Yeah sorry man, we Americans are pretty stubborn about English... Which sucks by the way. Debris? Thought? Receipt? Common man.

By the way, welcome to the forums! I do believe there is some material on Dual Universe in French; a long presentation by JC (the head of NQ) comes to mind. I'll see if I can find it for you.

EDIT: Yeah here you go, this video is (I think?) on Dual Universe, and is (probably) in French. I don't speak French, thus I don't actually know. But the projector has Dual Universe on it.

I added something he did not, along with wording his post in a completely different way, and clarifying the basic point to make it more clear. In any case, my reference to your post a slight joke, as saying that something is both superfluous and unnecessary is both of those things in its own right as the inclusion of the second word defines itself. In addition to a joke, it was also something less friendly than that as your post contributed absolutely nothing to anything except your own post count, something you are notorious for.

I personally feel that combat will be something that has to be done, in order to test it with lots of players. Combat will be an important part of the final game, and as such I think it's important that active forum members participate in it at some point, if not at least in a mutually respectful and organized manner.

Stealth would definitely be an awesome addition, adding a whole new way to play the game, and also possibly make logging out safer. Also, it would be good for solo players who would like to hide their stuff. Of course there would be negative effects to using it; most likely you would be revealed upon using anything that consumes more than a little bit of energy.

ATMLVE reacted to NQ-Nyzaltar in Windows or a way to making voxels transparent
    Hi there,

In the near future, windows will be available under the form of decorative Elements.
However, implementing voxels made from a transparent material, nothing is clear planned at the moment in the roadmap, so if it's implemented, it will be most likely after the official release.

The challenge of making transparent voxels functional enough to use it for windows: Developing this type of materials to the point of being able to make windows of custom size, with a perfect transparency with no blur or deformation when whatching something placed on the other side of the windows is not an easy task. And it will cost a significant amount of development time. So as always, we will concentrate first to core mechanics and mandatory content before starting developing transparent materials that could be used in an industrialized way.

In any case, we will keep you informed about the evolution on this topic when we will have fresh news about it

    Best regards,
    Nyzaltar.

ATMLVE reacted to yamamushi in A LUA "Core Unit Emulator" Tool for New Programmers
First, and most importantly, this isn't an official NovaQuark project, and I don't have any idea what the interfaces in the actual game will look like, I'm basing most of this off of the LUA Dev blog and my knowledge of how C/C++ bindings are exposed to LUA. If they want me to change the name of this I'll be happy to. Secondly, I have no idea where this topic belongs so I'm posting it here in General. I think we need a programming-related subforum but that likely won't happen until Alpha at the soonest.

Over the Holidays I was thinking about tools I could work on now that might be of some interest to people out there. Things like a ship crew scheduling app, a wiki for programmers, a timeline site keeping track of DU events, a ship delivery scheduling utility, etc. Ultimately, however, I kept coming back to this idea, as it would help me while learning a new language for my job and it would help people who don't know much about LUA (or programming in general) start to wrap their head around what it might be like in DU (as well as help some of those AI-projects out there).

I came up with the idea to create a Core Unit "Emulator" as a standalone web service that people can target with LUA scripts.

I'll try to explain what this looks like...

A programmer would set up LUA on their computer, install the LUA sockets module, as well as copy a piece of code into their own projects that would bootstrap them into being able to communicate with a server over the net.

From there, function calls into an object would act as calls to a "Core Unit", which under the hood would really just be some socket communications going on to a server doing all of the actual work.

From the perspective of a programmer, they get access to various details about a ship (speed, velocity, pitch, yaw, rotation, etc) that they have to adjust to meet a set of parameters (per round) after a simulation is run. So your scripts would have to account for things like losing an engine, running low on fuel, turbulence, etc. and ultimately get the ship into a given set of passing parameters within a given period of time.

Alternatively, I could write a standalone program that you use to run your scripts against, it doesn't particularly matter to me if it's a remote service or not.

How does this help new programmers? It would give the ability for people to try writing LUA in a way that resembles what LUA programming in games is actually like.

It won't be what Dual Universe is exactly like, none of us have the ability to write something like that because we can't know what the interfaces actually are. However, it will give you enough experience in LUA to be able to adapt what you learn very quickly. Ultimately it comes down to having a set of elements giving you information via function calls, processing that information, and being able to do things with said elements via other function calls. If you can get around that basic concept then you'll be in a much better position overall.

It would give people an excuse to start learning LUA now, but it won't be very "fun" or realistic, and you'd have to use it knowing that it's not like Dual Universe at all. There probably wouldn't really be graphics either, you'd be flying by sensors only...

I'd even love some help building it on the server side, which I'm currently doing in Golang because I have to learn it for my job. It's not super difficult to program in, but it would certainly be cool to have a helping hand on programming the actual physics side of things. I just don't want to do it all myself, although things like this tend to go that way.

All in all, I'd be willing to help people learn LUA along the way as well, provided you have some knowledge about computers already. You could easily take what you learn and apply it to other games that are scripted through LUA as well (WoW is one of them).

Who would be interested in even using something like this?

I guess I should make a video explaining all of this, as this wall of text is probably too verbose.

