Okay even ignoring whatever the devs throw into DU in a PVE catagory, how hard would it be to simulate PVE with LUA? I am sure that there are going to be some heavy RP places like there are in other sandbox games.

I doubt the alpha phases will change how NQ addresses the community.  I imagine they will continue to come out with monthly dev diaries.  Which is what we have been content with for quite some time now.  It's entirely possible they will give out little reports of each test as stated by other users... but we just don't know ^^

ATV is the Alpha Team Vanguard set of members, chosen because of community involvement, and a few other sets of parameters.
So naturally, the ATV test was when the ATV members were able to test the game.

there is a discussion about a change of two? Really?? It could be anything from a credit card being over limit to someone being over budget, a Xsolla error, or a dozen other choices that come to mind. Two is not shocking, if you were talking 200 then there would be something to discuss. As it is well within any industries variance statistics.
Let's discuss something important like when we can expect the link to download DU

^^ hardly the only downfall, and it's not just one brand or the other, the tech isn't even close to being practical yet.

    Rant inbound:

    Debbie Downer says...

I'm excited for VR, but the technology still has a very long way to go before it actually gets even remotely good. Someone mentioned being able to virtually grab a virtual throttle control and virtual joystick, instead of actually grabbing a physical throttle control and joystick. Huh? VR can't provide physical feedback yet can it? I'd much rather have a physical flight stick in my hands, than nothing at all. Console makers have tried basic VR over and over again with their sports games. Pulling the virtual string of a bow was kinda silly. Aiming with a virtual bow... sucked. There was a boxing game where you punched the air, or your buddy, and it mysteriously translated into punching something on the screen. Bowling was kinda fun, but only because it was a novelty at the time. I had lots of laughs with those games but only because people would hit their heads on ceiling fans while spiking a volleyball, or trip over couches, knock over lamps, kick the dog... all manner of hysterical happenings, none of which improved the game interface, not even a little bit.

And accuracy... I don't know of anything that is more accurate than a mouse click... it's better than 1 pixel perfect. The console generation has been brainwashed into thinking that game pads are good. Game pads are good for lounging on the couch, eating Cheetos, and casually playing Madden 9000 or any other game that you don't have to aim at anything. The auto-aiming assist of console games makes players "think" they're actually aiming, but the reality is, aiming accuracy with a game pad is atrocious. There are even game controllers shaped like assault rifles so as to improve accuracy and provide a true VR experience. Yeah, no, that turned out to be utter nonsense too. Pointing your assault rifle at a tv was deemed gimmicky with Duck Hunt. Which brings me back to VR.

Visually speaking, it can be pretty amazing, but that isn't really VR, it's just low res 3D. Other than that though, where is the draw? Where are the practical advantages for gaming? I have to use my whole head to look around, and pray the tracking works? I get to flail my arms around hoping to trigger a simple interaction with an in game object? I have to march in place to actually move? Most VR sets that I see now come with hand held "sensors". Shocking. Right back to the game pad.

TL;DR: Light years from now, when it's finally done right, the immersion factor of VR will be incredible. Right now though, it's just a really overpriced 3D headset and a couple of game pads.

They have said there there are probably going to be server wipes during at least Pre-Alpha and Alpha, but the goal (I don't know if it's working yet) is for any blueprints of constructs that you have made to persist until full game release so that you don't lose design(/coding?) time.

I would also suspect the same. It's a shame that people who arrived late don't have access to the starter packs, but on the other hand, you have to reward your long-term backers.

That reminds me about empyrion and that's OK that you have to maintain your energy, oxygen and other things to stay alive. And it's fine that if you abandon the base, it won't be able to protect itself. The same in EVE with POS system - you need to fuel it with two types of resources to be able to defend it. In eve this is not an issue as you can fuel it for 1 month. In empyrion it depends on how many fuel tanks you place, so that is still fine for me.
I was thinking about some idea of being able to send your goods to some secure storage with kind of 'special delivery service' that will take much time to deliver your goods to the storage and the same to get them out, but you won't lose them. But it's just my imagination

As for changing game rules - that is common for any actively updated MMO with only note - that key mechanics shouldn't be changed without notification so people will have time to adjust.

