This is the worst case scenario. Where the official response to an issue that has been plaguing the general community for the longest time is "It's not our problem" until the devs get hit by it.

Can you see what kind of precedence you are placing by putting yourselves ABOVE the players this way? SPECIALLY since there was NOTHING in the rules stating that this would be a violation.

Simply assuming that people will work by your own definition of "common sense" is folly. Specially when your view excludes the "common sense" of other people in the first place.

My own interpretation of "common sense" here, is that if you allow one person to exploit the system in unintended ways against another player, you should expect this kind of behavior to apply to EVERYONE. you included. If you fail to protect yourselves properly against this, then it falls strictly to YOU for failing to do so. If you do not like this, then you need to apply and enforce stricter rules protecting EVERYONE from these unlawful exploits.

Heed my warning: If you are going to play favorites, this project will end in bankrupcy.

The proper way to handle this, would be a slap on the wrist of the people responsible, and working on fixing the issue for everyone.

NQ has never declared this and exploit (or recognized this may be the result of buggy code) even when they have been provided with many reports on this. Maybe now they will wake up and face the facts of their RDMS implementation being rather .. well .. not water tight..

So I'd agree they really can't ban anyone for this as by their own ruleset (which no doubt will now be changed) this is a valid action which is not punishable an entirely caused by the victim not setting rights correctly.

Things may change going forward which is good and this also shows that the level of serious bugs and exploits possible possibly leading to unjustified enrichment and impact on the game really calls for .. drastic measures. Not sure how long it will be before this reaches a point where things need to be removed from the game. And it would be very "unfair" if NQ decides to now delete things or punish players while they have let this brew and simmer pretty much since the early start (as in day 2) of beta for backers.

    Greetings from Dianoian Directorate [DIA]!

DIA is composed mostly of post-beta Eve Online players. We didn't have 3 years to establish a membership, perfect construct designs, or impressive LUA codes. But we are catching up quite fast! With over 170 members 1.5 months into the beta, DIA is one of the fastest growing organizations in Dual Universe. You will notice this spirit of hasty growth in areas ranging from our construct designs to organizational structure. DIA is full of opportunities!

I am DIA's founding president, Olmeca Gold. If you played Eve, you might know me from my space piracy activities (and servitude as CSM 14). I am also known for the documentary I made featuring a David vs. Goliath kind of gameplay in Eve. My goal in DU is to build a full-fledged space empire similar to the groups we see in Eve. In Eve's harsh spirit, we will learn the game's mechanics and use them to the best of our ability together, and we plan to be drastically aggressive as DU progresses into iterations of PvP.

In one month, DIA is proud to having established following services:

    – Alioth Factory: Access to every item in the game.
    – Alioth Real-Estate: A home adjacent to Alioth Market 7 in our Sky City.
    – 5 Outer Planet Colonies: Access to all tiers of ore.
    – Public Colony Ships: Mine and scan at the colonies without needing your own ship.
    – Freight Services: DIA will move your ore from DIA colonies to Alioth.
    – Free Warp Taxi: Free warp service anywhere!
    – Internal Banking System: No effort goes unrewarded!

    Some collective DIA activities:

    - Participate in PvP with powerful ships of the DIA Navy.
    - Make millions per hour in Meganode mining operations on Alioth.
    - Colony mining operations.
    - Collective building/coding projects.
    - New player training programs on design, pvp, transport, industry, and other aspects of the game.

    Sample paid/salaried careers in DIA:

    - Space Trucker
    - Ship Designer
    - Taxi Driver
    - Fleet Commander
    - Factory Manager
    - Accountant
    - Miner
    - Mining Foreman

le_souriceau reacted to Mordgier in JC - This game is not Ready Player One....
....and if it were - that would NOT be a good thing!

Alright, this is something that's been bothering me for some time from JCs interviews - and yesterday's Easter Egg interview pushed me over the edge to where I really have to say something...

First and foremost - lets face the reality that Ready Player One would be a horrible game for most people nor would the events of the book be enjoyable for the majority of the player base.

If you're looking at your game and going "Hey look it's just like RPO!" - what I hear is "Look just a handful of no lifers got to have all the fun!". That IS the plot of RPO. A tiny group of players who take the game WAY WAY WAY WAY too seriously get to enjoy the content while the rest may as well not exist.

The puzzle fit this perfectly. A tiny group of players with tons of NDA covered information going back to pre-alpha solve a puzzle while the rest of the community doesn't even know it exists. Yup  - very RPO.

JC - The takeaway from the puzzle event should not be that "Look it was just like RPO! I did a good job!" - it should be that "The event was a complete failure and did not involve the majority of the community in a meaningful way, and was solved largely due to a bug and alpha knowledge that was not available to the bulk of the community."