What is really fair, and what is really the penalty here? I suppose what isn't fair is the fact that we, as humans, are all different from one another, and that the penalty is that one will not find solutions to ones problems if one does not so much as attempt to be creative and solve ones problems in the first place. I mean, can they not befriend someone who can script? Or, can they not take part of the economy, and purchase the services of someone who can script? Is it not realistic that factions will have different people, with different set of skills, and that this could, and most likely would result in secrecy, spying, and feuds between factions; in short, politics, which Dual Universe has advertised for a long time?

Either you pay on a monthly basis or you earn enough ingame cash to buy a DAC from another player and use it. So essentially you can play for free if you make enough ingame money.

No, F2P is no option here because of the single shard server
No, B2P is no option here because of the single shard server and the resources your character needs (server side) each month

We want quality gameplay with good mechanics and good gameplay and expansions, so P2P is the only viable option here

That is for the Alpha. That's how we'll be scripting in ALPHA, not the actual launched game afaik. And yeah, creating an interface for Lua scripting is putting the cart before the horse, when the devs haven't tested what should or shouldn't be enabled in the scripts for the game. Or, what consitutes OP if left unchecked in the scripts layout. All those things need to be nailed down before they make an interface for it.

ATMLVE got a reaction from Serpentine in How does war work?
I would say in order to command respect, a large organization would let another org know they are going to attack before they actually do it. If they don't, since they are a large organization everyone will see it and know what happened. Lots of other smaller orgs will see that and may wonder if they are next... That large org will become unpopular and probably make enemies just by treating everyone else with arrogance. So in the best interests of the longevity of a large and powerful organization, I think it would be a smart move and we could probably expect to see that. On the other hand, smaller orgs might not care so much about things like that, and indeed they wouldn't really need to.

So yes, I think we could expect to see declarations of war, but more commonly with famously large orgs.

I've never been a fan of people who make straight-up carbon copies of ships someone else has already made; when I see Star Wars ships on the front page of Space Engineers, I remark at the lack of imagination (and I made a workshop page in the game basically advocating against this). However, taking inspiration for ships, which is what a lot of other people do, is a great idea because you can take something cool from one or two ships and then take off with your imagination. There is an awesome collage of ships someone made, again for Space Engineers, which I've looked through before, not only for inspiration but just because all of the screenshots are awesome. I know some people here will enjoy looking through them. Credit where credit is due, I had nothing to do with their creation. You won't be disappointed!

There is also a procedural ship generator I came across before, where you can put in any string of characters as a seed and it will generate a ship for those characters:

I'm searching for it now, can't find it at the moment, but in an interview of sorts JC of NovaQuark said that originally, scripts won't be something accessible through an interface in-game, but rather you'll have to edit it outside of game, then put the code in a specific folder within the games files. This is because creating an interface for the game takes effort and is unnecessary if it can be done without it, so it won't be focused on immediately.

So yes, that would be awesome. Especially if there were multiple types of terminals (something like that one Space Engineers mod, if you know what I'm talking about), even though they all have the same functionality. Would love to see this, but as far as official word, it won't come immediately.

ATMLVE reacted to Anaximander in Piracy != Griefing
in my opinion, as long as the whole poop-fest doesn't spill in the real world, it's not harassment, which is the only thing NQ should intervene in.

Blowing up a ton of ships or even an entire space station, that's just emergent gameplay. Spewing a sewer's worth of a vocabulary to someone for blowing your ship up  or spewing a sewer's worth of slurs to someone because you blew their ship up, is harassment and should be punished.

Blow up ships, just don't be uncivilised. That's the fine line between piracy and griefing. In EVE, I have been blown up quite a few times by pirates, I never bothered sending a message and even when they started to strike a convo as of the battle, I maintained a civilised approach and discussed the fight which I lost or won.

There's a difference between being a ruthless pirate and being a vicious person by trying to inflict agony through humiliation of someone witth insults.

And that is exactly what I wrote. This is a mess. Thousands of organizations, all in one category, all-in-one. Who is who? Where religions? Where alliances? Where political structures? Where fan clubs? MESS!

Or maybe you find fan club, join it because you like something. But in next day this fan club (some members) raid your base because they can use your data and spawn on your base freely. We can speak about RDMS, yeah, but if (! if !) that system will cover a lot, it will be extremely complicated, which mean many players will ignore it.
Yes, this could be accidently done or sabotaged (which is fine for gameplay). But then your defense just ignore targets, because they are "Fan Club" which is equal to alliance or clan. Simple example, there could be many different cases of abuse of the system.

More than 95% (yes, forum members are a very very very very small minority) of players won't read forums and deeply learn this system. For the majority, it always will be "Clans", not any forum fantasy structures.
Open lists of "Religions", "Political Structures", "Fan Clubs" and other will open doors for these majority because it will be easier to understand what is what. If I'm a new player and want to join to any political system, I can easy to find all open political systems and join them. Player friendly system.

Limited opportunities are way to reduce the amount of abuse (and this is very important for new players). Want to create political structure, you create it. You get all tools necessary for that activity. Sorry, but I find really silly if "Clan" has same opportunities as random "Fan Club" or "Religion" (like in the example above, especially since anyone can join these last groups).

The whole system requires massive global control.

    Thanks,