Just a small explanations about being able to play solo - I don't tell that I will never join any ally or corporation, but I need to know that if for some reasons I won't find correct corporation for me, I would be still be able to play on my own.
ah, so I'm late already Then I guess no rush for now. Let's hope the new packs won't be much more expensive than previous ones.

    It's not their own decision.

@NQ-Nyzaltar will probably give you a longer explanation (but it's NDA for me).

    I disagree.

Risk vs. Reward. It's way easier in EVE to do stuff like that because the RDMS there is shit. But even if it's done in DU, then the CEO is to blame because he didn't put enough thought into safety and how to prevent awoxing.

DACs can't be abused.  End of story.

It's a tried and true system, if you don't like it... tough I guess.

In my experience the true "whales" you speak of are those who sit and play the market profiting off of others.  The people who buy DACs/PLEX?  Those who need a quick fix, and not enough time to play for the creds.

So to eliminate your whale problem, they'd have to eliminate the re-sale of DACs.  No thanks.

Once you start playing a game, it's a lot easier to make money by being smart than it is by dumping fortunes into the game.

Indeed, there is really no more need for this kind of discussion. NQ has pretty clearly laid out how they want to proceed with monetization, and even though they are borrowing from EVE's system, enough of DU is wildly different form EVE that I don't think this is really going to be an issue. Even at release, there is no way that the player population will be able to support players (plural) injecting $200 worth of DAC into the market at a time and still value the DAC highly as a commodity. We have no idea how much quanta will actually be floating around, or how easy it will be to get given that its introduction to the market will be carefully restricted. NPC's will not be a bottomless supply of money in DU, that makes it pretty much impossible to compare the two game's economies, especially since the DU economy hasn't formed yet.

Plus DU has to go through alpha AND beta before DAC's even exist in the economy. Whole versions of the game will be playable without the impact of DAC's whatsoever.

Given that Quanta will not be readily available, and that we don't really know what the capacity will be for the NPC traders to distribute quanta, I suspect that DAC's will likely be traded for raw or finished goods instead, or as payment for a fulfilled contract. *mostly* I suspect it'll boil down to DAC's being traded for time not spent mining/refining material. I suspect that the players that are willing to inject money into DAC's as a currency will be using it to "catch up" to players who have more free time, probably professionals and/or people with a family or other hobbies (like myself).

Now that being said, this has been discussed to death, but there isn't going to be a way to form a valid argument that the monetization scheme is somehow bad for players without any good data. DU is different enough from EVE that data from EVE is bad data.

Welcome to like 90% of the action here in Dual Universe. The meta-game that has developed (I say meta-game, I don't really consider it such) is one that is unprecedented in a game that has yet to be released. We've already witnessed the rise and fall of organizations, the fracturing of others, and continually more organizations are added to the roster every day. I would take a look at DUSleepers.fr , Cinderfall TV, GLSU's Q-Cast, and Kurock's State of Affairs on Outpost Zebra to see just some of the major action that's been happening. Other subjects to explore would be: Terran Union, The Eldritch Nation/Order, Unity League, Cinderfall Syndicate, Vanguard, to name a few.

Although usually not very active on the forums, I just wanted to take a moment to send out my regards to the ATV team and NQ wishing you both the best of luck this weekend. This test marks a significant milestone in dual universe’s development, and the whole community is praying for your success.
In particular to the ATV team, remember you represent all of us, the players. We share the same hopes and dreams for dual universe but the responsibility to help make them happen falls on your shoulders. How you conduct yourselves over the next two days and the months to come will influence both the quality and timeline of development. For every bug you find, for every concept you critic, you are paving the way forward towards our dream. To my surprise each and every ATV member I have interacted with has been a commendable individual worthy of respect, donating both their time and expertise towards promoting the game. The time has finally come for you to contribute in earnest and show us what you are really made of. I know you will make us all proud.

I invite others to comment below and offer their words of encouragement to our first group of pioneers.

First things first, you should take a look at the Builder Guide on the wiki, we've spent considerable time refining it from the information we know now.

I wouldn't think of it as being given creative mode, but rather that to make testing things simpler, you will be skipping the mining and refining steps of the gameplay for the Pre-Alpha.

