It's the name of the Man in the Moon

"There was a man lived in the moon, lived in the moon, lived in the moon,
There was a man lived in the moon,
And his name was Aiken Drum.

    Chorus
And he played upon a ladle, a ladle, a ladle,
And he played upon a ladle,
and his name was Aiken Drum.

And his hat was made of good cream cheese, of good cream cheese, of good cream cheese,
And his hat was made of good cream cheese,
And his name was Aiken Drum.

And his coat was made of good roast beef, of good roast beef, of good roast beef,
And his coat was made of good roast beef,
And his name was Aiken Drum.

And his buttons made of penny loaves, of penny loaves, of penny loaves,
And his buttons made of penny loaves,
And his name was Aiken Drum.

And his waistcoat was made of crust pies, of crust pies, of crust pies,
And his waistcoat was made of crust pies,
And his name was Aiken Drum.

And his breeches made of haggis bags, of haggis bags, of haggis bags,
And his breeches made of haggis bags,
And his name was Aiken Drum."

I demand the first moonbase be named Aiken. And that moonbases first drinking establishment be called the Drum

Aiken Drum. My fave Julien May character because of the classic nursery rhyme he got the name from.

Before waking up the thousands of the Alpha team, surely one would need to check that the system is working as intended with a single test subject. A few times.

No characters in the story are in any way related or based on characters outside the story, real or imaginary.

This is a short story of around 5200 words  At this time the placeholders for UMF are still in. These were never removed.

    Enjoy.

    ----First Paragraph Snippet----

Space.  Contrary to popular belief back on Earth, stars do not move as you travel through space. Well they do, but the changes are imperceptible to the naked eye. And they don’t twinkle. Everyone I cared about I left back on Earth. Now Earth is destroyed, by some nova star and them along with it. Staring out into the void echos the void inside me. It is the loneliest I have ever felt. And then a space whale drifts by.   --------------------------------------

Edit v1.1: Uploaded again with minor typo fixed as pointed out by Lethys.  UMF is still in the document. Otherwise no changes.
Edit: No doc changes, just here to say UMF remains in the story and won't be changed Edit: File was 0kb for some reason.  Re-uploaded for everyones enjoyment.

Dead on I'd say. Yes DU will have some lore to work with, but everything else is in player hands. Naturally players will just act like this because it's the only way to act when playing. Fortunately, it's a sandbox, and those who want to take it a step further can. That said, don't be surprised when you get steam rolled by another group because you focus on roleplay over practicality. It just is what it is.

    Hi guys,

Just out of curiousity, how much do you guys think people will roleplay?

Will it be commonplace? Or do you think it will be more along the lines of games like Eve where there is a small part of the playerbase that actively roleplays while the majority of the playerbase then steamrolls over them going "omglol j00 suck!" ?

Looking at the different recruitment posts I think there may be a fair amount of roleplay going on in the universe of DU.

A couple of things to note:

All dates are from official lore and previously written short story already established as lore.

Just as in the lore, I have included brackets in the story to frame all references to names that may change (i.e. UMF)

In this story, somewhere around the end of the 21st century, shortly after the “Rebirth” program was implemented by the [uMF], the Gregorian calendar was replaced with a calendar based on seasons, known as the cycle calendar.
The new calendar was implemented partially to promote the Rebirth program (Rebirth Day!), but also to assist those involved in the project, in the hopes that when/if they arrive on another world, they have some kind of calendar/dating system that they are familiar with and is easily adaptable to the new planet. (i.e. a seasonal calendar)

On Earth each cycle has roughly 91 days and correspond loosely to the following months/seasons:

-Rebirth Day = The 1st day of the year in the cycle calendar and is always on the Spring Equinox
-First Cycle = March, April, May (Spring)
-Second Cycle = June, July, August (Summer)
-Cycle Day (also jokingly known as Recycle) = The Autumnal Equinox
-Third Cycle = Sept, Oct, Nov (Fall)
-Fourth Cycle = Dec, Jan, Feb (Winter)

Cycle dates are often referenced as the 40th day of Cycle1, 2536 (or 40C1, 2536.)

I HOPE YOU ENJOY THE STORY!

"A good idea, but it will have to be created by players, not Dual Universe. All in all, it will provide a good chance for shipbuilders and craft builders to showcase their creations and allow for a good get-together. Brilliant idea! Let's hear what the others have to say."

