As Shynras (and previously JC) said, the game will be easy to learn, hard to master. From pre-alpha videos it seems to be easy enough for anyone. Actually, building tools look already nice and with some improvements they have on the roadmap it will be really easy to start playing.

Now, the second part. While Twerk is right about the technical informations, I must agree that some players are overthinking it and posting various ideas. And tons of them are simply wrong (during development you have to filter thousands of bad ideas to get few good ones). But don't worry, the devs have clear vision and they are making logical decisions WHEN they are needed.

    Hi Everyone,

I realize that this was posted before, but for the life of me, I can't seem to find the original thread. If this one could be merged with that one if it is ever found I would appreciate it :-)

I wanted to give up an update about the Community Discord that we've been hosting :-)

It is a non-official community discord that several of us from this forum set up several months ago, but we've done our best to uphold the spirit of Dual Universe within it and to bring as many people as possible together under one place where we can chat openly about the game.

We're now at 317 Members in Discord from all sorts of alliances and groups. Kickstarter was certainly an exciting, if not stressful, time for all of us in Discord. I also find it amazing that we still manage to find something to talk about every day surrounding Dual Universe.

There have been squabbles and rants back and forth, but I think it's refreshing to see people settle out their differences in real-time, and ultimately realize that we're all in the same boat heading towards Alpha/Beta/Release.

I look forward to continuing this trend of open discussions and keeping everyone enthusiastic through this long wait ahead :-)

For those that aren't currently aware of the Discord that I'm referring to:

Coming at this question from my perspective as a DevOps Engineer (I'm a Senior DevOps Engineer for a fairly well-known software company that creates tools for developers, there's a chance NQ might even be using our software.)...

Server Hosting and Code Delivery Infrastructure should absolutely be the highest priority. This list needs to be addressed (which I'm sure it has, but who knows to what extent) before any executables are ever delivered to the Alpha Testing group. I firmly believe that the state of these things will determine the quality of the end-user experience, and these aren't things that should be an afterthought (which is why I don't doubt many of these have already been addressed, or are in the process of being addressed).

That includes (in no particular order because I'm too sleepy to think or debate about which one of these is the most important):
Deployment and Cluster Management Automation - (This one is most likely already taken care of for the game server architecture, and I have to believe the other servers that NQ is hosting aren't getting code deployed to them manually all the time) Monitoring - (And an on-call escalation path, if a server endpoint goes down in the middle of the night, who is going to get the notification, how are they going to get it, and what kind of SLA's will NQ need to meet?) Continuous Integration - (Another one that is very likely being addressed already, because nobody in their right mind ships software in 2016 without CI) Continuous Delivery - (Continuous Delivery is the ability to get changes of all types—including new features, configuration changes, bug fixes and experiments—into production, or into the hands of users, safely and quickly in a sustainable way. Many of the items on this list fall under CD) Continuous/Automated Testing - (Before code goes into production, there should be some health checks) Server Hardening - (anything public facing at the very least, but this one kind of goes without saying...) PagerDuty - (or a similar platform that provides those kinds of notifications) Failover Planning - (or just a mechanism for failovers period, like replicated database slave nodes, etc) Backup and Recovery Planning (there should probably be a plan in place for handling server compromises ahead of time) Internal Documentation for every system that goes into production - (When the engineers get a call at 4am that the servers are offline, documentation can either be one of the most helpful things available, or one of the least helpful if done poorly) Dev - Staging - Production environments - (I imagine this would be the test server, and ideally there should be a dev environment that mirrors production just to validate that everything works properly before being delivered upstream)
I am cognizant of the fact that this thread is about gameplay features, however, so my personal preference list would be...

Client Stability Skill Mechanics Sound Effects Materials and their Textures UI customization LUA Functions Documentation Engineering Mechanics (Wiring, Power Sources, etc.) Multi-Crew Ship Features First-Person Combat Weaponry CvC

If you could prioritize the next few features in DU, what would you choose? Let's assume the features listed in the Kickstarter starting goal are already in, what would you like after that? (in order of preference)

Please make a single post with your list; the idea box is for discussing the different features. also feel free to come back and edit your list as your priorities change.
CvC In game voice (chat to others within 20m, hail other ships) tracks/tracked element for elevators/trains Salvage constructs Star-maps Stargates Replenishable resources: Tree growing/Farming Some Cosmetic elements (e.g. cat ears for player models) Moving parts: joints, rotors and pistons Edit: Feel free to add your own, it is not limited to just this list

If you're looking for people to run with for Alpha/Beta and stick to doing your own thing - join Alpha Academy.

If you want to do your own thing, but also be involved in a community, then there are several to choose from on the Community Portal here - https://community.dualthegame.com/

All that said, take your time. There is no reason to rush head first in to a present community with where the games development currently is. We're in for a long, rocky road now that the Kickstarter is done and while we wait until Alpha. So choose who you want to interact with carefully.

    Thanks,
    Cybrex

Forget the promises made for distant future. If you have alpha/beta access, join Alpha Academy, org where you can play & test with others as soon as alpha starts and decide what exactly will you do much later. No promises, no commitments, no limits. After release you can keep playing with those you met or just do whatever you want.

