You're welcome - no worries! On the contrary - thanks for bumping the cc0 to the top of the list. And thanks for your inquiries indeed, they help me advance as well. It's awesome to get new perspectives and inspiration this way ❤️

cc0 is merely a reaction to some people getting overly afraid of not being able to lock down everything they create. We don't even know if we will be able to lock down code and design - maybe this whole idea won't even find any application in DU.

I don't speak for everyone now, but at least I don't have a desire to piss at the legs of fair trading builders. Only in the soup of those that scream "product piracy" from the top of their lungs even before they made any product or started selling. Those who claim DU will fail if we can't secure "intellectual property" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thanks for the nice feedback - I too think it's fun

One thing you got wrong tho: We don't aim at cheap knock-offs. I get how that feels implied - like some dude at the australian bazar selling cheap "Roolex" - but that's far from what we would do. We're more like that tuning garage, where you drive your shiny sports car in and get it back with improved stats. Nobody would call that a cheap copy - not only because copying something will be everything but cheap, but because we'll be even more expensive than the original, because we will provide full access to everything and won't do mass-production or whatever.

So far it's unclear if we even got the skills or manpower needed - or if anyone likes to do anything at all. Sadly the org news got wiped, where I said that the only serious rule in cc0 is "no obligations" - so there might as well be lots of people in our org that just want to make a statement, but will never move a finger to actually copy anything.

You said it: the idea is fun. That's what it's all about - the idea. Tho if someone really puts down the coin, cc0 will most probably get active on the job. Just that nobody will call this cheap - it's the opposite - it's people wealthy enough to afford not only the original, but a dedicated group of "tuners" that take the original and create a copy from it, which will take a long time and for an exact replica we'll need access to the original. We liberate proprietary design and a liberated version of an otherwise locked-down construct will be much more expensive. That was my main argument in previous discussions - a DRM infected product should sell for way less, because the buyer gets way less for the money.

For all I care you could just as well ask the original designer, if he's willing to provide you an unlocked version if you pay him just as much as you'd pay us. Given that through mass-production of locked down constructs you can sell cheaper to the masses, he might even be inclined to setup a contract and get this one-time big bonus

    /edit/ps
Oh, I've put that "no obligations" bit into the OP too. Ha, cool.

    /edit/ps2
Just thought about some crazy designer may ask an incredible amount of money for his proprietary crap. In that case, well, we might be cheaper, true, but it would be an even sweeter treat if we can provide a better version at lower cost

Thing is (if plan works) you will be mostly asked to copy something cool and, most often then not -- rather big. From skilled builders. Who will be known in community. And I'm seriously doubt it will be practical and profitable (not only in material sense) to copy serious "signature" builds, because its more things of artistic prestige and show-offing then any material use. And if everyone knows that its just "stolen copy" (and they generaly will) -- new owner ending percieved kind of bouffun in gentlemen part of community. Like cheap guy with obviously fake expensive watch.

Also, issues with original disign owners can go south (and completly out of hand) extreamly fast. And far beyond gameplay borders. Like they not simply attack your ship, but will hate you as person, seeking all kinds of vengeance.

With smaller and less known things it can work, to extent.

Generaly, idea is fun (as some kind freedom-protest mentality), but potential complications are very harsh.

Personally speaking, winning is the ability to enjoy myself regardless of the outcome.
    I'll give an example...

Couple of sessions ago, i volunteered to drop some folks on a nearby planet.
I'm not over-reacting  when i say that anything that could go wrong - went wrong.
Had one poor guy lose his speeder, ship being too heavy and crashing like a million times and to top it all off, a passenger somehow ejected out in space.
Yet regardless of how much suffering we had to go through,  it was a one of a time experience.
I fondly remember the motivational chants when trying to break off the atmosphere, enjoyed the view from space and chatted together for 3 hours about random stuff - everyone had fun

vertex reacted to NQ-Nyzaltar in Community Portal: Alpha 3 transitional state
    Hi everyone!

