it again comes down to communication -- it'd be nice to know why nothing has been done in development in the last few months.

The new trees/rock assets were purchased from a third party, so really it's just jetpacks and org wallets, which seems like a couple weeks of work, not months.

so...where has the rest of the time gone, exactly...?

have they invested the dev time into refactors and bug fixes so they can finally have a stable core that they can build on and maintain...? this is a 6+ year old codebase -- it isn't like code magically gets better as it gets older and bigger -- i'd 100% support spending the time to refactor and improve stability / maintainability...but honestly?

sounds like the devs are simply phoning it in.

    From their own NL:
"heating up...?" so why does this update read like it would be 2-3 weeks (at most) of work from any other studio...? Does NQ expect that updating their biomes from 1999 visuals to 2010 visuals will completely revitalize the game?

TBH, i feel like NQ's devs mostly sit around and collect their checks.

Why should they be motivated to go the extra mile...? i've suspected bad dev morale for a long time and the high turnover, poor reviews around job sites, and complete lack of real progress supports that theory.

I expect management is too scared that devs will leave to crack the whip. Not like you can just plug a new dev into a 6-year-old codebase working with an engine no one in the industry uses.

sprinkle in work from home, crunch time, and less people needing to do more work and you have very unmotivated devs that always seem to find a valid engineering reason why things don't get done.

i don't blame devs for bad management, don't get me wrong -- slow dev is a symptom of a more fundamental issue...if NQ really want to release this year, 0.25 must be literally game-changing.

    Hello,

What about having a possibility to export our ship as OBJ file.

There is a lot of application with that:
we could include that to DU Creator so customer could see the ship in 3D. we could 3d print etc...
What do you think about that?

The launcher is a bit big but overall a huge improvement  The lighting changes are good and planets look better overall.   Mission system was good although I would love to be able to make more than one mission a a time.  10 or 12 minimum.  The org wallet is good but we could have some more functionality in it like giving daily limits on what members can withdraw or use.    Warping between planets i saw some more lag than usual and may result in players with lower bandwidth getting crashes
Some things to consider in the future test servers
    1.  seed the markets with very low cost stuff in the test server so we can try things easier
    2.  no talent points make is hard to test things  you may want to allot some for us to assign in the future
    3. you can further reduce lag ion ships by giving us XL atmo engines and L wings as the computers don't have to do as many calculations for fewer elements.   This will make ship designers very happy as the backs of ships wont have to be a huge flat surface.

PTS starts with the live server database from a month ago.
If you started playing earlier than a month ago, you won't start from scratch.
The dev team may also give free resources when necessary, to test on a specific topic (more info in the official announcement below)

    @Filokwarq2
PTS is currently opened and should stay open until tomorrow.
This is however a first load test, so the duration may be short for the first time and it will reopen later.

In my opinion  its not just about the economy.   For me the game is just not fun anymore and there is no reason to play.  It is too expensive to build, mining is not worth the time except for the diehard folks and the risk of flying ships is too huge.   With such a small amount of money coming in the risk vs reward is way off.

    Hello Noveans,

December is halfway over, meaning the arrival of the new year is tantalizingly close! 2021 is sure to usher in some big changes, and we couldn’t be more excited to experience those with you. ?

While we were rolling out 0.23.1, we noticed that players who had talents in training lost what was accumulated during our downtime. So, in the spirit of bringing out the old and ringing in the new we would like to offer everyone 1 million talent points (~1 week’s worth) to not only replace lost points, but also as a bit of a holiday gift! Build, explore and be merry!

Thank you for your continued support. We sincerely hope that you and yours enjoy a restful holiday season!

    Sincerely,
    The Novaquark Team

    Agreed...

If you crash, you still have to spend ages repairing the ship.. a lot of crashes (not all, but a proportion) are still caused by janky framerates, lags and (in my case yesterday losing a life on two L adjusters!) an uncontrollable spin due to high school level control programming whereby, if your computer skips a frame or two just as you let go the key, the LUA adjuster-stop-function subroutine that is supposed to return the adjuster level to 0 is never called and you end up offset from zero permanently...

Also remember that in a collision, damage is applied ONLY to the elements regardless of how many voxels you have. You think you can protect your elements with a thick shield of voxels or embed them... LOOOOOL Nope... Impact damage completely disregards and skips the voxels and jumps from element to element based on distance from impact until all the damage is absorbed... potentially with enough damage transmitted from component to component to completely destroy all elements on your ship regardless of intervening concrete/titanium.... gold...

