I've played several WWII flight sims with multiplayer planes. What I've found is very few people wanted to fill the role of a gunner on B-17s. Everyone wants to be the pilot.

I dont see this changing in DU, unless the player is forced into a role they really dont want to play. If NQ decides to go this direction with the game, they will be fighting human nature.

This idea is that once you reach master level in your chosen profession you have the ability to give skill apprenticeships to players who don't already hold the skill. 1-5 apprenticeships depending on your training skill level.

(The below example can be scaled to all skills)
    Example:
Miner Apprenticeship Miner (20% skill speed increase) Master Miner
Basically you can still buy and train the standard skill or you can take an apprenticeship with a master for faster training. (maybe there is another skill that increases a masters training ability).

These speed increases are only applied when you complete jobs assigned to you by your trainer. (1 per day, lasts for one 1 day, repeatable until the skill is learned).

These skill apprenticeships have to be initiated in person i.e not something that can be done remotely via markets etc.

On completion the trainer gains training skill points (increased skill training time bonus or more trainees) and the trainee gains the skill at a reduced time.

    Pros:
    Player made tutorial
    Player interaction
    Catch up system

This is something that could be added after years full release.

I'm all for skepticism, because its the best way you avoid people getting all hyped, and then rage-quitting and writing a dozen negative reviews when things don't go according to their imagination. I'd much rather be pleasantly surprised by a game than disappointed.

So, in that spirit, let's be realistic here. DU is not going to launch with a thousand features and all kinds of super deep gameplay. That takes years and years to develop, and if you come into this expecting a game as deep and intricate as EVE or as filled with content as WoW, you're going to be disappointed.

But I'm totally fine with that, because I never played EVE for the gameplay, as weird as that sounds. I played EVE for the relationships and the conflicts, and neither of those things can be manufactured. All I ask of Novaquark is that we be given a game worth fighting over, and the stories will take care of themselves.

Hi Bleep_Bloop and welcome to our forum.

Not sure if this is the best way to introduce yourself in a positive way, but that's your choice.
We know our project is ambitious and we don't force anyone to believe the Novaquark team on words alone. We communicate as much as possible on the game development, we show what we can show. We do our best to avoid overpromising things (we stick to what seems to be technically feasible to us) and we try to be as transparent as possible in the development process, then it's up to the players to make their own opinion.

If you have a hard time to imagine how a game can contain many planets without being extremely unstable, keep in mind that the game world won't be hosted on just one single hardware server, but hosted on a server cluster.

    we suggest to look at:
    - This page on our website describing the "single shard" technology: http://www.dualthegame.com/technology
    - This devblog post: https://devblog.dualthegame.com/2014/09/26/a-single-shard-continuous-universe-one-world-no-boundaries/
    - This video explaining visually how the game world is splitted in real time across many servers to keep a global stability and handle the workload proportionally to the number of players gathering in specific areas:

After that, if you still have questions, feel free to ask.

    About Brian Fargo:
You might not like the games delivered by his studio (maybe they don't suit your tastes) but they have been successful and the numbers disagree with your opinion. The fact that you don't like them doesn't mean they are bad. Beside, it would make no sense to compare Wasteland 2/Torment: Tides of Numenera with Dual Universe as they are two completely different types of games (the first ones are rpg solo games with deep storyteling designed by developers in 3D isometric view, the other one is a Massively Multiplayer Online RPG Sandbox in first person view where the story is made by players).

    Best Regards,

They are and thats a good thing.NQ and JC have a specific vision for this game and an "old skool" philosophy towards MMO design. But a lot of play styles are represented in DU. DU has a lot of different things for different people.

Just copy/pasting other MMO's hasn't worked the past 15 years and it wont work tomorrow.

I dont know about you but I am tired of playing the same games year after year where everything is the same but the scenery.

    Of course you don't.
it's already there, a prefix does not define a game, at this point I don't think you have the capability to contemplate anything outside your box of hot air.
I don't care about Ark, I don't care about Eve.

It makes his "points" if you want to call them that, logically invalid, just because someone can string words into a sentence does not mean it's a plausible point, a refutation does not address the context, and repetition does not make something possess greater value, most of it is dribble, reminds me of a particular world leader atm.