With the Alpha 3 deployment around the corner and the RDMS implementation, we had to make significant changes in the background by connecting organizations data available on the Community Portal to the organizations data that will be available in-game. As it is a "Work in Progress", the Community Portal will switch in "Read Only" mode for the time being, to limit the probability of technical issues.

During this transitional period, All management actions for the organizations will be done in-game.
You will also note that the number of legates per organizations isn't displayed anymore.
We are aware the situation isn't ideal, but it's a temporary and necessary step.

Update: Wednesday, January 22th, 16:15 UTC

    What's the current situation?
    To be clear:
    - Posting/Editing News have been deactivated on the Community Portal.
    - It will still be possible to post/edit News on the Community Portal through the in-game User Interface (assuming you have the proper rights to do such thing).
    - Posting/Editing News will remain in a minimal state for the time being (only simple text. HTML code for formating options and image insertion will came back later).
    - Posting/Editing News directly through the Community Portal should come back at a later stage.
    - The "Join Organization / Accept application" feature remains active.
    - The applications pending before the maintenance today should still be there after.
    - Features such promoting or demoting a member will now exclusively in-game (as the process may now involve other game mechanics).
    - Displaying the number of legates on the Organization Ranking page has been deactivated (as an intermediary step of the coming changes in the future).

    What's coming in the future?
(please keep in mind that the features described below are work in progress and might change before their release)

Organization Ranking by the number of Active Members.
As the Community Portal will evolve, we plan to display the number "Active Members" and the number "Honorary Members" for each organization in the future.
The Organization Ranking will be done by the number of Active Members in decreasing order.

What will be "Active Members" and "Honorary Members"?
"Honorary Members" accounts will be accounts that have joined an organization on the Community Portal but haven't access to the game.
"Active Members" accounts will be accounts that have joined an organization on the Community Portal and have access to the game.
Accounts joining an organization directly in-game will be automatically validated as "Active Members" in an organization.
Only "Active Members" will be eligible to legate status, as most organization management actions will be only possible in-game.

    Why planning this?
This is planned for two reasons:
    1) To give a better visibility for newcomers regarding the activity potential of each organization (which can impact the decision of joining one organization or another).
    2) To discourage unfair practices such as creating ghost accounts and making them join an org to inflate artificially its size (and get undeserved visibility).

The (IMHO) idiotic thread about PTW, did raise a question in my mind. What defines "winning" in DU?  In chess, you lose if you are checkmated or decide to resign. In poker, you are a winner if you walk away with more money than you came in with (even if you were "down" for most of the time you played). In a FPS, you "win" if you are the last man standing, or with the most "kills" at the end of the game.  But what about a game with no end? Perhaps its being at the top of the "leader" board in kills, have the most money, most territories owned, rank in your organisation, builder of the biggest construct etc? Frankly, I don't see any of those as defining a winner.
The only way I can see myself as a winner in DU is if I have fun playing and participating in the community.  I start by not defining my self worth on the basis of games won, rank in leader boards etc. More people should try this, they might find they like it.

Pew pew pew! I steal all yer ducks! Err... dacs!

Boy, I was unable to read this inflated thread completely, but I still want to add to the front that welcomes DACs being sold ig, oog and wherever people chose to wave them around.

It seems like all of this is based on the definition of pay to win. I read blablabla DACs ARE pay to win blabla that is FACT blablabla. But all I hear is...

DACs are not pay to win. You should get your definition of p2w straight before even continuing the debate. One side just claiming their interpretation being "FACT" doesn't help anyone and you can't discuss a matter if your terms ain't synchronized in the slightest.

To me "pay to win" is not synonymous to "pay for advantage". Pay to win implies that you need to pay in order to win. As soon as you can win without paying more than everyone else does for subscription, it's not "pay to win" anymore.

You brought up the example of GTA Online? Guess what - I paid for a shark card once to gift it, because I was stupid enough to blow a friends sale worth a million bucks and I wanted to make up for it. Otherwise I'm above level 200, got everything I want, can take up any challange I like - just from doing the default gameplay. That is not pay to win, even if the conversion of real life money to in-game currency is way more direct than selling DACs in DU.

