Uhmmmm,  jetpacks for control of decent/short vertical movement when planet side? An additional spacesuit upgrade package for spacewalking? Just a thought. Future tech and all,  a parachute seems really kind of ancient psuedo-tech for where DU says we are in a technology sense. We are beyond parachutes,  we have anti-gravity thrusters.  But I would like to make orbital base jumping a thing,  seems like an awesome thrill, ( think of the VR possibilities. The wingsuit idea also opens up a lot of cool possibilities .) But I think a jet pack system is probably the easiest/most in line with the tech level of the game world.

The key thing is balance! Stand off / long range weapons are cool to use but can also cause unbalance in a game and abuse if the defender does not have equal weapons or counter measures for protection.

The good thing is NQ wants every playstyle to be in even ground.
Safezones? Sure, builders can do their stuff there.
But space is dangerous and they want that feeling ingame too.

So I Like their approach very much: do ASA/MSA with Basic resources for every non-PvP player and make UA rewarding but dangerous - i wouldn't be upset If the starting system as a whole is a safezone tbh. If ppl want rare resources they have to Go outside - and that's a very good approach imho

I would have no problem with a magical invisibility cloak - If the ship is completely blind then too and has to rely in sensors or stuff...

Such a mechanic needs delicate balancing otherwise or just gets abused

It's a bit different with weapons - you need to point them in quite specific direction. If your ship is made to always mine in front, then someone can just map mining to spacebar, and put coffee cup on it. So you program only ship movement, and character just constantly press mine button.

But. If veins between stone are shaped like thick spaghetti floating in the water, then it could work. As you would not strip mine, but actually have to follow the vein (even if a bit bigger and more loose than veins for hand mining). Which require actual player attention and control - problem with bots solved.

Since the topic came up, I would recommend this video. It has pretty good discussion on some things you might want to consider for a good flag, banner, emblem with good and bad examples as title suggests.

Dropping a percentage of your gold on death is so medieval. Noveans are in the future where crypto-currency rules supreme. Instead of mining in the cloud, Noveans may mine in the dirt and transform real arm-straining work into units representing their work and time. Imagine a decentralized currency that no burglar can break in to steal. Imagine a bank in each Noveans head that no bank robber can rob. Imagine...Quanta.

Does it make any sense for these bits of 1s and 0s to shower to the ground in a fountain of credits as you dramatically scream your last breath (at least from the current body)?

Say "No". Say "No" to having your hard earned time stolen. Say "No" to losing Quanta on death.

I think NQ made the right decision don't forget there will be many types of players and if you start robbing people  with no safety net type systems you are going to lose a lot of people that want to play your game but will not be cause of it ! To some people not interested in being a  pirates or PvP player : why waste time / months and money some times really money investing into something that some one can destroy in a few seconds that's a no win scenario for them.

Even if you loot someone in game why is it a big deal to also take there money? You could still make a profit off the items you looted from them right? I use to PvP but I still don't understand why some players want to be able to loot all my items and take all my money leaven me with zero : butt naked and no cash  O.o

The more risk and danger you introduce to the game, the more it becomes an "ultra-hardcore PVP game", which does not seem to be what NQ are aiming for.

There is an audience for that kind of game play in an MMO, but it's a small one. The design that NQ has shown us so far indicates that they plan on appealing to a wider audience. They probably need a wider audience, DU is a subscription game after all, and it's not going to survive with a few thousand players...

GunDeva reacted to NanoDot in Concerns About PVP
I'd guess it's a really a question of "How much opportunity cost will be involved by playing with this group ?"

For instance, if you like fighting in squads, then joining a military org will carry ZERO opportunity cost, it will in fact have bonuses !
But if you like building nice city layouts, joining a military org may severely limit the amount of your game time that can be spent on doing the things that you prefer doing.

That's a very simplistic example, but it illustrates the point. Things are usually a bit more nuanced.

If you like building, you can join a group that's focused on building, but you may find that you're spending most of your time as a worker building whatever the "chief architect" of the group has designed. And there is usually only one "chief architect", so unless your part of the senior leadership, it's unlikely to be you...

