I have purged some of the Logs and updated the Previous page, from Sept. 23 to Feb. 2.

    It seemed... neater.

    Hello everyone.

For this article I had the chance to talk with Code24 about his organization Objective Driveyards.
Follow the link to get a closer look at ODY. We even have a preview of a concept ship that is currently being designed by Dalmont.

    Outpost Zebra

It has been a labour of love, it has. For weeks, a dedicated team worked tirelessly to achieve a goal. A goal not driven by the reward of money or the promise of fame; a goal unaltered by difficulties and undimmed by rumours. That goal, my friends, is Outpost Zebra.

This humble Outpost has no other purpose, but to spread the news of Dual Universe far and wide, to provide a platform for interaction between organisations and players alike. Consider it a home away from home, the figurative middle ground where parties on both sides of the spectrum meet to discuss events, share ideas, express opinions, promote their interests, find new friends…recruit new members.

    In the words of Falstaf:

Today, that idea has finally taken form. Aided by the ever ready help of ATMLVE, the skill of Epidemic, the expertise of Kael and the knowledge of Anonymous, and the quiet support from members of this Community, Falstaf’s dream of the platform for ideas and opinions to be shared has come true.

“Oz”, as we affectionately call it, is still in its infancy. It will mature in due time, and grow greater than many believe it can. However, for that to happen, Oz will need your patronage and your help.
Its goal is not to replace the Dual Universe Forums. No. That is neither our plan nor its purpose. Its goal is to complement the Forums, reach a wider audience, provide a place where conflicts are set aside and new ideas are birthed over jokes, galleries, articles, stories and media.

Outpost Zebra is a vantage point, looking over Dual Universe and bringing its best to you without the need to login and play.

Hopefully, it will convince thousands that Dual Universe is a life worth living.

It’s online now – the Outpost is active.

    Cheers.

Perhaps, we can use the mechanics of hacking access from other RPG's. For example, in WatchDogs 2, the amount of any game element: money, popularity, 'network' (forgive me, I can't remember their actual names), you can hack from phones, is fixed by random variables. You can never get more than what the dice rolls - so to speak, and conversely, you can never get less.

There is also the mechanic of hacking that NQ refers to as emergent gameplay, though the information on that is quite lacking and possibly outdated at this point. What could be possible, is a skill that allows you steal a certain amount of Quanta from someone in close proximity. This amount has a fixed ceiling - possibly dictated by skill level. Trying to 'liberate' the Quanta from one person would force you to establish a 'link' of sorts with that person with a minimum time for the link to be locked. Depending on your skill level and the amount of time, you can spend connected to a certain avatar, the amount of Quanta taken increases. That would mean you need the time, skill, place and target. Should the target move out of your proximity range, break the link (there could be tools in place for hacking detection), or should your connection fail, your effort is for not. Perhaps, NQ could put some sort of alarm that spotlights the hacker if the process fails. Risk vs Reward. It also prevents any botting action if that's efficiently possible in DU. The hackers would just identify a very predictable avatar and leech the Quanta out of it.

As for stealing someone's identity, I think that should be limited to accessing elements, with some being too secure to hack that way i.e. secured containers. Of course, if someone can hack into your base by faking your identity, there must be a way to detect and prevent that too. One way to do that may be a programming board/element that acts as some sort of failsafe, alarm or security. The element in question should be reasonably priced, not too much to obtain if the 1 month player has something to protect, and not too cheap to allow the Week 1 player to start trading with them. Remember, the effectiveness of the 'hacking' will be dependent on skill level. There's no way you'd be able to train the skill effectively in one month given the prerequisite skills and the actual skill's requirements.

Depending on how far NQ may be willing to take the idea, such security element may also be needful on crafts and ships to prevent them from being stolen. Skill level in the hacking skill mayy determine how fast the hacking process is completed, what level of security it can override, what elements it can override. Although, for the sake of gameplay, I propose that the security element be able to log the ID of the player that hacked into the construct and send such information via mail -- whether or not the hacking process was completed successfully.

    Cheers.

Scandalous times indeed as DU's shady political sphere bleeds over into the real world. But there's also good news. Fortunately, Ark Central is here with the facts in this month's April news update.

There's a new article on Oz, by DU's Alsan_Teamaro. It's his first piece and by all means, a solid entry.
@Alsan_Teamaro's article on Oz takes a look at the organisational structures in Dual Universe, with some funny puns and videos along with it. If you are thinking of building an organisation or already have one and need some tips on the mode of governance (not all leaders are dictators), Alsan's article is an insightful - if witty - piece.

The soundtracks for the Pre-Alpha Teaser and the Outpost Contest videos were composed by Maxime Ferrieu, the creator of the original Dual Universe tracks you can hear on SoundCloud and other medias.

Those soundtracks, however, have a definitively more "epic" vibe to it, a break from the soothing, mellow, kind-of-generic "space music" we've had until now, and since Maxime became Audio Lead for Novaquark last month, we may be in for a general shift of musical ambiance.

I would like to provide an example from a different game. Now I don't want people to start comparing the games in great detail, as I do not think they can be compared deeply - at best, they share similarities or universal aspects.

My point now is size, however. And control of groups over territory.

