Wolfram reacted to NQ-Wanderer in EXPORT YOUR BUILDS WITH THE MESH EXPORTER!
    Dear Noveans,

We're excited to announce that the mesh exporter for Dual Universe is now live!

This tool enables you to transform your Dual Universe creations into 3D files to save or print in 3D. You can then print your models directly or employ a 3D printing service of your choice. Please note, however, that models might require some adjustments post-export to be print-ready.

    HERE IS HOW IT WORKS:

The exporter is limited to core blueprints only. Access it via the Dual Universe website here. After logging in with your DU account, you'll find an inventory of your core blueprints, each accompanied by a "GENERATE" button. Clicking this button initiates the generation job, which you can monitor in the My Models column. Upon completion, a download button will appear, allowing you to download the .stl file.

To manage system load, we've implemented a quota system. Each user is allowed up to 5 pending jobs and a maximum of 50 total jobs per day.

Check out some examples of models already exported through this feature to see the possibilities for your prints:

    DU MESH EXPORTER FAQ

    Q. I don’t have a 3D printer, how can I get my construct printed?
    A. 3D printing has become quite popular, you can ask friends if they have a printer you can use for it or you can search for 3D printing companies to use for your exports.

    Q. I’m having trouble with printing out my construct, can you help?
    A. Due to the nature of constructs being very complex and designed differently, you may need to do some trial and error to get the print outs just as you would like them. We are not able to provide support for this.

    Q. I don’t want my construct to be printed by others, is it protected?
    A. You will only be able to export core blueprints that exist in your nanopack.

    Q. How do I export my constructs with the DU Mesh Exporter?
    A. Go to https://meshexporter.dualuniverse.game/ and you will be able to export your constructs from there. You must be signed into your account in order to export.

    Q. I’m new to 3D printing and I don’t really understand these files or what to do with them, what can I do?
    A. If you are not technical or new to 3D printing, it can be quite a learning curve. We recommend web searching and asking your fellow Noveans who may already know the ins and outs of 3D printing and what you need to do to get started.

    Have a great day, Noveans!

Wolfram got a reaction from RyanPryde in QoL Improvement: add container functions to the CoreUnit API
Basically, add a new set of functions similar to what we have today when we have a container or fuel tank directly connected to our board:
core.getContainerMaxVolumeById core.getContainerItemVolumeById core.getContainerItemMassById The idea would allow, for example, getting the volume and mass of a container or fuel tank without having it connected, just by specifying its id, and could improve A LOT the usability and performance of flight and factory management scripts, since instead of having to resort to using math to figure out what each fuel tank or container has, based on its mass, we could just have the exact values from start, without having them linked directly (important for larger ships).

    COMET'S CRAZY SLEIGH-BUS TOUR!

Join us Noveans! We've taken our bus turned sleigh turned into Comet the snowperson's play thing and we're going to do ONE CRAZY TOUR! Let's celebrate New Year's in style. Better buckle up and wear something warm, it looks like our sleigh might be missing a roof!

    When: Saturday, December 30th, 2023
    Time: 19:00 UTC
Tour duration: 3 hours (possibly 4)
Departs from: The Institutes (on Alioth - you can find it in the Points of Interest by using the 'M' key for the map)

We are also asking everyone to submit your favorite locations to visit! They can be your own territory, or those of your friends/org mates or even just really great places that you feel need to be shared with your fellow Noveans. Please use this form to submit your locations to visit.

Deadline to submit your favorite locations is December 28th, 2023. All places we stop by, whether a quick or longer visit will receive a gift. (It's tradition!)   (We will do our best to go to as many locations as possible, but please understand it might not be possible to include all locations submitted.)

You will be able to VR (more on that closer to the tour) and we highly recommend that you use the resurrection node on the sleigh as we cannot guarantee your safety. Make sure that your pack is empty just in case Comet goes a bit crazy.

There will be fireworks and a free gift on the sleigh, so even if you can't join us for the tour, you can pick up your free gift until Wednesday, January 3rd, 2024 at the Institutes.

