  1. Using LUA scripts will not impede the builds of other individuals, they still have all the tools to create what they wish--they just have a tool in their toolbox that they do not wish to use. If I have a toolbox and refuse to use an adjustable wrench, that should not preclude my neighbor from using that adjustable wrench. Especially since both of our toolboxes are exactly the same and provided by the same manufacturer. If the wrench can be either manually operated, or automatic (with the insertion of a small battery), and I don't want to insert the battery to take advantage of the extra option, that is my choice. We are talking about the expansion of an existing system in the software--a system that is one that differentiates it from similar games. Placing restrictions on that asset because some people chose not to use it does not seem like a viable option to me. Saying that one must use LUA to get the maximum out of one's constructs is like saying that you have to practice flying in order to be good at it. Yep, a tool requires study in order to be good at it. If you chose to not use that tool, or chose not to become as proficient in it as someone else, then you really cannot complain that their constructs do things that yours cannot. Besides, those constructs would probably be available for purchase, so they would be available to whomever wishes to purchase it and they would receive the benefit of the craftsman's skill. In the end, it would just be a matter of someone purchasing a) something that does the job, and probably does it well, or b) something that does the job as well as "a" but has some extra bells and whistles. Welcome to a diverse economy with widespread options for customers to make choices.
  2. Hello again <waves to any ex-Landmark players>, Back from a bit of a hiatus dealing with family issues. Looking forward to being involved in this project and trying to beat up the building engine. It appears that I have a great of reading to do to catch up on things. Hope all is going well for everyone--this should be a fun ride Pet.
  3. Pretty much what Dhara said, but then I tend to be a builder. Add to that, regular updates of texture libraries so everything built doesn't look like it came out of the same Siberian factory. oh, and almost forgot, Breakfast served by provocative personnel
  4. I have some Peruvian Pink catnip, and some old Penthouses laying around somewhere.
  5. ......oh.....snap Watch out Cybrex! You have some competition in the peg leg and speaking with vowels organizations!
  6. I like patterns, they are pretty. They give me nice borders to color with crayons. I find that enjoyable to do.
  7. I think a couple people just decided to throw some things together real quick to show that it could be done with multiple people. I'm not going to give them grief for a quick fun video that you just throw out there. I certainly don't want NQ to think that they shouldn't put any communications out there that has not had the art department sign off on, run through a production company, and have music from the Ecole Normale Superieure Chamber Quartet. Unless people prefer that there is less informal communication and everything has been run through the local spin doctor.
  8. Whales are scary. Especially the ones that eat seals and stuff.
  9. The specifications for a Glock are the same for all people. However Person A will probably like/dislike it more than Person B. Just as Person C may be able to completely outperform Person D. Most of it will depend on training and skill. As a builder, I can let people know the specifications. If they want to know how well it works, I will give them references to speak with. If that is not good enough for them, I'm am sure there is someone down the road that will be happy to sell them a Chevy instead of a Ferrari
  10. BoB was around for a really long time though...you gotta give nods to a corp that is so large it is accused of buying off Devs for an advantage
  11. The answer is 42. The answer is always 42. ....where is my towel.
  12. I seem to recall that they will not be converting and importing meshes. There is software out there that can take mesh and turn it into a .vox. The problem is, that it would take manpower on DU's part because they want to control the IP of their game. My guess is one of the first things someone would try to import would be the large "DongOfDoom Star Destroyer" so there would have to be some kind of review process--which would require man hours and I am sure *drama*. Not mention people attempting to bring in X-Wing Fighters or Starship Enterprises and DU having to deal with IP issues. Personally I would love to have the option, or the option to bring in my own textures, but I have done 3-D work and have a huge library of textures. That would also give me an advantage that many would be unhappy with I am sure. If DU allowed imports, but with a fee to cover the expense of the review process, then people would complain that it was "pay to win". Sooooo.......all in all....it probably has the chance of a snowball in Miley Cyrus's....um....nevermind.
  13. I'll be building. Structures, ships, vehicles, whatever people need. On the side, probably have a nice little cantina for socializing, people to meet and trade (either above or below the table), inconspicuous meeting place for people, good music, drink, waitresses with questionable morals, you know, the usual Someplace that if there is an RP community, they can hit as well to do what they do.
  14. Damn....after seeing everyone in the video, I'm feeling really old! LOL
  15. Very true. I just don't know of anything else that might even come close to what DU is attempting.
  16. You could do Landmark, and it is actually fairly powerful once you learn how to work with it. It is just pretty much pure building, the combat portion is all PvE and ......wanting....
  17. Well, I guess you should do all you can to make sure they reach the stretch goal then.
  18. You realize that there are groups and corporations that are being specifically designed to piss people off. My guess is that as in any social interaction, you are going to have individuals who are hard to differentiate from male appendages. Given that, no matter what you do, or what digital piece of paper you sign, is not going to prevent that--or prevent you from making an alt so no one recognizes you being an ass for when you've had a bad day at work. ....and, the above digital piece of paper will also, probably, inspire said individuals to greater assitude since it is obviously important to some people.
  19. I was watching the latest video on the voxel technology that is used by DU. In the video the show where they created a large rectangle and used a sphere shape to remove an arc from the rectangle. When this was done, there was a deformation of the remaining voxels along the line of the arc. Given the nature of voxels, I would expect some of this. However, that does bring up the question that if the shape of the voxel is going to be dependent on the voxels that surround it, will it be possible to use a "voxel reactor" to create "special" voxel shapes that can be cut and pasted into things. Those of you familiar with building in Landmark will recognize the "voxelmancy" (I hate that term) approach. The other part of this, is will the texture that is applied to an existing voxel also modify surface of the voxel, i.e. a rough stone textures will give the voxel and actual rough finish, or merely the representation of a rough finish by the shading of the texture. Since we are dealing with a Sci-Fi IP, the ability to have crisp lines and curves is going to be important. My concern is that we are going to need to jump through a number of hoops in order to get those nice smooth curves, using "putty", etc.... in order to get the presentation that we wish on our builds. Judging from some of the names I am seeing posted in the forums, we have quite a few builders here that know their way around the voxel universe and I think a good discussion of what our needs and wants this early on in the game process might be worthwhile. I don't think any of us want to have to jump through 20 hoops to make a 1x1x20 cylinder, or spend half a day making an alphabet.
  20. Blender is going to be much more robust than sketchup and probably serve your purposes better in the longrun. The learning curve can be a little steep, but they have a great community and there is alot of help out there getting up to speed with the product. I know people the use it for their meshes and swear by it.
  21. I believe that you may be overestimating how far along the project is.
  22. Little plastic statues of hula girls that you place by the front screen of your spaceship and move while you are moving through space. The corresponding bobbing head dog statue that goes by the rear screen of your spaceship.
  23. Most of the virtual worlds that have builders and DJs--Second Life, Utherverse, etc.... MMOs--Lord of the Rings Online, Guild Wars 2, Final Fantasy, The Secret World, EVE. The last 2+ years--building in Landmark off and on Involved in Revival until the plug was pulled.
