VandelayIndustries got a reaction from CousinSal in How to create exploration.
IMO even as a pvper, the implementation of the DSAT was terrible.  And since you can get asteroids in the safe zone, and they respawn on saturday, as shown there really isnt any need to "defend" them.  Especially if i can just scan and claim T3-T5 tiles in the safe zone and automine.  What this game needs is a legit long range radar scanner.  People often say "oh well space is big"  yes space IN REAL LIFE IS BIG.  But im not playing IRL, im playing a game, and an MMO.  The reason for that is to promote player interactions.  If we had a radar that could "ping" even just 10 su, on a timer, you could actually create real exploration.

Think about this, if your radar has a 1-3min timer to use, and a cooldown, to balance, then once its done it gives you POI of anything that was scanned within 10su (asteroids, npc wrecks, other player ships, anything new added later) but doesnt tell you what it is, and only a general waypoint area to go, now you can go explore find out what it is, onec you get closer than 2su and its in radar range.  This is great for even finding asteroids, you could be 120 su from some outer planet like jago, and found a exotic asteroid.  No one knows you are there.  Unless they already found it, or someone gets within 10su and pings it.  So someone could show up within 10min, or 10hours, or never.  This would lead people to actively go explore more, because even people trying to avoid people, could have real chances to be on an asteroid for hours with no one knowing.  This is good for pvpers because more people would take the risk to explore. and 10 su is a decent balance of not too far, but enough for people to reliably find SOMETHING in an hours gametime.  Right now the current implementation of the wrecks is atrocias (albeit with the best intentions).  But people want to log in and have a chance to actually find content.  People literally spent 3+ hours roamiing aimlessly looking for the wrecks, and find nothing.  How is that engaging? How can I promote that to my friends to come play DU with me?   Conversely, if I say tell my buddies who dont play DU "Yea man, we spent an hour and half and went and explored, and found 1 wreck, and 3 asteroids, which we bookmarked and mined one, and plan to sell the coords to a friend for some % of their take"   During that hour + we actually accomplished something. Not only that but we are out in space, ACTIVELY flying around, scanning, having fun, and could be a possible target, or could be looking for targets ourselves, needing to keep watch of our own scanners and radar.

To me that sounds infinitely better, and like a real game, and something I can look forward to logging in, and accomplishing something with some risk, but also some good rewards, and some fun exploration because you dont know what you will find, or how good the asteroid you find will be.  Maybe its a shiitty basic? Maybe its an exotic with over 100kl of T5.  The fun is in the mystery and the reliable act of knowing that if i spend an hour or so, I will at least find SOMETHING.  Please Please consider these gameplay mechanics and loops NQ.  We as players want to promote the game to our friends but how can I promote "ya i flew around for 4 hours and found nothing but empty space".

VandelayIndustries got a reaction from Shaman in Could this game eventually "kill" Star Citizen?
The year was 2012. I was in a wormhole alliance in EvE online.  The hot topic lately between corp mates was this new game being crowd funded at it was getting a lot of money. One particular guy in my Corp was adamant that Star Citizen would kill EvE when it would be released. Almost 10 years ago to the day. Time flies.

100% agreed. That's why even a 10su radar that "pings" would be amazing.  That mechanic alone could tie in to so much content.  Was the ping another player ship? A wreck? An asteroid? If it is an asteroid it might be a basic, might be an exotic!! Some actual excitement to explore. And if NQ added other content down the road like some anomaly or something, they already got the radar base gameplay so easier to Incorporate it. So much win.

I'm sure some will he mad, not blaming them. But me personally, my decision to continue to play or not has no bearing on a wipe whatsoever, so to me it's a complete non issue. If this next patch vastly improves pvp, and the next few mini patches are good, and they post a small "whats to Come after release" and it seems cool, I will 100% play post wipe. If this next patch sucks ass and they don't wipe, I won't be playing.  Obviously other people feel different but this is just me.

True, but if NQ decides to make shields only go to their current Core size, that would automatically make L cores tankier, with LOW development. its the same thing they did to guns.  That right there would give L cores a leg up in Alien core defense.  Where the objective isnt to kill everyone, its to "hold the grid and win".  Just saying that could happen quick, if NQ so choose to. Not saying they will but it could happen easy and fast if they wanted.

