Atmosph3rik got a reaction from enjeyy in GETTING READY FOR 1.4? Dev Q&A Summary
You can already lose your ship in PVP though.  And someone else gets to keep the ship if they catch you too, so it's not just gone.

I think what DU is missing is a way for players to get their feet wet doing a bit of combat.  Without such a steep cost.

In other games replacing or repairing your ship is as easy as clicking a button and paying for it.  Replacing a ship is a lot more time consuming in DU.

I'm not so sure i like the idea of the ship being completely deleted from the game when someone loses.  That seems harsh.  The "cost" of replacing a ship completely is more than just Quanta.  It takes time and effort to gather all the parts and transport them.  And people develop an emotional bond with their ships (ok maybe that's just me😁)

They would also have to purchase another BP if the ship was DRM protected.  Which would increase the cost further.  I sell ship Blueprints too, so that would benefit me.  But i think people would be a lot less likely to bring a DRM protected ship into an instance, if they might lose it.

I think it would feel a lot less frustrating to lose a PVE mission if you got your ship back when it's over.  Even if it's a smoking pile of rubble.

Cost should be in Quanta, not frustration.

    Hello, Noveans!

During our most recent livestream, NQ-Deckard and NQ-Entropy joined us and answered questions about upcoming features in update 1.4, which will be coming soon to Dual Universe. We know you have many questions, and to make it easier for you to stay informed, we wanted to summarize what was shared.

    PvE Missions

We are excited to add PvE Combat missions in update 1.4, where players participate in missions against NPCs using familiar PvP mechanics. Here's an overview of what to expect in PvE Missions:

Difficulty Levels: Missions will have various difficulty levels, from very easy to very hard. Players can solo the lower tiers, but as the difficulty increases, players will need to team up to complete the missions using ships with a crew equipped with multiple sets of guns.

Challenging Gameplay: Even for experienced players, the higher-difficulty missions will be tough. Players will need to strategize and optimize their ships to achieve victory.

Customizable Mission Ships: Players must build their own mission ships within the parameters set by each mission. Restrictions may apply, such as not allowing large battleships in easy missions. Players can choose their preferred weapons, shields, and variants for their ships.

Instanced Battles: Missions will be instanced, using similar technology as VR challenges. However, players can now bring their own ships and enter the same instance alongside multiple other players. You must also supply your own ammunition, scrap, and fuel; any lost elements during the mission will be your loss.

Rewards: Completing missions will earn players quanta, addressing feedback requesting more ways to make in-game currency. PvE Combat provides an alternative method for players to fund their gameplay, similar to hauling missions.

Scaling Difficulty: The intention is for very easy missions to be accessible to new players with a few days of talents without requiring perfect equipment. As players progress to higher difficulties, missions become more demanding and require precise strategies.

Loss Consequences: We are currently finalizing what happens when players lose a mission, with the goal of not being overly punishing. One possibility is allowing players to salvage their ships if they fail a mission.

Mission Retreat: If players find a mission too difficult, they can retreat to the entry point to save their ship and resources. Completing the mission isn’t needed to escape.

More information about PvE Missions, including specifics on the consequences of losing a mission, will be provided as we develop and refine the feature.

    PvP Changes

We are implementing significant changes to our PvP mechanics, including:

We’re changing the tracking formula that runs hit or miss calculations, especially the impact of ship cross-sections on the formula. We expect this to shift the meta away from lighter ships with small cross-sections by removing the protection they currently enjoy from the low probability of being hit by medium and large guns.

We’re also adjusting most parts of PvP, with changes to systems such as base weapon stats and removing debuffs from weapon variants.

Shield venting is also being changed, and stasis weapons are being buffed to make them more powerful and relevant to their role, for instance, in tackling small ships that get caught.

We are also investigating server issues and lag in PvP. To help us address these problems, please submit detailed reports with player names, ship names, times, and any other relevant information when lag occurs. These issues are difficult for us to replicate on our end, and being specific in your reports will enable us to analyze our logs better.

    Planets

In Update 1.4, we aim to reintroduce two planets, each with exciting new features and locations:

Sicari: Retaining its original feel but visually enhanced with more interesting elements and a new location.

Sinnen: Completely reworked from the ground up and placed in a new location.

Following player feedback, we are experimenting with closer positioning for the new planets. Stay tuned for upcoming images showcasing these planets in the coming weeks.

Additionally, Update 1.4 will introduce three new Alien Core Units, enabling access to all types of plasma in the game.

    LUA Changes

We are implementing several updates to the Lua system, which may cause temporary disruptions but are essential for long-term improvements. Some changes include:

Update Lua version to 5.4.4 Slightly improve the syntax highlighting Fixed the boolean type to return 'true' or 'false' instead of 1 or 0. Seeking faster solutions for JSON encoding and decoding.
We've taken the opportunity to introduce some minor changes to radar to help filter signals.