It is true that we at Cinderfall do embrace all forms of playstyles. Our primary purpose is to be a hub of civilization and promote cooperation throughout all of Dual Universe. We've brought together many of DU's most prominent organizations together as a team and family, but of course we do need many motivated builders, soldiers, and of course Exploration Prospectors to help us reach that vision as well.

    Plus we have catnip cookies.

    Its really not that crazy.
Non Disclosure Agreements are pretty standard in game testing. There are still a few games where I'm technically still under NDA despite these games having released already.

I understand the need for testing expansions but I'm not a big fan of letting the community do it. All too often I have seen content being released where testers intentionally left in exploits to have an advantage.

Only if we decide to have it. Such rules of war may not exist in DU, as I doubt there will be an equivalent of the UN to enforce anything on a nation that refuses to comply.

An org in DU is not just a corporation, it could be a political entity, a nation, a school, a hovercraft racing league, a single ships crew, an entire gang of ships, a bank, a mafia etc.  Anything that could be seen as a group of people getting together.

While I do not mind such a feature being present in the game, I do question any organisation using it as it will limit the members ability to enjoy the excitement of also being in, for example, the number one hovercraft racing team in the galaxy.  Limiting org membership also does not hinder spies in any way.

I prefer freedom, as such everyone has the freedom to choose to limit their own freedom.  To each their own.

Novaquark, could you please do following things?

    1) add community portal and devblog button to top bar on forum (so we can get there more easily)
    2) add option so we can receive news from devblog to our emails
    3) post "Weekly Update" on devblog (and send to email) where you can tell us what are you working on, what troubles are you facing, what you are planning,... communicate with us:) I'm sure you are planning such thing, but now it's about week after KS campaign with no news. We can't wait to hear and see more stuff so we can post about it on forums, chat on discord, etc.

I believe another reason for not having orbiting planets (besides all that add complexity) is that planets could effectively crash into ships/stations parked in space. Imagine a space station or large ship "accidentally" nudged into the path of a planet.

If NQ decides to add personal lockboxes to the game. Wich I think they will then residential areas will be a thing.

In the beginning we will see the evolution from hamlet to village to town to city depending on facilities and population size. But eventually I see no reason why there wouldnt be skyscrapers and such.

You will need a place to store your goods.

I'm more concerned with things like doors and parking space. You'll need to recognise your hovercraft out of a couple of dozen and remember where your appartment is.

Hi! I just saw this game and I'm really bummed I missed the kick starter but I want to still get involved! I used to play EVE Online which is also a spaceship game. I really liked the action in EVE Online and I'd love to get in a group like that her, but a couple of the groups I have looked at have been either super strict or rally wacky and not serious. Are there any groups for privateering/piracy that are actually a little bit honorable? Or any big groups that have a subgroup like that?

The Brethren       Honor, glory, freedom. Who owns land? Simple diplomats, autocrats and democrats. Who owns the sky and space above? We do. Pirates don't need to meddle with paperwork or long boring discussions. We are free to roam where we call home! The sky above us, and any who dare enter our home will know the risk. We take the pirate way back to the old times on earth. Pirates need captains, and captains need crews! Have you got what it takes to lead a band of pirates? Or will you instead be a loyal member to your crew in your journey for glory? Will your ship be feared by all? Will people tremble at the sound of your name? Perhaps one day they will. It takes a lot of work, it takes a strong captain, and an even stronger crew, but who is to stop anyone from becoming legend?     Crews: After that amazing speech, I know you want to know more about how this works and what YOU can do to become part of it. Firstly, offical crews exist of at least 1 captain and 4 crewmembers. Why is that you might ask. To truly become a legend you need to be more than one person. A captain needs a crew, and a crew needs a captain. When becoming an official crew you can name your ship and you become an official Pirate ship of The Brethren.   You are always allowed to pillage and plunder even if you are not an official crew. You can do this to create a name for yourself and through that you can gain new crewmembers. Remember, people want a strong leader! There are no limits as to how big a crew may be, just know there can only be one captain per crew. You are allowed to work together with other pirate crews and their captain. But you will always be seperate entities, as there can only be one captain per ship. Think of the possibilities! There is nothing stopping you from becoming the greatest captain that ever lived! You might become as famous as Blackbeard himself, who knows. No one will stop you from commanding other pirate ships either. You can have other ships with their own captains under your command, just know it is up to you to negotiate terms of such an agreement.   What do I and my fellow admins do in this organisation? Not much game related stuff. We are in charge of PR, recruitment and such. If there are quarrels we will not necessarily intervene. You should all be able to handle quarrels with eachother.   What is in it for you? A pirate community that wishes to create the most hardcore pirate crews in history. A place where you can be yourself, but you don't have to be scruffy or say Arrr all the time. This is not about pirates as we see them in most movies. We take freedom seriously and we know what freedom truly is. Our freedom does not come at the cost of others freedom. We will not attack people in their homes, we will let them know, that they will get plundered if they tresspass our home. You will be with a crew that all have the same goal. Plunder and pillage. A Pirate ship and the captain decides how treasure should be delegated to the crew, but know that you all fight to become rich. (And to pay that monthly subscription).   Join us and the rest of the crew at our Discord, where you can ask all the questions you like: https://discord.gg/NkB8EQu   We are searching for Crewmembers!