Clip the wingtip of an XS core ship at 150kph into another XS ship sitting on a landing pad: no biggie... Clip a stationary abandoned started speeder with an  M wing of your 10kT superfreighter at 150kph and boom: enough damage to destroy the wing AND transmit the remaining damage to surrounding components. And the little XS ship just sits there giving you the middle finger. ...

You can bump into a single floaty voxel that renders as your ship is passing (either just in front or even effectively inside it if your ship is larger) and if it's a 1kT beast it will be completely destroyed if travelling at >100kph (28 mps)... that's what all the complaints are about on the forums due to players building single voxel towers to cater to the broken-ass mechanics of AGG ships. Now add to that permanent death AND schematics to rebuild and you end up with complete, undaulterated bullshit.

So to cut a long story... well,  not at all.... I am 100% a proponent of rolling back crash damage on impacts until their flight and damage mechanics are CAST IRON level done and tested.

    This first bit!!! 100%

You put a lot of effort into the post and it is interesting.  I think its a bit narrow though.  With regards to energy, you seem to be focusing on a very small part of human history (maybe 200 years).  It is conceivable and definitely possible that all energy production could be free within the lifetime of many on the planet.  The fossil fuel industry is doing their best to stop that happening.  Before energy was a thing, the big money was in food production.

At this point I don't even want to play amore. I am sure others are the same as me.  When I log in and there is all the barriers to everything!  I cant even afford to fly anything but a speeder because my ship blew up after landing too near a speeder.   There will have to be something significant done to get all of the subs back.

Most players have lost faith in the devs because there is no guarantee you wont do something even worse next time.     The reaction should have been immediate reverting the game to its original state.  I just fear its too late    This is such a shame because it "was" the best game I had ever played.

The community team was able to collect and present your thoughts to the rest of the NQ which ultimately led to this evening's write-up from JC.

Even if you're not 100% satisfied with the changes we're making to 0.23, I hope that this at least demonstrates that we do indeed read, digest and execute on your valuable questions, concerns and suggestions.

I got into DU because I was tired of Eve and wanted something new and different, now it seems NQ is just copying EVE without looking at the pitfalls. Learn from EVE's mistakes (They have been trying hard to undo historical mistakes they have made after a lot of people have left the game)

Schematics is not so bad as I get the fact that super factories is an issue however saying that the current way it was implemented is completely killing the game.

They should have just given one schematic of each up to tier 3 for everyone to do basic building and still produce some elements to sell on the market to buy more schematics and steadily build up small factories.

This would still have killed the super factories. Now only Orgs with deep pockets will be making money leaving simple folk out of the game. Basically the rich will get richer.

There are so many other basic issues that needs to be fixed and new player are not just leaving because of content but performance issues.

Anyway my 2 cent's will join back in a couple of months hoping things have changed for the better

That's what really annoys me - whenever people defend it as a change that was needed for the long term health of the game....

It's nonsense. In the long term everyone who ever wanted to do industry will have ground enough to have all the schematics. All that was added was the time sink to get them. You can still do the same thing you could before. Now you just have to grind a lot first - but a year from now we'll be back to where we started. Same mega factories. Just a whole lot of time wasted to get them running again.

This patch did nothing but add way more tedious grinding to a game that was already mostly tedious grinding. This should have been obvious to the devs. It was obvious to the players who left this feedback - https://dualuniverse.featureupvote.com/suggestions/122819/recipes-as-items-industry-balancing  and yet it got pushed out anyway....

Look, the majority of your player base does not like this patch. and you should be more than aware of it. There were things that could have been done, things that have been suggested on here a multitude of times in the past. This patch... despite your Discord Q&A, and all of your live streams, all it showed us is that you simply did not listen to your player base, or their ideas. We are the beta testers, and we have given our feedback on so many, if not all of the currently available  aspects, and tools of the game which could increase the enjoyability for everyone.

your testers are leaving. I've seen several people  cancel their subscription, myself included. My sub ends on JAN 11 2021, and from how things are looking, I do not think Ill be resubbing after that date. However it isn't too late. There are other updates which could fix this, patches that can draw DU's community back to the game. After watching your discord, the forums, and talking to so many other players from in game, and on other discord servers. I think I can summarize the changes needed which could bring some the faith back to DU's community.

