If they have 20 accounts, it means they bought 4 Alpha or Beta accounts to get the 5 extra beta access keys. That's at least $240 they paid towards funding a game that is likely to go titsup at any moment.

moreover, they have to log into each of those accounts at least twice to do the missions... that's anywhere up to 3 minutes per account to log out and back in... twice...
lets call it 3 minutes per relog... 40 times... that's 120 minutes of sheer boredom plus travel time.  If they are willing to "play" that way then they will be the type of people that will tend to get rich anyway...

if they are willing to do a hideously boring thing 20 times, they are welcome to it... I have more money than I can reasonably spend anyway and earned it all on one account by making ships and things.. (though I have 4 other accounts that just log in to apply their handling skills to industry/ships).

Your "warnings" are pretty meaningless since it is dead easy to poke holes in your baseless fantasy bubble ideas.

If I'd choose to do so, there is _nothing_ preventing me from blocking part of a website to be show on my screen, I am not altering or even accessing any of the code, I'm just not allowing it to be shown. But feel free to provide me with anything, outside of what seem to be a misguided sense of what is or is not legal, that says otherwise.

You are either missing or trying to sidestep the issue here.
Claiming that modifying web pages on the browser client may be problematic and possible even illegal, is such an absurd statement that is was bound to cause people to react.

As long as this is done client side, there is no legal argument here period. We are not breaking into and compromising the NQ servers in any way. We are just choosing how much of the web data sent from NQ we want to use. It is no different from putting a post-it note on the screen to cover up something you don't want to see.

are you trying to suggest that you could be fined or go to prison for blocking parts of websites?

There are no laws against blocking content on the internet that I am aware of in any English speaking countries.

but it’s likely that we are feeling their servers starting to strain under untenable load from all the digging that people have done.

that is why finally... after years of people explaining to NQ the flawed nature of their ridiculously pointless-and-redundant planetary voxel persistence model (or alternatively: stupidly believing that NQ had really HAD invented some never-before-seen data storage and retrieval methods) their 100% verbose dig record-keeping has come back to bite them in the arse.

it might also be likely that they just can’t afford the bandwidth/processing capacity any longer given they are down to just a dozen or so still-paying customers, ? and have turned down the auto spool-up rate/ max number limit on their virtual servers.

I don’t get this mining trauma thing. I haven’t mined for the better part of a year. I build stuff… people buy it.
    I get cash.

but mining is stupidly inefficient with server and voxel data. Single use voxel data should NEVER exist in a shared universe of potentially thousands of people… and 99% of all mining tunnels (pulling that number straight from my arse, I will admit)  are going to be single use.

    what an absolute fustercluck.
Now if they get culling correct (that’s the term for not rendering what isn’t seen) then they can actually just shift that data onto near-line storage and be done with it.

but if for some reason superfluous data is being read time and time again, we’ll then they have a problem on their hands.

they could also use P2P ala bittorrent to reduce server load.

There was a running gag here and on discord about DU being a "small indie studio please be gentle" for a long time when the game first went to open beta.  Every time people got angrier the phrase got weirder.
"We are small indie studio, please be patient"
"We are small family restaurant, please be patient"

I’m generally OS agnostic and run a multitude of OSes at my business place but I do find that each OS is more suited to different tasks.

For me, though, Macs are for work, including design, photo and vid editing and programming  my PCs are game boxes and run my VR headsets. Of course, all my server and storage needs are built and run on Linux.

I couldn’t imagine changing it or losing any of them.
    No windows? No VR.
    No Macs? Relearning everything again.
No SE Linux? Have to use a more insecure and heavy OS to manage my storage and websites. Eww.

I would never try to do AAA gaming on a Mac or Linux.

nor would I want to wrestle with Windows and the plethora of monitors for photo editing since I have used Macs and their 1.8 gamma is ingrained into my soul. LOL.

I would also not want to run a website on a Windows box or crowbar modern  versions of standard software like PHP and Python onto the highly modified semi-open source stack of a Mac. The thing would likely implode.

we are so lucky to live in a world with not one but THREE world class OSes that are all very, very good at what they do best just like any decent tool.

I think you are the first person to ever use the release of ED:Odyssey as a positive example.

It has been almost universally panned by the players, though.. (And I'm talking Saxa head office levels of salt, here, rather than just the occasional spoon of Woodwards gripe water.)

Odyssey is basically slated as a prime example of what happens when a company does NOT listen to its player base and goes ahead and creates a product that very few were interested in and releases it before it's even ready, without testing.

Here are some of the top few criticisms of the game.

    1) The game as a whole had all but completely stalled for nearly 2 years with almost as little progress beyond platitudes and a few very poorly implemented bolt ons that still don't work properly. Ostensibly the 600 person company were all focussed on Odyssey. Moreover, no details of what Odyssey entailed other than being "a significant addition of the order of being a completely different game"  To make matters worse Odyssey has literally broken the previously introduced landmark Fleet Carriers feature (arguably only really big feature released since 2019)... Nobody can move or navigate their Fleet Carriers AT ALL any more.

