Also for those interested, there is a very highly acclaimed book written by the same people that made the language itself, called "Programming in Lua". The latest edition is the 4th edition. You can also find the last versions for much cheaper.

WARNING: Do not search for a pdf version of the book. There is a pdf version available for free, but of course it is illegal. Again, do NOT search for the pdf version of the 4th edition, or you will find the free illegal version.

The point is, that empires will have their hubs, capitals, etcetera and querry worlds. Imperialism costs. Storeing those minerals will be a logistics thing. To store minerals, you need space, and that space better not be near the borders to a hostile faction That's the point of sovereignities. Also, trading routes. If you have a strategic point, you'll be able to add tolls to it. Those tolls add up to more money for your faction.

A capital of a faction located far behind enemy lines, is the kind of place where the builders and industrialists will have fun in tournaments for PvP, while a shitstorm will be raging in the borders, were PvPers wil lbe clashing to keep borders safe.

Regardless of the system used it should just be universal throughout the whole game and only use that one system. Would be rather clunky and awkward if you have some players using one system and some players using another, just one system and that's it.

Hi Raptor Jesus and welcome to the forum.

While we can understand this organization has been created with fun in mind, this organization is not legit for several reasons:
    - Creating an organization referring to people existing in real life (even in a funny way) is not allowed ("Jay Cee").
    - Creating an organization referring to religion existing in real life (even in a funny way) is not allowed (Name "Jesus" with a clear christian connotation behind).
    - Moreover, making an organization to vow a cult to a living person (even in a funny way) is not allowed ("Church of Jay Cee").

We can totally understand that these rules may appear pretty harsh, too serious, but these are the rules to avoid any unecessary conflicts or controversies and they should be respected.
Therefore, this organization will be deleted soon and we ask you to change your display name.
To make this perfectly clear, we will update both forum rules and community portal rules soon.

    Thank you for your understanding.

    Best Regards,
    Nyzaltar.

In the video just released we saw that there was a button with a getState(), but not the door. Every item in the game should have a getState() function. Also every item should have tags and a list so I can do something like "close all exterior doors of the ship", "is there any door open?", etc.

I think this would be some what difficult to implement. I believe the day night cycles are not going to be super long. Also I would assume that depending on the planet and location in space the time of day may not matter to much in regards to if its day or night in game.

SimonVolcanov reacted to Vorengard in Does Community Content Belong on the Wiki?
My only problem with this approach is the unnatural advantage it gives to those organizations. There's huge amounts of psychological research that indicates that name recognition has a huge effect on how people view other groups, what they buy, who they trust, and many other aspects of human interaction. This is why major corporations spend hundreds of millions of dollars just to put their name on a new stadium; because every time anyone mentions that stadium, they're inadvertently building brand recognition, which has a demonstrable effect on sales.

Therefor, by identifying certain organizations as "major" on the wiki, we would essentially be validating those orgs to the community. New players would be more strongly drawn to join these groups. People would be more likely to buy ships and products from these groups simply because they've heard of them before. The community itself would, to some extent, view these organizations more highly because they've been arbitrarily identified as "important". This would put smaller groups at a serious disadvantage.

Think about it: you're a new player cruising the market with absolutely no idea what to buy and you see two ships in your price range. One is an unfamiliar ship built by some no-name industrial corp with 6 members, and the other is a mass-market design from some major organization who's name you've seen around a few times. Even if the indy design is slightly better and more affordable, most people will buy the brand they've heard of, because their subconscious tells them that must be better simply because they've heard of it (after all, if it's good, why haven't I heard of it?).

Obviously this is going to happen no matter what we do, but I don't think that's a line the wiki should be drawing, and definitely not before the game has even launched. The point of a wiki is to help people learn the game, not to advocate for one group or another, even indirectly.

Perhaps we need some sort of of specialised group of players who are interested in working on a separate record of the games history and the orgs within it ... Some sort of Historical Society ...

Then again we could all just draw our bases, ships and organisations on paper, role-play through chat or forum and save around 10-15€/month for not needing to pay DU when it comes out.

Guns and weapons in DU don't work the same as they do in most other games. How specifically weapons as a whole will function is not completely finalized, but if they will be able to hit ground targets (including the ground itself) from space is something that would be weapon-specific, so there's no way to know yet how feasible it is. We would need more information on the mechanics of weapons, as well as how far from a planet you can be before being able to load it's surface features.

And no, the complete destruction of an entire planet has been directly addressed as being impossible.