I didn't refute myself, I've never said anything about a fully fledged single player game, that was the assumption you've all decided to go with, I'm not the OP, I stated my own simple concept, go see my 1st post here.
And yes answer A is already planned, which is what I was basically speaking about, making Twerks entire "argument" some sort of self-indulgent delusion, because he's said that it can't happen because of specific choices and referring to such yes/no/maybe decisions as proof but as you said, there is something going on, but we''re not allowed to speak of it because "it's an MMO, it's an MMO, it's an MMO"... it's ridiculous.

If you want him speaking for "the community" in the self-important fashion he does, where people can't even discuss theoretical possibilities without endless posts about 'it's an MMO, therefore it's an MMO' fine, but after looking around, I can see this has been going on for some time, so thanks for helping make the DU community a crappy place to come to for new ppl, I'm sure it will serve you well in the long run, the 3-4 of you that post on 98% of threads will have a wonderful forum together. I feel sorry for NQ.

The features that will be in the game can be clearly seen on the DU info page, I can see you have no regard for other ppl, and that in your mind your own inflated ego trumps all else.
A single player instance IS a quality of life improvement for many people, as much as you seem to think you are, or that you're trying to be, you're not the centre of attention here, your ideas are not the crux of opinions. Just because you have decided that you don't like or want a test instance does not mean it's meaningless to everyone else (yes a test instance, as I stated in my posts, something akin to the current tech demo area, which IS possible because it already exists), what is 'quality of life' is relative thanks, it's not your opinion in your apparent delusion of authority. it's actually posters like you that crap all over a forum and turn others off of being here with your nonsense and hyperbole. I've learnt this in 2-3 days... I mean Jesus you even have a twitter poll for it from August... that's some serious douchebaggery you've been committing.

You have all the tendencies of a narcissistic personality disorder, oh, you "proved" something by just stating the current concepts given by the developers and tossing in some "what, if, hows"... That's not how proof works kid. You think you speak for "the community", you seem to think you're the hero saving the forums from the masses when all you're doing is appearing pretentious and ridiculous given your fallacy laden statements.

All your "issues" are easy, they are not even issues they are details and options that could be utilised if you consider them outside your tiny box, the discussing of which hurts no one and is kind of the point of a forum existing...

Unlocking tech can be parallel with your MMO advancement, or not, it really does not matter because it affects nothing and most people will not be interested in a three planet area for long knowing they can enter the real universe. You seem to think this is a major issue for some reason, it's really not.
A subscription is a subscription I see no reason why a sub is not applied to the game as a whole, no1 is asking for anything free of charge.

And as for Lethys' third question: I would expect there not to be any NPCs, I would expect it to be a private offline segment of the game to text designs and concepts in that ultimately would work the same in the real universe.

I get the impression when you lot say SP, you're assuming the entire universe with NPCs a SP quest and all the other bits as is expected in Squadron 42 for SC, that was not what I stated at all.

Sure, but there is no problem having a discussion on it. I mean that's kind of the point of a forum.
Making suggestions and giving opinions (whether they would ever come true of not) then being told you don't understand what a single shard MMO is IMO just acting like a douche for the sake of being douche.
Getting close to just blocking such ppl so their eye-rolling drivel is no longer visible.

I'm sorry you feel that way. Trying to make a point and defend an idea against a bunch of people you do not know can be intimidating. If you look around, there are a lot of very lively and nuanced debates going on. However, some points are less open to interpretation as they have been specifically stated by the developers. For example, the developers have explicitly stated how the payment structure (subscription) will work. Sometimes people come along and suggest that the game should be free for various reasons, and sometimes they even manage to make one or two good points (among all the other bad ones). But whatever their argument, the point is irrelevant as the developers have spoken. And although the community's opinion is important, the developers get the final say. So too have they stated that this is an online-only game, and to suggest otherwise would be like suggesting that they make the Civilization series into a first person shooter or add machine guns to For Honor. That would just make it a different game entirely.

Plus, this game is made by a small company who currently have no source of revenue other than kickstarter and investors. All of their money must go to developing the game that they promised to make, not a separate singleplayer game. Perhaps they will work more on the lone wolf gameplay in the future, but for now a limited, online creative mode is all we are going to get. Personally, I think that is even perhaps too much towards singleplayer. I would be happy if they didn't include it in the game and made R&D into a resource intensive and worthwhile aspect of gameplay.

