While Apoapsis and Periapsis won't have their true meaning in DU I truly believe they should name those points that way (and perhaps lagrange points too) just for immersions sake.
I don't know how those procedurally generated systems are calculated and if it is known beforehand how that system looks like (maybe someone more capable than me can elaborate on this) - so some "entry points" would be nice to have. Be it either a probe which has to scan the system beforehand, or some points in space (apo- and periapsis, lagrange points) or even the rim of a new system to start your exploration.

(EDIT 30.05.17: Further development on the original proposal is suspended, as there were no players willing to join this kind of organization... But for reference I will not remove anything said in the original post)
(EDIT 28.12.17: After joining ODY, I'd still like to promote the core idea of this proposal. My new goal is to create separate standalone open-source-projects which are loosely inspired by AI, just without the whole organization idea. Players will be able to repurpose these programs for their own use. I only wish for my programs to assist players in their everyday DU activities. For more information refere to the new project list at the end of this post.)

    ================================================== Original Post ===================================================

    Greetings,
Dual Universe is the perfect setting for a little social experiment. I love boundless sandbox games, like this one, as they really promote creative gameplay.

An often reoccurring theme in science fiction is the dream of a perfect society...
I strongly believe that the only way to get closer to that vision is to create an artificial intelligence especially dedicated to take all important governmental decisions of a society. All mistakes that happen in a society because of human errors could be prevented!
So what would be better opportunity to test this statement, than to actually play around with this idea in a game? Nothing can go wrong here!
As you might've guessed this is an organization proposal, even though I don't have a name yet. I think a sort of research institute would be quite fitting.
But this can be decided later by vote of the members. The name is actually not that important.

Most important is how the AI is actually going to work. The ultimate goal is that the decisions of the AI are as reasonable as the decisions a human leader makes. Luckily DU is still quite limited (relative to reality) according to the possible decisions an organization can make. Therefore only simple programs are needed to get to the "right" decisions.
Also important to note is that the purpose is not to micromanage everything the player does, but to only give high level supervision like a real government. So the players will still have private ownership and private sub-organizations e.g. a security service.

    How it works
I've already set up a core framework for the AI based on a Discord Chatbot written in Python 3.5. A direct integration into DU will probably be very difficult as external programs are often used for cheating, and I hope NQ is well secured against this.
However some abstract information of the game given through Discord are all that's necessary to make reasonable decisions.

The easiest tasks for decision making are reactive decisions. In most cases there is only one correct reaction to a problem, which can be programmed by simple if/else statements.

In the following picture I've tried to visualize how several aspects of the game could be handled by the AI: (sorry for the plain appearance, it's only a placeholder which will be replaced with the actual features of the AI)

These are only some examples that came to my mind, and not necessarily the most important ones!

What I'm really eager to see is how the AI will manage more vague decision processes, e.g. who is a trustworthy ally and who not (like indicated in the 1st picture). This will no longer only be an If/Else decision. The AI will need to adapt its decisions based on previous experience (so called "reinforcement learning"). Therefore I integrated the machine learning library "tensorflow" which is basically the brain behind all Google AI projects. They actually just open sourced it last year! This library is probably a little overpowered for the current tasks, but I'm sure we will use it more in the future!

On the economic side the AI will automatically create jobs based on the needs of the organization and pay for every accomplished task.
Another important factor would be the spatial awareness and building functionalities. Buildings and infrastructure should be build using predefined blueprints and functionalities, so the AI knows exactly what infrastructure is available. To keep the program simple everything in the world is reduced to an object-type (e.g. city/ mine/ military outpost) which has specific attributes (e.g. storage capacity/ defense turrets/ position).
Each of this information has to be kept up-to-date by the players.

    Security Issues
And in here lies a weak spot of this system. Our enemies and griefers will probably try to harm the AI by feeding it false-information, and thereby causing false reactions. So only trusted Members should have access to change critical information... However this will turn to a more and more time consuming task, as the overall information in DU continues to grow. Hopefully we'll find an alternative solution for this in the future.

The decisions regarding the further progress of this project will be made by the programmers which are participating in the development of the AI. We could form a sort of democratic "Coders Council" in game, which will also decide on matters where AI is not able to make meaningful decisions. However the AI will always be the official leader of this organization, also for roleplaying purposes.