As long as you don't acknowledge there's a difference between getting a (probably little) advantage with selling DAC in order to maybe speed up a win versus a title where you can only win in theory by playing, like all those "free to play - pay to win" titles out there, I consider the claim DU being p2w rather offensive. All discussion with this completely being overlooked is futile to begin with.

By the way: if someone needs to get personal, I think that person should calm down, take a breath and consider the possibility of just being plain wrong. Nothing bad there - we all are at times. Just grow up

    Edit, post scriptum
Could even think of DACs being the opposite of pay to win, because you can play to pay. Of course you'll need longer to achieve something, but do it long enough and (in theory, because we ain't there yet) you could win without paying anything. That's the opposite of the definition for "pay to win" where you can only win if you pay (more).

    Alright.

Things are getting a bit out of hand here.

    @xlDvSlx
    @DvS_UK

Thinking that the DAC system is "Pay to win" is your opinion and it's your right to think that way, even if many people here disagree with you.
However, it's strange that you start a crusade right now on the monetization model as you claimed to be a long time follower of the game.
If you are a long time follower, then you know we never hid what the monetization model was going to be and said it right from the beginning (the Kickstarter Campaign in 2016). If you disagreed on the monetization model, it would have been perfectly understandable to not support the game. Why starting a crusade on this topic now? If you realized what the monetization model was going to be just now or recently, then maybe the real issue here might be "this game is not for you".  In that case, please contact the customer support at support@novaquark.com for such kind of topic. The monetization model has been debated many times, and the Novaquark team has already explained in length why we were going with this one.

For the record, this monetization model has also been adopted by some of the biggest MMORPG, such as World of Warcraft (through the WoW token system, which is exactly the same thing as the DACs) and as far as we know, there hasn't been a huge uproar stating this system is "pay to win". The original definition of "Pay to Win" is the following: it implies you have a system where you can get a specific advantage only by paying. If an advantage can be obtained by playing the game, then, by the original definition, it's not "Pay to Win". Of course all is question of common sense and equilibrium here: if the way of obtaining the said advantage is grinding an incredible amount of hours, making it virtually impossible or irrelevant to get it by playing then yes, it might be considered pay to win in disguise. But we are nowhere near this situation in Dual Universe (or else, you're welcome to give very specific examples, and not vague assumptions. The examples you have given so far are just too vague to be considered as such). On the opposite side of the spectrum, the expression "Pay to Win" have been used and exaggerated many times over the years. There has been excess on both sides.

In any case, starting to say "some people should be shot down", for whatever reason it may be, is a no go and a direct breach with the forum rules.
Also, resorting to personal attack and/or provocations toward those who don't agree with you is just an invitation for trouble and another breach of the forum rules.

This is the first and last warning.

While your post started in an attempt to convince people from your point of view (which is fine), it quickly escalated in provocations and nothing really constructive. So we ask you to change the way you discuss with other community members on the forum (stop being provocative), or your posting rights may be removed (temporarily at first, and possibly in a definite way if you insist in this behavior).

This topic has derailed enough and will now be locked.

    Best Regards,
    Nyzaltar.

Neither do they, a sub model is needed for du anyway. Eve was dead since 2005, still going tho.....and WAY more successful than any other MMO too.

Buying dacs for rl money give Nq more money than a sub. Then you can sell them on the ingame markets either via direct sell (fullfilling buy orders from ppl at a considerably lower price) or Setting up a sell order for a higher price, but you have to wait until ppl buy them.
This will ofc change buy/sell margins and other adapt their prices too. Thus prices for dacs decrease because of more supply. Thus getting you less and less quanta for each dac.

After say a month you sold everything and then you got 2billion quanta out of it. Now what? How is that p2w? What do you think you can "pay" in order to "win"?

