    Dear Noveans,

We’d like to take a moment to talk about the communication on the forums and in Discord. We appreciate the passion each of you bring to our community and don’t want to diminish it; however, we’ve seen an increase in negativity, specifically attacks, unconstructive complaints, and disrespect to fellow players and our team. This is not okay.

We’ve always invited community members to speak their minds. We’d like to remind everyone that we require a certain level of decorum and respect. Participants in our community areas (forums, Discord, and our social media accounts) are expected to voice criticism and concern constructively and communicate with courtesy and respect.

This is a warning that we won’t tolerate attacks on staff, volunteers, or members of this community. If you can’t play nice, and with respect, then this isn’t the community for you.

NQ-Naerais got a reaction from MuadDib in Update to our community
This week we will be making some visible changes across the community areas of Dual Universe. While this is primarily affecting our forums, some changes to the community in general are included:

Forum restructuring and clean up EULA and Code of Conduct updates Additional improvements on the way Enforcement
    Bored Boards:
The forums will be getting an overhaul over the next couple of weeks including the reduction and closure of some of the less active forum areas as well as an amalgamation of some of the remaining ones. This should help new and returning members of the community find the information they seek more quickly. We will be relocating some rarely-used sections into a read- only archive.

In addition, we will be cleaning up the sea of pinned posts. We may have developed a pinning addiction in the past, we’re ready to move on from that now.

We realize changing a community layout can feel overwhelming and chaotic, we are hoping to reduce the clutter and make it easier to get what you’re looking for faster! This isn’t the only plan we’re working on, but more on that later.

We will also be reopening the moderator application in the coming weeks. If you’ve ever wanted to get your mod on, this will be the time to apply.

The Legal Stuff (EULA and Code of Conduct):
We have updated sections of the EULA and Code of Conduct to make it clear that we will not tolerate real money trading (RMT) within Dual Universe. Please take a few moments to review the changes.

    Idea Box (forum):
We know there have been some recent concerns specific to this forum and we would like to address them.

First up, and most importantly, we want to thank everyone who has posted in the Idea Box. You have provided our team with hours of entertainment, amazing suggestions and wonderful creativity; however, we have heard a rising number of complaints about not seeing those ideas manifest within the game. We assure you that every idea is read, but not every idea can be implemented. And remember that game development takes time. A lot of time.

Because we have so many ideas coming at us from the Idea Box, the UpVote page and more, we would like to remind and reassure you that our team is currently focused on the existing game plan and updating it to make sure that the performance is solid and that the game is fun to play. As we’ve said in recent blogs, you may not see a lot of obvious changes frequently, but we are hard at work behind the scenes.

We are going to restrict the Idea Box for the immediate future to feedback regarding the existing game loops and elements only. This is not to say we won’t look outside of that, but at this time we have a backlog of content and ideas and need to focus on the existing mechanics. Once we've cleared the backlog, we'll be in a better position to consider suggestions.

    Enforcement:
Now that the adaptation period of post-alpha and post-NDA lift is behind us, we are going to put more emphasis on the enforcement of our policies and tighten the consequences for people violating them. We are doing that in the spirit of continuing to build a welcoming and tolerant community of players.

Until then, thank you for your patience and patronage.

NQ-Naerais reacted to Cheith in Any progress since the dev blog dump?
I find it amusing listening to some of this as I do write software for fairly large systems for a living. Changing the fundamentals of a large, complex piece of software (which DU undoubtedly is) is not a trivial exercise. There will be at least 100s of thousand of lines of code in there and who knows how many components. Quick change, especially to core elements, does not happen - at least not without breaking a lot of things which will then just lead to more complaining.

Assuming this is a smallish team - after all the Kickstarter raised a relatively small amount of money - then they will have manpower issues focusing on new features and stability at the same time. Too little money, too few people. Think about what SC has burned through after its crazy money raising - and frankly this project is no less complex than SC, the focus is just different.

To be honest I think the expectations raised on this forum about turn around time for new features and fixing issues are completely and utterly unrealistic. While people are, of course, entitled to their opinions I don't see much sense talked here when it comes to development.

Comparing the development to Starbase is also crazy - Frozenbyte is a much larger more well established company (130 employees). Starbase has also supposedly been around for 7 years - but likely with more money and more people.

A lot of people are upset (or laughing) that the mission system hasn’t arrived on live yet. A quick question, of those people have any of you tried it out on PTS and thought to yourself this is ready to go live?

