First of all, the game servers will be wiped before main launch.

As for the tutorials covering current politics and such, that's just not NQ's job. There will be plenty of things on the internet that will tell you everything you will need to know at the time. Same goes for travel time and distances, the most NQ needs to do for that imo is maybe a current distance between planets (Sorry guys, cant remember if they change or not) on a system / star map IF they implement that. Newspapers would also fall into the category of not NQ's job and a thing that will come about in various forms on the internet anyways.

You don't need an in game communications capable of coordinating ~3000 players, things like discord and teamspeak CAN be used for that through groups, roles and different channels, i would like to see you explain how they couldn't. If discord integration is supported, then you can change voice channels from in game as well. An in-game radio communication system would just add extra unneeded complexity, as well as meaning the devs have more stuff to work on that they don't 100% need. Also, there is no way that an empire would have no way of communicating with it's members if an in game comms system went down. Any organisation that has got as big as you are saying wouldn't be sane if they only relied on an in game thing that CAN be disrupted over an external thing that CAN'T (excluding alts and traitors/defectors here) be disrupted. That leads me on to how 'hacking' and spying to disrupt will exist anyways even if an in game thing wasn't implemented, through those alts and traitors and all that stuff.

Eve has probably the most successful community in an mmo to date. What are you taking about?

In eve there is an unprecedented amount of player cooperation to achieve group goals.  nothing in eve is made by just one person, it is a collaboration of players against other players.

What you call griefing is people going about thier business, thier business might be to attack your ship.

Thanks for the link to the interview!

Since the interview is one hour long and there's no transcript, I've tried to make some notes. Mostly it's things we have already heard before. Note that English is not my first language and I may have misheard something.
J.C. really likes EVE Online. There will be multiple wipes before the release. Construct blueprints will be preserved. "Information is sacred". If your ship gets destroyed and you had no blueprint, you still get a snapshot. Everything is in first-person (for immersion). Third-person view may be introduced later. There will be mysteries in the world to discover. Everyone starts at the arkship. 20 km (minimum, may be expanded) safe-zone around the starship. No artificial content (bosses or pre-built challenges). Emergent gameplay, meaningful experiences. No quests. Organizations are expected to provide player-built quest/job boards. NPC life (to hunt, etc) is challenging to do right. Will start with something simple. Tech can handle 100 people on one ship. They can move and do things while the ship is moving. The goal is that one person can't run a 500 m long ship alone. 20 cannons = 20 people. Pre-alpha has one system with 12 planets. Will expand that later on with more systems and unlock technologies to build stargates. Exploration won't be easy ("a journey"). Planets are real (giant balls, not flat). 65 km in radius at the moment. Everything is editable. If you have several months, you can dig out a mountain and see that it's not there from space. The game client downloads parts that are modified. Estimate: 1000 players, 8 hours/day, 19 years to dig out 1% of the planet. There will be prospecting gameplay (scanning to locate minerals). It will be possible for players to organize and defend themselves. Biggest overcome challenges: server tech, recruiting people and building the dream team, financing. Often can't use off-the-shelf tech. Started with Unreal engine but couldn't do what they wanted. Switched to another engine. Building not just a game, but a whole set of game technologies. Marketing is important and they'll work on that in the coming months. There's lots of great games out there and no one knows about them. They're trying to revolutionize the MMO genre. You can "paint" by changing voxel materials. Elements (engines, fuel tanks) are static, but there may be multiple varieties later on. Construct and avatar weapons are preset (not customizable), but come in many varieties. Maybe in a few years they'll think about customizing. There will be a skill system like EVE Online (offline training). Still working on that. No offline mining, but some industrial jobs will be running offline. Anything that requires interaction with the world will require you to be connected. Mining will not be automatic so that beginners can have something to do and be competitive. If you are touching the ship when it is destroyed, you die. In principle, you could escape in a smaller ship before that or just float in space with proper equipment. Bases will require power (power generators) for certain parts. Not for lights. Food is intended to be added later. Everything is scriptable in Lua (for advanced players). Can automate a lot of things. You can play games inside the game. For the moment, no underwater bases. Would like to add a bubble that creates a water-free area. Just a matter of time until they find a way to make underwater bases happen. No boats ("water ships"), hovercrafts instead. Territory units will be expensive and there will be lots of gameplay to regulate how often you can claim territory. 1 km in diameter. The only way to get anything is to craft it or to buy/get someone to craft for you. Subscription allows you to get and enjoy the whole game (10-15 €/$ per month). There will be a free trial period. There will be a PLEX-like system.   Microtransactions: no pay-to-win, maybe cosmetic items only. In-game money is called "quanta". One aspect of the game that's not talked about enough: interactive elements (pressure plates, lasers, detection areas, force fields) allow you to make puzzle games (like Portal). You can invite friends or make a business out of it. Puzzle game are expected to be co-op (since there's no cube you can drop).

