ATMLVE reacted to Vyz Ejstu in Intelligent Protection (The Aether Backstory Part 8)
    The Founding Fathers:
    Intelligent Protection

    They rode from the East,
    Blazing fires in their eyes.
    Behind the white beast,
The sound of a million cries.
    The Griffin charged forth,
    Leading the armies of Light.
    Deserts faced their wrath,
Fertile lands—the triumph of their might.

3 Acts of the Lambent Chapter 1:29. The Kalnian Books.

Five hours more or a lot worse could happen than me slaying every human in a ten-mile radius. On my “suggestion”, the Oethe Inc. flag had been lowered and placed as gravestone for the dead that fell from the sky. Eidolon could only glower and threaten as I casually threw his glittery toys into the mud and rain.

“You seem so willing to court Death. The wedding will be in no time, Oru.” Shiro noted as we walked in the forest while it drizzled slightly.

We enjoyed the musty spring smell, stepping over wet and slippery roots, soggy foliage, fallen trees and passing dead and budding stumps. Small trees swayed slightly with their leaves from side to side while the taller ones stood upright whispering and shaking their boughs and branches at whoever was beneath. The light, low drone of tiny droplets hitting leaves, wood and stone was an ambient sound track` on its own. The fierce, howling wind blew gusts of cold air through my shirt and trousers, tugging, pushing and blowing them wherever it wished. The grey sky overhead had lightened up a bit, but the different shades of grey that swirled and moved still looked heavy.

“I see no problem with that. Where you thinking of marrying him yourself?” Kuro asked from above, standing on a tree that moved and whispered as the wind passed messages through its leaves. All in all, the absence of any other voices and the ambient song of nature was all I needed to remain calm. But, my friends didn’t seem to notice that.
She winked at him, flinging a loaded shell with flawless motion. It hit him on the head and he barely caught himself from falling six feet low.

“He’s too much of an eccentric for me,” she looked at the time on her forearm. “to consider that option. We need to get you to sleep—fast.”

I gave a tired yawn, stroking Haiiro gently. A few minutes ago, Eidolon was as mad as a March hare when I offered to relegate him to a lesser role. The AI threatened me with loud and tedious talk while I used sarcasm to reply it and mostly to entertain myself. I don’t think it found the repartee funny.

“I’m moving Io out of the Defender’s position. Kurotou will do better there—for now at least.”

“I would like to believe that you’ve thought this through. But, I’ve known you for way too long. Your answer is:” Kuro mumbled waiting for me to finish.

    “No.”

He sighed and Shiro shook her head.

“Why do you always do things like this?”

    I pretended to think.

“Hm…Thinking is burdensome…I prefer living in the moment.”

“Perfect. You had one enemy, now you have three. Eidolon is going to hate you even more, Io will turn into a lava-spewing volcano, and Kurotou will be so hot at the thought of working under you and replacing his superior. The heat he produces will be enough to keep the whole planet warm for decades.”

I hushed Kuro and turned towards the camp.

“I’ll stop by Kilo. If that will make you feel better.”

“Believe me, it won’t.” Shiro shot back, casting a dark gaze on me before heading back to the Olympus Ariana.

“You know she has a point there. I have a feeling you’ll be using Haiiro a lot more within Olympus Ariana than outside it. No thanks to the Mad men.”

I sighed and nodded, yawning again.

    “I’ll catch you later, Kuro.”

He nodded and left, leaving me alone in the woodlands. I looked towards the plains in the west. There between two shrubs, Eidolon hovered. The AI was watching me.
Quarter an hour later, I found Kurotou with some guards.

    “What are you doing here?”

    Picking daisies for your mother.

“Picking daisi— “I barely stopped in time. The other guards looked amused.

“Do I look like a three-year-old girl to you, freak?” He asked, irritated at my presence, it seemed.

“I came to apologise for what I— “

    He cut me off.

“I don’t want your apology. Get out of my sight.”

I’m trying to be the good guy here, mate. Calm down.
    I swallowed and continued.

“You know, it’s not really a job, because there’s no stated rules for labour protection and transactions. If you could at least— “

He moved up to me and pointed his rifle at my chest. His comrades didn’t look bothered.

