ATMLVE reacted to Anaximander in Collision Damage: Do we REALLY need it?
Uhm.. you seem to confuse localised grids and planetary grids. The Devs do not want collisions, because of the issue with planets constantly rotating.

I made my suggestion on the matter a long time ago. Instead of physics based collisions, add reactor instabilities and overloads, You bump one too many times (or at very high speeds), you explode (as you should), due to your capacitor on your ship overloading, thus exploding. Which meakes larger battleships more stable, by virtue of having multiple capacitors / power cores, that require more crew, with each capacitor even dedicated in one aspect of the ship.

This guarantees that a star-fighter colliding with a battleship at max speed will pop, but it also guarantees that the star-fighter has a huge margin of "bumps" when it lands on a carrier, or a planet, as it goes much much slower (and planets do not move).

Also,as you may think this, you do understand carriers do not actually have to move much in a battle, right? They are dreadnaught sized ships that carry fighters instead of more guns. So yeah, a star-fighter landing on a very very slow moving carrier, is not gonna overrule the bumps mechanic as of speed.

Beyond that, auto-pilots will land your fighter, you won't have to do it manually, at least, not in a FLIPPING military grade star-fighter.

The reasons such a mechanism is needed, is so do not crash land anywhere all the time. I mean, why do I even need a smmoth approach on a planet, when I can simply grind my ship to a halt without having to worry if I explode?

Heck, the Overload mechanism could be even a formula of change in velocity (DV), and how much of a ratio of it a reactor can withstand before it starts Overloading from the strain of the decceleration.

See, the real problem with the collisions, lies in the fact that people think collisions should be about voxels connecting to voxels, and said contacts altering those voxels. That's the part that takes up server RAM, as the server has to calculate collisions for EACH individual voxel.

MY suggestion, only takes into acout mass, decceleration and power core / capacitor "strength".

Which evidentally, is not ultra realisitc, but guess what happens if two metric megatonne battleships collide in space. You guessed it, they evaporate. There's no wreck left behind for the server to have to calculate damage done to voxels.

    Cheers!

Welcome to the new members! I'm sorry to hear that applicants are being turned away; I hope your post will help Aetherios.

I believe the Aether will succeed, and I'm happy I have the opportunity to be a part of it. I hope we continue to see growth, not just as an organization but as fans of the game in general. Happy Holidays everyone!

NovaQuark (the game developers) have said that everything in Dual Universe will be erased at least at the conclusions of the alpha and beta phases. However, I believe that players will be able to keep any constructs in the form of blueprints, which they can then build in later stages of the game. So nothing physical within the game world will be kept.

The lore behind it is that all of the survivors from earth's destruction are in ships heading out into the galaxy to begin a new civilization. During the journey, select people (alpha and beta players) will be entering a virtual reality environment (alpha and beta phases) to test their skills and abilities in a simulation of the real world, to get them ready for the real thing (the game's release). Thus, by the lore, alpha and beta will not actually "happen", and only digital things (blueprints) will remain after the conclusion of the alpha and beta.

I cannot quote the specific reference where the developers state that the world will be wiped after (and possibly during, can't remember for sure) the alpha and beta, perhaps someone else can find that. As for the lore, that's in the Lore Bible here on the forums in the Novark Archives section.

    Also, welcome to the forums!

It's been an interesting month so far - I dare say it's a sign of great things to come.

With two new members and good subjects to talk about, a revamped Forums site and Christmas just round the corner, the spirit of the season is well at work.

The Aether also had the pleasure of welcoming two new members. Needless to say, she's had her hands full and new members are bright stars in the night sky.

We welcome Tatsunobu and Brucie22 to the Aether.

I kind of disagree - surprise, surprise

Yes it should be made....easy is the wrong term....let's say convenient. Mirror mode, creating beams of certain lengths (as proposed but not as long as you want), maybe even a copy/paste thing - all good if done right. What I'm against is a kind of creative mode (not as you thought I mean no resource cost) in the sense of: instantly create the whole (even rough) shape of the ship. This should be actual work. The hard part about building a ship is not the sketch, the hard part is actually really placing the voxels in the right position in order to get a wonderful design. Just look at those awesome SE designs: each one of them is special because of carefully placed elements which work together perfectly. THAT'S the hard part.

Everyone can sketch a ship which looks more or less great with all necessary stuff in it, but only true masters (those who know how to exactly place those voxels) can construct a ship which is in perfect balance of volume, intelligent design and usefulness

ATMLVE got a reaction from Lord_Void in When will the game get more popular?
At E3 2016 when they put out the trailer, I'm sure lots of people were skeptical. Short trailer of a game in pre-alpha by an indie dev team... Everyone's seen that before. Most immediately threw caution tape all over that. The thing was that there was barely anything out there at that time for Dual Universe. Not much info and barely any videos on it.