Exactly.  But what it boils down to is what gameplay NQ chooses. Maybe there is better ways, but would take longer to develop I can't say for sure as we all speculate. But the reality is most people seem to want new gameplay options as to how bigger and smaller ships perform, thus creating "roles" for ships in pvp and hauling. Options are what make games like this fun, where many ships/and ship builds can Excell in one area but maybe are bad in others. It's not fun when 1 or 2 types of ships can "do it all". Now sure we can debate how NQ chooses to implement it i.e these new speed changes, but the reality is it seems NQ is on a tight budget and a rush to release and make a final market push to make their game viable and sustainable and profitable.  We shall see if their effort is enough soon.

I do agree with you on some of that.  A lot of it stems from separating pvp from non pvp players and content.  In EVE non-pvp players exist in the same pvp game world as everyone else.  If you undock, you are never safe.  As CCP has stated, once you undock in eve, you consent to pvp.  NQ's biggest problem is they have no idea or way to marry these 2 vastly different gameplay types.  Like you said common goals and reasons for the non pvper to BE IN and risk pvp space.  NQ's approach to saying "if you dont want to pvp thats ok you can have and do everything else in the game" doesnt work when you also try to tack on a hardcore full loot open world pvp system next to it.

VandelayIndustries reacted to Zarcata in What is the largest city / base (Freeport) or spaceport (Utopia)?
There is no good argument in DualUniverse why you should rent an "apartment" from other players. It's just a bubble of some players trying to make sense of their cities or space bases that way.
Any player could just quickly put a space core there as an "outpost or temporary storage". No taxes, no rent, no restrictions from design or anything else.
In general, what do you need a home for anyway? We don't have any roleplay content in the game, we don't need to sleep or eat, drink, charge our batteries, we don't even need air to breathe, since we only consist of data that can actually be uploaded anywhere...whereby the VR limit is complete nonsense again...which contradicts the idea that we can simply upload ourselves after a death or through a planet transfer.
You don't even need your own industry, because there are already enough players who can produce everything and undercut each other on the markets. Even PvP itself is boring, even arenas and battlegrounds in world of Warcraft are more interesting and fun. But hey, we just need a ship for mission packs to get Quanta. This is then taken for reserves to compensate for being shot down by pirates. Or you just build for a few weeks or months until you get to the core limit.
Currently, I'm concerned that the next update is supposed to be the last major update before it's released. Meaning, diverse content to make the game more lively won't be there.

VandelayIndustries reacted to Carnegie in Quality of Live improvement suggestions
    Industrial Suggestions:

    1.
On one of the interviews with NQ, the NQ person was surprised that the host had 1200 transfer units in his factory.  I suspect that number (which seems big to me too) is due to the limits on how many input/output ports exists on containers and industrial equipment.

If the current limit went from 10 to 15 (or 16 if you are a hex kind of guy), then there would be much less need for transfer units. I suppose early on it was part of the design to encourage players to find clever ways around these limitations, but the side effect is extra server load and more complicated factories.

    2.  Add a feature in transfer units to move by a  ratio or percentage of the source containers qty. It would simplify things greatly if one could split the contents between two containers about evenly (or some other ratio) rather than just being limited to an absolute amount maintain limit. Why do I want to do this? I need more than 10 links to the materials inside the container without starving one side or the other.

I don't know if this is possible in Lua, but many people don't have the time or inclination (willingness to deal with debug headaches) to learn a new programming language.

Wasn't there some talk long ago about new tech only applying to new planets?  A wipe would allow them to create a consistent environment.  I can't see them going "Ok - we are production now, but the original solar system is using an older tech to the new one..."

It will remove all the junk and the stuff left in the game once the beta keys expire. As such a wipe will not erase talent point, only return them to the pool, there really is no "level playing field" and frankly that is not an argument anyone who understands why the wipe will happen ever uses as it is not part of the discussion in that regard. It is something a few like yourself keep injecting as you either do not understand the argument or choose to be blind to it.

