will you enforce changes in discord reflecting in game transfers? Even if you could enforce it, you have to physical be at where the resources are to get them, unless you hire someone to bring them to you, costing people who use this service more. In game local markets will prosper for this reason.

While i can see in game stocks in orgs becoming a thing through private investment groups such as luminous, i cant see why someone would do it through your system instead of contacting the organisation directly, as for a business, which you are, to profit, money has to be took from somewhere, so it is likely you would be charging a fee on top of it.

    Hi everyone,

All right, the three pages that revolved into a flame war have been archived.

    @Paul Nicolas:
As you are new on the forum, this is a first (but also the last) warning.

Your posts have broken several forum and/or EULA rules, among which:
    - starting a flame war when nobody has agressed you.
    - being particularly rude by calling people dicks and using some inappropriate text emoticons.
    - suggesting to sell your account to someone else.

Being a gold backer gives you rights, but absolutely not those stated above.
If you continue with this behavior, your account can be banned with no refund possible (as you break the rules you explicitly accepted first when you created a Dual Universe account, to post on the forum and play the game).

    @everyone:
When you see something that is obviously the beginning of a flame war, just report it and don't respond to this kind of provocation.

    Thank you for your understanding.

    Best Regards,
    Nyzaltar.

Don't worry. What was won last year won't be modified, it's yours ^^
Nothing will be downgraded, only upgraded if necessary. If the reward is "useless" for you (for example you win a Gold pack you already have or you win a Silver or Bronze while being Gold), we can consider gifting it to a friend of your choice. You'll have to tell us who and we'll take care of it.

    Hi guys,

It's time once again for NovaWrimo! If you don't remember what it is or you're new around here, let’s catch you up.

    What is NovaWrimo?
NovaWrimo is a contest inspired by "Nanowrimo" (National Novel Writing Month) that happens during the month of November (from November, 1st to November, 30th). The goal of NanoWrimo is to write a 50,000-word novel in 30 days. If you're curious, here's the official Nanowrimo website: http://nanowrimo.org/.

    NovaWrimo is slightly different:

It's not strictly tied to the month of November (meaning we might hold similar contests several times a year). To be accessible to a broader range of participants, the minimum word count is only 5,000 words instead of 50,000. Ideally, entries would have a word count between 5,000 and 7,500 words. Depending on the number of entries, it can take a lot of time to review everything. Of course, if you're really inspired and the result very good, there's no hard limit. Who are we to tell Shakespeare when to stop?
    The rules:
The 2017 NovaWrimo contest starts today, Thursday, November 30th, 2017 at 9:30 PM PST.  It will end on Sunday, January 7th at 11:30 PM PST. The story should be compatible with what is known of the Dual Universe backstory so far.
    For reference:
The Official Dual Universe Lore Bible The short story written by Alain Damasio The mods of the novel by Alain Damasio mentioned in the beginning of this post, some info here and here too The Backstory Page of the official website   Some more recent information
If you spot an inconsistency between the different sources, the Official Lore Bible should be considered authoritative.

The story must happen between 2049 and 2450. (Between the creation of the United Earth Federation (UEF), the transnational institution in charge of coordinating humanity’s efforts and response to the Star Kiss of Death (SKiD) and the time when the Arkship technology is finally mastered). No alien creatures should be involved. Physical violence should be limited (No gore or similar things).  Verbal violence and cursing is tolerated but should be limited and not gratuitous. Explicit sexual content isn't allowed. Hate speech toward specific people, ethnic groups, or religions isn't allowed. You must submit your text in the form of a PDF file and you must attach it to a dedicated topic (with the tag [NovaWrimo2017] in the title) you created in the "Novaquark Archives" forum section. The PDF file must not exceed 500 kb in size. You also must send your file in Word or .txt format to both Nyzaltar and Nomad to be eligible. You can do so by private message on the forum. By submitting a fan fiction with the tag [NovaWrimo2017] in the topic title, the poster will explicitly cede author rights to Novaquark. While these texts won't be sold in any form, they might be used (fully or partially) as promotional materials or in marketing campaigns for the game Dual Universe. For more information, please read our "Terms of Use" and our EULA. You also must accept and you must respect the legal conditions bound to your Dual Universe account (the aforementioned game's EULA, but also the Terms of Use, Privacy Policy, and NDA if relevant). Your submission must be written in English. Your submission must not contain elements or information under NDA you may have found while playing the Pre-Alpha. A non-native English writer can seek help from a native English speaker to polish the text in English. The native English speaker must be aware that it can help only on a volunteer basis: he won't be eligible for any reward. If a non-native English writer seeks help from a native English speaker, he/she must submit the complete text before proofreading. Once his/her text is proofread, he/she will have to keep both pre-proofread and post-proofread versions of the text available on the forum. If several people collaborate on a story, please be aware that only the individual submitting the entry on the forum will be eligible to win any prizes or awards. We will not have group prizes available.  Because the juries are completely different, a participant may win a Novaquark prize and the Community prize. You may submit multiple entries, however, you may only win one Novaquark prize.  If an entry does not meet all of the requirements for eligibility (not reaching the minimum word count, missing the deadline by a few days, etc.), the author won't be considered as eligible for the Novaquark and the Community prizes. However, it may still be considered as a participant to the contest. It will be up to the Novaquark team to decide on a case by case basis.  Late entries will not be eligible for either the Novaquark or Community prizes, but will still be considered as participants.  A gentle reminder more than a rule: please consider the reading comfort of your future readers by formatting your text in a way that makes it easily readable (make sure to put some space between your paragraphs, etc.).
    The rewards:
    1st Prize:
    1 Digital Gold Founder Pack