Let's ring in the New Year on Comet's Crazy Sleigh-bus Tour Noveans! We hope to see you there!

The Creepy Constructs contest judging is now over and the results are in!

The folks here at Novaquark absolutely loved all the designs submitted. They went back and forth many times and finally all the results are in - and the creepy thing is, the two entries that got the most votes, also got the same amount of votes. It is my pleasure to tell you that instead having a tiebreaker, we've decided to give TWO Noveans the honor of receiving the first place prize!

Thank you everyone for participating and we'll be announcing another contest next week to get you in the winter vibe mood.  ❄️

If you haven't had a chance to see these creations in person, just head over to the Alioth Exchange and go outside of the red hall and have a look! Beware of at least one creepy crawler climbing up the side of an outpost though. 🕷️

OUR TWO ENTRIES TIED FOR FIRST PLACE ARE:

    Vylqun:

    Wossi86:

    Second Prize goes to SWERVIN:

    THIRD PRIZE GOES TO SEEKEROFHONJO:

A huge congratulations to everyone for such creativity and voxel work! The prizes will be distributed next week.

Wolfram got a reaction from Yoarii in An Advertisement for Dual Universe (updated)
Honestly, we don't need adverts for DU, at least not in the current stage. What is really needed is a way to retain players aka reasons for one to keep a sub and stay active. Without that, they can spend as much money as they have advertising the game and it will result in people leaving after the first months.

We need content, and by that I mean actual content. Having an ongoing lore event like we had for the PvE is cool and gives everyone an objective, adding new stuff to the game (even if that's just QoL) also helps a lot and gives a feeling that the game is being taken care of, even if there isn't a solid roadmap.

Taking care of the public image of the game is also another thing that helps, if the company actually listens and implements changes that are popular and well-received, there's a good chance players will recommend the game to others and the player base will grow organically, not to say that it also helps on retention. This is also important if they decide to advertise, since one might click the ad, but give up after reading too much negative stuff online.

Advertising works well for single purchase games, but for subscription stuff like DU, retention is king.

Welcome back! Lots of things changed from Alpha, specifically when it comes to how Industry works, so I would recommend trying out the tutorials, just head to any Market and look for the tutorial booth, it will reward you money and talents!

My personal advice is look for a group of players with similar interests and join them, things work much better in group, even if you don't work together on the same projects, you still can cooperate between each other.

Wolfram got a reaction from Castanietzsche in How would you have fixed DU ?
I like the concept of DU, the way things are mostly seamless, specially regarding to flight (atmospheric and space), they do have good tech, made by really talented people here.
The big mistake (that still happens), at least in my point of view, is that while the game was created with the intention of everything being player-made or player-driven, they still keep adding arbitrary limitations to the game, which goes completely against the sandbox concept (sometimes, even the concept of a game, which is being fun).

For example, limitations regarding what's allowed via scripting or building hurt quite a lot, but timers also hurt as well. Plus, some things that would have made the whole experience much nicer haven't been implemented until today.
Player markets could've been so nice, like, if we could add a Market Pod ourselves to a Container Hub and have a centralized place where we could add buy/sell orders in our construct, with that the number of districts and overall markets could be reduced per planet, which would give players a reason to make connections to get better offers. That's the kind of mechanic that is kind of implemented already, but is restricted and can't be implemented by players in any way. It gets even worse when we don't have reverse dispensers that buy stuff or don't have even the basic QoL to dispensers, which would be allowing to increase number of batch sizes at buy time...

The game idea is good, and I'm sure there's lots of talented people working on it, but sadly, whoever is in charge of making decisions doesn't seem to understand that for emergent gameplay to properly flourish you need to offer players freedom and tools for that...

Wolfram got a reaction from Koffye in PvE Missions: And the rewards go to...
So... Should we expect anything else from this? Maybe extra lore about the aliens and the Astrophage? What about the missing planets?

The PvE stuff was fun, good way to make some cash too, but the way the boss event happened was weird, everyone got coordinates to what seemed like an empty point in the world. Maybe next time give everyone an actual date/time? Maybe even send a newsletter inviting everyone to it or post on social media?