Kurosawa reacted to Anaximander in How would you refine resources before there are refineries?
    My guess :

The Nanoformer is the FutureSpace version of a swiss army knife. It can refine minor quantities / qualities of minerals, up to the point of you being able to deploy entry level machinery, like refineries. Then you have to use said machinery to deploy greater versions of those machinery, because you need to start refinining 1000 m3 of minerals at one cycle, instead of 30 m3 with a nanoformer.

I mean, it's a solid plan when you can shrink down trees and carry them in a nanopack. The nanoformer COULD work as an entry level multipurpose device, only limited by capacity and energy requirements.

    Cheers.

X3 was just one example, there are plenty other games using the same model for 3d movement, both single and multiplayer. It is the same layout used in countless games and will allow players to quickly pick it up, if you want to alter it down the road is something else.
The OP asked what the flight model and controls would be, my guess is it will be as close to the other games as possible by default and hopefully include rebindings and other control change methods.

It's going to be a long time before we will actually see functioning government like organisations in DU. I think these orgs like the TU are a probably going to fail pretty hard when they have recruited all these people to roles but don't yet have the material wealth to actually implement their plans.

The way I see thing happening is people coming together for mutual defense and trade, first just pooling resources to build a territory unit around a trade post, then some defenses and a milita force. As a "safe" area is established and faith in the leaders of the organisation is built then they might start renting out space to people which becomes the revenue stream for more formal types of police an military.

The idea that anyone will pay taxes is laughable, you can't force anyone to do anything so people will just leave unless you can offer them something in return.

Kurosawa reacted to NQ-Nyzaltar in Dealing with Griefers/Resource Depletion
Hi there,   Just a quick clarification about the safe zones:   The safe zones (and not only the one from the start) will be all 100% safe. This is one of the things that are non negotiable and this is a necessity for obvious reasons.   1) As the resources won't regenerate over time and with the community growing over the years, the Safe Zone from the start will not answer to the criteria Novaquark has in mind for the people who don't want to join the PvP. For many months, the communication has been "there will be zoneS for those not interested in PvP activities".    2) To help players spreading accross the galaxy, having safe relay point will be necessary. Why? you'll find the reasons below.   3) NPC space stations are the equivalent of Safe Zones 100% safe in EvE Online. You have NPC space stations everywhere in New Eden: HighSec, LowSec and NullSec. That's not a coincidence. It's an implicit protection from griefing. Without these NPC Stations, this would make trade absolutely impossible for freelance or small corporations outside highsec market hubs like Jita. Only huge alliances and/or coalitions that would roam in areas like the NullSec would survive: why trade with freelancers and small corporations when they can't find any safe haven in the nearest solar systems? It would be easier, faster and more lucrative to crush them with raw firepower then take what they want. Counting on the fact that big coalitions would have a reasonable approach of the problem would just be utopia.   @CaptainTwerkMotor:
Well then, I encourage you to read how war declaration mechanics work in EVE Online.
Wars start, last a few weeks or months and end, despite having safe zones everywhere.
Please, do not make such statement when the source you are referring to was just possible ideas, not even firmly confirmed.
There will be soon more information giving the clear differences between Safe Zones, Protection Bubbles and Shields in another topic.

Again, make the difference between what you would like and what is planned.
It was never planned to have a post-apocalyptic wasteland once you leave the Arkship Safe Zone.
There will be vast areas for PvP conflicts, large-scale battles and territory control. But there will be also many safe zones in order to give some space to the players not interested in PvP. Regarding the possible abuse of using Safe Zones to gain a PvP advantage, we have some ideas to discourage this, to make Safe Zones unappealing for PvP strategies. This topic will be developed later as well.

If it's not clear enough, Dual Universe has never been announced as a 100% PvP-oriented game.
The Arkship safe zone isn't meant to be just a newbie zone.

    Best regards,
    Nyzaltar.

This kind of thread has only one effect: to stir up drama in the community (even with a humorous tone).
Reminder: if you think there is a problem with a community member or a group, please contact one of the Community Managers in private (NQ-Nomad or myself) and we will handle the situation. It's not right for a member of the community to seek justice by starting a public thread.