Please please please for the sake of DU - stop trying to make this game like a fictional book about a fictional game. You need to take a serious look at how other games have done community events and have managed to involve much larger groups of players. Everything from opening the gates of Ahn'Qiraj to the Elite Dangerous Alien events - yes they were flawed in their own ways - but by and large involved more people.

Finally, this doesn't just cover events. The general game mechanics cannot be based on the mindset "Just like RPO!" - because I repeat - RPO would be a horrible game. In fact, I would go as far as saying if you are looking at any upcoming part of the game like AvA or Territory Warfare or Atmospheric combat and can say "This is just like RPO!" - then it probably needs to be reworked to NOT be like RPO but to be like an actual game that would be fun for more people.

Once again - face reality - RPO was a no life simulator where only the no lifers mattered.

This means designing things in consideration of players who are not willing to play DU 16 hours a day - and entire teams of such players.

Players are not going to want to spend hours waiting for an attack on a territory to man the manual guns because you refuse to consider automatic defenses.

Players are not going to want to fly dedicated gunners or escorts for every single hauler just because they may get attacked.

Players are not going to want to sit in their ship for hours watching the radar while their orgmates mine out an asteroid.

I could go on and on, but the core point is that the game mechanics need to be designed around giving people who do not no life the game a chance to have fun and stand a chance in pvp vs those that do.

While I completely understand the need or at least desire for a reset, I wouldn't stick around for it.

The game is glorious, but it's also gloriously incomplete and mostly still broken... from physics, to RDMS to PVP to the "economy".. And especially the economy, which is beyond a joke...  So many designs choices and conscious decisions that can only politely (and I mean this politely) be considered completely retarded have allowed players to skip entire segments of gameplay (the one month voyage to space, anyone?) and create a vast, nay inconceivable amount of wealth (200 L containers frivolously left open to a subordinate?)... NQ have allowed exploiters to roam Scott free and it's very likely they have no idea the full extent of the abuse their systems came under...  Even  offering information fishing expeditions to find the miscreants disguised as "armistices".

I have recently been looking back at my efforts so far and got to wondering, what has it all been for?

It's a question many more people would ask if they were told a full wipe was in the works.

Main thing why all this so relativly easy to do is serious number of orgs leaders so starving on recruits, they accept almost everyone without too much questions. And then very liberal with rights after person talks "friendly" and simulates some help and participation for may be couple of weeks. Even better -- some fake loyalty and adoration of everything done by org and its leader.

Mostly its cynical use not of bad RDMS (yet its horribly implemented too) but super-vulnurability of "aspiring" leaders on dreams to increase their following fast/easy way.

Guys, in all this discussions (that in different forms lasting now for years), you missing 3 important points:

    1) Current generation will not need to last long, only until NQ remake of plantes (~ 3 m / half of year), with this whole world will be renewed.
    2) When planets regened (and all ore restored), they then add Space Mining, that I strongly suspect, will have some renewable mechanic in it.
    3) Then it will be whole new systems eventualy...

Also, to be honest, NQ proved to be relativly "soft and caring" developer for casual player base, so if some critical situation with ore developes, they most likely agressivly intervene to balance it.

All this means realisticly --  there is nothing to fear, some minor scarcitiy is possible, but nothing more.

    Currently Khaos Federation Features:

    Where are we located
We are currently located in the following regions
Alioth (HQ and current manufacturing with plans to move manufacturing)
    Alioth Moon 4 (Mining Outpost
    Madis (Mining Outpost)
with future plans coming soon. All Federation members can choose to setup their private residence within any of our regions free of charge

    Commerce and Trade
Internal Economy which allows our members to buy and sell internally to ultimately reinvest back into the federation rather than the wealth leaving the federation. This also allows Citizens to trade and do services for others within the federation and pay them for their efforts. To obtain Khaos Credits (KC) most sell ores to the federation which allows us to produce the required goods required by Federation or Citizens. Future plans for paid jobs could include Military/ Policing, Logistics, Building and Coding

    Manufacturing and Retail
We Manufacture high quality materials and equipment for sale through our internal economy. Khaos Credits (KC) obtained by completing jobs or selling ores to the federation. With population of the federations growth plans to roll out a retail sector catering to federation members will become more of a reality. This will open up jobs (role play too) for citizens to take part within the community.

    Hey fellow Noveans,

I can see two passionate sides in this argument and some rather provocative stances. So please, to everyone, remember our forum rules and keep things constructive, civil and friendly. Your postings will be just as content rich if you skip the strong language and focus on the statement

Both sides hint at valid arguments. Nobody can force anyone to associate with others just for the sake of production. On the other side, if you chose a path that leads away from civilization, you probably will struggle with supplies and have to do/create/organize more things on your own or accept long travels. At least for now.

