Yeah the guy who makes it his business transporting DACs to the outer rim will have balls so big that it makes it hard to fly his space ship.

Seriously though, if I go in on day one and find I have all my kickstarter DACs in my inventory and nowhere safe to store them I think that would be pretty shitty game design

You can expect that if players are mining by hand, that the process will probably go pretty fast and it'll be something like a 1-1 ratio of mined volume to usable volume.

People build some huge stuff in Minecraft mining by hand. I play on a SMALL private server (total population of 10) and we built cities, in vanilla. A full MMO game will have cities in a week.

If youre looking for a place and want to build up a civilization and not just your own private empire to be the nerd king of.

Here is a speel of my basic hopes and ambitions of cinderfall.
    --------------
The Cinderfall Syndicate is to create a high security and safe space within the game. Since the world will lack any form of forced safety that Non Player Character organisations provide such as in EVE.

Starting from Alioth, well build Emberstone a completely safe place, where noobies can come and get a grip, they dont have to join Cinderfall. We will try to explain the pros and cons of various organisations to people, even orgs that do not support the Cinderfall mission or sign on.

So we will make efforts to classify cities, areas, planets, solar systems, stargates, and miscellaneous with a simplistic security rating system to let people know the general value of a safe or dangerous place. We are legitimate so while others might tell you a place is safe, it might not actually be, Cinderfall will not lie about its security ratings you can trust them.

The Syndicate is a loose collection of organizations which agree to the Cinderfall mission. However just being a member does not necessarily make this a traditional alliance. An application process will be developed for bringing new organisations in, and the Syndicate Senate may at times vote new members into the syndicate at large or even onto the Senate itself. This senate does not control any relative aspect of players gaming experience but guides Cinderfall and its objectives, such as where to place hubs, how much sales tax a hub will have, the location of cinderfall stargates, and other various topics.
The JSDF will be expanded or shrink to cover the high security locations that are established as mentioned before. Its members will consist of the cinderfall primary members of the Magistratum or the JSDF as well as Syndicate members who join as a secondary citizen. If you haven't time for secondary responsibility within Cinderfall itself but are a member of the syndicate, your org may be cleared to have its own operational branch, or expeditionary force, under the authority of the JSDF.

The Magistratum will work as an effort to seek balance and harmony in the syndicate, and to do its best to help those even outside of the realm of civilization. A Magistratum Archive will be constructed in Emberstone where peoples may share or find information on various scripts that have been made, we want to improve the quality of the game for as many as possible. The primary role of the members of the Magistratum and thus Cinderfall is to provide conflict mediation based on philosophical guidelines the Magistratum coems up with in order to best serve everyone in keeping the game fun while actually solving problems as best we can.

I don't mean to be that guy, but you're kind of perpetuating the problem Anonymous highlighted earlier.

In any event, I will say that if you have a problem with the payment model for Dual Universe, you should probably message NQ Nyzaltar directly rather than post it on the forum. A lot of people here have very strong opinions about the topic, which often leads to schisms and people leaving the DU community.

Please - before there's another round of forum bashing people for having opinions, concerns or otherwise - let @NQ-Nyaltzar sort it out.

Flaming every thread about the business model in know way helps the community grow, discourages dialogue, and suppresses the free and frank exchange of ideas.

The OP, and @EagleOne in another thread had either valid concerns (which Devs have addressed - they don't need our help) or suggestions (which were flamed down rather than being taken on-board and passed on to NQ with a thanks for the idea) - frankly, the Community response has been a little disappointing.

It's going to be a long and lonely 2 years if we're not welcoming and constructive. Yes - the threads frustrate you all, but you win more friends with honey than with vinegar.

Halo381 reacted to Shynras in Regarding economy, currency and NPCs
    As you may know:

In short, the economy start with 0 credits. NPCs at the start of the game will give us credits for raw materials, up to a certain point, where those NPCs will be removed. Then there'll be a limited amount of credits, that will make the economy.

    Doubts:

    - After some time, some people may stop playing, abandoning a character with credits in it.
    - Some people may accumulate a huge amount of credits, without spending them. In that case the economy run with much less credits. If credits are more rare, prices for stuff are lower, and at a certain point, those rich guys may use all their credits buy all the stuff they can, at a lower price than usual. At that point there'll be again a large influx of credits in the economy, that will rise the prices up again, so those people will make profit out of this phenomenon. Sorry if I couldn't explain this better, but my english is limited.
-Adding again NPCs in the future (or even at the beginning), is something that comes from the devs. I feel is too much of an intrusion in a game made by players. It defines the economy too much.

The first problem regard the natural loss of credits over time: a guy that stops playing, another that changes account, or wathever. This may be fixed by adding again NPCs temporarily to resupply credits up to the original amount.
The second is a problem caused by the static amount of credits in game, and the one-off random resupply, decided by devs.
The third pretty much explain itself.