We will have more detailed information coming on the Lua changes soon.

    Joystick Support

This feature has taken significantly more resources than we had anticipated, but it does look like we’ll have full joystick support in update 1.4.

Thanks for reading, Noveans. If you have any questions about the PVE Mission System, you can submit them to our upcoming PvE special episode of Ask Aphelia using this form and we’ll do our best to answer them.

Blockchains make sense for decentralised systems. But MMO's are usually hosted by a vendor with a central server or server grid constituting the single source of truth. In this case it is much better to permit and log all transactions server-side without excessive encryption.

    It is definitely a joke.

But all you need to do to have this "feature" is to only place standard square shaped voxels.

The voxels have the ability to take on many shapes, allowing us to build incredible unique constructs.  But you also have the option to just work with simple squares if you prefer that.

Atmosph3rik reacted to NQ-Nyota in INTRODUCING BOXELS!
    Hello Noveans!

We’re thrilled to introduce our newest, most innovative feature yet: Boxels!

For years, we’ve marveled at the boundless creative expression of our community using our voxel tech, from the reactor days of voxelmancy, to the VPT and beyond. Our players have built epic worlds, intricate machines, warships, factories, and flying insectoids. But, alas, even as we’ve enjoyed the countless masterpieces crafted, we couldn’t help but notice that something was wrong.

Our voxel technology, while enabling creative freedom, was paradoxically restricting the true artistic potential of our players. With a near-infinite number of possibilities, it was simply too daunting for players to express themselves properly. The number of choices was overwhelming, leaving players adrift in indecision while building in-game. That’s why we decided to think outside the voxel and give you: BOXELS!

We're upgrading our voxel building technology to Boxels, a set cubic shape for enhanced building in Dual Universe.

Here’s what our producer, NQ-Deckard has to say on Boxels:

“With DU's existing voxel systems, you have the freedom of moving any vertex of a voxel on a 3-dimensional 253-point grid; we do this in such a way to store a single 3D coordinate into 3 bytes of variable data.

But with our new Boxel technology, we've gone the extra mile to achieve higher levels of cubeness. As the Boxels are always just cubes, and nothing more than cubes, we decided to go above and beyond traditional precision for the never-changing corners of each Boxel by dedicating 4, 64bit, double precision floats to every single corner of every single Boxel. (The fourth one allows us to proudly say we are now the first 4D game!)

If you suffer the effects of high gas prices, don't worry, we've got you covered. Instead of using gas to heat your house, with Boxels, your CPU and Memory will now provide most of the heating your home requires.”

Boxels are your inner artist’s ticket to liberation from the oppressive chains of choice. No longer will you need to worry about crafting the perfect shape because our team of geometricians has created it for you! You’re guaranteed (but not actually guaranteed) to find the Boxel to meet your building needs.

With Boxels, you can confidently build knowing that our extensive (but not extensive) shapes library will ensure you’ll never feel overwhelmed by choice again!

We can’t wait to see your Boxel-based masterpieces in Helios. Stay tuned for more updates on our groundbreaking and innovative Boxel technology. Remember: When it comes to creative freedom, sometimes more is less!

    Happy Boxel-ing, Noveans.

    Yours Cubically,
    The Novaquark Team

Personally, i think an intelligent person would see the obvious danger in leaving the cover off a manhole and focus on solving the simple problem.   Rather than patting themselves on the back for not falling into it themselves.

A truly intelligent person would be confident enough in their own intelligence that they wouldn't want to set other people up for failure just to make themselves feel a bit smarter.

What was the "need" that was supposed to justify the wipe?

Now that it's over and done, In hindsight, what exactly did it solve or fix or improve?

They thought that wiping the game and launching it fresh on Steam would bring in more customers.  That's not a need, it's a hope.  They didn't need to wipe, they wanted to.  And their reasoning was wrong.  So whether we want to define it as a need or a want, it was a mistake either way.

All it accomplished was diminishing the product that they had already sold, to the people who were the most interested in it.

The biggest problem with the terrain voxels is that they're designed to simplify terrain shapes like valleys and mountains at a lower LOD.

They aren't designed to deal with more complicated shapes.  Or being edited in any way really.  So as soon as you touch the terrain with the terraforming tools, everything just looks like garbage from a distance.  I would love it if NQ would give us more fine control over the terrain voxels.  But i also wish they would work on helping us make the terrain look halfway decent, after we edit it.

The tool that i would really like is a terrain healing tool, that would replace terrain voxels that have been deleted, and revert everything back to the way it was originally.

I would also love it if there was a way to control the blending of terrain materials.  For whatever reason, when we place them, they don't seem to blend at all.