As for ships damaging terrain... That's still up in the air-ish. The developers have said that collision damage will not be in the game due to server stress, but a fair point is that air traffic and landing will be a complete mess when someone can impact anything they want at 1000 km/hr with no repurcussions. You asked how the servers would be able to handle all this stress... Well they wouldn't very well if people are launching death stars at planets with collision damage.

Hi Neolithic,   Most of your questions can find an answer if you read the FAQ and all explanations available on the Kickstarter page. While the Kickstarter campaign has ended almost everything regarding the Founder packs of the Kickstarter campaign remain true for the Post-Kickstarter Founder packs (minus exclusive Kickstarter rewards). So please, read everything there.    As for the "unusual" questions for the highest Tier - Packs:    - Can I start a family with a member of the Novaquark team?  Nope, you can't start a family with one or several members of the Novaquark team. That's not part of the deal.   - What does it really mean to spend a day or half day with JC and/or the team?  It means you can follow the daily life of the studio and discuss with Novaquark staff about Dual Universe for the time described in the pack. Nothing extraordinary here: it's a kind of reward that has already been seen several times in highest tiers of other crowdfunding campaign. Note: a full day is not 24h but a full working day.   - What if Novaquark staff is being attacked?  Anybody could be attacked. No one is safe. It takes courage from getting out of the bed every morning. It's part of life. If you want more details regarding the answer to life, the universe and everything, we suggest to meditate on the number 42 or try to find the supercomputer Deep Thought.    - What if Novaquark is hacked?  Same answer as for the question above.   - What if a DU Secret is exposed?  Those participating to a DU secret will be only aware of the secret they are involved in. Moreover, there will be a NDA on that topic. If someone want to blew up the DU secret he/she's involved in, he/she will be in for legal problems, without counting how he/she will be perceived by the community members, who will most likely not see this with a good eye. Not a very smart move and a very expensive joke, but that's just our opinion.   Best Regards,
    Nyzaltar.

SimonVolcanov reacted to jintzy in Random thought - Communication lines? Antennae?
A thought just occurred to me... if we will have scripting, and the scripts only execute while you are around... what about some kind of an implementation for line-of-sight antennae to run scripts?

So for example if we have a space station in orbit (if it were to in fact need to orbit as it sounds like they may) then it would not run remote actions while it is out of sight from the hq "city" for example.. what if we had the server run scripts remotely based on antennae line of sight? This could open up mechanics for e-warfare and deep intelligence as well... or deep-space networks for your org and possibly "renting out" bandwidth to other organizations... possibly hacking an enemy script as it is transmitted to a remote vessel.

I know that's out there, but I can't help but wonder how they will tackle the scripting configurations, or what we will be able to control remotely for example. Probably something that will come added later on.

I could probably explain better what I have in mind but it's not a well developed thought.

SimonVolcanov reacted to Anaximander in Need some clarification about the alpha.
This is not "Early Access". This is an Alpha test..

Alpha tests are usually staged. Usually devs will ask players to congregate in one place. Or log out and relog. That's what Alpha tests are.

The "MVP" or Minimum Viable Product (what Early Access games like Empyrion or Space Engineers are in essence) is where the Beta phase starts. Alpha is not about "playing the game before the others". That's just what shit game devs did for excusing their terrible game.

So no, if you hoped to play the game 2 years before anyone else, you will be thoroughly disappointed. I wouldn't be surprsied if the first month was simply bug-fixxing on login screens, or stress tests with players running in one specific location on the map. Sure, the Devs may elect to go for "here's the building part of the game in Alpha", but still it will be full of glitches and bugs, that's what Alpha is for, hunting down bugs and polisihing the turd that's a game after pre-alpha developement and up until Beta.

And yes, real Alphas are in stages. Alpha 1 would have buildng, so devs can focus on THAT aspect of the game and polish any bugs on it. Then they would move to flying ships, then on w/e else there is. They COULD hot-drop all the features they developed so far, but don't expect their priority list to match the individual's priority list. If flying crafts has bugs, tough luck, until the building bugs are all hammered out, there won't be any bugfixxing done on those.

You know, otherwise you are Space Empyrion Citizen game, going 6 years into an Alpha due to a scattershot of a developement phase and no prioritiies on bug-fixing.

I have faith on JC, he's an engineer, engineers like doing things in a proper manner. Like for example, building the game as an MMO and the net-code coming first, rather than as an afterthought (glares at Space Empyrion Citizen). So I guess the Alpha will be done in stages. Not long ones, like monthly additions on top of each other or even weekly.