    Lore
Apropos roleplay: I created a little backstory that would fit quite well to the great DU lore. (read here: https://devblog.dualthegame.com/2016/11/16/official-lore-bible/ )

"During the anti-AI-riots in the year 2145 there were still people who supported the sentient AIs. A group of scientists thought the fear of AI was only caused by human ignorance of their thought-structure. Certainly the phenomenal advancements of the AIs were scary, and made them seem acting strange, but only because the humans could not catch up with their development.
During that time it was too late to stop this overhasty destruction of all AI. The scientists had to go underground and swear to rebuild AI, but this time without letting their mental abilities run out of control. They tried to hide forbidden AI technology, but the [UMF] soon discovered their hideouts and purged every bit of knowledge that was left. The whole mankind was under continuous oppression by the [UMF], right until the Great Exodus.

But even though all technology was lost, the idea survived. A few scientists of the secret society decided to found a research institute on Alioth dedicated to rebuild an AI from scratch. This time they would be more cautious. Even though they admire Aphelia as she is the only (proto) AI on Alioth, they also fear her because she might be programmed by the [UMF] to make sure the colonists will follow the AI ban that is officially still in place on Alioth." (to be continued)

    Development Participation
This stuff has probably never been done before, so it's very likely that it might not work out as planned.
But if you like to develop your own AI, or you'd like to see a leader who is online 24/7    you should join us!
It's also no problem if you are already member of another organization. I uploaded the AI on GitHub as open source project, so you can use it for your own organization as well. I welcome everyone who is willing to contribute to the project:
    https://github.com/CyberCrunch/DU_AI_Gov

I skipped a lot of details of the development, so if you want to know more feel free to contact me. Maybe it would be helpful to even open a new thread on this forum exclusively for the programming part.
I'm probably more into programming than into the actual playing, but I'm sure there are some like minded coders/engineers who would also like to see this happen!

I invite everyone to test out the AI on this public test server. Currently most functions are still placeholders, but you can try to do some Smalltalk with the AI.
The first thing that actually works is you can register yourself to its database, and the AI will remember you when the game launches.
Link removed!  (discord-bot has been shut down)

I've got the feeling this is already getting to long, so I'll try to update this section further while the project continues.

First of all, I want to say hello to everyone. I were lurkering the forum since I backed the kickstarter, but due to lack of time and inspiration (and a bit of shame to be honest) I never did it. I have some ideas to play the game in my own way (ofcourse with some people at my side) And recently I ended to watch/read everything at devblog and read some points to guide my ideas (looking at you @lethys, @captaintwerkmotor and your emergent gameplay)   Well, after this short introduction of myself I will show you my ORG the Unnamed warehouse safe depot.   Unnamed Warehouse (UW)   Our primary goal is to provide the galaxy with storage facilities, meaning that we will have a depot to everyone who needs one, ORGs or individuals. This warehouse will work more like safe deposit boxs. I know many users may think, why would we use this kind of service when we can build a pretty saffer depot in the starting/ark safe zone? the answer was easy to me in 3 points: discreetness, privacy and logistics.     We will protect the identity of our customer the same way we will protect the nature of what we were ensuring:  - We don't care about who are you, you want a depot so we offer you one. You pay it, then you get it.  - We don't care about what are you going to store in. And we don't want to know it.  - We are planning to be the safest place in the game.   While you are paying we will grant the next services:  - Privacy, Meaning that we can schedule you visit to never be viewed by others.  - We offer you private docks to your cargoship  - You will have an individual depot-room where you will enter alone.  - The security of your things may vary depending on how much you pay, where we offer diferent security acces (i.e. you do not need to pay the uber security when you are only saving your recently mined resources, or accumulatting for a merchant fleet or a major cargo ship)  - We offer a dock to exchange currency and goods between ORGs in a neutral and safe zone.   Once we grow enough, we plan to expand the services in the way of offering logistics to transport cargos and safety rooms where you could have secret meetings in a high security place.   ________________________   I only want to add some things before the end:   I am actually open to have some partners (help! I can't do it alone!) but due to the nature of this business I think we will be only a few running the ORG, but hiring a lot of people to keep the secure thing, including in that part members from others ORGs or outlaws/bounty hunters. We will keep neutral, and we need a nice spot to be a really usefull warehouse, so we need to be in contact with the others ORGs . If this grow big enough you will have news from me. I expect to be able to run kind of safe box via DRMS and a huge number of automatic weapons pointing at your head, I really hope loads of rare and precious shit were stored at my facilities and loads of "pirates" would dream about surpass our defenses...so any feedback would be very appreciated

    What is Vanguard?