Joining a group inevitably means spending time on things the group has prioritised. The trick is finding the right group so that your interests align as closely as possible with that of the group in general. Some people simply aren't prepared to make those compromises.

GunDeva reacted to GraXXoR in Sandbox vs Themepark MMOs - What do you think?
I initially enjoyed Elite Dangerous due to the open ended sandbox nature of the game.  However, if I take the liberty of tediously stretching a metaphor to breaking point, the ED sandbox was literally a mile wide and only an inch deep and as for working tools, only a small spoon was provided.
There were scoops without handles, some didn’t even have a bottom edge, there were wireframe outlines of some toy earth-movers, a bit of paper that said, “this will be a bucket” and a photograph of a hose labeled “water”.
Literally nothing was fleshed out properly and still hasn’t been after three years.
And I haven’t even mentioned the open ended endless repetitive grind that pervaded every single aspect and the only interaction was to shoot stuff.

It was like a sandbox filled with tiny little repetitive FTP “amusement” parks.

The reason I chose to jump ship is because DU promises to allow the players to actually communicate meaningfully and achieve something together. A real sandbox with real tools and an incredible level of openness.

Here you go from the same video guy: The Death of Virtual World Design for Themepark Commercial Success this from the a "lead designer" on SWG at the time reasoning for the NGE. Notice the appeal to EGO? Notice the narrowing of the game experience in favour of "instant gratification". Further, the other notable thing: The devs told the players how they should be experiencing the game: It was not their world or creation!

GunDeva reacted to Sunrider44 in Sandbox vs Themepark MMOs - What do you think?
I definitely prefer sandbox too. But I think that the community around the game is another important point, I would prefer play a game with low quality but a friendly community rather than a "perfect" game with a grinding community.

There is a key expression for me in this vidéo: this guy said that a sandbox is a long term investment and a Themepark game a short term investment. I think it does not only reflect the evolution of the video game industry, but the evolution of the world through globalisation. In this way, the short term profit and the financial power, based on a ruthless competition has crushed any other way to manage the world.

Recently, I've realized how much the new MMORPGs, like Revelation Online for instance, look like to a day at work, competing harshly to be the first in the top list, to be the first to get the new stuff, to be the first to get everything and finally maybe paying a lot of monney and/or time to consume the content without even the pleasure to do it. It's more and more like an addiction, like social networks are sometimes.
Games like this are not "RPG" anymore, they are MMOthemepark, MMOArena or MMOcasino, and it brings more monney...

Finally, other players could be bot or AI at this point... What a paradox for a MMO!

    Watch this vidéo.
Or read this about Tristan HARRIS and the Silicon Valley.

    Maybe a MMO-RPG is just a nonsens.

Why? Because RPG is basically something about our human experience: me inside a story (like in a novel) or me interacting with other people (basic roleplay or board game) and that is what makes the experience valuable and interesting. And it's not possible to interact with everybody at the same time!

For me, that makes a MMO really worthy is the human experience, and this experience is strongly linked to the expression of our creativity and identity, finding a role or place in a bigger group. We find in it an alternative to the every day life, an "Oasis", just like in Ready Player One. Other people can find an oasis in their family, hobbies, friends or spirituality... Maybe after all, the sandbox MMO is the only MMO or MMORPG which makes sense?

So if I bring back something social, some knowledge or some wisdom from a game it's a good game. If I only play automatically or to get another level or another piece of stuff or only to don't feel alone, it's a bad or not so good game.

    Thanks for reading!

GunDeva reacted to Ben Fargo in Question on losing inventory upon death
I do not think DAC should be unlootable.  That implies it exists as an item in the game, but can not be stolen.  I think it should not be an object in the game at all.  The reason I say that is I like games to be immersive and I hate having things in the game that deliberately break it.  Having a payment for a game's subscription be an object in the game definitely breaks immersion.

I would recommend that the first time DAC are sold, they become bound to the account of the person who buys them.  That would allow them to serve their purpose of allowing people to exchange quanta for a subscription without leading to speculation by buying and selling them.

There will be many in-game items that we will be to trade and transport, so opportunities for risk and reward are already there.   Making DAC one more in-game item does not actually add any gameplay.  It just blurs the distinction between the game and real-life by letting people steal something that has actual value.
