PvP needs a long way to go, but you are wrong. the old way was terrible.  Absolutely the worst pvp i ever played in any game.  At least right now ships actually died.  And if beta launched with pvp how it is right now, we woulda been way better off, and retained way more people.  And now with speed changes coming soon to help Smaller cores get into range to use their weapons, the game has a chance to keep progressing to be better.

Ya you just put down a mining unit and visit it like once every 3 days to calibrate or something. The only "hand mining" is if u visit asteroids.  Their database couldnt handle all the digging or whatever, too expensive.

Well im just done with Voxel building stuff, I dont see the appeal.  Maybe sometime down the road when things get better with technology.  But as i see DU and Starbase think that the building is the main part of the game, and that just seems to bring out a niche amount of people.  And forget to make an actual game around it.   Then on top of that I hear arguments from people tell me "then just buy a ship from someone!". Ok thats great in all, but then what do i do with those bought ships in DU. As nothing looks appealing.  And AND AND, if that is your suggestion (which ive been told by multiple people) then maybe building shouldn't be the main part of the game.   I would love to be proven wrong and have DU go to release and launch and have a healthy player base and continue to grow, but the reality is I dont see that.  They dont focus on fun, and their tech really doesnt work.  Yes pop is low because of the wipe talk, but reality is it was bad even before that. now its just 'really bad'.

NQ wasnt under NDA thats not how it works.  NQ can say what they want it was the backers who were under NDA.  Thats why you couldnt stream, post screen shots, youtube, etc.  And it was hubris of NQ thinking they could then separate the community and it would work.  YES lets take 2 of the most different playstyles ever, and place them in the same game world.  Thats why we are where we are right now and the game will continue to be worse and worse.

    I don't agree.

I think the only technology worth anything is the voxel tech -- the voxel to mesh algorithms and the voxel editors.

As far as I know, NQ didn't develop technology to make single-shard a possibility.

This technology was already viable because of how cloud-based infra works, and NQ has famously leveraged AWS to do this (vs. trying to build their own stack as some other companies do).

This idea that it's one server isn't true -- it's still many servers working in a cluster, with instances going in and out of the cluster as needed.

Power consumption isn't the issue, because that's not how AWS charges. CPU, memory, and read/write ops on a database like Dynamo is where things get really expensive. AFAIK AWS hasn't drastically raised prices recently (if that's not true please LMK, it'll affect my day job lol).

They over-leveraged these easy-to-use services early on, then realized it was too expensive...because NQ is the exact opposite of an "expert" in server tech. They made really obvious mistakes that many first-time devs do: not designing for scale, then had to cut back.

Even with them utilizing these services at their highest, it probably wouldn't be too expensive if they had ~100,000 subs or so. The issue isn't just cost, it's that their sub base is so low -- in a scaled-out subscription model, there's always a ton of players under-utilizing the infra that more than make up the hardcores playing all day.

I do agree that there's tech worth something, although it's hard to say if others will really see the value and I don't believe NQ has had much luck in developing useful server tech other than their core voxel systems.

I'm Glad this thread seems to have progressed to acceptance, however this is still the most horrible idea ever.

depending on the market to supply the rest of the schematics and paying whatever over inflated prices people come up with so they can afford the new ships is going to be horrible inflation on all things.

Trying to explain away how other things make this ok. Does  not make this change ok. These changes no matter how the implement them will make the game less fun for the people building industry.

no amount of trying to figure out how it works or how to work with the system changes these issue with a broken system that they have some how made worse, and NQs decision to go strait to the live server with such a massive change (because of time constraints) tells me they are trying to rush things out the door, to "Fix" the servers for release.

so I'm guessing they plan on releasing this December to kill all the beta accounts because they think that will fix the money issues.

And yes this change does make it easier for a new player to get into industry, and yes it does help ne players join the servers, but the argument here is, how long are you a new player? how long will it take new players to want to go from making pure ingots to something more costly and this change chokes them out.