Next E3 (2017), if NQ puts out another video, it will be a different story. There will be so much more for them to show, and people searching for DU online after they see the video will find a plethora of info and videos, and hopefully lots of alpha gameplay.

I think the alpha will bring in new people but I think an E3 demo (perhaps even live with whoever is playing the alpha at that time) combined with the amount of content there will be on the game by then will really start to bring people in.

Lots of great entries here. Good luck to everyone! The reward for this particular vote is a unique in-game title, correct?

EDIT: Also, I personally feel that hiding the results until the conclusion of the vote would be preferential, if that's possible.

    Hi all

So as promised, here's the entry I was going to submit for Novawrimo round 1 before time and life collided with each other.

On the upside, I took a couple of extra days to have friends proofread, so no spelling mistakes!

    Authors Notes / Glossary:

Anzaki - derived from the old acronym ANZAC (Australian & New Zealand Army Corps), referring the to Armed Forces of two 21st century nation states. The Anzaki were the product of an inter-generational  genetic program designed to produce better soldiers. Originally a culturally homogenous Australian & New Zealand population drawn from the family and members of a large semi-permanent deployment of troops who were effectively stranded and isolated overseas when the governments of those two countries collapsed. The results of Anzaki gene tailoring include improved immune systems and physical health and well being (a way to explain the general lack of sickness and minor injury in MMO's), and notably, an almost complete suppression of the flight reflex, through careful application of transgenerational epigenetic inheritance. To the common person, the Anzaki were renowned for exhibiting virtually no fear in battle, never having retreated, fierce loyalty to their comrades, and surviving at any cost.
Australia - 26th century Australia is largely uninhabitable, largely due to extreme climate conditions. Much of the population that remains is centered on the South East Coast, and around the Perth Metroplex. Port Drum, the southern hemisphere's major launch site for Lunar and in-system traffic is located some 2000km east of Perth.
Genie - Slang term for genetically engineered or tailored people. By international consensus following bioweapon attacks during the 22nd century, such individuals are readily identifiable by the synthetic gene tailoring of pteridine pigment xanthopterin within certain chromatophores called xanthophores located in the iris stoma, resulting in a bright amber eye colour similar to that of the Great Horned Owl.
Tomorrow Men - Slang term for convicted individuals who have been sentenced to military penal unit. Such individuals are traded between governments and corporate interests as assets. They are kept in cyrogenic storage until needed, and then deployed into conflict areas where the loss of life would be considered prohibitive for regular troops. The life expectancy of such individuals is quite low (17 days on average). The use of the term stems from the dark joke that each prisoner's release date is usually listed in a system simply as "tomorrow" (or today + 1), because tomorrow never comes... the_tomorrow_man.pdf

I can't tell if this is a discussion post or an advertisement.

Regarding the former, I agree with you completely, that piracy does not equal griefing. I can't think of anyone here on the forums being significantly outspoken about griefing and pirating being the same thing, but perhaps that's just because I'm never looking.

Thinks are getting tense here, but I think everyone's arguing on the same side. We all agree that a manned and crewed capital ship is superior to the same capital ship manned by a single person. Archonius is merely stating that he wants hard facts, numbers, and details on these things, which there really aren't at this time. No one's convincing anyone of anything more at this point.

No, there's no way of ensuring it can't be for themselves (but we don't see where the issue is there: they have the right to vote for themselves if they want to. All in all, it will be just one vote).

No worries. There will be other Novawrimo contests in the future

    @All:
Here is the list of the participants to the contest.
If you have posted a fan fiction for the contest but forgot to put the tag [Novawrimo] in the title of the thread, please inform us until tomorrow (Friday 16th December) 9.30PM PST. Winners will be announced in January next year: beside the winter holidays coming, it will take some time to read all the fan fictions and come to a decision. Dead Space 3 style hand weapons would be awesome. I used to spend tons of time at the bench trying out all sorts of different weapon combinations... The weapon making and animations they did were my favorite parts of the whole game!

Unfortunately, I don't see NQ going so in depth with handgun mechanics. It doesn't really seem to fit the style of the game; combat will generally be between constructs, and it's definitely not meant to be a shooter. Still, it'd be neat! But again, I don't see personal weapons ever going very deep. Just my guess of course.

Nothing else to add. Simply, there are people who say like it would happen with 100% guarantee and create disinformation in the community.

If to speak about the crew. How big should it be in your vision? How many players need to be in "sub" to cover possible DC/RL (if to make heavy requirements to have a multi crew)? Finally how big should be a ship? Maybe I find 30m ship as huge, but you speak about 3km ship.

Future. Automatic systems. Even nowadays crew become obsolete more and more. That if to speak about realism.
If to speak about game side, re-read ATMLVE messages, don't want to re-write his words.

    Thanks,