This is not the first topic you started to blame publicly a person or a group of person for some reasons.
While there might be sometimes legitimate reasons, it's not your role here to "bring justice".

B ) Would you prefer JC Baillie to overhype the game without showing any pre-alpha proof of multiplayer? You want more Sean Murray perhaps? You miss being lied to I guess, cause that's what a meticulously crafted trailer is (I also guess you would know that if you were into marketing to begin with).

C ) I (and many others) praise them for not giving an F for "pretty footage". Three people built a ship, it flies, you can see pretty textures and a base layout.

I prefer the devs showing clumsy videos with what they already HAVE done, than ultra-edited hype fuel that oversell their game and will force them in a corner around release. If you want some Kool Aid in video form to justify your hype, that's your issue good sir, not the Devs' issue.

Kurosawa reacted to NQ-Nyzaltar in My Community Has Withdrawn Our Pledges
    Hi everyone,

As the topic is derivating seriously in the last pages, it's going to be closed.
To all those who are wondering if the current level of funding already include the pledge withdrawal, the answer is yes: The pledge amount is updated in real time. If someone unpledge, it's immediately reflected to the amount pledged on the Kickstarter page.

    @ChipPatton:

To sum up your point of view:
    1) Our communication is canned because we didn't reply directly to your community's experience.
    2) You didn't try to discuss with us because the previous reply was canned in your opinion.
    3) You said the PLEX is inefficient against goldfarming.
    4) You assume that I'm convinced DAC is the perfect too and that, apparently, only my opinion counts in the Novaquark Team.
    5) You consider that globally we are non-caring.

So to address this (very) subjective declaration:

    1) We read your community experience and we understand that your experience with PLEX hasn't been fun. However, just looking by the prism of one experience, and refusing to look at the bigger picture is something we can't do as game developers: The problem you encountered is something that you would have encountered sooner or later even without the PLEX existence. Why? If unfair players want to harass a specific group and they have money for it, yes, the official staff can close as many accounts as possible if those use gold farming sites to get a lot of in-game money, but the unfair players will come back again and again, as money is not a problem for them. This is a neverending story. As an EVE veteran player, you probably won't refute the fact that you can harass anyone with fresh new toons, only a few hours old, in Tech1 ships in EVE Online. Again, even without the PLEX/DAC system, the problem remains as a whole, only less visible. So what you consider as a "canned reply" is just a different opinion from yours.

    2) Avoiding to start a discussion just because we have a different opinion from yours, and that there are chances it wouldn't go your way... It has indeed no chance to convince the Novaquark Team. Self fulfilling Prophecy here. But you have no right to complain if you didn't even try.

    3) Three big developers/publishers seem to disagree: CCP, Blizzard and NCSoft (Carabine studios).
Beside that, as gamers, we didn't experience the consistent huge amount of PLEX/gold selling you're mentionning in EVE (Yes, we have EVE players in the team). Do you have something to back your declaration about PLEX system being inefficient beside your own words? If it's the case, we are interested in this data.

    4) The Community Manager status seems to have been misunderstood here: having a personal opinion and making the communication (both ways) between players and the Novaquark team are two different things. Whether or not I'm convinced of something is irrelevant in this case: If players have concerns about one aspect, I transmit the message to the team. If the team has an official stance on a topic, I transmit it to the players (the reason why you received twice globally the same answer). Now, while the team won't change a feature as important as the DAC system on a whim, if some solid concerns followed by facts are given in a well-argued discussion, everything is possible (except coming on what has been already promised to other players such as Kickstarter DACs). However, loud voices and threats of unpledging without solid reasons will not affect game design decisions.

    5) Just because we have a different opinion doesn't mean we are non-caring. We care about every opinion. However, we are also realistic about the fact that we cannot satisfy everyone. Nobody can.

If you have something else to discuss with us that are not:
    - Your (unfortunate) experience on EvE Online.
    - Assumptions of the real intents of the Novaquark Team (like implying the DAC system has been chosen by greediness, when the game is free, the expansions will be free and there will be a free trial period when starting the game... not really a good way to start a reasonable discussion with a developer).

Then by all means, send me a private message on this forum and I will transmit the message to the team for discussion.

    Best regards,
    Nyzaltar.