“You don’t seem to understand what it means to get out of someone’s sight, do you?”

This was one of the reasons I stayed away from most humans. Almost every conversation went south before or as soon as it got a compass.

    “I’m trying to apologise here!”

    He sneered at me.

“You can take that apology and stick it up your a— “

I sighed and slapped his gun away from me, bringing Haiiro to his head with my other hand. The other people moved a few steps backward.

“They think me to be an inconsequential person. Do you know what that means?”

I saw the cold sweat form on his face and gave an unconcerned smile. From his expression, I must have looked like the Grim Reaper.

“You are Lhaeryon now. The Defender and the Defence Department is no more. I’m replacing them with you.”

    He didn’t answer.

“It’s an offer. Take it, or leave it.”

Research has proven that holding a gun to someone’s head gives better results on average than asking with a candy in the hand.

    “I’ll take it.”

    I bowed slightly, lowering Haiiro.

“I look forward to working with you, Lhaeryon. Make sure you see me before the day is up.”

With that, I spun on my feet and headed to Kilo. I found the old man polishing some rifles in the armoury.

“Do you have some spare time, Kilo?”

He looked up through bright eyes.

“Not for you, Satoru. Except you’re going to help an old friend out here.”

I smiled and picked a rifle from a showcase, grabbing a spray container and a cloth from the adjacent aluminium rack.

“Compelling and old school as ever. There are machines to do this kind of thing.” I said, rubbing the barrel of the fire arm with the fabric.

“There are certain things a machine can never do as well as a human…Eidolon inclusive.”

Yawning, I gave him a low five.
    His smile faded.

“How long have you been awake?”

“I’ve got three more hours till I go crazy or find a way to dream.”

He placed a pristine gun back on the rack.

    “Still can’t sleep?”

“You know me. I like to show a little ginger when competition steps up.”

He cleaned his hands and laughed.

“Liar. You are more laid back than the ground.” He paused and looked into space.

“What else do you have to do?”

    I leaned against the wall.

    “You tell me.”

    He threw me a rifle.

“Eidolon’s got something planned. I hear the wind whispering secrets of a girl your age.”

“Hm.” I shrugged and cleaned the rifle.

“It doesn’t sound like a romance story to me, if it was, I’d know. I was a real ladies’ man at your age.”

“No. You were the pool wrecker and Knox Carter at bars. Remember how you broke a mahogany stool on the bartender’s head in Dortmund? Why did you stop fighting? I looked forward to meeting you at the bars back then.”

He took the rifle from me.

“It was getting expensive. And I’m an old man now. Why do you spend more time with old people than with your age mates, anyway?”

“Shiro says I’m willing to court Death. I’d better learn from those who are courting Her.”

His eyes grew wide with amusement.

“Well then. Let me tell you something since you want to know as much as we do. Appoint that new girl Eidolon’s waking as the Head of your intelligence department.”

“An enemy into a friend.” I noted.

He grinned and pushed me out of the door.

“Go on. Let’s see whether you’ll be as charming as I am.”

I walked towards the AI’s favourite section—the one that had a few humans that were still in cryo-sleep. The drizzle had stopped now, leaving the air moist and the environment wet. Kilo was very much different from most humans—the same went for old people in general. Unlike the younger adults, they had common sense and invaluable experience. Since Earth, Kilo remained one of the few people I could call a friend and I hoped it would remain like that forever.
Kurotou met me along the way.

“Listen, I don’t want to get off on the wrong foot here.”

    I kept quiet.

“But, it would really help if you could tell me what I’m supposed to do as Lhaeryon.”

I casually climbed to the top of the Eidolon’s Section, and waited for him to reach me. Nine minutes later, he came huffing and puffing while I sat calmly at the edge.
Once his fit of wheezing had subsided, I stood and pulled him to the edge. He stiffened immediately.
Holding Haiiro in my left hand, I pointed at the left and moved my arm over the right. Beyond and all around us was Olympus Ariana. The sunlight was piercing through the grey clouds, bringing wide and bright golden rays of light that shone down on us. Humans engaged in various activities, machinery hummed, Nightelves landed and took off, crafts patrolled the ground and the skies. White Sections stood tall, reflecting the glorious piercing rays, while zephyrs moved the air and added a nice chill to everything they touched.