1: SCHEMATICS: Now I want to say this first. Schematics are not inherently bad, however the way it has been implemented is the biggest problem we have here. It was implemented to bring value to intermediate parts, and to suck money out of the world. You want to have players buy them off of the market. you want the market to be used, correct? There were better ways to handle this problem.

Schematics can stay, but not for everything. By placing them on absolutely every item that we can produced through a factory unit, you have effectively placed a ransomware on your own game. We cant do anything anymore without forking over absurd amounts of cash to get access to the game. This is not a model for any level of play. New comer's will be turned away from this, and more experienced players will simply give up on the game, which they have done.

Basic Items of all types should be free of schematics. Doing this allows everyone to at least experience the core  aspects of DU. we can build, fly around and explore. DU can feel like a game again, and not a second virtual job.

Schematics can be on everything else. Military engines, advanced, or uncommon parts, advanced weapons. Everything that isn't tier 1 should have a schematic in order to give your player base a goal, a reason to want to improve, to invest time into DU. (but maybe release tier 1 weapons as civilian weapons that need T1 and T2 ores only.  just so that newbies can get the feel of how combat works in this game, yea?)

2:RECYCLERS AND SCRAP: recyclers are sitting In a weird spot, right? they only have 2 uses. To make scrap, and to pump out gasses. These two simple jobs makes recyclers relatively useless in the grander scheme of the game when compared to all of the other industry elements. What if they didn't have to be? what if they could be redesigned to be one of the most important industrial units in the game, and provide a way to fuel the economy in way we currently cannot reproduce on our own through emergent gameplay? What if.... they could... Recycle?

Scrap as it stands now was an OK Method to repair our elements in the earlier days of this game. but those days are long gone, and you need a reason for the market to exist, you need a reason for people to sell small parts, intermediate parts on these markets! Ok. We can do that, and recyclers are the answer. Allow recyclers to break down elements, and damaged elements with less that 3, or 5 repairs left. Allow the amount of "lives" of an element determine how many intermediate components a recycler can pull out of any particular element. Allow it to be random in which parts are chosen. For example, if you recycle one space engine, you get the ionic chamber, and a few screws. If you recycle a second one, you could get the reinforced frame, and a burner or two. It could also produce scrap still!  Scrap can come in the form of a useless item that needs to be further broken down to remake pure metals. But wait. what will we use to repair our elements if  scrap becomes useless? INTERMEDIATE PARTS!

look at Space engineers for inspiration. we use components to repair their broken blocks. You do not need to equip the parts you need, the welding tool simply pulls the correct parts out of your inventory, and applies them to the damaged block until it is repaired! Its simple, its elegant, and immersive. Doing this creates not only an actual engineering role for crew members, but it creates salvagers, recycling plants dedicated to breaking down old parts. It creates jobs in DU that people can take their roll in, and  enjoy. This can be even furthered with skills to make recyclers more efficient at pulling out parts, and breaking down elements faster.

Intermediate  parts will be in high demand  on the markets after this because they are NEEDED to repair elements as opposed to scrap.

PS: make cores repairable with intermediate parts too. larger dynamic cores are already hard to make, having the ability to restore them with the rare parts they require would be a nice thing to have.

As an example I was watching one of the You Tube creators going in to a market place purchasing anything they needed with almost a full backpack of schematics they still had over 545 MILLION quanta left after purchasing 6 schematics for warp cells. This guys org is not that big either, so all you just did was make the rich much richer. Curse you DEVS!!!!!!!  I had spent 8-12 hours a day (retired) playing this game with a small organization and you just wiped us out literally.  Curse you DEVS!!!!!!   I cant even create a small factory to make containers as the schematics needed would cost me over 100 million to purchase, to be able to possibly get back to a point where the game is playable without having to mine 24/7. CURSE YOU DEVS!!!!!!!  I am sure many other players are feeling the same thing, that they want to play your game as it was or at least a REASONABLE facsimile of what we played before as now the grind is not worth the reward, no where near it!!! That is how games like World of Warcraft and even Eve made if for so long was that even though it was a grind it was worth the tie spent, now this game is NOT EVEN CLOSE.  You think that by the time you release this that people will still be playing, Im afraid not, you will ONLY have the gigantic orgs left and no one in between. No middle class whatsover, but I guess you guys are used to that. And then once the game is fully released you will have the overlords of the game that will rule everything in the game, and no place for newly formed orgs to survive!!!!
