AzureSkye reacted to Ben Fargo in Sandbox vs Themepark MMOs - What do you think?
I think we tend to look at this question backwards.  Instead of asking if it is better for an MMO to be a sandbox or a themepark, we should ask if it is better for sandboxes and themeparks to be MMO's.

A sandbox definitely needs to be an MMO.  The places people visit and the action that happens there is all created by other players.  As the video pointed out, sandboxes can not survive if they lose their population.

It is not clear what a themepark gains by being an MMO.  Most themeparks rely heavily on various forms of instancing to create the kind of experience players want.  Some forms are so subtle and common that we usually do not think of them as instancing.  An example would be the NPC who gives the players a quest and rewards them when they are done.  Often there will be players being sent on the quest and others being rewarded for it at the same time.  Since all the players see the NPC and the other players, this may not seem like an instance, but the NPC is having very different conversations with different players.  Everyone knows this, but each player just ignores the others, because otherwise their quest would seem ridiculous.

Both sandboxes and themeparks provide enjoyable experiences.  Some people prefer one kind, others like both.  However, allowing huge numbers of people to play a game together adds a lot of difficulty that developing a single player game would not have.  If the enjoyment of a themepark depends on ignoring the other players, why should it be an MMO?  Could the same experience be presented better as a single player or small party game?

If gates are dynamic structures, then you could use them offensively. You could effectively snatch or steal the ships of other people by throwing the gates at them.

Of course, then the question is how is momentum conserved through a gate? If the gate is moving, does the ship on the other end acquire the relative velocity upon exit? If so, you could also forcibly crash opponents ships into planets or each other.

Ultimately, gates need sizes, ranges, limitations, and variations. If any gate can connect to any other gate, the whole universe becomes point-to-point, limiting interesting interactions (namely, plotting courses and avoiding traps and events).

Also hard-limits like "max 100 players per org" are laughably easy too go around. We'd just have BOO1. BOO2. BOO3... BOO47, ect.

If you mean limited by the total number of organisations in the game, no. I see no reason why NQ would benefit from that.

However, organisations limited by number of players? Possibly. In all sincerity, I hope so. It's logical to limit the member size of the organisation by skill level as in Eve. However, the difference between Eve Online and Dual Universe is the subscription method. With the free to play model being utilised in Eve, the need to limit organisations by skill became even more apparent. In Dual Universe, you can't play if don't pay. So, the organisation size could be influenced by the level of a skill. I don't think it's that necessary - except to balance organisation size with time spent playing in the game. i.e. you can't be the leader of a 3000 man organisation if you just joined the game three days ago.

I, however, think there is the need to limit the number of organisations a single player can create. We're already seeing players join or create half a dozen organisations, with some 'motivated' players joining well over a score. Whether NQ decides to limit the organisations a player can create by a 'social' category skill, and/or the number of organisations you can join by another skill, is up to NQ to decide. Personally, I prefer limiting the organisation size and the organisations created by skill.

With the Right & Duties Management System, you will be able to assign access/control of constructs by organisations and players when the system is complete. It won't be necessary to join organisations to access their services or constructs - except the creators decide to enforce that rule themselves.

You could also just add 'Limited' as Lethys suggest above.

    Cheers.

I think nobody ever said they gonna be safe in any way. They are construct, which can be captured or destroyed by anyone who can beat you in battle. PvP battle, with live players on both sides. Not some 6am PvE raid.

Making them dynamic.... I think that'd make them too easy to protect, as you could just take them with your main fleet, or anchor at your main base.

Making them connect with multiple gates. IMO that would make expanding network too plain and cheap. I'd rather have to create transfer hubs with multiple gates, and less important hubs with just one.

    1. Build a ship with resources to build the gate.
    2. Get on together with friend, direct it towards your destination and set it to constantly accelerate in straight line
    3. All of you switch characters to those who stayed in the known world, rest remain inactive while the ship fly using it's momentum
    4. In the middle of flight one of you wakes up and change from acceleration to deceleration
    5. After few days/weeks/months ship arrive, you wake up all those characters, build gate and open connection.

At least that's how I imagine those "probes". Expensive and hard to make, but NOT time wasting.

    First off, hi!

Sitting here thinking it over, my first impulse or question was: What's with the good old days where you would judge reputation by yourself, with your mind instead of, say, abstract values and numbers.

I also think too many aspects that may play a notable role in judging people or making up your mind would be over-simplified or "washed away" in a simplified +/- system where it's kinda like trying to judge something based solely on simple "likes" or "dislikes".

Now, if I get this right, you ask for an implemented system rather than people just doing this "somehow", e.g. making notes for themselves or rating things for themselves. You may likely guess what I'm about to refer to at this point: The implementation effort and whether NQ can or wants to cover this at this time, or the near future (not counting if the larger community wants it or not, that is).