“Protect us.” I said and looked him in the eye.

He kept his gaze on the scenery.

“That’s a lot to ask.” He whispered.

    “You think you’re inadequate?”

    The man kept quiet.

    “You are afraid?”

“The Mad men will attack us here. Petrovsky wants revenge. The Earldom of Mercia is sending delegates. Our scouts report unrest near the Ark ship. The drums of war are beating.”

“Let them beat. When the drummers are tired, they will sleep.”

His look felt like daggers were thrown at me.

“The Mad men are on the warpath. And so are we!”

“We’d best get off the war path then. Let the Mad men pass us. When they walk down the warpath and meet no one, they’ll get tired and rest. Or they’ll get on another path.” I said, yawning.

    Surprisingly, Kurotou smiled.

“You’re not half bad, freak. We might get along.”

“Even if I’m younger than you?”

“That doesn’t matter. Protect, yes? I’ll do it.”

“Good.” I said and climbed down.

“Figure out how to get down, Lhaeryon.” I said, delighting in his confused face.

I snuck into the Section, and searched the rooms. The unlit lights and dark halls made it obvious that there was no activity in here. From deep within I heard something hissing. Quickening my pace, I moved upstairs and searched the rooms. There was a quiet, inaudible exchange of words and it grew silent as I neared the source. Slowing to a walk, I opened the door. Sitting in a white dress was—without doubt—the girl Kilo talked about. Behind her, Eidolon hovered with a victorious air around it.
I looked at her and she didn’t lower her gaze. Something inside me shuddered at what it saw in her eyes.

“I’m Mistral. Eidolon has told me a lot about you.” She said enjoying my unease, and refusing to break eye contact.

I smiled, although I was pretty alarmed.

“Then you know my name. You are now Adhonys. Intelligence is your responsibility.”

Eidolon moved between us, cutting off our views of each other.

    “Will that be all, Satoru?”

    From behind him, Mistral giggled.

    “Satoru? You mean Oru.”

I failed to stifle a yawn, but my mind was racing so hard, I was sure they could hear it revving.

“Make sure you meet up with me when I wake up.” I said and stumbled out of the Section. A glance on my right forearm and I knew I had a little over two hours to find some sleep. I took a walk into the plains and laid down there.
    Hopefully, sleep would come now.

Indeed, they might be. But, it has already been stated by a lead developer that planet-destroying weapons will not be present in the game. While no doubt super awesome, such a weapon would be just too powerful, and would have too great a chance to ruin the game for other people. Imagine players pouring countless hours of time and effort into the creation of a planet covered in a few large cities, only to see the entire world obliterated by the Interstellar Legion of Trolls. It would be a huge deterrent to builders if their work could be rendered non-existent and irrecoverable in a single moment. Thus, the maximum power of weapons will be intentionally limited within the game, to ensure everyone stays equally happy.

While your ideas are certainly noteworthy, blueprint construction has been announced as being handled by a certain construction element. So the whole blueprint is constructed at once, in an element that's something like a drydock. By default, you will not be able to add anything to blueprint constructions, nor save them as your own blueprint.

ATMLVE reacted to Kurock in Questions on Kickstarter Early Bird pledge
These are answered in the FAQ at the bottom of the Kickstarter page at least partially.

    1) It is a physical real world card with your characters name on it. The name is also booked for you to use in game. The digital version does not book your name in game.

    2) Early bird specials are exactly the same as their non early bird counterparts except the early bird ones are cheaper.

    Welcome to DU

Note: I believe Kickstarter backers will get an (additional) name booking because the Kickstarter has reached over 6000 backers.

You got some cool ideas here. While this would of course take some time, I see no reason why this couldn't be added down the road. I know JC already said that the screens inside cockpits would be customizable, so maybe this wouldn't be far behind!

