Without successful KS getting all other money prob be much harder/impossible. Its critical.

I think, yes. Because now, retrospectively, its clear, that:

    1) NQ entered KS almost empty handed on development progress (with barely most basic prototype of tech), this why they spend years in agony making it work, not work on proper game systems > see 2) / 3);
    2) lot of promised features (hello atmo combat) were put just to push KS money, without any idea how to do them (''figure something out later''), then it never was time for them > see 1).
    3) completely unrealistic dates for KS delivery, considering state of affairs they jumped in, 200% they knew it in terms of internal capability, so re-scheduling was certainly pre-planned, on grounds that people can eat it (like they always do on KS);

So it was lying and foul play from moment zero, even if ''good intentions'' to actually make a game ''somehow'' in future. Overpraising is when you legibly believe goals are realistic. They knew they are not -- just decided to give it a run anyway in dirty way. But its backfired.

I am more fascinated by how every one of those "revolutionary future tech" web3 portal tech demo/game sites, manage to look like it is some type of early year 2000 style game or CGI from The Lawnmower Man movie.

Call me crazy, but the trees and terrain in pictures and videos on their fantasy section look like it's the unigine engine.
Compare this to the Unigine Valley benchmark:

Edit: It's Unreal Engine 5, mentioned in the telegram link, before you join. I had made the thesis because both DU and the Unreal Engine use the Quixel Megascans.

I think NQ has giving up on DU a long time ago, it is now a side hustle then can do when the other games compile and for shits and giggles of cause. nothing more nothing less.
The cost is properly absorbed in other project as they share resources, other wise it would just be a waste of resources.

conspiracy theory: It is test to see how long they can string players along and still make them pay, but even that fails as most left in 0.23

    edit:

The lying started for me right at the start of beta. They had videos showing territory warfare and atmo-pvp. Both don't exist to this point in time. After several years. And that was under JC. They were just making things up without having anything to back it up. For me that is lying because they knew they had nothing but were still using it as an advertisment.

Well.. as a start, don't build an MMO on cloudfront.

Someone here said they shouldn't have worked on PvP. Well.... The first thing NQ (JC) said when after they finished their prototype is that they will be working on atmo pvp. They didn't of course.

The whole idea of the game, making cities, making a civilization, emergent sandbox blah blah blah...

Why does a city get built?
    1) protection against outside dangers
    2) quick access to resources / commodities
    3) trading is easier and safer
    4) social rules
    5) a city is a bastion and safe haven that controls the surrounding lands

I can go on... The point is there are social / political / evolutionary pressures that cause people to get together to create trading hubs, towns, cities. The city exists because it has to, it has a vital organizational purpose, it doesn't just appear because someone wants to make a pretty building.

DU pvp is basically optional, there is no danger from anything. There's no pressure of any kind. People don't have social interactions that are complex enough to force them to start thinking about cities — because cities don't matter.

Plenty of people have built fancy hubs. Some people have used them because they were fancy or somewhat convenient. But at the end of the day they are all empty voxel art, they do not matter, they do not affect anything. Every person in the game can build their own castle / city without consequence. The game is devoid of any necessary preconditions that makes social organization emergent enough so as to make cities necessary.

There's no pvp danger to hide from, there's nothing in pve to defend against. Resources are plenty, no one needs to rent a house at some voxel city, they can always build their own.

In short focus on pve elements, voxelmancy, making sure everyone gets what they want immediately... It devalues the sandbox and devalues what is made in the sandbox. Because it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things.

Ow... And don't build an mmo on cloudfront.

The fact that you can post this and not get a ton of replies telling you that you'd be mad to sub for 12 months because the game is dead tells us everything we need to know about the current state of DU.

I didn't expect my topic to make the discussion last so long and address all these different subjects (which remain very interesting, so continue).

I hope that NQ's next project will completely detach itself from the "emergent gameplay" side or the metaverse.

They proved that they were completely incompetent, not on the technique, which I cannot judge, but on the very principle of this operating system.

Jean-Christophe Baillie, even if he certainly had a huge share of responsibility in the failure of the project, was the person who had the vision that corresponded to the reality of what emergent gameplay should be.

I will have for proof of it the multiple DevBlog edited years ago with mechanics described in detail and more than deepened. Nothing was respected.

And here we are before this bitter failure.

BUT 2023 seems to be a good year for MMOs, there are new projects with veterans coming out. Maybe elsewhere, a vision close to that of JC will hatch on another theme.

We sure can, we have 8 years of experience with NQ/DU, plenty of time to see how they operate. On top of that the game IS finished, they did a launch and it is sold as finished on Steam.

    1. no troll posts here, you might not like it but The reality is that:
    - NQ CEO and staff has confirmed that they have other priorities.
    - Lack of updates and and improvements over 8 years
    - Lack of follow through on errors and exploits
    - Not talking to and/or insulting the community with weak stuff
    - Crating there own game in 0.23 0.24 and so on despite plenty warnings
    - Blind coping EvE with out understanding the deeper reasoning EvE does X
    - Not finishing what they do and leave countless big and small errors, it a dangerous attitude that will come back and rip you arms off
    - reducing server power.

These are just some of my observations, you can dislike it and call it a troll post but it is based on facts collected over time.

What i dont is why NQ doesn't just fold and cut there costs.