In other games we usually have NPCs, that create credits, what are called gold-sinks, to remove them. This usually mantains a stable economy, if done properly. It is artificially balanced.
In a game like DU ofc this can't work, since there are not even NPCs that gives quests or something like that. The devs idea may be a solution, but a little basic and with problems imho. So what's the solution?

Create a rare resource that we can craft credits with. Example:

-Gold is a rare resource. You can craft, with a recipe, an X amount of credits with a single ingot.
-Gold is a resource needed to craft a fundamental element, like the construct cores. It will always be important and have a value in game.
-The price to buy an ingot of gold from other players will never be less than X credits, but higher, simply because you can just craft yourself X credits from an ingot. Let's say an ingot is worth Y credits. Y > X always.
-This kills inflation. When there's a ton of credits in the economy, the price of all resources go up naturally, gold included. This means that is not convenient for people to craft credits with the recipe, because they would get only X amount of credits, that is a lot less than Y, so a fewer people will "create" credits, letting the natural loss of credits reduce the inflation naturally.  Viceversa, if there's not enough currency in the system, Y is a lot closer to X, so people are more incentivized by using the recipe, and new crafted credits will flow into the economy. Wait, there's something wierd....If Y>X always, why would someone ever think about using the recipe to craft credits? Because of two reasons: Trade fees and wait time: If you sell stuff, you're probably using a market element, maybe in a city, maybe in a station, and you'll have to pay taxes on your trades to the owner. When the difference between X and Y is small enough, crafting credits is more convenient than selling gold.  "Wait time" instead is referred to you having to wait for a buyer, instead of having credits instantly by crafting them; consider that with high inflation there are more buyers (more money in circle, people are more incentivized on buying stuff despite mining/crafting by their own), so the wait time is smaller, so isn't a problem and you would sell gold instead of crafting credits, while with low inflation, you may have to wait quite a bit to find a buyer, because there is less currency in the economy than normal, so you're more incentivized to craft credits. Everything works perfectly and balance itself naturally. Sorry if it's a bit confused, I hope you understood.
-No need for NPCs, no need to balance the economy artificially, by force, adding or removing credits.
-If someone accumulates a huge amount of credits over time, the economy is not going to be affected, so that people can't play with the economy, creating instability. Not that easily at least.
-People are not going to be chained to the arkship forever, where the NPCs are. You can craft credits anywhere supposed you have the gold.
-Incentivize mining, pirating, and stuff like that. Gold has a value just because you can make credits out of it, and every other resources will have a balanced price relative to the gold rarity, and their usefulness.
-The fixed amount of credits in game depends on the amount of active players, that defines the amount of trades. With the system I propose, this gets automatically balanced. Because less/more players means less/more mining, other than less/more trades. So credits will always be proportional to the amount of trades, and the amount of players.
-Credits resupply/removal needs to be applied gradually, constantly over time, not by a one-time temporary reintroduction of NPCs. The economy is stable, you don't see large influx of credits over a certain period of time. Prices are more stable.
    - And more

EDIT: If the natural loss of currency throught loss of accounts, isn't enough to balance the amount of credits crafted by gold, in other words, the inflation, forging back gold from credits is a solution. You'd loose something throught the crafting process (you would get only 80% gold back, or you'd consume energy to craft or a third material required by the recipe) to balance the continuous switch gold to credits to gold, that players could abuse to transport gold without worrying about mass.

Halo381 reacted to Anonymous in What value does sovereign territory have in an infinite universe?
    Reality check.

Using our one REAL measure (Earth):

    Surface area: 501,000,000 km2

Dry bits (usuable "territory"): 139,870,000 km2 or about 29.2% of the total surface area.

Arable land - example only - obviously mining is different): About 55,948,000 km2 or about 10 of the total surface area...

And then to refine it further (for instance) when it comes to human settlement, historically something like 80% of all human settlement was within walking distance of salt.

Key takeaway - there is a crap ton of "territory" to be had in a setting like DU - you may consider this "infinite". But only (if modelled right) a very small percentage of that territory will be usable in some way and thus matters - Sovereign Territory therefore is really actually "finite" and always will be.

Sovereign Territory isn't about how much km2 you control - it's about WHAT is in the territory you control, or what controlling that territory strategically gives you access to or control over.

"I have nothing left to lose,
Nay, I want to lose nothing more.
What is life but a ruse?
What do I have left to live for?
More time will bring only rue,
More of life will leave me with less.
    I have family here, true.
But, beyond, we’ll all suffer less."
Kyle Susumu's Diary, last day of Earth’s existence.

Somewhere along the line, I lost count of the number of people I was killing. I left Eidolon to do the job of protecting my back while I cut the strings of fate of every hostile organism in sight. Was I selfish? No. Was I careless? No. Was I a mindless beast? Yes.
One after another, lives got snuffed out by my rage, my firearms and my hands. For all the bright flashes of light, the shouts of rage and terror, the sound of feet and ammunition and the stars that watched in serene silence, my mind was bent on only one thing: taking these bastards with me.