Anyways, it was nice to have something different to do in-game, good job on that.

I cant post this in the idea box as its disabled. I tried this game back in beta for about 3 hours, gave it another sub last year, took me 3 subs to ask in chat and find out theres a shuttle system to take me off planet, the game literally "opened up" to me after discovering this and that market 6 on alioth is the games "jita". It would be beneficial to the new players to learn about this via the tutorial.

It all depends if your account is eligible to have a territory on Sanctuary. However, even so, if you've just recently landed on Haven and really don't like the location you picked, definitely put in a support ticket to see if they can lend a hand in helping you change spots.

Wolfram reacted to NQ-Nyota in Congratulations on Successfully Completing the Astrophage Campaign!
From: Dr. Akina Eldon, Commanding Officer of the ASV Perseus, Flagship of the Janus Gate Taskforce
And: Admiral Magnus, Commanding Officer, ACV Orion (2-CVT-65)

    Announcement: The Astrophage Campaign

    To All Novean Mercenary Forces,

We stand today united as the guardians of Helios and the protectors of humanity. The struggle against the Astrophage is not behind us, but thanks to your unyielding bravery, the immediate threat has been contained. We've shown the enemy that we will not go quietly into the dark, we are here to stay, to grow, and to reclaim our place amongst the stars.

    Rewards & Recognition

In acknowledgment of your efforts in defending the Arkship Novark and the entire Helios system, Aphelia and Command have authorized a package of rewards for the most effective combat crews. You fought not just for yourselves but for the future of all Noveans. Therefore, a substantial Quanta bonus and high-tier shield elements will be deposited directly into the inventories of deserving combat crews.

However, valor isn't only measured in victories. We saw that many of you gave your all on the battlefield, time and again, but did not achieve the same combat success as your comrades. For your sacrifices, your efforts, Command will honor you as well with a special title to recognize your role in this pivotal moment in our history. We will forward details on the new titles to be awarded in a special communication.

    The Journey Ahead

Make no mistake, Noveans, this fight is far from over. But take this moment to celebrate your achievements and your survival. It's a testament to our resilience, and proof that united, we can face whatever the cosmos throws our way.

Remember, the key to our future lies in understanding the past—be it the secrets of the Janus Gate or the messages left by the Gate Builders. Our struggle is not just against the Astrophage, but also for the wisdom to navigate the perils and opportunities of Helios. Our scientists continue to delve into xenoarchaeological sites, and every bit of understanding we gain strengthens us.

Prepare for the challenges ahead, but for now, enjoy your well-deserved rewards. You've earned them. Keep your shields up and your spirits higher.

    In Unity, There is Strength.
    In Courage, There is Hope.
    In Victory, There is Survival.

    Onward, Noveans!

One schematic is enough to create one standard unit of product as listed in the base recipes found via the crafting interface (hotkey = K ). Industry units however have preset batch sizes whereby instead of allowing you to produce an individual standard unit of product they often require that you create several at once. This was done to improve game performance as it far less intensive to create say a 1000 screws every 1000 seconds, then it is to create 1 screw every single single second.

Since you mentioned it, lets take a look at the Square Light XS as an example. This is the base recipe as listed in the crafting interface and from it we can conclude 1 schematic will produce 1 light while also costing a single basic connector and basic power system.

Now if we look at the associated industry unit interface (in this case an assembler XS) we see that 6 are produced for every run and that each run takes 3 minutes. Thus you will need to have at least 6 schematics inside the schematic bank, one for each standard unit which is being produced.

Hopefully that helps. I know this question popped up a lot especially during the first few days after batches were introduced. If you have any suggestions on how to make it more obvious that would be really helpful.

Wolfram got a reaction from fiddlybits in How would you have fixed DU ?

@Zeddrick Well written arguments, nothing to add there.
One other thing NQ did and keeps on doing to make it impossible for players to have fun is limit really everything. Almost everything that was possible in alpha has gotten a limitation of some kind, and those in general did make the game worse.