But NQ isn't really working on DU anymore, so....you literally care more about seeing the game improve than they do. It isn't going to change, certainly not anytime soon.

We're talking about a game that has had fewer and fewer DAUs since release -- a steady, linear decline driven by churn that's never shown even a hint of reversing or even plateuing.

NQ has been clear that their focus is on a new gaming project, not DU.

Whatever ideas you have about improving the game are not going to be listened to...and even if they are, whatever skeleton crew is still working on DU isn't going to be in a hurry to patch the game because it has no commercial future at all.

My suggestion is to not post ideas here, because this idea that NQ is trying to make this game work long-term isn't based on reality and fact. All evidence points to the idea that they've given up on DU and are focused on new projects.

Only intrigue is to wait out what be final stroke of this drama -- I still waiting some "metaverse" ultra-cringe news, like now DU becomes google earth with own crypto and you can buy plot of land to build some voxel shit on it.

Considering the insane amount of scams and issues in Crypto I hope they pass more legislation. I haven't met a single average person that Crypto has impacted positively... the few people I knew who invested lost A LOT, lost most of it.

I'm all for a NFT Crypto game, just don't taint it by trying to tie it into an unregulated financial service, aka coins 4 cash. And if game companies did that, they wouldn't need to sign that letter or worry about financial regulations. Nothing stops them from selling traditional MTX tied to an item on the block chain to ensure authenticity. It only gets dicey when they add the ability to cash out tokens for money... that invites all the money laundering and other financial crimes.

'It's a fun game that also makes you money' - Logan Paul, founder of Crypto Zoo game/scam.

Crypto bros have lead sheep to the largest scams in the history of human civilization. You just have to tell the sheep to hodl, and they won't know your fleecing them, such a neat trick.

"By number of Ponzi schemes there are way more in crypto, kinda per capita, than in other places." - Sam Bankman Fried

Hey, didn't NQ just spend years to deliver a game that wasn't as advertised? With kickstarter items still not shipped on a game that launched last year? With many customers calling it a scam because of these and many other valid issues? NQ will fit right in then.

The only point to playing is to throw money at NQ so they can spend it elsewhere 🤷‍♂️  Not exactly the most honest way to run a studio, but I guess that's how they approach PR in general.

As for their other project, here's what their CEO posted a few hours ago:

NQ's higher ups don't view DU the same as players.

To them, it's still a stroke of genius and all about "breaking boundaries" and innovation. This is how web3/crypto people think, though -- they don't care about use case or implementation or game design or anything else that exists in the real world. These sorts can't distinguish between "innovative" and "good" -- novelty isn't always intelligent.

This general lack of humility is why NQ's next venture will turn out no different than their previous one. They still don't understand why game design matters more than tech or innovation...and it's shocking to me that they'd actually work on another game with this mindset, having learned nothing from the last 8 years of failure.

If all you can see is how great you are, you'll never learn from past mistakes -- and NQ has shown over and over that they don't learn from past mistakes.

Well, its what some people seen in one way or another for years (with more evidence or less, relying on gut feeling, experience with game industry), some were better in formulating it, then others. All this discussions, about economy, wipes, population. At core it was about is NQ to be believed or not (obviously - not).

Early whistleblowers, like Blaze, had it hard, with more conformistic players attacking them.

Now its pretty clear to almost everyone, but some super die-hard fanatics.

What they forget is that if you want to be succesfull in masses you dont need high quality perfect voxel works, you need simple everyone can do it from tech advanced to 12 year olds with no computer experience.
If you want what is said by NQ to actually work yu need to concider making it as simple as sims.  A sims on different worlds with a world portal in every home would do it, with direct acces to other worlds all fully build on a preset by the developer.  Just like in the first Lego movie, any subject you can use should be a world, syfy, western, film noir, Umbrella corp.....  The idea is as simple as that but the actual development will be hell if you want to do it from scratch and dont want to pay high server costs and are too cheapassed to build your own data center with high class server accessability.

In short, unless backed by someone like Gates or Musk you will have a hard time. You dont need the wizzkids as sups you need the bored house wives/men. And if you cannot develop for that group, forget it.

Allioth and Madis are the only two planets that have lost claimed tiles over time.  And I would interpret this as the core players are the ones still sticking around.  personally I am not so concerned about the number of players.  Other then low player count means less money, less money means less money going into development and keeping the lights on. We know NQ can turn up and lower server performance. And the way the game has been running seems like they got it running at a bare minimum.

I am more concerned about the lack of development. We are over half a year now on release, And the amount of features that have been added to the game are pretty lackluster. I am not a programmer But I do have over 50,000 hours of game time. And I said it during early beta. Where are the patches that add features?  And when you compare it to the below picture patches released by NQ and patches released by a game that only has one developer. The one guy is doing more then the entire NQ team. So either the team is incompetent, Or the team is one guy, or the team is working on not DU. Right now we are being dragged along on the PVE promise. But NQ's track record does not look great.

    Edit forgot to add picture:

Completely agree that they planned for the wipe for a long time.  It makes a lot of sense of things that happened over that time (for example the schematic giveaway not being rolled back).  It makes me quite distrustful of the company as a whole and makes me think that taking my money and using it to fund other projects while running DU on a shoestring knowing it will be short lived is definitely something they would do.

We talked over years many times about this. Its pretty much still social game with almost zero social tools. And community page just meme example, its 1000 more low dev effort things NQ never even considered.