BOO:are keeping up with TU decently gslw=12
FS:are pretty much where they have been gslw=0

DU official youtube channel have been delivering videos astonishingly fast.
they delivered 3 new videos including: "voxel technology" and others.
We dont know why manny videos in such short periods, but its a good strategy to bring more people to the kickstarter.

    Kickstarter:

    tToday the have 371,000 euros.

ATMLVE got a reaction from Vyz Ejstu in Most Planets are Barren and have to be Terrarformed?
I think terraforming would be an awesome mechanic in the game. It could take a long time to complete, something like several months. And it wouldn't really have to be too scientifically accurate or reasonable either, just something to add a bit of fun to the game. It would definitely make a great community project! In my opinion, I think only a select few random planets should be terraformable, to make it so that every planet in the game isn't a potential garden world. That way, diversity of planets would remain, and it would allow for people to focus more heavily on the few candidates that have potential.

Awesome idea! Not a coder, so I don't know how complex or difficult this would be to implement. But still, it would make a great community project.

ATMLVE got a reaction from AccuNut in Gravity "element" suggestion
I always thought Space Engineers way of gravity was a little awkward, what with just a big box. If two ships of differing orientations but 1g downward gravity get close to each other, and the wells extend beyond the ships, then things get goofy for both ships. I personally would prefer a gravity generator placed on a ship to make gravity happen in a specific way according to the voxels on the ship, so that the gravity would extend a certain height above every single section of the ship, and not have gravity out in space in the ships vicinity. Then also available would be a way to have radial or spherical gravity, but it all would depend on the voxels connected to the generator, not merely the proximity of the generator.

So rather than a gravity generator having its own field, a gravity generator would cause each voxel the generator is connected to to have its own individual gravity field. This would make close fleet battles, something hopefully a significant factor in the game, less awkward in terms of gravity.

For something like cylindrical radial gravity, you could have the center be through the gravity generator, and then all voxels would have a gravity field away from that center line.

ATMLVE got a reaction from le_souriceau in Make Everything Difficult
There have been some topics around this area, particularly with building ships, but I feel that the this is a concept valid for the entire game. In a huge civilization-building, player-interactions-driven game, I feel that having people skilled in just certain areas will eventually lead to a more enjoyable experience for players. And this is something that many people may disagree with upon first hearing it, but find in the long run that they think it works really well. Or maybe they'll hate it! I want to share my opinion on it though, and I ask that those reading, who may think it's stupid, give it a chance. Also remember that there are two sides to this, neither are correct, and both are valid. It's just opinion based.

If anyone is familiar with the game series LittleBigPlanet, the first and second iterations for the PS3 played a huge role in a season of my life. They were the main games I played for months, and I had a friend who was into it as I was. Anyway if you don't know the game, it's not important. Basically, you use some basic tools to make little minigame-ish things (I'll refer to them as levels).

Anyway, in the first game, there were a few levels and creators that stood out significantly from all the rest, because they were fantastic (anyone that knows the name "Lockstitch" off the top of their head is a freaking awesome person). Me and my friend, we knew exactly what tools were available, and what you could and "couldn't" do. But some few levels stood out to us because, as people who knew the game inside and out, we had no clue how they some of these things were accomplished. A fair few levels were outstanding and amazing due to their mechanics and visuals.

When LittleBigPlanet 2 arrived, there were tons and tons of new tools added. These were fun and great to be sure, but they made everything that made the old levels special, not special. Because, all of the fantastic things that had been done before (in the first game) were now basic and easy because there were tools to do them (in the second game). This made a lot of great content a lot more common. Which of course was a good thing. And there were certainly levels that still pushed the boundaries. But overall, by making cool and unique things easy, it made great content a lot more common and thereby a lot less special.

If Dual Universe makes building easy, and mining easy, and combat easy, and exploration easy... Well, then there are going to be lots of amazing ships, and lots of miners, and lots of warriors and lots of explorers. You may say, "that sounds great!" But, remember my exceedingly dramatic and emotional story. When you make it easy, it stops being special.