Vanguard is a private mercenary corporation that holds diversity, community, and teamwork in the highest regard. Unlike simple soldiers or bodyguards who are designed to follow orders, members of Vanguard are recognized and treated as individuals working in teams. No member is simply an asset, each is unique in their desires and aspirations. While Vanguard the corporation accepts contracting requests, whether or not most requests are accepted is determined by the Vanguard teams and their members.

    Organizational Structure:
The ranking system of Vanguard was designed with simplicity in mind. This was part of a conscious effort to eliminate possible confusion regarding power and status within the company. At the highest level, a Platoon Leader and their assistant(s) oversee four different Squads. Each Squad has a squad leader and assistant squad leader overseeing the members.

Typically, a vanguard member comes to see their squad members as their family within Dual Universe.

    Is Vanguard for You?
With members spread globally, the Vanguard maintains a constant presence within the universe. As a part of this ubiquitous Vanguard, you will never be truly alone. You will always have a home, and a respectable amount of freedom to pursue your interests while not on an active mission.

Individuals who share our ideals, are willing to take on a wide range of assignments, and be a part of a larger family are highly encouraged to apply to Vanguard.

    Base of Operations:
Vanguard plans on operating out of a battle carrier named the Invictus. We aim for her to be a testament to our ability and a beacon of strength for the Vanguard.
Apart from the Invictus, another separate, grounded home base will exist for members to carry out their own personal projects in safety and peace.

That would be a good solution. If you put the invite on the forums, it should be considered "public" and added to the directory. Otherwise, it should be considered private or unlisted.

DarkTemplar reacted to Warden in Where would you like to go?
In my book it should be simple: If you have your discord in your recruitment threads, expect them to be considered public unless there was a clear context or message that would indicate otherwise, but then again it should perhaps not be part of the recruitment thread with a link.

So if all the data was collected from open (recruitment) threads, I see no problem. If not, future data should be collected and added here according to (recruitment) threads anyone can view as it's basically public knowledge then - or could be.

This makes it easy for all - you can assume orgs give auto-consent if their links are public. You as the one creating the list don't have to get back to individual ones and ask "Can I add this to the list, please?", or, in turn, don't have to deal with the occasional "OMG REMOVE IT AT ONCE, POST-HASTE!" messages.

Thus I basically consider using public info in the list by default as the easiest way.

E: Recruitment threads are just an example. "Public knowledge" could also relate to messages posted in chat where someone advertises their organization on a broad level while sharing Discord servers. Same outcome, really. You get the point, ladies and gentlemen.

Title because I live in Australia and we're currently in the middle of the longest hottest heatwave we've had for a long time, I'm sure death is imminent... I can't say I'm optimistic about my enjoyment of it for a few more days, particularly as my birthday (7th) is the mourning day for 2 historic bushfires which killed hundreds of people... but enough about how I hope Justin Bieber will leave this world.

Me: Carnage (Carn)... I've recently also been called 'Carnitas' by my super funny clan mates... I've been told it means 'little meat' in Mexican/Spanish... To quote an unnamed leader of the NWO on the size of things: "I guarantee you there's no problem. I guarantee.".

I'm head of a small clan who started in a now dead game called Firefall where we had at one stage about 110 members, well FF died due to... lets called them 'poor development decisions' and we moved onto Ark: Survival Evolved. After some unmentionable chaos in that game (as fun as it was), we moved onto Warframe, mostly staying as a core group of about 10 members, but picking up people along our journey and losing some others. Ultimately we are waiting on Star Citizen as a clan, but we play a lot of other games while we wait.

I'm the type of player to be dedicated to a primary game for a number of years, I like reaching an endgame type situation, then refining my skills at that level, I played UT2K4 for about 5 years so I'm very much into FPS games, but I often find myself spending my gaming hours building within a game or outside it. I've made a few Skyrim mods in the past and Am quite intrigued by possibilities of DU, I could see it being my creative outlet as opposed to the more serious nature of Star Citizen.

I also study Microbiology and Genetics, which are the main other parts of my life, so I'll likely have an aura of scientific scrutiny on some of my future posts...

I'll watch this game, try and contribute, and possibly get my core clan mates interested, but we'll need to see how alpha/betas go before I nail down a more long-term investment than the iron pledge.

    Cheers.
