I'd prefer the EVE system. If you're not aggressed, insta-byebye, if you are aggressed, some modest timer until you go poof. Anything beyond that gets casual unfriendly, and you want those people, since they're going to make the majority of the playerbase, which you obviously want to be and keep as large as possible for the game to survive longterm.

Well once stargates are introduced you (as you're obviously uninterested in long travels) you can either stay in the starting system with some 15+ planets or build a stargate to reach another system.

Reaching another star should be hard AF and either you invest time by flying there for days (advantage: no one knows you're going there) or you build an insanely expensive stargate with your org (advantage: you're instantly there and can charge others for using it).

The starting system is INSANELY huge, alioth alone has 50.000+ tiles. If the other planets are similar, then there is enough space to explore and buildI on.....not to mention asteroids and moons

Some players in the community have already said they want their gameplay to be like this. imo you should be able to spend days flying through space to get to a far off planet, but that doesn't mean everyone's going to do it. Most people won't do it unless there's a good reason to.

You can't make up other people's minds for them. If that type of game play isn't fun for you, don't do it. But you can't tell people what is or isn't fun to them.

And if there's a super ultra-rare ore that you need for crafting and it's only in the Korpadorp galaxy that's 5000000 SU away, then pay someone to go get it for you, because someone is going to be willing to go get it.

well that's exactly NOT what DU is aiming for. You have normal engines, FTL engines (way faster for interplanetary flights, but still need days to weeks to reach other systems) and warp gates for instant travel.
Problem with a "hyperspace drive" with no entry point: as you said, pirates won't be able to catch you - true. But it's also the other way around. YOU can't catch pirates/an invading force either....that'd just unbalance the game

    Hi everyone,

    @namco:

As you are supposed to have read the forum rules before posting, please respect them.
If you don't know where to find them, here is the topic.

    Thank you for your understanding.

    @gyurka66, @Aesir & @namco:

Regarding "ramming ships", it's not planned to implement such mechanics, for two reasons (and not just one):
    1) This is not properly scalable (at least with current hardware tech & bandwith standards).
    2) This would cause game balance issues.

    To keep it simple:
We will only implement mechanics that are scalable and that can be balanced properly.
We won't implement anything that couldn't be scalable when applied to thousands of constructs and/or people concentrated in a small area. Unfortunately, Physics applied to voxels are among the things that enter this category. So no ramming ships.
We won't implement anything that could be abused for griefing or unbalanced gameplay. Even if the technical obstacle mentioned above is solved, it's already well known that some people will install some engines on some big rocks and will use it as cheap mass destruction weapons with little to no solution to protect against, with no risk taken for the aggressor. We won't implement game mechanics that unbalance the "risk vs reward" concept. So no ramming ships. About the "why cpu is used, why not gpu?".
Yes a lot of things are calculated by gpus nowadays, physics included... when it's related to 3D meshes.
However, everything related to voxels are still (mostly) calculated with the cpu, and this includes physics applied to voxels. That's why it's necessary to have a decent cpu, with AVX support. If new generations of gpus start to be more "voxel friendly" then it might change some aspects of the problem, but for now it's just wishful thinking.

Also keep in mind that servers have a cost, and the servers we need are not cheap.
Some games can be hosted on servers that aren't really expensive. Unfortunately Dual Universe doesn't enter in this category.
Even if adding gpus was a viable solution, the cost should remain reasonable if players don't want to see the monthly subscription rise accordingly.

As this idea has been discussed several times, with the same answer, this thread is going to be locked.

    Best Regards,
    Nyzaltar.

First of all, the game servers will be wiped before main launch.

As for the tutorials covering current politics and such, that's just not NQ's job. There will be plenty of things on the internet that will tell you everything you will need to know at the time. Same goes for travel time and distances, the most NQ needs to do for that imo is maybe a current distance between planets (Sorry guys, cant remember if they change or not) on a system / star map IF they implement that. Newspapers would also fall into the category of not NQ's job and a thing that will come about in various forms on the internet anyways.