For players that are mostly here for the industry game play this is a massive straw on the proverbial camels back. For me its the last straw. This change WILL cause me to leave the game. (Yeah I know can I have your stuff) This wont change what NQ is doing. I know NQ doesn't care about the people playing the game they just want the money. I'm fine with that its their company, they can chose what they want, but its also my money an I chose to give it to a developer that will actually listen to feedback.

NQ is actively trying to destroy any reason to be a single shard game, with every new "patch" they put out. Its a rather amazing accomplishment when you think about it.

NQ is basically lifting part of a mechanic from EVE again but fails to understand it and so fails to implement the bigger picture.

As this is designed in EVE, players do not produce for a finished construct/ships, they set up industry to specialize in certain elements and bring those to market.

Translated to DU, when you bring adjustors to market, the output levels will be significantly higher than when you create expensive containers, and we're talking probably triple digit percentage differences here, so the cost for the schematic is effectively much lower per unit produced. At 5000 quanta, a container schematic should build 10, while an adjustor builds 10,000. In that concept, the changes would make sense, except that in DU, Industry is designed more like Factorio or Satisfactory where one industry chain starts with raw resources and produces all the intermediate items to output and end product/element

In the end, I really feel NQ does not understand the impact the change will have because they do not actually understand their own design for the mechanic and have not looked into how the actual process plays into the entire gameplay loop. And everything we are seeing tells us that this is already done and scheduled to be patched soon, all the feedback in he world is irrelevant as they are about to repeat the 0.23 mistake again.

Also, by removing schematics from markets, NQ is removing an opportunity for trade as players can no longer go and buy schematics from remote planets and offer them for sale on Alioth. Once again NQ is pulling an activity and turning it into a UI interaction only.

It all feels like NQ is really trying to remove any actual activity or interaction with the world itself for some reason and keep it all in the UI.

So many things to respond to, but somehow i think it is pointless, because NQ is going to do this regardless of what is written in these soon to be ignored forums as history tells us regarding NQ.

I would say that forcing an economy is only going to force the player base into game play it doesn't want to do, which isn't healthy for profits. I say let the ability to be creative flow freely and let the quanta flow. Soon enough the player base will establish the economy. The game might get some good reviews for once which could lead to new players or old ones coming back.

There are far more pressing issues than trying to force an economy they cannot hope to achieve. Its in the players nature to exploit, work around or just plain ignore game features they find distasteful.

And this is also part of why I am strongly against any kind of wipe leading to players losing resources.
Not because it is necessarily a bad idea, but because we told them clearly that the game was not ready for any kind of open beta with subscriptions. And yet they went ahead and did exactly that and made promises about player progression being "forever" to try and justify the subscriptions. So NQ made their bed, and now they have to lie in it.

And the way 'release' is shaping up is look very much to be a repeat of the same problem as with the 'beta' + subscriptions changeover, where we ALL know the game is not ready and that there will be many game breaking changes coming after 'release'. So if NQ breaks their promises and remove player resources at release, it is almost guaranteed the same will happen again after release also.

I just cant anymore. This is possibly the worst idea I have heard of in a game.

The numbers from the video show 10 Warp cells in 3 hours. Per slot.. so max a single player can do is 400 Warp cells in a day. Not including Pures if we need them.

This will add 2Million Quanta to a trip from Alioth to Thades and back for my Medium hauler carrying my ore.

I don't know who come up with these numbers, thought it was a good idea to implement them with NO testing, because we need to push to release as fast as possible.

Thanks NQ for making it a easy choice for me to cancel my alt accounts and move on to a new game. I had fun but time to go vote with my walet.

Its [filtered]ing crazy man.  Everything is AFK timers.  I know SC has its own problems but at least it calls itself alpha, and have you seen the mining in SC? For starters its in the pvp zone.  Second its active. Actively searching for it, and actively breaking rocks then mining the good part.  Then to top it off the high tier ore quantanium has a 15min timer in your cargo until it literally explodes your ship because its a volatile material so you have to race against time to get it to a safe refinery.  Actual engaging gameplay that has some risk with high rewards.  What a concept right?

With all the talk about how we will react to it one would think they might actually change some of this crap. But, knowing NQ for what they are this is coming Tuesday and we can all get bent. Because it's their game and we just pay for the right to be told we're wrong and don't see the game dying around us every day from garbage development.