As far as how collecting resources will work, it seems that it will be more of a simple sphere, and maybe other shapes to dig into the ground, but you will have some tools like smoothing to round off edges and such while terraforming.  There is another whole type of voxel interaction which is building.  This involves editing a construct as defined by a construct.  This is where you will have a grid (if you want), and more precise tools.

As far as the tools involved, it seems to just be this detached style of mining where you are shown the area that will be mined and click a button to mine it.  There is no implementation of a personal drill to directly mine out the ground/resources at this time.

There will not be ship-based mining for balancing reasons.

How much mining for a small ship?  It depends on what materials you want to use to construct it.  There will be many options to use as the body (voxels) of a ship and that's not to mention the materials necessary for all of the elements involved.  In theory each of those resources would need to be scanned down, dug out, and refined into usable materials.  How long all of that takes is really yet to be truly determined as they refine the mechanics.

For a death star, remember that the entire volume of something you build has to be mined, and JC previously gave us a value of something like 52 m^3/s (check Twitter for actual number, not that it's final anyways).  Doing the math, it would take a rediculous amount of time for even hundreds of players to mine, refine, transport to orbit, and construct such a structure.  Imagine years most likely (for a 1:1 scale).

For refining of my materials, as I've mentioned above you absolutely have to refine the materials you mine out of the ground into something useable in a construct.  This mechanic has not been really defined, but imagine that it will involve inputting resources into a container that a refining element pulls from and dumps into another container.  This whole process would require power to run, and may only be possible on a static construct (TBD).  We created a list of known ores and refined materials here: https://dualuniverse.gamepedia.com/Resources

    Howdy folks!
Welcome back to the charts, I have once again started them and they will be posted, weekly, on Saturdays. This is to reduce the workload and stress that had been put on me.
The charts have been reduced by one, that I didn't think worked with the rest and caused me issues last go around, this was the growth compared to other organizations chart.
I have also made a few of the charts easier to read, like the unique member and total member count chart, with the addition of a count of total accumulation per week. This allows you to see how many new names are actually joining the organizations in the top ten, as well as who is just joining many organizations.

I have also included, within these sets, a data point from my last chart set - this is to see how much growth had occurred in my absence.

I have also made a discord, for those that want the charts immediately, or want to know when they are posted, with links and access to my archive folder.
    Visit the Discord here!

Please, use this to suggest new data sets, chat about the data or even just hang out to chat with people with various interests in this field.

With that all being said, I really want to thank you fine people for the support I received when this was still running, and I appreciate the continued support even when I wasn't.

And now, without further ado, the charts!

It would be strange indeed if ships flying in the atmosphere couldn't attack structures on the planet surface, or even engage player avatars. Anti-construct defenses on bases would have to be able to counter both flying ships and hovercraft. Anti-personnel turrets will also be needed.

We'll have to wait for the PVP implementation to see how it all works out.

Well, even the problem there with original IP's having an issue. If you want a sleek looking fighter that's both powerful and efficient, it's likely going to look awfully similar to something already existing either in fiction or RL. I could build you a fighter and someone come up and say, "Hey that looks like a Z-95 Head Hunter." Or, "That looks like an F-18 ect ect. Just look at Youtube's current system of DMCA claims. Designs are inspired by, if not modeled after or in some cases, straight carbon copy replicas. You would think, however, that in a game where it's all about player creative freedom to build whatever they want. If the entire population wants to fly around in X-wings. There's not really a whole lot that can be done about it from Disney, other than them telling the developers to delete all the ships that look like stuff from their IP. Then you could have any nation's air force even coming in and saying, "Hey those look like our jets. Get rid of them." So then we're stuck having to fly around in cubes. Where Star Trek comes in and says, "Hey those all borg cubes, get rid of them."

You see the conundrum that that opens up? I mean. Show me something that someone claims is completely 100% original in design, and I'll show you other designs that are similar enough you can make an argument that it's been used elsewhere.

It's really a problem with today's entertainment as a whole. Sure games, movies, TV shows have different stories. But the plots are all the same.

Maybe I'm just rambling at this point cause its 7 am. But hey could be a good topic to discuss.

There is a difference between ships being similar because they are the same type of craft and one being a replica of another.  You were asking about making replicas and legally the IP owner can choose to not allow that.  Disney in particular has the reputation of being fiercely protective of their IP.  What the players or developers would like this game to be does not change what the laws are.