Just thought I'll throw in a call out to anyone who plays in my timezone - which is as above in title (UTC +12). Any Kiwis, Aussies, people living in Japan or Americans working the night shift here - who are looking for other people to play with? Not sure if there's any organisations already in existence in this timezone - and don't know if I want to start one without getting a feel for the game itself, but it's probably time to start putting some feelers out either way.

So yeah, too early to talk about creating corps / orgs / whatever, but here's an open invitation to hop onto my TS3 server (equilibrium.instantts.net) - no strings attached - just to hang out with people keen on DU outside the all popular American timezone and see what happens

Naming is the origin of all particular things.

Free from desire, you realize the mystery.
Caught in desire, you see only the manifestations.

Yet mystery and manifestations arise from the same source.
    This source is called darkness.

    Darkness within darkness.
    The gateway to all understanding.

Without the Hill, there is no King

The King exists only because the Hill does.

    1. Either the humans have been genetically engineered, their suits compensate for the environment, or it is simply a conveniently earth-like atmosphere. Regardless, it's a game, gotta have fun.
    2. I don't think resurrection nodes and cryo pods are the same thing. Resurrection nodes revive you if you die. Cryo pods freeze you so that your body can last for thousands of years.

    3. Not sure what that's from but the galaxy is 100,000 light years across. At instantaneous acceleration, relativity aside, it would take 100,000 years to cross the galaxy if you were travelling at light speed (relativity considered, thats an infinite amount of time for the ship). The Arkships are of course simply going from one point in the galaxy to another, but nevertheless 24 years at 1g would not get you far. In any case, the kyrium that the Arkships are built out of can absorb excessive accelerations.

Edit: quick calculation yields 24 years at 1g gets you about 300 light years, or about 0.3% of the way across the galaxy.

Yes - plenty of time to pick an Organisation.

Prospecting is the right word (for exploring and locating minerals).

So you are a Möbeltischler? (Actually I bet there is an exact translation for your trade in English - we have all specialisations and certifications (certainly in Australia), same as Germany).

After stalking this Side for weeks and hoping the crowd founding continous, i just joined the founders today and wanted to say Hello to all of you and leave a short introduction even i'm tired as hell from work.

So....Hello Guys and Girls i am looking forward to share this game with you guys.

I am a woodworker or carpenter or cabinet maker ( there is no good translation for this job from german to english )...and yeah i like to spend my free time like my time at work...crafting and building.

I'm a huge fan of sandbox/crafting games and mostly i play the part of "the dude who organizes the stuff we need" in our little gaming group.
I also like prospecting ( i hope thats the right english word) and farming the right materials.
You can say i'm a team player, if i can help you out i would. If there's a fight i won't run.
I just hope i can find my role in DU and i hope i'm still excited about DU in a year or two as i am now.

    Thx for reading,
a good evening to all of you.

I only just noticed your reply (sorry). If we get the tools to do this... Wow! The possibilities.... Fleet Management System? Black Market? Automated Trade Routes? Call For Reinforcements?

I hope we not only have some form of "networking" ability, but also some form of storage (perhaps a set amount of data stored on a DPU, accessible by code). But i may just be getting carried away... Fingers crossed hey

If elements can communicate with each other remotely, ie satellite dishes or something to that effect, I would like someone to attempt to create a blockchain network using LUA within Dual Universe.

LUA 5.2 has the ability to run SHA256 functions, and with a networking component.... well you get the idea.

Time will. In the end a lot also depends on whatever city authority or faction there may be - so far I still consider this rough idea to be something that adds to a city and not something that runs it. Like in reality, where police may enforce laws and to some extend suggest them or suggest changes (the higher layers), they are not responsible for coming up with laws in the end.

We may give suggestions and we'll roughly try to align interests and whatnot (e.g. we currently do not really intend to support some cliché hardcore Empire going full police state) but in the end the fine details will be up for those who manage the city.

It could even be theoretically possible that they do not really outlaw anything specific - thus fighting 'smugglers' would not be necessary - no one (there anyway) would be considered a smuggler or someone doing illegal things with certain goods then, such as transporting them. Even if laws would be rather "liberal", I can still see a few good uses for a project like this.

After all, even if they have little to do in day-to-day operations, they'd be an additional defense layer for the city if it ever gets attacked by some hostile foreign power. In addition they could still cover minor policing tasks - if traffic problems won't be a thing they could still be like forum mods if there are disputes. Or they boot out those who disturb the public peace in a major notable way somehow.

But this is still far in the future. How it ends up will depend on two things I assume.

    1) Who is willing to incorporate this idea into a larger urban area and what level of enforcement is aimed for?
    2) Will the game allow this?