And a way to replace ground clutter too.  A lot of the terrain materials have ground clutter built into them, like grass and small flowers ect.  But when we place them, none of that is visible.

And the larger terrain elements like trees and rocks.  Even if we were just able to craft and deploy them as an element on a core.  It would be great if we had access to all of those assets to build with.

The thing is i was paying $10 a month in 1999 to play Everquest.  At the time that was a huge expense for me.  But i was willing to pay it because the game was new and there was nothing else like it.

But i don't have any interest in playing any of those new triple A rated MMOs, at any cost.  Even with all of its problems, DU is still a thousand times more interesting than any of those games.

I'm not saying i would pay more for what we have now.  I'm saying i would pay more if there was more to pay for.

Atmosph3rik reacted to ADCOne in Will DU ever be optimized? Can you please fix the LAG?
I have not read most of this since its a large amount of text and I am making short flights and need to watch my speed right now. However, my computer is not the best will run all the latest games I have played (at mid ish settings). So I have DU in lowest quality (Just about) and it runs fine for the most part, except when I am somewhere with a lot of constructs (Like a popular market) and this settles down once they have all loaded in, though its not perfect in a busy area. The only real change I made to make the game more stable is I set the NVIDA control panel to limit the frames to 60 fps, which seemed to make a massive difference in Beta (Not sure if that is still needed but why fix what is already working). The other thing that worked in beat was turning of the trajectory mode (press x until they are off - Again not sure if this issue still needed but I do it out of habit now once I am in an atmosphere).

As for 'excuses' for DU game issues. To my knowledge there is only one that matters, which is they simply have a small development team and need more time to get everything finished and in game. During Alpha / Beta there was a huge list of green lit idea's from the community and many of these are yet to enter the game (assuming these are still part of the intended finished product).

From my perspective I am not too worried about the current performance of the game nor the missing items as this is an MMO, which means as long as there is a player base the developers will keep adding the missing / new content for us. As is done in all MMO's. The important thing I think is to keep letting them know what is and is not working in a constructive way along with any suggestions we have since given time and hopefully success with the player base the game will evolve and become much more like people were hoping in Alpha, Beta and release. (Personally I just enjoy building the ships at present though I actually hope to try some PVP at some point - yes still on DU my bucket list).

    Hey community and dear NQ,

Reading this https://massivelyop.com/2023/02/17/leaderboard-do-you-prefer-first-person-or-third-person-perspective-while-gaming/ reminded me that at some point there was a feature list with a voting option and we had third person view with quite some support on the list. I personally find third person much more immersive and role play supporting and since this is not a shooter I really don't see any downsides. In addition, outfits and pets are nearly pointless in first person as you never see them actually. So I'd kindly suggest adding a third person camera as an option, so everybody can play as they wish.

    Thank you!

I think you're confusing the rarity of winning 1st place in a land race.  With the rarity of winning anything at all.

Just because you can't win 1st place, doesn't mean there isn't still a prize for 2nd, 3rd, 4th place etc.

Those 2nd and 3rd place territories are still out there.  And NQ has promised more races in the future.

If you decide not to join the race because you don't think you have a chance at 1st place anymore, that's on you.

I don't have any illusions that they are working on the game full-steam.   But someone is still working on the game.  And while we might never see AvA combat, that doesn't mean we won't see Territorial Warfare.  If we were to adjust our expectations as to what that might look like.

At this point DU has drawn in thousands of customers and then churned them back out several times.  They made all kinds of crazy promises and let people's imaginations run wild.  And it's done nothing but hurt the game's reputation.

But i love this game, as is.  I play it almost every day.  And i'd keep paying to play it for years if they keep up a reasonable trickle of new features and content.  In my opinion if they had focused on the fact that it's an incredible building game, and slowly built up a good reputation, the game would be a lot more successful than it is now.

I know the game isn't what a lot of people wanted, but it actually is the game that i wanted.

I still think NQ has the golden goose here.  They just need to stop fumbling around trying to make it something else, and give people a chance to appreciate it for what it is.

And to post what I posted over there:

To sum in up without having to read further. Random ore pools are not needed.

Dynamic ore pools would just suck.  Managing mining units as it is, is already time consuming. But if you had to constantly scan,  take down old mining units, rebuild at new locations, get calibration up on those new miners,   Move your space elevator, move your space stations.  Create new bookmarks, distribute bookmarks to all your haulers.  Rinse Repeat every week. No thank you.  This would have the effect on miners, as it did to industrialist when schematics came out.  And  while a planet can be scanned down in hours, its not effortless.  Its actually allot of work. and if you had to constantly do that...... same with setting up a mining platform.

Once all the planets come in. and more planets come in.  there will be plenty of ore for all who want it, and dynamic ore pools will not be needed.

And then you also have to consider territory warfare. Whatever that is going to end up being, and where that is even going to be possible.