In general if the players need to generate content but the content generated is costing you too much to keep on a crippled server the road forward is severely blocked.

Game got so boring there is actually no reason to log in, frankly i rather go to work and have fun with my co-workers

Get rid of Artificial Speed Limits. Makes the game boring to play -without alt-accounts. It’s hours of slow boating either to mission run, either to roid running. Slow boating is no activity. Besides VR a bit.

Ore distribution should me managed in regards of tiles. New players can’t find free t2+ tiles anymore.

PVP should have different mechanics for hunting and defence including engine or warp disruption. But the Speer limit is a joke.

DU needs more PVE content, better mission running, better looting with more interesting rewards, like skill books or skill points bonuses, etc. or discovery missions like if you explore a moon, a planet you can find something interesting.

introduction of life system, like food, energy, rest - could improve skill point rate for example, if your char has a cozy environment. Like in RUST.  Could make housing, interior and base building more interesting. Energy farms, food farms could be possible and interior would get a function.

There is A LOT that went wrong. But the fundamental problem has always been communication.

Here is what NQ said during the kickstarter.

But as we all know, this lasted only a short time before they went the complete other way and started to ignore the community instead.
And remember this was back when the community was under NDA restrictions and played with the sole purpose of testing and giving feedback on early game play no less!

And NQ was never able to receive constructive criticism. If you played the cheerleader and told NQ how great they where, they would interact and be all smiles and thumbs up. But any type of constructive criticism or legitimate concerns with the game design and it would be radio silence or at best some boilerplate  "don't worry guys" and "we know best" type of answer. And when things would boil over and the entire community would rage, we would get some "we hear you" type of deal with promises to do better. All promises that where broken over and over again..

And that is why the community turned toxic against NQ, and things are the way they are today.
And it is basic math really. When testers are telling you that things aren't working, but you ignore them and keep doing the same things. Then chances are that you will fail.

So for me, there were all sorts of small failures along the way (many in beta, some since) but they are all really just details next to the central problem.  One of the key features of the design for DU was that players would provide *all of the content*.  That meant that the game just needed to provide the mechanics and frameworks and literally everything else would be player driven.

Now players did actually try to do this.  There were people who created puzzles, etc for people to solve, created factions who fought each other, tried to build whole cities and many other interesting things.  The game and its developers seem to fight against content creators at every turn - recent examples being ship builders being put off because the stacked element checker means they have no way to know whether or not they are selling ships which will error 6 months later and warring factions being put off because nobody can shoot each other in battles.

Putting that aside though, I think that the one thing this game has proved beyond all doubt is that a game with solely player built content does not work.  You need to have some other content created by the game itself first in order to create gameplay loops that players can do when they aren't doing any group content.  A player needs to be able to just log in, play for 1/2 an hour, enjoy that time and profit from it.

So the one thing I would have done right away is add some background life to the game.  Put creatures in that might attack the player, make some basic challenges on the ground and in space, give players something to shoot at and reasons for doing so (protect base, get resources, whatever).  That would also give them a reason to team up, live in walled villages or space stations with a large shield, etc.  Some of this was in the original game design videos which were put out.  Then I would have built on it by adding more of a survival element to the game, adding PvE and NPCs to allow players to make their spaces more interesting.  I can build a huge space station but it has nobody in it at the moment, let me make it more interesting, make a bar where NPCs come and players I let in might be able to get missions from those NPCs.  I think that would have given players much more of a sense of shared purpose and struggle and a reason to come together into groups and play together.

As it is the game is, frankly, boring.  It's a game relying on player created content which literally deletes player created content on a regular basis made by a company which has no problem with breaking existing content and blaming that on the players trying to create it.  The world itself, and the constructs the game allows you to create, are fairly static and uninteresting too and it is difficult to come up with actual functions for many of the rooms in a construct.  I can add a bed but it has no use.  A lot of the cool stuff I see is just huge empty shell buildings with one or two rooms because people made them to look pretty rather than because they needed the space for things.