I will use DayZ as example

I will refer to the map you can play in.

v Maps in spoiler to keep post short v

A wiki entry states the country itself is 225 km2 in size, so the playable map in the first picture above is way smaller. Some google search hinted at it only being 16 x 16 km or so. I currently play it actively in an RP community on a private shard that does well to simulate evolving and growing (or dissolving) player factions. Granted, in this example we have to keep in mind that server population is ultimately limited. Just like map size is compared to DU or comparable games.

But the point here is how player factions exert control over parts of the playable areas. For example, in that community there is currently a major conflict going on between "Anarchy forces" who have ties to some communist secessionist movement that grabbed parts of the nation in the chaos following some rabies infection, and some resistance with ties to the original government of the nation - all portrayed by players. For a long while they exerted power over the survivor populace. Only recently, from government controlled areas, paramilitary, government backed forces returned to the province to engage those anarchy forces.

In a more abstract or general fashion,  we basically had an aggressive group who'd also raid, rob, murder people at will and not everyone submitted to or agreed with them. Some fought. Some stayed away from them. Depending on the player or person you are, you have many options. They were or are a powerful group and good at PVP. They do have numbers and more members than most other groups on average. But the thing is, they can't be everywhere at once. The map above might seem small, especially if you know it well or just look at the map and different scale. But it's still huge in a certain way, with cities, villages and lots of forests. Now not just counting size and looking at player interactions, what happened? A group began to drive others away or piss them off. In that case you can bugger off, join them or fight back. That's what people eventually did - they started fighting back because they grew tired of their antics. This lead to several people and groups forming an alliance to fight those people. And then even other factions joined in, events are generated, content is generated, people are having fun. Instead of complaining about others earning their influence or getting to where they got, people roll with it and incorporate it into their gameplay.

But enough of this example now.

Dual Universe will be even bigger than just a patch of land in a nation, on one planet. Now I get that there will also be vastly more players and all of them will be on the same server or run around in the very same game universe instead of being separated by servers. The scale therefore goes up. But with theoretically endless space and many options, I really - for now - see little need for panic or above-average concerns for the future.

I want to see a large group blockade a whole planet effectively if space will indeed be big in DU later on.

And maybe ... if they got to that point ... they even somewhat earned it. I'll worry or consider dev involvement when it actually happens and when a point is reached where gameplay is severely impacted for new players (there). And before "out of game" involvement or concern is or should be a thing, there's plenty of ways to react to a perceived developing threat with game measures.

I also still see plenty of room for smaller organizations. Not everyone wants to or can be the elephant in the room, as large communities or organizations can be volatile if the right conditions are met. In other words, Empires rise and fall.

As I believe in emergent gameplay in general, I'm also so far against a system to limit organization size by numbers. Again, if people can manage to pull something (large) off and maintain it over time, I see no reason to put stones in their way - unless it turns into an "out of game" problem for new players.

But time shall tell. I just see no real need to worry until then, frankly.

Vyz Ejstu reacted to NQ-Nyzaltar in Player Recruitment & Advertisement: dos and don'ts
    I) About Dual Universe (and/or a DU Organization) Advertisement

    (a) It's fine to advertise the game and/or your DU Organization(s) to players you already know or with whom you have already played with in other games without harassing them. If they aren't interested, do not insist.

    (b) It's absolutely not acceptable to enter other gaming communities with the only intent being to randomly advertise Dual Universe or your DU Organization to players you don't know. Being polite isn't enough. Participating in said group with the intention to legitimize your advertisement is not enough either. You won't fool many people with this method. While one player may be convinced to join your Organization, it will most likely antagonize significantly more players, making them hostile toward you and Dual Universe due to these cheap and inappropriate practices.

If you don't understand why this is wrong, just imagine players coming from 10 different game communities and invading your Discord, subReddit, or Steam group, falsely pretending to be interested in the game you’re playing while instead being there to make advertisements for the game he plays in your channels. Any person would quickly be tired of this behavior and ban them all, as well as form a negative image of the game that has been advertised. Please don’t do this.  Not only is this rude, this can be considered harassment in addition to brand damage, which could result in a ban from Dual Universe for such behavior.

    (c) While it didn’t seem clear for everyone so far (despite being in our EULA and in our forum chart here), here is a strong reminder: impersonating Novaquark staff is a serious offense. This will result in a permanent ban without further notice or discussion. There is also no limitation period for this offense (meaning: if we got proof of Novaquark staff impersonation several months or even years later, the sanction will still be applied).

    (d) While this has been some kind of grey area until now, there won’t be sanctions applied to involved Organizations for the past actions. However, from now on, Organizations that will benefit from the aforementioned bad practices could see their member list reset at Novaquark’s sole discretion. We wish to make it clear that there is nothing to gain from such advertisement and recruitment practices as well as inform other gaming communities that the Novaquark staff will not tolerate these methods of advertisement and recruitment.

II) About Gifting Practices as a Recruitment Incentive

Novaquark has not enforced any strict rules regarding gifting practices so you are free to gift DACs or Supporter Packs as you see fit. However, we don’t encourage use of this freedom as a recruitment incentive unless you are perfectly fine with the definition of "gifting" (giving something for free to someone else without expecting anything in return for this gift).

Before gifting a DAC or a Supporter Pack, you should carefully consider that a player could leave your Organization or simply never join it at all. In this situation, this will be your responsibility and we will not refund nor reverse the gift you made to another player. The Novaquark team will not step in to oblige the receiver to fulfill his part of the bargain either (if there was any).

    So choose and gift wisely.

If you have any further questions on the topic, please let us know.

    Best Regards,
    The Community team.