Of course "it takes resources" cannot be a universal argument or explanation to possibly shoot down ideas that may be interesting or useful for the future, no doubt, but so far I simply think my mind (or manual notes) can cover what you suggest so far. While it might be easier to track a few things with such a system, with a bit of inquiry you could do the same. The possible downside I see is that, eventually, some people or many might rely on it too much. This could, maybe, lead to false conclusions solely based on + or - values.

In short, even with that system you'll likely can't stop thinking or inquiring. I can get that it might be a good idea or useful at times, but on the other hand I currently think it can't be "too reliable" in the end.

This sounds a lot like the Drengin invading the Torians in GalCiv.

And there's no way that the gates won't be able to be private. You'd have to be able to collect tolls.

There's definitely a max speed limit. Has to be for physics calculations.

I agree, there should be no "delete" option for physical things. Additionally, to encourage the need to replace and build new things, there needs to be some sort of wear/tear and maintenance going on.

I'm against deleting things. DU claim to follow some rules of physics, and conservation of mass is one of the main ones.
Destroying (devices, blueprints) OK, you can smash that computer. But the "scrap" should remain, littering the area surrounding cities, factories and bases.
And you can't really destroy dirt.

But dumping in space should be a thing. If you want to spend time and fuel to shoot all that dirt up there.

Another wild and crazy idea for you all!

From what we've seen in the game, from the trailers and videos, is all metal building voxels and terrain voxels. All the rocks and trees, while detailed, appear to be "elements", which can't be mined. I'm proposing that trees and bushes, while not necessarily made from voxels themselves, generate or release materials that can be made into wood voxels. Especially if there are a variety of types of wood colors and grains.

Why? Because nothing says luxury like an all wood interior!

Hmm... that wasn't wild or crazy...

AzureSkye reacted to NQ-Nyzaltar in SUGGESTION to NQ about PACKS
    Hi everyone,

Despite the fact some seem to believe the contrary, it was never said that it will remain forever impossible to add a Supporter Pack to a Founder account.
It's not possible, for the time being. It's not meant to stay that way. It's a huge work that has started before we released the Supporter Packs. Ideally we would have released this possibility at the same time as the Supporter Packs. However, as we saw it would never make it in time with the Supporter Packs schedule, we decided it will be implemented at a later time. We hear your concerns and yes, it was already planned, just delayed for now. We apologize for the inconvenience.

We will keep you informed when we will have more details on this topic.

    Best Regards,
    Nyzaltar.

As other's have pointed out, yes, they will include Alpha 1 and 2. While it may not have been the best way to answer the question, they are correct.

"We also announced a while back that those Supporter Packs wouldn't give access before the Alpha 2 phase. However, after many internal discussions, we have decided to proceed differently, for the reasons explained here. If you have only just discovered the project and are ready to dive into the many worlds of Dual Universe, these Supporter Packs will give you the opportunity to help back its ongoing development and redeem exclusive items, too! Not only that, but by pledging the Patron Pack, it will allow you to take part in the live testing during Pre-Alpha!"

"Nearing the end of August 2017, we made a second announcement in which we decided to delay the Alpha 1 phase. We wanted to adopt a more progressive approach in development by improving server stability first before adding additional gameplay features. You can find that announcement here.

Today we announced the Supporter packs, which give the following access:
Contributor Pack: Alpha 2 Sponsor Pack: Alpha 1 Patron Pack: Pre-Alpha You can find the announcement here."

The access phase stated in the individual packs just means how early you'll be able to get in to the development of the game. If you back Patron, you will have access to Pre-Alpha, Alpha 1, Alpha 2 and Beta.

Which also leads into the next quote and answer:

     ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
This is why there are only 3 different packs this time around. You are not buying for the perks. You are buying for the access and to help test and support Novaquark in the development of Dual Universe.

The perks came and went with the Kickstarter and Founder Packs.

" Please choose the Supporter Patron Pack only if:
        - You want to help the Dev team improve the game experience immediately and you are okay to test the game under NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement).
        - You wish to support the game extensively without in-game access at this time.
    "
    Source: http://dualthegame.com/en/news/2018/03/07/regarding-access-to-pre-alpha-and-the-patron-pack/

This is why there is also a big red warning message confirming you this before you confirm and buy the packs.

Disclaimer: you are joining a game that is under development. While you will be able to play and we hope you will enjoy the game, this is a real Pre-Alpha and as such, you must expect the following : The game servers are available once per week (Each test date & time is available at the top of the Dual Universe homepage) The Pre-Alpha phase is under strict NDA (Non Disclosure Agreement). It means you cannot share footage of the game. There will be bugs, game crashes and the client isn't optimized for low specs computers. As we are in Pre-Alpha, not every gameplay feature (such as PvP and the Economy) is available in-game. You can check the homepage in order to see what is available now and what will come later. You can also check the community Trello for more information. Thank you @Alethion for posting this

See the lines I made bold and underlined @FullSend.

     ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

The packs are not meant to be about the perks, but rather your faith in Novaquark and helping them with the Development of Dual Universe.

Lastly, I believe this should answer the question of the topic now!

    ~ Meldrik