In a game like Dual Universe, where player interactions and jobs and organizations are such a key factor, it shouldn't be easy to do anything. It shouldn't be easy to switch from a being an efficient miner working for a large corporation to a stupendous explorer finding rare resources on hostile worlds at the edge of the known galaxy. Sure, you can switch job titles and do whatever you want whenever you want, because it's a game! I'm just saying you shouldn't be able to switch from being outstanding at one thing, to suddenly outstanding at another. This allows individuals the opportunity to stand out, and be known for something. "Hey he's that guy that makes that line of super efficient yet powerful ships. I don't know how he comes up with that stuff." "What, you want to send Xx_M8_SLAYR_xX to go hunting for that anomaly? He's an architect, someone else will find it way sooner!" If someone wants to be known for something, then they go for that something and only that and they end up being great at it, and known for it. Lots of people will choose to not do this, which allows the few that do to stand out.

I can't really say much else that I haven't said already. I believe I've gotten my point across. Regarding designing ships or stations, it's easier to see how an individual could be better at it than most others. Mining or exploration expertise could be accomplished, not just by having better equipment or skills, but also by there being hidden techniques that people just have to learn by doing it. Thank you for reading and please try and be civil in your response, as, once again, both opinions are valid!

When everyone's special, no one is...
And if you're good at something, never do it for free!

ATMLVE reacted to NQ-Nyzaltar in How hard (or easy) will it be to earn DAC?
    Hi everyone!

We are aware there has been a very hot debate this week about the DACs being unlootable/not possible to steal from their owner. We apologize for the late reply (the Kickstarter campaign is something getting most of our time at the moment) and we thank you for your patience. We always try to find a compromise, an acceptable solution for different categories of players, without favorizing a specific one (because a sandbox game needs as much PvP players than non-PvP players). There has been a few misunderstandings and this thread is here to dissipate them. As we know many of you are passionate about the topic, there will be a few rules, to keep the thread clean and clear, easy to read:

    - No Meme. - Explain only in one post your point of view (and edit it if you want to add something). Of course this doesn't count for replying on further Novaquark posts in the thread. - No flaming, no provocation toward any other participant of the topic. If some these rules are broken, your post might be edited or removed without warning.
Apparently there has been some confusion/misunderstanding about what has been said on the Kickstarter page in the comments (it seems the misunderstanding comes from here). To the question: "Are DACs physical items?" the answer has been "No, the DACs are digital items". However, that was said in the sense "It's not a physical item in the real world". There have been so many occurrences about the opposite question regarding the "Arkship Passenger ID Card" being considered as a digital reward (while it was a physical reward, an item you get in the real world) that we apparently misunderstood the real sense of the question in the Kickstarter for the DACs.