“You are the most stupid fellow I’ve seen all my life!”

I ignored the AI even as a shell blew up less than a score feet away from me. The unforgiving force of the explosion threw me into the air like a rag doll. My face was the first part of my body to hit the flaming frame of a destroyed vehicle. Surprisingly enough, I didn’t black out. I was no soldier, but I understood the benefits and dangers of passing out in the middle of a fire fight. As the pain coursed through my being, I longed for the benefits.
Struggling to get on my feet, I spotted a soldier coming towards me. His uniform had neither the insignia of the Resistance nor the design of the hostile forces. I barely made it to my feet before something snapped and I fell down in a heap. A chilling, electric pain charged through my bones as I realised what just happened: my spine had broken. I couldn’t feel my legs and the rest of my body was in too much agony for me to lift a finger or call for help. All I could do was watch him through the rage that clouded my sight. Where was Eidolon?

    “Are you okay?”

This guy had to be a joker. Did I look okay?
A bullet ricocheted off the frame, reminding us both that the battlefield wasn’t a place to chat. Then, he made the big mistake of trying to drag me away. If I thought I couldn’t speak, I was right—I screamed. Startled, he dropped me abruptly and looked me over with concern. That caused me even more pain. The stranger laid me on my back and crouched on the ground. Something exploded a distance away from us, followed by the short scream of a combatant.

“You have broken bones. Wait here.”

I groaned and managed to get some words out of my mouth.

“Don’t save me. Save them.” I looked towards the retreating soldiers of the Resistance.

    His face clouded.

    “I’m not with them.”

    I gave him questioning look.

    “I’m with the Earldom.”

What kind of name is “the Earldom”? Probably some conceited people with enough hypocrisy to pretend they didn’t want to control everyone else.

Vortex Two was trying to hail me through the communications device. After some quick thinking, I decided to answer.

“Vortex Two, find Petrovsky and track my beacon. Come pick me up in ten minutes.”

    “Yes, sir.”

I looked at the Earldom fellow one more time.

    “What’s your name?”

    “William.” He said, getting impatient.

Talking was hard and I was pretty sure the warm liquid I felt under my back was blood. Whatever had to be done needed to be done fast.

“Does the Earldom support these madmen?”

“Do I look like I support them?”

    “You tell me.”

He sighed and rubbed his face.

“I don’t support them. Listen, we’ve got to get you to safety.”

I was about to say something, when I saw a shadow on my chest.

“Put your hands in the air!”

William looked up and aimed at whoever was commanding. I could tell it was Petrovsky, although I couldn’t see him.

“Petrovsky! This…man is not an enemy!” I almost choked on my blood, before William raised my head a little.

The Russian came into sight, along with four other Resistance members. I knew there were more, but I couldn’t see them. Where was Aditi?

    “Where’s Aditi?” I asked him.

He bent down and looked me in the eye.

    “She’s dead.”

“What?!”  I shouted before gurgled breathing reminded me that I was still going to meet her anyway.

He looked at William and I answered the question.

“He’s with us. Take my wrist band. It has a beacon in it. Take it and get out. Vortex Two will pick you up.”

He sensed the message right away.

“You want me to leave you here?”

My eyesight blurred for a second and I spat out more blood.

“I won’t be of much use. But you, you can help them. My spine’s broken and I’ve lost too much blood. You’re standing in it.”

He looked at his feet and barely managed to hide his shock.

“I will not leave you here.”

    William gave an irritated sigh.

“Don’t save me. Save your men. I’m dead already. Get out: Vortex Two is searching for you and they already have the beacon’s signal.

Don’t let them come here, don’t let them find me.”

Whatever he wanted to say, he kept it and nodded solemnly.

“You are too good to die alone.” He whispered and stood.

My vision darkened five shades and I just had to close my eyes.

    “I’m not alone. They’re with me, they’re waiting. Go, Petrovsky: I won’t forgive you…if they come…”

The sounds became distant, but I heard them leave.
The explosions faded into muffled sounds as I tried to open my eyes one last time. All I could see where the stars, twinkling and shining. I had brought the legacy of Oethe to this planet. I had succeeded in my job. Did Eidolon know that I would die? Where was he?
A crackled voice spoke gently beside me. It was Eidolon.

    “Goodbye, Grand Architect.”

I grunted and caught a last glimpse of the stars.
Kyle, Nora, Jeane, Meera and the rest would be waiting for me, I’d finally get to see everyone again.

That was where I was headed now. My final resting place.

There seems to be a lot of debate here about the skill system, but to clarify, NQ has said it will be time based like Eve Online.

I am personally a fan of this type of skill system, as it guarantees nobody will ever be a master at every skill tree, and it's flexible enough that people can choose what they want to specialize in doing. It also keeps new players from buying their way into ships and other things they don't have the skills to use, and it reduces the pay to win potential.

I know some people aren't fans of a time based skill system, but I'm 100% in favor of it.