    2) The players requested FDEV fix the current game before introducing new features. Did they? Did they fuck...
NONE of the top 10 glaring issues and "permanent placeholders" in the base game have even been touched in the last couple of years:
Power play: complete joke... Wings: a joke...  Multiplayer: amazingly not compatible with Wings. i.e. a joke.   Group play instancing: still almost impossible to get more than a handful of people in the same instance... a joke.   Missions: same buggy logic and 10 lines of cheesy as fuck dialog since 2014. SRV (ground vehicle): same single shitty vehicle that supports a single mode of gameplay: i.e. shoot rocks, shoot ships, shoot buttons to activate. Nothing of any depth.

    3) A majority of the players in a poll that was answered by over 3000 players (IIRC) a few years back said many would be happy if they could walk around the interiors of the ship and have interior customisation... VR allowed you to look around the bridge or cockpit of your ship and it was wonderful to get a sense of scale and familiarity with the craft that had been called home for years... Braben had talked at great length in the KS about future goals of repairing and upgrading to your ship by hand, say during a protracted battle... Or EVA to fix parts external parts of your ship...

Most weren't interested in a full blown "space legs" PVP implementation, believing that it would divert attention from the actual issues in the game (see point 1 above).
But FDEV's videos kept going on about "Armstrong Moments" where you could step out of your ship onto land for the first time... It sounded actually quite epic...

But What did they deliver? You press a button and (insert Pythonesque fart noise here) you immediately spawn outside your ship on the ground... THE ONE SINGLE MOST REQUESTED FEATURE was not delivered: i.e. ship interiors had NOT been included.

The game plays like a FPS from 2010 and worse:

    4) Elite is famous for being one of the most grindy games in the world... FDEV mistook this as a compliment and the  actual Odyssey gameplay itself is EVEN MORE GRIND CENTRIC than the original game. and significantly more so.

    5) The new release is buggy beyond belief (I myself have still not managed to leave the starport I spawned in due to recurrent bugs meaning as soon as I try to equip my loadout the game dies) They had no beta at all and went straight to money grabbing full release that barely even works.

    6) Arguably one of the only features of ED to receive maximum marks from everyone and anyone who tried it was its magnificent VR implementation since it was designed around VR from the ground up. It was considered one of, if not THE BEST VR implementations ever made.
But no more... This one truly unrivalled, world class feature was squandered:  VR has been relegated to back seat status with no further thought or development in over 5 years. And to rub salt into the wounds, much of the new UI no longer functions properly in VR since no VR is done any more. They literally took the only feature of the game to be universally given a top score by those who tried it and said: meh, we don't need this.
Even worse: They have removed VR from the actual walking about bit... As soon as you leave your cockpit, the game reverts to pancake mode! THEY REMOVED VR from the one part of the game that would make it most spectacular!

Odyssey is really quite a poor example in nearly every regard.

They are not adding enough features.  How many features have they added in the past year? Pretty sure I could count them on one hand, if they were spectacular enough to remember in the first place.  They need to start releasing new features. Every month a batch of new features should roll out.  I would even go as far as make it so the first thursday of every month you released a new feature.

If you put it on a set time like that everyone thats watching on the shadows will check back every first thursday to see if its something new that wants to bring them back to the game.

Becasue right now, while you guys are releasing allot of patches. they are all backend patches fixing, bugs, lowering server costs, If I was using this software for my company the patches would look great. However I am not using this software for my company I am a gamer. and while I do like to see bug fixes on the list, or new skins. Not seeing any new things to go play with, or new things to go explore new things to build.

Especially when I compare it to other games with smaller teams. that are releasing allot more game content then you guys. Hell there are even people who have released free mods to games that have more content in them then your teams have done in the last year. And I keep hearing you are working on this, you are working on that. And its to the point where I feel you are stringing me along. And until I start seeing actual content put into the game I think I am going to step back a little.

I dont know what the problem is on your side. But maybe you need to fire some under performers?  Plenty of people out there looking for work. And the best part is they can all do it from home.

Now with our train running North East of our base, we have a 12 tile stretch!

I always thought that patch of voxels would resolve to a QR code or something. LOL

I've only had the invalid cell on planetary voxels...   But usually a reset fixes it.  Sometimes I have to plop a massive ice cream scoop of voxels over it and whisk them away to remove the blemish...

One section of planetary voxels with a bug had a window to the soul that if you stepped through, you fell into the core of the Madis. Always wondered what would happen if you threw a dynamic core construct in there.

Yoinks.. sounds rough.  Hope you manage to make something of it this year, since the games appear to be going ahead... at least I already heard teams are on the way here.

I put The Expanse up there with the Battlestar Galactica reboot in terms of story arc and character development. As well as being "Hard Scifi"

Really amazingly rewatchable series. I loved the Tom Waits inspired take on Miller... Just fabulous.. and the dynamics between Earth and Mars and the amazing, downplayed inclusivity without the typical cringe. Perhaps the only downside was the lack of decent music in The Expanse.. Galactica had All Along the Watchtower among other epic music segments...

Now all I'm worrying about is if Apple are going to destroy Foundation... Just rereading the books now.. Don't see how they are going to bring this to an ADHD loaded TikTok audience without eviscerating its depth.