There would not be a full wipe like we had prior to beta. The world would be reset, constructs removed, quanta reset and talent points returned to the pool. That would leave the advantage for those who participated in beta to be massive and present a great opportunity to rebuild much more efficiently and structural than before.

There is no "levelling the playing field" or "catching up" here as getting to a decent level talent wise is so fast it's mostly irrelevant. It's mostly about trash collection and a big clean-up.

In the end if NQ were to not wipe, they would have come out and said so. Instead, they have very directly maintained that the option remains on the table and that they continue to have "discussions" about it. Knowing NQ-lingo that really only can imply that it's not if, but mostly when which is "being discussed" and frankly, I am very certain that it has been decided some time ago in combination with a set date for release towards the end of this year. There is no reason to withhold information on this if no wipe is planned, there is a strong argument to be made for keeping it indoors when the wipe is coming.

Personally, I could live with them going either way, but I strongly believe they will wipe as it will serve the game better in the end and in the long run. Combined with the very minimal exposure for the game and the small currently existing subscribed player base, a wipe has far more potential benefits than it has drawbacks. It would be a sensible and dare I say justified business decision to wipe at launch.

Given your previous comments on other topics involving things like wanting to be able to warp with aphelia packages, the desire to spontaneously delete your entire ship from the universe (on a thread about using such an option against pirates), or just generally how much you hate pirates, I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that you are posting this less for physics reasons and more for fear of it being used on you by pirates.  While I understand such a point of view, I disagree with it.

Pirates will likely be faster than you after the speed changes even without this device, but unless NQ changes some stuff they will also be stuck using smaller guns than you. A stasis weapon would allow you to pin them down and ensure that when they start losing that fight, they wont be able to run away and will lose their ship.

VandelayIndustries reacted to Gottchar in Missions were poorly implemented, player missions can rarely compete with NPC missions.
I would really like to set up missions to transport things more often, sadly, I can rarely use the mission system.

My missions will compete with the endless supply of NPC missions, meaning if I pay less than a player can get from an NPC mission, I don’t have to bother. NPC missions are
-repeatable, can be done multiple times in one shipment with alts.
-the longer the mission, the better it pays, and the smaller the inconvenience of having to log into multiple accounts, or ask friends to come for the ride.
-the shorter/smaller the mission, the lower the collateral.
    -no limit for litres

Due to this, the player missions are hard to sell:

Long range ore transport: Every ~5 days I ship 4ML from Sicari to Alioth. I would have to set the collateral to 200M for the whole amount (50 per litre), so no newer player can do it. And more established players, if interested in transport, will already do NPC mission which pay better and can be organized better with group or alts. Also, I would have to split the transport into 512kl chunks, and as only 3 missions can be set up at a time, I would need three EXL parcel containers, on both ends, to organize, pack, set up. I would also have to pay upper market cell cost for a heavier ship than mine, +actual reward. So I just do it myself.

Short range heavy transport: No warp cells involved, but still same problems as above. Also, these transports would likely be from the market to my base, which means I need to create the parcels inside the market container, which does not allow to split stacks. If I have more than 512kl of a single type of ore in the market container, it can no longer be used for a mission.

Long range light transport, like schematics: For a small job like just hopping with a warp shuttle to Talemai and back, I could set up a mission, but now the collateral is a huge deterrent. 3M quanta job, for 100M collateral, maybe somebody would still do that. Same job but for 500M or 2B collateral?

Short range light. I just pick it up next time I need to fly light anyway.

I wouldn’t mind outsourcing some work, but the tedium, high price (to compete with NPC missions) and restrictions mean I either ask a buddy to fly it (and I move from container to container via VR) or, in 99% of the cases, I just fly myself.

Adding somethind like trash as exploration is totally meaningless when you first state we can explore entire galaxies, have stargates, etcetera.

Adding some trash in space or whereever and call that incentive to explore is the same as lets say add special cores in space and call it incentive to PvP or add static cores and say that is justification for building Civilization Pillars.

Adding stuff like this to fill a pillar that once had potential just breaks down the game and is not more then adding a mod in space engeneers that places random loot. Know how many mods there are in SE? Please add more serious stuff but i guess that for the serious stuff the server payments will rize and well, thats not going to happen right?
