    This is a matter of appreciation that varies between legal departments of various companies.
    Some are very extreme, others are tolerant to some length.
    As there is no way to know for sure in advance, the best advice we can give is: please don't copy any copyrighted material.
    If you copy something easily recognizable, you take some risk to see it removed, especially if it's from a well known franchise like Star Wars, Star Trek, Stargate, Warhammer 40K, Battlestar Galactica, etc.

    As I see it I would not worry too much. The 'Organizational landscape' will change drastically once it becomes apparent that running an org is not easy and requires RL skills, effort and a _lot_ of time. Many current orgs are fairly loosely knit communities where infighting and general disagreements will cause breakup of some of the bigger ones very soon after the game starts going.
     
    The current framework is mostly a placeholder IMO and while there are a few solid, well organized ones, these are generally specialized and not the dime a dozen 'we will kill you if we want your land and you do not submit' type of which there are too many.
     
    Also it's interesting how so many seem to think that just setting up a military or government style leadership structure will make things work.. A title is just that unless the person holding it understands what it means to bear it.

    @Agecom no, there is only one official currency (quanta). Stabilizing a currency that would work for commerce would be to slow a process otherwise, and we need a fully functional economy right from the start.

    @NQ-Sophon last week's patch broke a few lua scripts (due to some functions being moved from one element to another). In the future, could changes like these be announced in advance, so that we can prepare our scripts before the test?

    @JC I've seen what happens to Minecraft servers with populations of 100-200 people where they are allowed to excavate everything. Absolutely every surface feature is decimated for kilometers from the starting area within weeks. It is conservative to say the DU launch will be orders of magnitude more populated, and mining in DU is much more powerful than in minecraft. Will you implement automatic surface restoration (erosion) algorithms? Suffice to say natural terrain that looks like it was carpet bombed everywhere would not be pleasing new player experience.

    @[PRF] Megaddd it's still in discussion, but we certainly don't want "ore fountains" that are infinite sources of wealth. And damage done to the surface of the planet should be minimal as most ore are deep underground. But we need to test this, and probably come up with many ideas to make it work!

    I to am very excited for DU. I think the progress and development has been a breath of fresh air compared to other games I've seen in development over the years. Novaquark, tries to be realistic about their goals, and aren't afraid to say no, tell it straight, when it comes to what will and wont be in the game. Hoping to get into the game during Alpha so I can make friends, and get to building. Still trying to decide what org I want to commit to, but the Terran Union is at the top of my list of Orgs I would want to be apart of, If I'm accepted.
     
    Other then that, just been working, and playing other games, while daydreaming about DU lol. not much else we can do til release. Greatly looking forward to the Gamescom AMA, I hope they can stream it live with no problems.
     
    P.S. where can I find more info about the Terran Union?

    This thread got hella off topic.  Thank you to those who actually answered my question.  Disappointing, but definitely understandable.  The single server means there must be sacrifices, and this is one of them I guess.

    yea but gamers are a finicky bunch and dont know what an actuall alpha is but hey for 60 you can get into alpha 2 of fo 120 you can get in at some point in alpha 1. Actually i think 120 is alpha 1 access as soon as it opens

    Have to side with you here.  Unfortunately with what NMS did (though they have partially redeemed themselves) and then the mess going on with SC....I can imagine gamers will be brutal with yet another space game and one that is in Alpha.  People in general are very short on patience and understanding and regardless of DU not doing what SC is doing.....it'll more than likely be branded as SC if they lifted NDA for Alpha Footage.

    With the roadmap showing PvP not even coming about until next year...I can see some very brutal thoughts against DU that would probably hurt it more than help (not strictly on the lack of PvP alone but just Alpha state in general.  Unfortunately too many games lately have abused their "Alpha" state to where folks are tired of hearing, "It's in Alpha!"  Though DU looks like they're not clowning around like so many other games......I can imagine folks not being willing to hear, "It's still in Alpha".  Then don't even let any kind of delay happen with this new roadmap because folks will immediately paint it as SC though it's nothing alike.

    I mean I do agree that yes we should at least show videos and livestreams of the alphas. But I do have a bad gut feeling that many people will quickly judge it regardless of the many disclaimers, that can look bad for potential new players. But that’s just me thinking.

    Its disappointing, but its by no means unheard of for a game following the traditional test phases to remain in a NDA state while in alpha, NQ is keeping its promise to the supporters though in that they will be letting anyone who backed during KS to join the alpha in waves. The reasoning for the NDA remains the same, and imho its for the best given the landscape of the gaming community at large.