Well, I'd expect some form of "Intellectual Property Repossession Corps" to evolve in the future as part of emergent gameplay. As I understand it players will have to set up their own police force and rules.

Quite frankly I do have a slight fraction of fear that NQ might get the impression that this organization is aimed towards harrassing other players or organizations. That's definitely not the intended purpose, but if this concern should arise, I'll close the gates without resistance. Tho I hope this won't be the case and we'll be allowed to have our fun

I think we'll see during Alpha/Beta how this plays out and if it creates too much discord we'll start with a blank slate on release, living within the yet to be finalized ruleset.

I've just blindly accepted the first member and missed to read the application. First time I got one from somebody I didn't already know
Does anyone know if I can still view the original application message again somewhere?

@Kiwi well, we have a rule that no org member is allowed to work against his or her other organizations he/she is a member of - at least not on account of CC0. This one rule already excludes anarchy as organization form. Tho even "anarchy" and "organization" do somewhat exclude each other already. Then again what else but anarchy is Dual Universe in the beginning? Anarchy is prone to give birth to groups or clans, which will have their own set of rules and moral code - what else is this world but anarchy with huge clans called France, Germany, EU or USA? Apart from that I might add some anarchistic touch to the organization - I really like that idea - thank you

    /edit/1st
Oh and another thing regarding the placement of this organization: I think it makes a great target for all the military groups to track and hunt down "counterfeit product". I don't know if we'll even get there, but don't see everyone stealing from you as a problem, when you could see it as incentive to act and prosecute instead. Something the "IPRC" can put your awesome products to good use for, eh?

vertex got a reaction from Movix in Tutorial: Voxelmancy Essentials
Important edit in front of this posting: I just learned more about the topic and need to relativize. When I looked at that "voxel library", I took it as some kind of "ingame construct" that lets you copy individual voxels to use somewhere else. But now I've found the "Voxel Element Library" on trello, which actually sounds very useful and is currently listed as "should make it to beta" - so all of my following concerns already are largely accounted for. Still I'd like to see an option to manipulate vertices (not me of course, please) individually, but that library would be a huge improvement already.

I hope for a voxel editor too, since that "voxel library", while surely being a great achievement, really looks awful for what it implies and makes building a virtual world almost harder than building the same thing in the real world. It basically is the opposite of what I am looking for when using a computer to get creative. When I have an idea, the computer shall aid me achieve it - not add artificial barriers, solely based on technology limitations and lack of development. For this developers should be the ones creating comfortable interfaces for humans to make the software do as desired/intended. If the human needs to run the code in their brain over and over again, because the developer failed to provide a proper tool, it invalidates the whole concept of computing, where you find software algorithms for repeated tasks like these.

I agree that, in my past too, there was a time when I was still "discovering computers" and considered myself soo witty while hacking one workaround for the lack of tools after another into my machine - but today I know this should not even be necessary, because the pleasure in creativity and construction neither least nor last scales with the use of proper, professional tools and should never become a dull chore. If it's the tool that makes it hard to create what you desire and the game designer can't find another way to "challenge the player", then (in my personal opinion!) the concept is just seriously flawed.

Another side to this is that yes, as already said, it makes the people capable of going through such a hassle, somewhat rare and special. But that is not what you want for "emergent gameplay" and a "player-built world", because everyone wants to get creative at some point and if the most basic shapes are this hard to achieve, then yes, you may have one very beautiful construct in a thousand, but it also means 999 others, that look like mashed potatoes, clutter the whole scenery  On the other hand, a beautiful work of art does not just come for free with professional tools - the artists still need a sense for aesthetics - but then they could focus on this, instead of becoming some kind of hybrid between borderline OCD and what they originally wanted to do

    @Tordan
I can see why you've got mixed feelings about this, but I really think that proper tools just make the whole world more beautiful and enable many more artistic people to get creative. In my opinion this outweighs the glorified elitism for a small handful of so-called "voxelmancers" by far

It’s not a punishment and we limited the inconvenience to the minimum possible by just resetting the member list of the Organization. This has been done to remove all ghost accounts and make the involved Organizations restart on a healthier basis.