When there is a mess up which advantages one group for a while, like the duplicates, or the cheap schematics everybody is in a huge uproar. Maybe they have listened to us and are trying to not enter such a big game changer until it is closer to right?

its a hard  decision making a fair cut for anyone

in my formula we have old players, new players and Novaquark

    new players:
.. have a big disadvantage especially after the 0.23 schematic change
they need a smooth start equally to the early days for the now "old players" to stay&play and have enough motivation to continue and grow..

    old players:
have spend a lot of time
they are high potential customers for the future - they possibly cant be replaced by new players (its just a guess)

    Novaquark:
needs to balance server load in a way that its also working in future - concerning server expenses and its resulting performance for the players

My proposal is to implement a energy contingent per player.
A player can adjust his contingent between his own productions and the corporation (if he's part of one).

Production lines may slow down in a negative exponential way if there is too much running - making it very insufficient.
That way a bigger corporation is probably interested to buy components like screw and tubes and other T1/T2 products from the market to run their high-end productions at full speed – instead of producing all them self in a serial way.

Server load could benefit a lot that way and it can help to establish a running market for anyone.

New players should start on Sanctuary.
They as well have this energy contingent, but they can produce anything without schematics up to T2 – they can not sell their products (those are flagged accordingly) on the market though - because its only meant to help them into the game and learn all the things to grow and establish properly before they go to another place for heavy production or contribution to a corporation.

A wipe will affect the "old players" hardly and there's a big risk they quit – that’s a dangerous thing for anyone who wants the game to success in the long term because NQ simply needs the cash to continue. "New players" need a sandbox without too much restrictions. Its a good learning to visit a moon for ore and feed the factory for their needed things on Sanctuary. If they want to step forward they'll have to grind, like the "old players", to get the schematics and all other fancy stuff.

There are some other questions like PVP. But I'm the wrong person to find out how to make this a good thing for anyone.

    @NQ
I hope you'll do some intense brainstorm to find a good solution to help yourself, but also the new and the old players to keep /make them happy. I love the game. But personally, I wont start from scratch once again.

NQ-Naerais reacted to Hagbard in Cross section calculation .. or how to fly faster..
    Flying Faster with less
    or
...Dual Universe and the cross section calculation

I quite enjoy building small efficient atmo flyers (you probably know the Hagboard)
The key to the fun factor of these little ships is keeping the Frontal Cross section as low as possible. For the Hagboard it is usually 0.38 which is the smallest value that is possible if you still want to have the comfort of a hover engine on your construct.
But since some months, DU is not making it easy for these little ships. There is a bad bug with the cross section calculation which usually leads to a wrong (higher) calculation of the frontal cross section.
You can easily see the problem by entering build mode and having a look at your max speed & frontal cross section. In most cases you first see lower speeds and a higher cross section, and after some additional seconds this value changes to the "real" values.
So the frontal cross section is supposed to be the total surface of the ship when looking from the front. This should be a static value, but due to the bug, we get 2 separate values.
Even worse: when starting a flight DU usually takes the "worse" value to calculate the flight physics.
I assume that the first "bad" calculation is done on the client side, and the second "real" values somehow come either from the server or using some values being loaded fro the server.
As sometimes the server is slow, we get into a situation where the "better" values might even never get loaded to the client.
As well during flight, DU re-calculates this values. So even if we manage to start a flight with the "better" values, we might get faster speed & Acceleration at first, but after some control movements DU usually falls back to the slow values.
There is 1 trick how you can do a test flight and "force" DU into the faster values.. give this a try:
    1. place your construct flight ready, pointing towards a wide open area ( e.g. a big water surface)
    2. enter build mode and look at your max speed / frontal cross section
    3. wait for the max Speed & Cross section to be displayed with the "better" values
    4. exit build mode and directly activate the seat/remote controller
    5. give full throttle, avoid steering and try to stay between 100 and 300 m...
By following these steps you should be able to do a flight with the "full potential" of your construct.
Another possibility to increase the speed of your construct is to remove ALL Honeycomb from it. The cross section calculation only fails if there is at least 1 honeycomb voxel on your construct. so without them, it should always use the "better" values.
i have 2 tickets around this topic open now for 1-2 months, but obviously NQ has more important things  to fix right now. But as i get asked multiple times a day, i thought it would be easier to give the explanation here so i could point people to it ?

    Have fun flying,

    Hagbard

While we wait for shields in game as NQ suggests is in the works, I think it would be very valuable to have an element to produce a radar jamming aspect to your ship. Element size based on core size or element count. Kind of like a IR masking.
I think while pvp exploits are in the rise, this should help people avoid contact with pvp situations at least until a shield makes it into the game.
I for one am sick if lose ships to exploits and nothing you can do about it expect pay a fortune for warp cells.
