Actually your own advise is good OP.

    But misdirected.

Take a step back from your addictive nature of collecting resources and building that cool thing, or amassing useless amounts of virtual money. Stop playing for a few months and see the situation with clear eyes. Nothing is happening. No new content. No developer communication. No CEO who's vision was the driving force of the project. The only thing that continues is allowing people to pay a monthly fee. Oh, and the insultingly hollow and 'diplomatic' responses that occasionally filter back through the forums. We are being managed like cattle. Absolute refusal to give us any real information or answer any real concerns truthfully. While at the same time being as careful as possible so as not to scare away the remaining cash cows who donate money every month.

I agree with you that if we don't want to play we should leave and not post negative comments. That's is why I hardly visit here anymore.

But trust me, I was seeing things exactly like you are now. It's foolish, a fantasy. What is worse is that I argued this exact same point against decent people in the community for a couple of months. Those same people were probably equally seeing things like you do at one point.

NQ's biggest crime in all of this is having people who will defend them and back them up all day only to let those same people down and crush their enthusiasm one by one until we all end up in this same cynical position. I get it now. It took me a while.

Fair point there. I remember seeing youtube and other social media advertising a while back and thinking DU was getting to the main stage. Not so much now.

I doubt very much if there is even a development team left. Even with zero guidance or incentive a group of coders and concept designers would have come up with more than we have seen since December. The game now is to release previously shelved, low importance content at a fast enough rate to keep capturing a few new subscribers. But it's obvious that no one is doing any new work at all.

All it took was to quit the game to see things more clearly. At this point my only honourable move is to say I was wrong, foolish, smitten by the charm of my own fantasy of what the game could be. You guys were very much right.

This is a very high profile abandonware project from all I can tell now.

I don't really get how any professional studio could fail to release a major planned feature, call it "phase 1" then go completely silent as to when "phase 2" will drop, even 2 months later.

It's no longer fair to call it 0.24 "phase 2"...it's just the next update.

So far this year, they've changed the jetpack, installed purchased textures, and added org wallets.

I think I need a new job where I don't have to spend my Sunday fixing bugs or working so much and can just do like 2-3 tiny things in 5-6 months and call it day.

At some point in a relationship you sometimes have to recognize when it is becoming toxic due to the inactivity or inability to communicate from one or both parties.  Once you are sure that a relationship has passed a certain point then usually there is only one outcome that is logical, and a lot of people here have already passed that threshold weeks ago.  More are getting to that point.  Daily it seems.

It hurts the most when you know the relationship could be salvaged or at least extended just a bit with better communication or a tiny bit of effort.  Then your heart breaks when you never hear a word or see any of that effort put in and you may never know the whole story of why.

You're familiar with what you sound like when you're choking and gargling the stuff? Excellent! next time you're in Tokyo I'll hook you up with one of my local pals to show you around 2-chome, apparently he's into that sort of thing, too. ?

After my post yesterday, I got Sofmap, the shop I bought the 3080 from, to contact Zotac in Hong Kong again (where the card was sent for repair). They got back to me a few hours later and it turns out Zotac now say that they don't have the replacement parts to repair the card so they haven't been able to start the process of fixing it yet... And since it takes anywhere up to a month for merchandise to reach Japan from Hong Kong, May is looking increasingly unlikely...

    off topic post, but:

I still reckon they're just using my card in one of their mining warehouses.

Estimates from Forbes and Bloomberg suggest that anywhere up to 75% (with a low end of 65%) of all bitcoin mining takes place in China and that percentages is growing rapidly, they use about 150Twh per year already and this is projected to nearly double in the next three years.

With bitcoin prices so high due to people like Elon Musk purposefully playing the markets to boost its value, China are raking in billions of dollars every day now: Chinese Bitcoin is estimated to be worth about $600,000,000,000...  (Which to be honest is actually only 3 Bezoses)

It's more profitable for chinese manufacturers to manufacture GPUs or specifically MPUs for mining locally and paying the penalties for reneging on their international contracts or missing their delivery dates than it is to actually ship completed product to the west.

That is why we are seeing a nearly 1 year and growing waiting list for a whole bevvy of silicon products now: Any silicon not severely and iron-clad contracted from before the pandemic (i.e. Apple, Samsung, Intel) is not going to reach the customer, instead it will go to feed the local bitcoin efforts.

I actually found the mining experience quite fun. I liked the feeling of being deep underground hunting for riches. Especially when finding a mega node, the cavern experience was epic in the sense of scale. I never cared about building wealth just for the sake of it, so for me mining was a job to buy what I needed and not too tedious. Once set up there are other forms of income possible to a creative player after the early game grind.

What did strike me as odd though was the many, many small nodes scattered around the hex. My own idea if I had been making this game would be vast deposits, much larger than the megas we had. Mines that would be active for months, infrastructure built into them, hangars with haulers ready to go, defences in place to secure the asset, mining settlements and so forth. A mine should be a semi-permanent feature on the map that is utilised over a very long term and ownership should be able to be contested, mining rights sold, etc.

Burble got a reaction from aliensalmon in What were you expectations of this game before you played it?
I expected a voxel builder/resource collector game that I could sink a few months of lockdown into and be totally absorbed by. What I got was well worth my time and money. Good fun, good people, wonderful build options to play with. We created sport within the game and shared the fun with many people.

I had also expected something a bit more like Empyrion with regards to crafting, which at first I was a bit disappointed about. The system in DU was complicated and intimidating for the first few days. The apparent lack of profit possible with small scale industry also was confusing.

I had also expected a much more dangerous environment with regards to PvP. The first hex I took on Alioth I buried my TCU deep into the sand and built a secret base with a tiny, well hidden entrance hole. I had no idea about safe zones.

I knew there would be mining but I was not ready for the true beauty of a T1 meganode. A very exciting a fun feature that can enslave you for 24 hours of feverish work.