We also made sure that at least one person in each of the involved Organizations can re-invite real members in the Organization:
    - CN_Firestorm for “Dark Star Imperium”
    - Chipfromearth/SpaceKitty for “New Genesis” (until the end of TMA’s ban)

You are more than welcome to contact them to join theses Orgs again if you wish to do so.
Keeping in mind that besides the cleaning of ghost accounts, nothing else has been removed. All community work/content related to these Organizations have been left untouched. We are also going to send an email to all ex-members to inform about the member list reset and offer them to join their former organization again.

Regarding the ban of the leaders of these Organizations:

We understand that seeing your leader banned might be frustrating. However, we want to make it clear that being at the head of a big Org does not give a free pass on toxic behavior and/or bad practices that could damage the Community as a whole. Being passionate, being young, creating quality content is no free pass for such things either. That’s why all the permanent bans decided recently are final. We are not giving such heavy sanctions with a light heart or on a whim. In more than four years, the number of community members who have been banned permanently from the community can still be counted on the fingers of one hand. We think it speaks volume... Some recent rumors say that the bans may be reversed or canceled. There is no ground to such rumor. It’s just disinformation. The fact that a banned member will “not tolerate that” has no weight either. It’s the Novaquark team’s call and the Novaquark team alone.

Now, we want to give a fair warning to anyone wanting to challenge Novaquark’s decisions openly, directly or indirectly. If a community member has been permanently banned from the Community, he’s excluded from the game, which means he shouldn’t be in any Organization anymore. Reinviting or keeping a community member banned permanently could have serious consequences (such as Organization disbanding but not limited to that, as this could trigger other sanctions for those actively supporting banned members).

Now to address some specific questions/rumors:

We exceptionally give some details to the Community to show that we are not banning randomly or without a serious reason. We do it only because some banned members try to take advantage of the confidentiality policy to enforce their own narrative and play the victim, and attempt to misinform other players. Don’t expect the Novaquark team to give anymore information on this case or the possible future ones.

    “Banning Sakej99 was a mistake. He’s a different person from FullSend/Lime”.
The Novaquark team is aware that Sakej99 and FullSend/Lime are different persons. However, that doesn’t change the fact that the permanent ban affects FullSend/Lime will also affect accounts he may have access to (by account sharing, which is forbidden in our EULA). This is one of the main reasons why we are so serious about forbidding account sharing. If someone sanctioned got access to your account, the sanction can be extended to the said account even if you haven’t done anything wrong.

“FullSend/Lime has been unfairly banned, with no prior warning.”
First, for the infraction this community member has committed, there will never be a warning as it was obviously utterly wrong: if a false report is sent to the Customer Support in an attempt to make another community member banned, the one getting the ban is the one who sent the false report. And in this case, indeed, there is no prior warning.

Second, FullSend/Lime is probably the person in the community who would deserve multiple permanent bans (if it was possible), due to previous infractions in addition to the most recent one. Playing the card “no prior warning” is just complete dishonesty and denial of assuming the consequences of his actions during the past couple of years. Here is a short list of the infractions he has done in the past:
    - Asking members of one of his former organization to give login and password of their accounts to him.
    - Using accounts of other players.
    - Creating ghost accounts.
    - Using a loophole in the organization management system on the Community Portal in an attempt to sabotage/destroy an organization by using the account of another player.
    - Participating in a doxxing attempt.
    - Always denying the facts or trying to minimize them, to the point of reaching self-absolving, to avoid dealing with the consequences (a practice reiterated with his last infraction).
Due to the history of this community member, there was no reason for “prior warning” with his last infraction. He has been warned too many times already. Mistakes are not erased just because it happened “long ago”.

By default, Organisations where FullSend was the founder have their ownership transmitted to the oldest member with the ability to create an organization, which gave the following results:
    - CN_Firestorm becomes the new owner of “Dual Insider”.
    - Gravetender becomes the new owner of “Project Azimuth”.
If you are a member of one of these organisations and you want to discuss these changes, please contact the new owner of the Organization.