You don't need an in game communications capable of coordinating ~3000 players, things like discord and teamspeak CAN be used for that through groups, roles and different channels, i would like to see you explain how they couldn't. If discord integration is supported, then you can change voice channels from in game as well. An in-game radio communication system would just add extra unneeded complexity, as well as meaning the devs have more stuff to work on that they don't 100% need. Also, there is no way that an empire would have no way of communicating with it's members if an in game comms system went down. Any organisation that has got as big as you are saying wouldn't be sane if they only relied on an in game thing that CAN be disrupted over an external thing that CAN'T (excluding alts and traitors/defectors here) be disrupted. That leads me on to how 'hacking' and spying to disrupt will exist anyways even if an in game thing wasn't implemented, through those alts and traitors and all that stuff.

    Hi guys,

    As @Glowtape and @NanoDot said, yes :

    - We stick to the script: revamp of the Crowdfunding Portal is work in progress and for now, everything is well
    - When future packs will be available, they will grant access to Alpha 2, which means that they won't give an immediate access to the game.

Detailed planning for future test sessions will be communicated in the coming days, so thank you for your patience and understanding.

    Cheers,

Names are just a branding tool to sell your construct / accurately describe it.

The standard will emerge naturally. Trying to sell a small fast ship with close range guns as a "Battle-cruiser" probably won't go over so well for the person selling it.

The more complex the crafting process becomes, the greater the need for trade and logistics, and the greater the opportunity for additional players to enter the production chain.

All those sub-assemblies have to be manufactured, stored, bought and sold and ultimately moved around in the world (logistics).
The various tiers of manufacturing may require varied skill specialisations and industrial elements, which will stimulate the need for interaction and co-operation between players.
A wide variety of traded goods stimulates the economy and spreads money around.
The more players involved in the production chain, the greater the competition, which inevitably leads to lower prices for everything (EVE is a fine example in this regard).

A deep crafting process also allows for richer game play, as each step in the process can possibly be used to influence the quality and volume of the eventual end product.
A deep crafting process also paves the way for a substantial R&D system.

As a player that loves the crafting and industrial side of games, I would be hoping for MORE complexity in this area, not less !

how wouldn't this be emergent gameplay?

As nano already said: you need logistics for production, you can't do big projects alone (as you need help from others to mine different resources, produce different subsystems and THEN assembling the finished element).
I come from eve and I hated every bit of production there - research blueprint, buy resources, ship resources there (your outpost, POS, station), press start. Yeah. Boring AF.
Then I got into the production of T3 cruisers and this was way more interesting:
    - buy resources from moons (or get a moon yourself)
    - buy resources from wormhole space (or get them yourself)
    - buy normal resources (ores)
    - buy special reverse engineering artifacts for each of the 4 subsystems + the hull
    - combine moongoo+normal resources to get hybrid components
    - combine hybrid components + wormhole resources to get T3-subsystems
    - reverse engineer the hull
    - assemble the ship

This was very interesting (and after a time even that was a little boring, because you got better in it) as it demands your full attention while doing stuff. Moreover it was emergent gameplay as there are more than 50 resources involved - and when you know (intel!) that certain alliances will change their stock doctrine to T3 cruisers....well then you better get some moons. Or buy bulk materials of other stuff.

I'm all in for even more complicated systems as it makes gameplay more deep. JC put it this way: "DU is easy to learn, but hard to master" - and that's what I want to see.

    As Vorengard said earlier
Which isn't true, because collision against the environment and constructs work in exactly the same way.

Clearly we arn't talking about 'voxel to voxel collision' and 'dynamic modification of voxels on collision' here.

Even if Vorengard meant to say that 'voxel to voxel collision is occurring against the environment but not against other constructs', that also isn't true; not only did Nyz say that they wern't doing that, but there's no evidence to support that that's how it works.

Ship colliding against ship results in ship bouncing of ship with no damage at this stage of the game. So ramming tactics are pointless against ships at this stage of development.

NQ is already doing the physics collisions for constructs. They have a video of a spaceship landing on a space station from 2016.

Adding in a flat damage calculation wouldn't require any more physics calculations to be done, because it's already happening. So the load of adding collision damage would be pretty negligible.

Personally I don't care one way or the other if they decide to add damage to collisions or not, but it wouldn't create a performance issue for the server.