Being in the community discord is a privilege, not a right.

There are over 900 people in Discord right now, and everyone knows to treat each other with mutual respect despite arguments that arise when talking about the game. "Be Nice to Each Other" is the core rule of the server rules that everybody has to read before joining the rest of the channels. We have done a lot of work to ensure that it stays that way.

I get that people are not 100% happy with the way that moderation decisions are carried out all the time, but we didn't get to be this large by letting everyone run around mistreating each other without any consequences. We try to foster an environment where people can be comfortable talking about the game without fear of being attacked.

I highly doubt that the harassment your brother displayed would be well taken if he did the same thing on the forums. Like I said before, if you want a different type of discord where you are free to openly harass people, you are free to create your own.

If your motivation here is to try and get me in trouble, well... I'll let my own record stand as my defense.

Regardless, your actions on Discord, here and (probably most importantly) the threats in private messages you have sent me have shown that neither of you are willing to contribute in a positive way to the discussions taking place on the Unofficial Community Discord.

I have reported this thread for breaking the forum rules (Section 3.E) and the threats you sent me privately accordingly.

That is all I have to say about this matter.

    Hi @LIPSYxLUNA,

I'm an admin on the Discord there, first and foremost I'm sorry this had to happen, while I was away during all this, I can surely mention that any moderation action taken there is with reason, if you felt that this was wrongly done, a message to the moderators or the admins (in a calm manner and with willingness to resolve the issue) would have been 100x better than keeping the insults and  aggressive manner towards a member of the Discord and his work.

    Cheers,

As i was present whilst this happend....i can safely say that Yamamushi was well within his right's to do so.... If you insult him directly calling him a prick cause your "brother" could not type ~forumauth properly and get his accout passed for alpha..... ( ever wonder if maybe he did not have rights to access that.....maybe he typed it wrong?). When everyone else who had the rights to and were able to type ~forumauth and was able to get access, maybe...is not Yamamushi's fault..... but your brothers. Also for insulting the Admin of his own chat slandering his creation ( in case your wondering, he created that  auth script himself). Anyway.....there is no smoke without fire....he should be mindful of who he decides picks fights with...or tries to insult......

Well, wether you like it or not, the "single shard" expression isn't born yesterday and hasn't been invented by us, as it has been used for more than a decade in the video game industry, and has been widely spread with EVE Online.

Edit: According to wikipedia, a "Shard" can be used to designate a database architecture OR a game server (which can be hosted on several computers).

Hi Dehkur and welcome on the Dual Universe official forum.

Nowhere it has been said this will be hosted on a single computer.
It has been said it will be hosted on a single server.
Are you not confusing the words "server" and "computer"?
A server can be hosted on a cluster composed of many computers.
And for Dual Universe, this is definitely the case.

    Nyzaltar.

Many things came as a consequence of man's darkest discovery. It signalled the end, and a new beginning. The UMF sought to survive, to carry on the legacy of humanity. The nihilists sowed despair, seeking instead to scorn the human race. Nations cracked under the crumbling populace while individuals scrambled for better standings.

Humanity endured through the centuries, rising and falling, fighting forward under the light of the neutron star. The Arkships were an escape from it all. Escape from the inevitable spiral of death mankind faced, whether by nature or itself.

They say there were two types of people during those last few years before the launch of the Arkships. Either you had given up all hope, turned your back on humanity and squandered what you had.

Or you believed in second chances, in a new beginning.

    Interesting discussion.
10 is a small ships complement, but lets assume automation effeciencies means we can do away with crew and have officer/c-class roles.

    Edit: RL/in game descriptions added.