(About DSI) “There has been a total wipe of the parties to kill the conflict”
Wrong. If that was the case, we would have dismantled “DSI” directly and ban both DSI leaders, which would have included CN_Firestorm. You can assume that if it’s not the case, this is precisely because there is a difference between CN_Firestorm and Primarch. This sanction wasn’t against DSI. The sanction was against Primarch.

Some of the banned members may say “They will be back”.
It’s up to them. However, if we catch them, they will be banned without further notice.

    Best regards,
    The Novaquark team.

vertex reacted to NQ-Nyzaltar in "DSI / TSU / UEE" investigation
    Dear community members,

A few weeks ago, we took a stance regarding “out of the game”/IRL-related practices to discredit, threaten or shame publicly another Community Member (even if the involved person is guilty of several infractions) that could be an opponent in-game.

As the DSI (Dark Star Imperium) / TSU (Trinary Star Union)  / UEE (United Earth Empire) case blew out of proportion during January, we investigated.

We are really serious about differentiating real life from the game itself. Unfortunately some didn’t take our stance seriously. We gave them a chance to come clean in a private discussion and restart on an healthier basis. They didn’t take the opportunity for what it was: a last chance.
As they preferred “playing dumb” with Novaquark staff, we can’t have any trust that they won’t continue. Therefore we have decided to ban permanently those Community Members for various reasons (all not being banned for the same reason(s)):
Not being honest towards Novaquark staff. Making and encouraging ghost accounts. Abusive recruitment practices. Practising real life harassment and/or threatening another player. Making false report to Novaquark’s Customer Support in an attempt to make ban someone they dislike. Spreading real life information without the involved person’s consent, aka Doxxing.
(strong reminder: even if a person gives you real life information about him/her, it’s not okay to share these information with ANYONE else without his/her consent. You can’t predict how the other person(s) will use this information and if he/she/they won’t share it again. If some trouble occurs following this sharing, you can be held legally responsible).

This might seem an extreme sanction but this shows how serious we are when we say we are not going to let toxic attitude and practices spread in the Community. Our goal to build a healthy and friendly community isn’t just a figure of speech. Anyone caught to spread or encourage any toxic behavior will be removed from the Community as it will be considered as damaging the Community and negating Novaquark staff efforts (without saying that it’s time consuming and a waste of our resources).

Saying it’s a long time grudge coming from before the arrival in the Dual Universe community is absolutely not a valid excuse. If someone has a personal grudge with another community member, he/she should either:
Leave it at the doorstep and/or settle it in private and peacefully with no one else involved. Contact directly (and only) Novaquark staff if the issue persists.
The moment someone uses the Dual Universe community as a tool for IRL revenge, he/she is not welcome anymore. We’re all here to have fun. It should always stay that way.

Therefore, the following Community Members have been permanently banned from the Community:
    Lime / Fullsend / mmtheboss / Sakej99 [DSI] Primarch Zelevas / TharisUEE Melkor_Morgoth
In addition the DSI Organization member list has been reset, and the Novaquark Team has appointed CN_Firestorm as the new owner of the Organization, should he accept to take a fresh start on a healthy basis.

We also give a warning to all those who were indirectly involved (with the evidence we found) but not actively participating in the recent community troubles. Next time, there won’t be any new warning. If you become involved against your will in some shady real life activities, you have only two healthy options:
Leaving the group doing such activity immediately. Report it to Novaquark staff.
If you stay in such group without leaving or reporting it and the group is caught, you take the risk to get the same sanction as those actively involved.
This investigation has taken (or more precisely wasted) a lot of time from Novaquark staff. We really don’t like to intervene in players affairs. However, if there is a chance that such affairs damage the Community by toxic behavior, you can expect Novaquark staff to step in. We hope we won’t have to take the same measures again.

    Best regards,
    The Novaquark Team.