They're trying to balance an economy when the elements and gameplay loops aren't even established.

They can't get away with telling us we didn't say anything either. The whole post they tried to bury when they opened this one says we were loud and clear. but we will be ignored yet again.

Ah, joy. More gameplay that involves waiting on timers.

    Auto-miners: wait for timers.
    Schematics: wait for timers.
    Talents: wait for timers.

So...mining, industry, and skills development is literally as engaging as watching a clock.

Casio must be feeling the heat of competition!

Again, no information about the wipe nor any acknowledgment of the concerns players have shared about how this will likely make industry more monotonous, grindy, and boring...

All the concerns players have shared will yet again be ignored, and yet again NQ will push out an update that will (yet again) be wildly unpopular, leading to more refactors down the road (yet again).

A good few of the backers did ask the tough questions about this back in April 2020 when JC dropped the bomb that NQ was ending closed development at what we all knew was still very much a game in alpha and just stuck a "beta" label on it.

Two years later, the game is still effectively in alpha and NQ is about to call it a release.

    So....It's been 3 months now.

NQ's CEO had time to post on LinkedIn 16 times since this thread started, mostly about the metaverse and how great user-created content is...and how revolutionary web3 is (lol).

How many times has NQ commented on this topic since it started? Like 2-3 times?

It seems like he's more interested in cultivating his LinkedIn persona and going to "metaverse conferences" then engaging with customers, understanding his own product, or trying to fix NQ's cosmically bad PR (among other things).

I get that he's likely trying to position NQ for sale or another investment round...which again underscores how little the leadership believes in DU working as a product on release.

Some of the claims he's posted are borderline lies...if the leadership is that willing to "stretch" the truth in a public post, why should we trust them with anything...?

NQ likes to complain about not having enough time, but the new CEO has made it clear that there's more than one project going on.

Adding everything up, I wouldn't be shocked if DU dev was glacial in part because it only has a skeleton crew working on it, with everyone else working on these other projects that NQ won't discuss.

This all feels disingenuous and scammy...which I guess makes NQ a true "metaverse company" after all.

More evidence that NQ is aimless and destined to become a scammy web3 venture:

Blockchain isn't the future of gaming, it's a fad. NQ doesn't need a blockchain enthusiast at the helm, they need someone focused on finishing their game.

I love that single shard is hailed as a great technology "breaking online limitations" when most of the last few patches are all about implementing more restrictions because nothing can scale...

No wonder they've gone down such a hole with their game design, the leader of the company is too busy obsessing over silly web3 cliches.

It's crazy how DU doesn't even really have the basics that MMOs had 20 years ago for social interaction.  Yes we have discord which is great for people you already know. But tools that help meet people ingame helps so so much.

    - The scanner that you use can have a base range of 1000km (5su)
    - The timer to complete the scan with no skills is 10minutes (think similar to how Territory Scanner works.

With these skills, you would have a base of 5 su with no skills, but train these up and it would increase to 10 su range total.   You could then also have your base timer of 10min be reduced to 5 minutes with a couple set of skills.  Make these trains decently long for a good specialization.   You could have handling skills also, but I kind of like just having operational skills.  But the actual distance and time obviously can be adjusted based on balance, but i do think 5minutes and 10 su is a reasonable starting point, where a single person can explore, but also not so over powered for larger groups.    I like the idea of the scanner only showing general pings too, its up to you to "fly to that area" to see what that radar ping could be.

That could tho also lead to another skill where there is some percent chance it tells you if it is a wreck, ship thats not cored, or asteroid, etc. but thats kinda either way.  if you wanna maximize scanning with a group, they would need to be 20su apart, so the reality is, its not so overpowered for even larger groups, because anyone knows in the pvp meta, if a fight breaks out, 20su can be too far sometimes to save someone, and maybe not everyone has max skills.  So there is LOTS of room for ACTIVE gameplay, and reasons to fly out in space in random directions, and EXPLORE.  And this being a game and we all have finite time, have a reasonable expectation to find something in a timely manner.
