    I can't help but laugh at the MU implementation. I was begging for MUs because mining was just such a nightmare:

    So I hoped MU's would help remove a lot of the tedium from the game and actually make it fun to play....

    Except when we got MUs it was totally not what I had hoped for....I wanted to remove tedium - not add more!

    Well, its was several waves of "typicals".

    1) KS people interested in social/political gameplay -- absolute majority quit after its become very clear game nothing like they waiting (+ tired of waiting). Quite a lot of people actually, many with expensive pledges.
    2) KS people who become gradually more and more disapointed during alpha over lack of progress;
    3) People who started playing with Beta and quit in several weeks (in simple terms -- over lack of content);
    4) Infamous JC last gift of 0.23, knocked out a lot very sturdy people, who survived all previous BS.
    5) Ones who expected Starbase will be better (its not exactly, but many will not return to DU anyway now)
    6) ?

    What is systematic, that expectations of each generation so to say are less and less. Romantic people from "1)" expected best game ever (funny), current 6) just beg NQ anemicly to make MU less annoying, in most other things they pretty much reached fatalistic acceptance. Well maybe they want some laser balance fixed or other little pvp nonsence, but its very minor things.

    Yeah - the typical DU player quit about 12 months ago after the schematics change rolled out....

    Actually, while OP author somewhat misses what is why, thing is, that some players have much more "kings ear" and sway over desicion making is pretty much fact (also important info leaks about changes). I seen it by my own eyes. Extent of their influence is another question, but they at least have % over 0.

    While I can't drop hard proof here to not burn names I still kinda not want to do harm, its up to you to believe me or not.

    As a pleb you can only make like useless forum topics no one ever cares. Or troll simps in Discord just for pleasure.

    Ha - I wish it were just 'silence' - half the time we'd get talked down to like we're  a bunch of chicken little's .... "You don't understand just how much ore there is to mine! It'd take years!"

    Every time you did get a dev response on any of the concerns, you'd get told you were just wrong...

    Macro social component is kinda more silent (then other issues) but very important casualty in whole mess.

    To illustrate: we still (after 2 years?) do not have community page, where orgs were able to post adverts/news/communicate. No any meaningful social tools (minus wallets). No ways to seriously influence world. DU started with quite healthy macro-org life, rpg, ambitions (just check all drama in first 2 years, it was great) and ended up shrinking to pretty much solo/small band of nerds experience.

    I sometimes wonder why to even bother with all expensive one shard shit, if its totaly not used. DU pretty much be same with some 30 people sessions.

    I was shocked from the beginning that the ground did not regenerate over time I knew this would end up being a problem and in the end rather than fix it they took the cheaper way out I’m so disappointed in the detection this last patch took us I just wish they would scrap this I’m finding it a Paine in the ass two even be able two build anymoor it’s not fun geting so little amount of ore this is not fun anymore two me I just loved the building in this game now it’s just two time consuming
    and even if I wanted two build a pvp ship and trie that I’m not spending a month or moor two lose a ship it may be time two just try find somting else that fills my creative side voide that landmark left me but now DU is heding in the same direction at this rate I dont see this game ever being good maybe star base can do better

    And this is what we tried telling NQ since 2017, but they never even acknowledged that there might be a problem until suddenly Demeter.

    - We think you are underestimating how much people are going to dig, how will you handle the persistence server load?  Silence...
    - How will you deal with fixed resources (ore and tiles) making it so that new players will have a harder and harder time staring the game since all the best spots will be taken?  Silence..
    - This game is really difficult to learn for new players and the building system requires lots of resources to learn proper. How will you solve this? Silence...
    - Can this game really function without PVE? Silence..
    - How will you limit people from advancing to quickly but still have fun building?  Silence...
    - The lag city stress test (pre-alpha thing before we had District 6 to highlight the same issue) shows that this game will not scale anywhere close to what you promised it would. Is this going to be fixed before release? Silence...
    - Why is there so little progress being made with regard to improved game loops?  Deafening silence...

    Remember when they conned us into kickstarting this game by implying that their server tech was totally sorted out and could scale basically infinitely to be a true massively multiplayer game?

    This was the vid that largely sold me on DU. Having burned out on the unbearable lag in Empyrion - this seemed like a game that'd solve the unsolvable problem of Empyrion lag.

    The server stuff was supposed to be the sorted out solid foundation that they built this game on. So many other open world games failed due to poor server tech - I genuinely believed that this would manage to be the exception. The game built by an actual engineer, from the ground up - focused on a solid technical foundation of a scalable and high performance massively multiplayer server engine. After all - the engine failures are what made Empyrion and Wolds Adrift awful in combat - surely DU would get it right by starting with the server tech...

    So much for that....

    You're wrong here - DU uses Unigine for rendering on the client side but their server tech is proprietary. There is nothing wrong with running on AWS. AWS offers phenomenal scaling capabilities and is a fantastic solution for game hosting where player counts vary through the day and life cycle of the game.  It is frequently cheaper and better performance to host via AWS than in house if you are expecting a major difference between your high and low loads.

    It would have cost NQ far more to buy whatever silly number of physical hosts they would have needed to host the game when it launched - and then what? The player count is likely less than a third of what it was a year ago.

    The game engine and hosting were far from the primary failure points of DU. The lack of a game and the complete and total failure to listen to the community played a bigger factor.  JC literally played the game with infinite resourced and complained that mining was too easy despite never having mined.

    I think you're making the right decision. It's sad that things are in this state. I've seen tons of posts from community members explaining exactly how to fix each part of this game, but none of it is listened too. Instead, we get changes that no-one ever wanted.

    I don't expect the game to last much longer.