    2nd Prize:
    1 Digital Silver Pack

    3rd Prize:
    1 Bronze Pack
    1 Closed Beta Key

    Last year winners were:
    • 1st Prize: Aetherios, for his short story "That Bright Dawn"
    • 2nd Prize: Temerian, for his short story "Rebirth"
    • 3rd Prize: Devious_T, for his short story "Left Behind".

    Community Prize:
Unique in-game title: "Famous Writer". Won by Kurock last year.

Only one vote is allowed per person, regardless of the number of accounts he or she owns.

How the winners will be selected:
For the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Prizes, the winners will be selected by the Novaquark team. For the Community Prize, the community members will vote for their favorite fan fiction.
Last year saw very cool entries. If you want to discover them, you can download them all here.
    Good luck everyone!

    Cheers,
    The Novaquark Team.

    "
As part of the many steps this organisation has taken since its inception more than a year ago, we have finally narrowed our goals and vision to suit realism. Many of you are already aware of a few of the recent changes: the first of them was the rebranding from The Aether to the Heimera Trade Xchange. The name itself was not easy to come by, and the amount of stress the search for a single unique name can birth is not something a select few are willing to go through again...for the foreseeable future.

Secondly, the decision to join the Band of Outlaws (BOO) as a Special Interest Group (SIG) was more of a strategic decision than one made out of pure emotion. For a very long while, BOO has proven itself to be a stable and dynamic group. We have seen the recent changes in organisations, and drama - as always - has never been in short supply. Troublesome as they may be, we have known a substantial number of their members on an individual level - and they have proven themselves capable of quietly handling as much trouble as they loudly cause. In recent months, BOO has taken a more 'mature' turn even as they touch up their image as a gaming community, not mere pirates. We are immensely proud of our decision to join BOO and look towards a future of great gameplay, not only within the alliance but with the rest of Dual Universe.

Thirdly, we have changed our logo. We are very fond of the hexagons, that for a long while, were synonymous with the Aether via artworks and lore, but we have found that it is not fitting with the new image and aligned goals of the organisation. The hexagons are expected to surface from time to time in artworks and future lore. We might no longer be Aether purely in name, but we are still Aether within.

Certain members of the Dual Universe Community have expressed their concerns about the impact of our 'supposed' neutrality within an alliance like BOO. To be clear once and for all, 'neutrality' will do no one any good when their lands and houses are being ransacked by the enemy. We have seen Dual Universe mature with time and with that, the concept of neutrality without a big stick has become quite laughable. For us, we will operate by our means, and avoid trouble wherever we see it. At the same time, we will give our all to having a capable and true deterrent - with or without BOO.

TRANCE will remain neutral, as long as we can keep it so. We have received various expressions of good gesture and support from various organisations, all of which we are thankful for. However, stargates are still a long way off from being a major concern for any organisation keeping its internal capability and strategic environment in view. While we continue to add a little bit here and there to our concept of the stargates, we are open to working with credible and mature organisations to make TRANCE what it what meant to be: a tool for the Community.

Heimera Trade Xchange (HTX) is also on very friendly terms with ODY, and we hope to make an announcement by the weekend.

    Cheers, all.

Soarnir reacted to yamamushi in DUFM - Dual Universe Radio Online - Looking for Content Submissions and Recruiting Help
After a bit of a hiatus for -reasons- I am pressing forward with continuing the development of a Dual Universe specific online radio station.

This is being done under the banner of the in-game organization, "Alioth Broadcasting Corporation"

I am currently working with one other person making this a reality, and we currently have a radio stream running for demo purposes that has the following capabilities:

24/7 Broadcasting AutoDJ'd playlists  Scheduled DJ's (where DJ's can login during their assigned timeslots for live broadcasting) Real-time Album Art Retrieval
The general things one would expect from an online radio stream.

My wife, who is super awesome, is currently working on a website for people who want to listen live on the web as well. This should be ready within a few days, but ongoing modifications will be made to it to add features like album artwork refreshing in real-time and an interactive schedule for shows. I also plan on eventually adding archived shows automatically, though that may not be ready for some time.

All of that being said, the station is not ready for mass consumption, as we have several things we want to get in place before we give it out to the world. Which brings me to the purpose of this post.