A personal note on the topic, not speaking on behalf of Novaquark: as I'd like to see Dual Universe evolve, expand and prosper, I do hope for some more game mechanics in the future that give people new paths to follow. As an example and I don't even know if this is on the table: I hope that at some point there might be a player contract system that lets players complete tasks in order to gain ℏ, elements or other rewards.

I say this because I think statements like the above could steer this thread in more constructive direction. Please join me looking for ways to improve, rather than just to oppose each other

    Thank you!

le_souriceau got a reaction from vertex in How long will it be before we can't catch up?
@vertex nailed it pretty good, but I want to add little bit of my angle.

If you playing alone, duo or in small friend company you never trully planning to expand, than it doesn't matter at all-- you will eventualy hit same "soft" celling as everyone started before. In some areas it will be even easier/faster, because more things are readly available to buy for cheaper/more people willing to enter some sort of deals. Only real difficulty you can encounter with time progression in game world -- relativly less ore and more dangerous trips to it (more pvp ships).

If you playing it org style with real ambition to grow into something, then it (while may sound counter-intuitive) MATTERS EVEN LESS. Here its all about your ability to organize people, keep em, expand and develop human recource, buiding connections. Sure, orgs with "old wealth" still have potential edge, but real question, are they capable to use it? Some, with competent leadership surely invest it right, but many others probably just idly sit on proverbial chests until its irrelevent (by their quiting of game or inflation eaten up "riches").

So, while I'm not always agree how NQ balances game for new/old/harcore/casual/different styles players, overall its still (as trend tracable to future) quite open field to join, without too much of concerns of  "I will never catch up". And its obviously so in just 2 weeks of game start!

2 million what points now? Credits or skill? I'd like to check that for myself - if that's really the case I should be able to find that on their streams. Could you provide a link to one of those streamers please?

Even if that is true however, it doesn't matter that much either. 2 million credits are nothing and 2 million skill points are worth about 2 weeks.

Apart from this the question about "catching up" is pretty much irrelevant for a game like DU. There will always be people leaving the game or take some time off, while new people get in and start at nothing.

Regarding skill: of course you'll have veterans that specialized in many branches - but they'll only be able to execute a few of them at any given time. New players can specialize in certain branches too, which doesn't take forever and they are up to par with those veterans on their chosen field - until some day they accumulate so many points they can consider themselves veterans as well. EVE got a similar skill system and I didn't join at launch there, but still had a feeling of progression and could specialize to take it up with older players.

Regarding money and assets: this is a "civilization building mmo" - there will always be people much more powerful and wealthy than a new or even a seasoned player. Catching up isn't a thing here - at least not through grinding the game mechanics. And if we're not talking about the grind, catching up can come very suddenly by moving into a new position, taking something over or by gathering people around you. There are so many ways to wealth and glory in a game like this - it's not a train that you can miss and then be late to the party forever. You get in the next train and join the community, get to know a few people and maybe climb the ranks.

Tho the last statement doesn't go well with lone wolves - but that doesn't matter, because those players accepted a path of slow progression and are behind by definition compared to those who teamed up to achieve the same things faster as a group.

    tl;dr
What I'm trying to say is this: Don't bother too much with the question of catching up and just try not do envy those who might be farther down the road than you. On the contrary: let yourself be inspired by them and appreciate what the game has to offer and what you can actually achieve too, if you invest the time and/or effort that they did. No matter where they are or how they got there - enjoy the game and enjoy your own progression - because that is part of the experience and fun of DU

I appreciate patience, but this just isn't the case anymore.

Dual Universe uses Amazon's Cloud (AWS), the same core service that powers massive applications like Netflix, which consume thousands of times more bandwidth than DU ever will.

Adding hardware is not time intensive for any reasonably designed stack on AWS. It is slow in the context of responding to spikes in traffic -- but in the order of minutes, not weeks. There's no reason whatsoever why DU can't add hardware beyond not wanting to pay. Autoscaling fleets of servers can be extremely expensive.

These are not the days of old where MMOs run their own servers and have hordes of poor nerds trying to sling up more servers in the dead of night.

If there is a hardware issue, it isn't because Amazon lacks the capacity or they can't add servers quickly enough or their bandwidth is being bottlenecked.

In the context of a product launch, 2 weeks is an extremely long time to not address issues with scalability -- especially with a modern infrastructure design, and especially when one of your core promises is the scale of the universe and the cutting-edge tech you've created to allow them to play on a continuous server.

TLDR: if AWS can run Netflix, it can run DU

If you up to somewhat relaxed gameplay in good company (totaly approved by NMC), follow this plan of action:

    1) Find @Armedwithwings, say to him secret password "PRKL MN"
    2) Recieve blueprint of one of epic starting ships he disigned: at least "The Egg", build it.
    3) Ask what to do next...
