To be brutally honest such cursed games have little bit of endless fat loss or junkie story. Like its always "diet starts next monday" or "just last one dose" thing, so it like "game will be good in X years" or "next patch", its "just alpha/beta/recently released".

Question is, is it really so, or just mental acrobatics of coping?

Because its not 5 years to just wait, its 5 years to survive having costly servers. Quite a difference. With current vector of events (if its not magicly changed), project will be closed and pretty much forgotten much faster. Like Tabula Rasa, per exemple.

Well, even if we miss some details, I think general launch context is pretty clear.

    1) Deal with Quanta Nick likely included (or highly suggested) some sort of minimal viable product launch within 2022. So it will be 2022 99%.
    2) MVP itself probably not defined hard in content/features, so its "best you can do" at deadline, with priority of cutting costs (this what we pretty much observe). It means nothing trully will hold this somewhat forced release from standpoint of "not ready". It just be called ready.
    3) 2021 development mostly over, with Christmas time eating up rest of the year.

Then we have quite formed window:

    4) NQ not super fast (punn intended), so I doubt it will be first 3 month of 2022 (yet late march/early april not totaly impossible -- if they for some reason really pressed now).

    5) Most importantly, we have upper border of release -- with Starfield going up november, it will be suicide for "space mmo game" to release anywhere after early september in 2022.

Considering also summer vocations period, it leaves us with 2 main candidate periods:
may/june (faster scenario) august/september (if some additional last minute crunch be needed/there is luxury for it, more likely?) Latter date will be also more friendly to marketing for several reasons, but I kinda digress.

Its actualy most problematic conflict of DU disign.

There is still very hardcrore part of players, who play A LOT (some 24/7 basicly), have sometimes up to several dozen alts, also made fortunes on early NQ mistakes or outright exploiting (exploit-aquired capitals still bulk of some big pockets). They filthy rich, have everything and pretty much invulnerable to any balancing, while obviously gladly rape game overall and economy especialy, if allowed (NQ kinda trying meekly limit them, but mosly failing).

And there is more casual, with less free time or competitive mood crowd, who want to fool around, build etc, without running some economic empires. They not rich and, in contrary, vulnerable to all sorts of limits, taxes and assorted NQ shennegians (0.23 as best example how deadly "innovations" can be for this strata of players). They, as real life poor, usualy on recieving end.

NQ kinda in impasse to "balance" these two categories of players.

While I was for year mocked as negative [insert bad word] whistleblower, I actually think NQ is secretly planning wipe for some time, pretty much from start of Beta.

Just like butcher, keeping it bit of secret from 4 legged friends, until its time.

So they even interested to make it as bad as possible, then "oops, you see guys how bad it is, we really need wipe, ok?".

I think main misconception from community about this developlment, that NQ still actually making game for players (so must be really bothered with feedback or do other things positivly contributing to overall success).

I doubt it. As I see it, its now pretty much simulation of development/surivaval/waiting game for at least several years now. Like even latest conference video, look how sad they are, forced to pretend to be exited or something. Entropy face alone like "please, adventurer, end my misery". I doubt they (actually) have any faith left themeselves in what they are doing (everyone can see all 200-300 people still playing).

So, as long Quanta Nick bankrolls whole thing (why is another question), it will stay same. Just slowly make something that looks like development moving forward, with fancy named updates (changing nothing, or even making it worse) and keep your linkedin profile ready.

At least, its my impression of actual sad logic behind all this. Why its happening.

Just gonna put out there, I don't remember auto-miners being promised during kickstarter, but I do remember Avatar vs Avatar combat and territory warfare ?

I'll go a step further, and point out the trailer for the game has none of this stuff mentioned, but territory warfare is still in there ?

tl;dw - none of this stuff is making me excited to play the game, when there are still glaring features missing (that are still advertised) to the point of being completely forgotten about by the community.

    this tbh

cities don't serve any purpose whatsoever with current mechanics. except for RP purposes maybe, but noone needs special "rooms" for anything in the game right now. you don't need gathering halls, tactical command centers or anything alike. nothing a city provides serves any purpose. Same goes for spacestations. All players really need is storage and landing pads. Everything else is completely useless

    EDIT:
oh and besides the technical limitation of the single shard server - I very much doubt that cities will ever work where more than 2000 ppl concurrently do stuff within 1km of each other. lagfest ftw. see market 6

I see no future for game without full wipe. It was pretty much predestined from mucked up Beta Launch.

There is 2 principal reasons (to degree when 1 of them is already enough):

    1) Game population too low to be viable on subs level -- it will demand very good restart, adverts/hype, attracting tens of thousands of players (to form big enough re-vitalazing wave), these new people will be not interested to jump into world with 3 years of hoarded assets against them (at best, if launch is really 2022), maybe more. No ammount of mental acrobatics will help against fact, that people like to join fresh starts more, especialy if its persistant and competive setting.

    2) Game itself not viable without good territory warfare, but current world disign on many layers not support it -- size of planets, resources, starting locations, contested grounds -- all must be reworked. But its makes very little sense with people brining in picture trillions of assets or even holding all current tiles, sometimes with armies of alts (issue likely be endemic during passive mining update).

NQ obviosuly super interested in keeping it silent, because they need at least current token population until real deal is ready.

If they manage to do something of DU long-term without wipe, I will be super suprised.

It demands certain critical mass of people and hype to kickstart "political" layer on sustainable level (with all kind of people creating groups and dreaming to dominate world). Old players mostly burned out at this point or too few. So NQ need new ones.

Considering DU "release" (even if rather techincal event by itself, more importanly -- serious advert mobilization possibility) at best in 2022, maybe 2023, it means, that.. whole thing will go to next round of life cycle with like 3-4 years old legacy of several hundred most stubborn people grinded out immense ammounts of assets, billions, trillions, all competitivly important skills etc.

I find this ultra questionable for any meaningful restart, but people obviously have tantrums just hearing W-word.

Still, personaly I kinda burned out on game become sort of Landmark-2 where few people grind and build just for sake of it in near-singlplayer, bubbled alienated experience, sitting in immensly large, but immensly empty 3d space/world.