We are currently looking for people who would like to contribute, more specifically the following:

#1 priority at the moment for me is finding an artist who would like to help make logos (for the website, as well as the mobile apps) We are taking submissions of all types of content, and anyone who has music/shows/podcasts/commercials/whatever is welcome to submit content that will be broadcast on the station. This includes recruitment advertisements from ANY organizations (must be safe for work).  We are taking applications for people who would be interested in dj'ing live on the station, this is not limited to music but also anyone who might want to run a talk show or anything along those lines. Again, any organizations are welcome to take part in this. If you want an hour-long show talking about your org every week, you are more than welcome to do so.

I am currently working on an iOS application (DUFM) that will make its way into the App store where you can listen to the station live on your iOS devices. In conjunction with this work, an Android application is also being developed. When both applications are ready for distribution, I will work on getting them into their respective app stores for downloading. They will remain 100% free forever. I estimate they should be ready for distribution before the end of the month, perhaps sooner if we can get the artwork squared away. Honestly, the only thing holding them back at the moment is artwork that needs to be created or modified.

All of this is being done for the community for free, I will not charge for publishing content, nor will I charge anyone to listen to the station ever. I won't accept donations for this either. The purpose of this isn't to make money, it's to bring audio content to the community. I would like for this to be a community-driven thing, hence anyone being allowed to submit content for broadcasting. I will not charge money (real or in-game) for ads being published on the station either. I'm not here to make a quick buck off people in any form.

If you're interested in submitting content, have questions, or are wanting to help out in any way, please contact me on discord @ http://discord.me/dualuniverse . I most likely will not be responding to replies on this thread.

Alternatively, applications for a spot on the schedule (talk show/dj) can be filled out here: https://goo.gl/forms/H3GIX9sJQH3f6r7n1

Technically, yes, it would be possible to have Dual Universe playable in single player mode or LAN multiplayer mode, given the appropriate amount of game development time.
However it won't be done because of the two following reasons:
    - because it's not the game vision.
    - because of game development time necessary to adapt the game to such configuration.

    That being said:
    - Nothing will prevent you to play "solo" if you're not interested in activities that could involve PvP (like building your base in a secure area).
    - If you don't like to pay a monthly subscription, there's a high chance to see a yearly subscription once the game will launch. While it makes total sense to prefer paying only once for a single player game or player-hosted server game (where you can invite your friends to join in multiplayer mode), it makes more sense to pay progressively for an online game managed by a company, as paying only once won't give you the same pros (and cons) of buying a single player game or a player-hosted server game: you won't own the game. you will own the right to play the game for a specific amount of time.
    - There was a lifetime subscription option for exactly one year (from the 7th September 2016 to the 7th September 2017). This was a limited reward to thank early backers for having given us their trust and backed the game to a such exceptional level.

Many people who like to play solo or just with a small group of friends see the current development of "games as a service" as an evil thing attempting to force them to change their way of playing. Nothing is more wrong:
    1) The number of available games enabling players to play solo or in small groups has never been so huge (a short glance at Steam will convince anyone at that).
    2) Seeing games released as services is not necessarily an attempt to force these people to pay more than before: it's just that these games are not meant for them. If they prefer to play solo and/or with a small group of friends, it's totally their right. However, they often forgot that not all players want the same thing, far from it: there are also many players wanting to play in a huge world/universe populated with many other players. MMORPGs (like Dual Universe) are meant for this second category of players, and from there, it's just a matter of financial viability:

Players want a huge world/universe with many other players (or even the whole community, in the case of Dual Universe) around them?
=>  as no player will have the hardware to host a server powerful enough, this is where it becomes necessary to have the hardware managed by the company developing the game.
=> such server will be expensive to maintain (hardware + staff behind it), and the cost will never end. Moreover, as many people will have different material, may encounter problems, due to a technical issue or a social issue with other groups of players (harassment, griefing, etc), it becomes necessary to get teams able to handle such situations (customer support, community managers). Moreover, as such games generally continue to evolve a lot after the release, to provide new features and new content (development team). All this can't just be paid once, with the wish that the game can live forever: if there are bills to pay at the end of each month, then the healthy to maintain the game is to have a subscription model.

Some will say "Yes, but there are a lot of MMORPGs free-to-play or buy-to-play".
Sure, but to be honest, it would be interesting to ask ourselves the following:
    - how many have lived for a very long time (10 years or more) with such model?
    - do those games have been beyond reproach regarding the three following points: permanent server availability, high quality customer support, regular content/feature updates?

Dual Universe has the ambition to be a game that will last a lot more than a few years, with regular updates. Obviously, the vision will not appeal to all types of players (as no game can appeal to all players) and or the service to have a decent quality, it needs to have a regular income, hence a monthly subscription, and no "this monetization model is obsolete" or "look how many went free-to-play" will change that fact.

    Best Regards,
    Nyzaltar.