    @0something0 What is you're definition of a neutral Org? because it seems like you may be mixing up two entirely different concepts, I'm just trying to understand.
     
    From what I've noticed, there are Neutral Orgs, and then there are Apolitical Orgs, and those aren't really the same thing.

    Question: Damage: "What will the damage model be like? Will collisions damage ships? Will weapons blast holes in the voxel structure or will ships just have a health percentage?

    Answer: That way damage is gonna be implemented most likely in construct vs construct, is that we'll use the fact that every voxel is editable, so you could actually "edit" a hole in it. "an area of destruction." So we will implement a way to select the place where you want to shoot, then you shoot. Based on stats and other skills and the type of weapon damage that you use and the types of protections and the type of materials and all sort of things, there we'll be an amount of damage that happens to the ship. We may try to aggregate the overall level of destruction to give you a visual feedback so that you have an idea of a percentage of destruction, but it would be purely informative. 

    Things will actually be destroyed, or things will be deactivated if you loose an engine or if you loose a certain weapon. It will just cease to be operational in your construct. So this is aiming to being very realistic. 

    What we want to have is that collisions between constructs will actually create damage, we could do it technically, but the idea that in terms of gameplay, we don't want people to build some kind of torpedo ship and just slam ships over each other and I don't think this is going to be a great addition to the gameplay but it will certainly be a great addition to the load on the servers, so we favor, rather than that, we favor missiles that will formally be implemented and that will not actually involve physical objects flying. But again the usual "lock and fire" mechanism with the stats behind the scenes."

    Have you seen the average org recruiting texts? Claiming land by force if needed, enforcing the will of the org leadership and 'those not with us are against us and will be subdued' There is very little intent to work together and build an actual society and civilisation for most of these.
     
    You also obviously either do not or choose to not understand what I am trying to get across.. It's fine and yes, I see no point in trying to make it more clear than I have.

    Sure, I get that. The point I am making is not that there should not be PVP, that NQ has not laid out their idea of where PVP can occur or how it will work (to an extent). 
     
    The point is that I believe NQ has a different vision as to what place PVP has in the game. The game does not revolve around conflict, combat is a means available to resolve disputes which can't be resolved otherwise much like I see and hope wars in RL are. I get there are those who wish to see DU turn into a battlefield asap and intent to do what they  can to make that happen. I feel those will basically destroy the vision NQ has for the game and frankly take away from it what may well be the differentiation DU can bring.
     
    From my perspective it is this what makes NQ decide where a mechanic can or should not be allowed to impact performance of the game overall. I could obviously be mistaken about this but I believe NQ has a more positive vision for NQ than 'I shoot you because I have a weapon and so because I can'
     
    There's already too many warmongering and too many organisations with only one purpose and one thought on how to grab and control as much territory they can get their hands on. And arranging mutual beneficial agreements and alliances are not part of that for them.
     
     
    And before anyone goes and rips the above out of context.. all of it is IMO and not anything I claim or know will happen. It's a shame I have to make sure this is clear but I guess it is what it is.

    No they don't need to tell anyone at this point.
     
    We are both guessing as to how PVP will be implemented and/or evolve based on our preference. While I do not agree with your assumptions, I do not discard them and you should not discard anyone elses untill NQ delivers their implementation of PVP.

    The idea of PVP being a main driver in DU is in my opinion going against what NQ has communicated as their vision and direction for the game. 
     
    The  quote plastered across the post above only implies PVP being a possibility outside safezones. It has no bearing at all on the place, purpose or direction PVP will go. Some seem to think/expect/hope/pray it will be the pivot point of the game. Others see it as a tool in the array of options to settle disputes, preferably when all others are exhausted. None of these currently have any legitimate claim to be correct since we simply do not know. As such discarding one you do not expect as having no standing is presumptuous at best.
     
    But this is really besides the point of this thread. The point here is that in my opinion and from comments made by NQ I believe that their intention is to not implement any possible performance impacting mechanic unless it is crucial to the game. It's why there is no wheels, rotors, pistons and/or collision (damage) planned for now.

    So while most people have said they will play alone at the beginning, they believe that most other people will play in groups.
     
    Interesting, it seems that people are pessimistic about their own solo situations. The appearance is that most people are in groups, it could be that the exact opposite is true. 
     
    My view is that we will see more organic group play situations unfold, where solo players naturally socialize and start to work together over time eventually becoming groups of their own.
     
    I imagine I'll meet people in the game along the way and make some friends that way. There will be plenty of opportunity to at least.