So, to clarify: DACs are digital items in the sense there won't be any under physical form in the real world (like a prepaid card or something similar). However, they will be "physical" in the virtual world of Dual Universe in the sense that you will be able to move them from one inventory to another. It would make no sense if they weren't movable as it won't be possible to put them on the market.
This is one of the question that is still in discussion on the game design level: markets outside safezones, destructible or not? Possibly yes, but in that case, the way to handle unlootable DACs wasn't very appealing to the team (an item travelling through space to go back to its owner in case of the market destruction is a bit immersion breaking). However, there are several huge implications (and concerns) of having being markets destructible (and that's probably why it's not possible in EvE).
CaptainTwerkMotor sees the fact of "DAC being unlootable" as something making the DAC a "Pay-to-Win" weapon. We're not sure to understand how he came to this conclusion so we would like to hear his reasoning behind this. We hope he will answer to this question below in the thread.     You have a point in saying that some emergent gameplay would be missing. And you have also a point saying it could be acceptable to have DACs lootable if there was a 100% safe way to use them and/or transport them. So why something similar to the EVE redemption system hasn't been chosen right away?   The main reason was: game development time. Developing a solid secondary inventory system outside the game, tied to the account instead of a character, interconnected with the game and a payment portal at the same time, and all the ramifications that come with it... is something far from being trivial. It will take a significant amount of time to develop, to test and to be 100% sure the system is bug free. For the official release, the DAC system at the moment is supposed to be pretty simple: A player buy a DAC on the payment portal, he choose the character on which he want to drop the DAC and a moment later, the player can find the DAC in the character inventory.    As some of us in the Novaquark team are EvE Players, we witnessed the chaos that followed the introduction of the PLEXs in EVE. With our minimalistic system (at least for now), if the DACs were lootable, we expected to experience such chaos. So we opted for the DACs unlootable (unless there was a game breaking loophole). It seemed to us a quick and easy solution, quite similar to the EVE redemption system regarding the effects: as it was possible in EVE to transport PLEX in a secure way (keeping PLEX in the redemption system and dropping them only in safe, non-PvP areas like NPC space stations), we honestly didn't think it was such a big deal to have unlootable DACs. However, seeing it is for a large part of the community, we will aim to something similar to the Redemption system, as it still seem to us an acceptable compromise for every player profiles (even if it represents extra work). We can't promise it will be implemented at official release but we will do our best: CCP had a much larger team when they implemented the redemption system, and on our side, we have already a huge roadmap ahead for a team of our size. Moreover, it will be less painful (both for the community and the dev team) to start with unlootable DACs becoming lootable in the future, than the contrary.
There's something that needs to be very clear here: again, we didn't change anything immediately on a whim, just because some people had issues. We did it regarding our roadmap, and we honestly thought it wouldn't be a big issue for the community as it seemed to us there wouldn't be a big difference between unlootable DACs and an EvE-like redemption system. We still think the reaction has been disproportionate on the topic, but as a redemption system is still a good compromise for both PvP players and Non-PvP players, we are totally ok to go with that. It will just take more time to do it (and push back a bit some other features on the roadmap).   Loud voices without a well-reasoned opinion/feedback will never work. Loud voices won't influence the dev team decisions (we thought it was pretty clear with the Divine Reapers case on the forum)  Well-reasoned feedback (like the discussion here) can. That and game development time constraints.   Regarding Scamming: As long as it won't be a scam using a bug exploit, and have some way to be avoided by being a minimum careful and responsible, this will be up to the player (who supposed to be an adult) to not trust completely a person he just met. For all other cases, the Novaquark Team reserves the right to intervene: sandbox doesn't mean "letting the game turn into chaos". On a side note: Dual Universe is not meant for children. It has never been designed for them.    Regarding Griefing: Ambushing a player is part of the gameplay. Harassing some players repeatedly for any reason (be it vengeance, to make them leave the game, etc) is another thing. In this second case the Novaquark Team reserves the right to intervene: again, sandbox doesn't mean "letting the game turn into chaos".
You have a point here. And that's why there's a need to have 100% safe way to handle DACs, by making them unlootable or having a system as similar as possible as the EVE redemption system.
You made two good points here.
And the dev team takes this factors into account.

Credits will be immaterial and not lootable. Regarding character death, the current game design (it might change) is the following: When a character dies, it will loose all he has in his inventory. A part will be destroyed. The other part will be lootable.   Best regards,
    Nyzaltar.

I heard a whisper in the streets,
    "Destiny", it said to me.
Before me flashed man's greatest feats.
"Make your mark." It said to me.
    I saw the glory of the Earth;
    The beauty of Nature's breath.
And the life to which it gives birth.
    "Destiny--much more than wealth."

Right, we have something new to look at from NQ. I just noticed it on their twitter feed. Its not very long but we'll take anything we can get right.

    Enjoy.

The Aether is beyond the comprehension of us primitives that still linger about the world.

They've transcended beyond the mental capacity of most of us. To even be graced by their presence is above what we deserve.

Hm....Have you ever toyed with a peaceful python, dear sir? Or perhaps, provoked the ire of a resting bear? It is more likely though, that you've annoyed a sleeping canine or irritated a beast of the wild. These animals would rather leave you alone, than go out of their way to seek your harm. Nevertheless, disturb their peace and you will scarce find yourself alive, let alone, at peace. We are much smarter than animals at the Aether and so are you. We have no interest in war, but that will not stop us from protecting each other and fighting for our allies. All that shines must grow, or it will find itself dimmed by the darkness. Should we, as a family and a team, fail to protect ourselves and those who put their trust in us, we are of all Families and Teams the most miserable.