1: Captain - makes decisions. Probably owns the ship.
2: Pilot - flies the ship around. Preferably well.
3: Navigator - monitors all radar, sets courses, does mappy stuff.
4: Signals (Comms) - monitors enemy comms, jamming, ecw, does friendly comms
    5: Gunner 1 - pew pew
    6: Gunner 2 - pew pew
    6: Engineer/Mechanic - repairs / tuning
7: Quartermaster - cargo, decks inc moving things from A to B. Tractor beams
8: Weapons - reloads, flushing (overheat), torps etc
9: XO/Watch - watching everything, filtering key info to Cap.
10: Marine - pew pew in person, offensive/defensive.

All specialists in that perform a critical role rather then they are experts. In fact you probably will struggle with less than that because sharing roles gets risky.

And yes, if they are lucky, 99% of most crews job is watching screens. But you want them there for those 1% of the time - battle

I think the answer as to "why can't a single-seater dreadnaught can't be built" is simple, that reason being computational power.

Control Units are either Screens or Cockpits. If the Devs do the EVE trick, a Control Unit will be operating on a certain Computational Power (CPU), meaning it can be linked up to a certain maximum of 3D mesh elements at a time.. which makes sense.

Now, add some Powergrid limitations with certain Control Units operating within certain Wattage and we got ourselfs a pretty good reason why you can't build a super-sized star-fighter, with a cockpit on it and fly solo. - aside from the fact you are shit out of lck if something gets blown to bits and you need repairs as you fight. The arguement could be made for an ammo-to-repair-unit mechanism like EVE's ancillary repair units, but the point is, you would need people to reload said repair units... and you are flying a shp and fighting, you don't got time to reload the repair units as well.

Further than that, the Engines and other Elements can be operating in a certain Voltage, which means they can only be linked to certain capacitors, which require people to be there to regulae the input in them.

So yeah, a small frigate could indeed operate in a limited crew of 5, similar to a battle tank and such a ship design could be used for police forces in-game or for people who want to fly with friends only, who could adapt to a bigger size I guess.

Evil_Porcupine reacted to NQ-Nyzaltar in Organization management & Exceptional NQ Interventions
    Hi everyone.

Until now, we couldn’t manually manage (remove/promote) Legates in an organization easily on the administration side.
Since Yesterday, we are able to use a feature simplifying considerably the process.

As we already mentioned many times in the past, we (Novaquark) don’t want to involve ourselves in the management of organizations created by players. However, we are also aware that the current (and temporary) state of the management system contains obvious flaws. You know it. We know it. As this is still “work in progress”, we hoped that organizations creators will be reasonable enough to avoid abusing the well-known flaws of the system and would wait that all the rules are implemented before trying to sabotage other organizations.

So we are going to state the obvious here:
It’s ok to “play a bad guy” and use dirty tricks once all the rules are implemented. However, it’s absolutely not ok to start exploiting the flaws of a work in progress system: this is not “playing a bad guy”, this is just toxic behavior and trying to gain an advantage while not playing by the rules.

That’s why - despite our will of non-involvement - we will make exceptions until the full implementation of the RDMS (Rights & Duties Management System) for the Organizations.

Why did we decide to intervene?
    Two reasons:
    1) In the current state, a Legate has much more power than in the final system, due to the minimalistic mechanisms temporarily in place. If in the current system, any Legate has the right to promote a member to Legate status by himself alone, in the final system the default rights will be completely different: promoting a legate will be done only with a vote by majority rule, or the right to promote someone will be given to specific persons and not every Legate.
    2) In the current state, a Legate cannot be demoted by any mean (even by the creator of an organization). In the final system, default configurations will allow to demote a Legate with a vote by majority rule. A Legate could also be demoted by specific persons who have been given the right (most probably by the Organization founder) to do so.

How is this going to work?
Each organization is going to have one "wild card": if there is a problem with the Legates in an Organization, you can contact the support team at support@novaquark. However, keep in mind we (Novaquark) reserve the right to intervene (or not) on a case by case basis.

Example of a case where we will intervene:
Some Legate using the flaw of the current temporary system to vandalize (or generate troubles in) an organization.

Example of a case where we won’t intervene:
Two organizations have merged in one, and now both creators of previous organizations want to mutually exclude each other from the organization. In this kind of case, we won’t remove anyone. We won’t favorize one creator above another. However, we will do our best to help finding a satisfying solution for both parties.

    As a global reminder:
If someone finds a loophole in the rules in place (that may happen), and this loophole is used to generate trouble and spread a toxic behavior, we won’t stay idle watching the situation deteriorating.

    Best Regards,
    Nyzaltar.
