For starters, Congrats NQ for trying to communicate and doing it.

Right now you(NQ) have got yourselves  some room to move. Most of us will wait for a while before falling hard on you again.
And, It is quite important that we see some problems of the game being pointed out as "problems" by you.

The main change yet to see in communication is: When S hits the fan next time, and it will (bug, patch, priority, ban, exploit), will you remain communicative as we see right now? Or will we see more of that silence that we know so much?

About this part 3, some ppl have said it already and i agree:
Reducing pain is part of the task, but its not worth much if there is no fun at all.

NQ, ask yourselves  as players, not as devs.
Where is the fun part of the game? Is that "fun" durable or repeatable? Or restricted to the weeks 1 and 2? Or only for late game? Is this "fun" available to everyone? Or just big org members? Or just pirates? Is this "fun" enjoyable by most kinds of players? Or only grinders, builders or PVPes? Is this "fun" paid with a heavy sadness from other players? To me the game is not fun at this point. And I have all the quanta and resources I will ever need.

Sure its fun to build a XS core. But above that, either I'm just joking around or it becomes complicated and not that fun.
This building fun will not keep me in a joy state for the next years to come.

Same as mining. 1st week of mining its actually not that bad. I found my self learning about how tools work and took pride of finding nodes faster than other ppl.
It was also a joy to receive my 1st paycheck from selling my ore. Knowing I could build something out of my earnings.
But can this joy fulfill me for years? Of course not.
How will automining increase my joy? 100% better than grinding all day, But by it self, brings no joy, just reduces pain.

How about the economy? Well, wining in the economy can bring some joy, sure. But at the expense of several others losing. While it brings diversity and an alternative way of playing the game. it is quite neutral in joy creation.
And with few big orgs doing most of the profit, joy is very limited...
Those big org members are working hard to be perfect. This is not that enjoyable. And competition is being squashed.

PVP is much like economy, quite neutral, or even negative for joy. For any winner there is a loser. For every loot gained, there is a huge frustration generated by loosing allot.

Again, cutting down on pain is Very Positive, and thank you.
But you still need to generate fun.

So here are some "easy" to implement suggestions for fun creation:
PVP duels/arena. Some place where ppl can go and shoot each other, with (informed) consent and with little to no consequence.
With both players being able to bring back their ships after the fight
Directional voice chat. RP is very important for sustainable fun. Being able to say some words to the surrounding ppl, or to your ship, is quite important,
NPCs and NPC loot is a must. No way around this. The only way to have a "positive joy balance" is to transport most of the sadness to NPCs.
I know this is hard to program. But start with dummy stuff. With little or zero AI, Like:
A Static station with just auto-firing turrets that will shoot at anyone in range. With a loot box inside.
Or a Non Voxel ship, simply a custom-made 3d model that will have an HP bar and will shoot at ships. When it blows up, a container with loot is spawned.
Or simply spawn loot boxes and clues to those around the map.
Make it easier for ppl to move around. A good amount of joy comes from social interaction and team gameplay. But its quite hard to have team gameplay when someone needs 3 hours of millions of quanta in warp cells to come joy the team.
Fast travel is needed. In a way that it can only be used for avatars and never for cargo.
One idea is to UnNerf the surrogate.

    You said:
"There’s a delicate balance to strike between staying as true as we can to the original vision, making smart design and production choices, taking players’ feedback into consideration, and creating more opportunities for community engagement. The game needs to be challenging but, most of all, fun. It can be a tall order sometimes, but not an impossible goal"

I say: Screw the original vision.
Most has been proven to be a sad failure:
Players don't give a damn about building any kind of civilization, they just want to fulfill their joy or close DU and run another game. Player exclusive economy is making every little guy being squashed by big orgs. Player made content made players quit because of lack of content. Instead, do what you must to make this work. To make us feel joy.

    Good luck.

My sugestion is very simple to implement and solves all your voxel problems:

Make copy & paste of voxels to be a text format(yml, json or xml) in windows paste memory.

    That way you could:
Copy your in-game voxels and paste them on a notepad file.
    With that file you could:
    save for later use
    store it in git
    share it with friends
Open in a community made 3d editor.

    @DekkarTV
Im talking of near zero exploration content + very high stakes + unbalanced game giving exponential advantage to older players that translates into pain with no reward.
And why will the mainstream MMO player pay a subscription to experience pain...

    @Perry666
Ppl like dekkar are part of the problem.

During the alpha stage some of us explained in a very detailed way why some parts of JC's vision were flawed.

I personally commented, in more than 10 seperate occasions how it was impossible for mmo players to build a civilisation without some basic enforced guidelines, like EVE security zones and NPC missions.

But when 1 of us explained a problem, 3 guys like dekkar totally destroyed our threads..
From, 1 of them, counter argument with very unlikely exceptions and the other 2 agreeing with him.
Passing by the old: "you dont understand the vision"
And sometimes ending in personal accusations or offenses to make sure the topic would be locked.

JC, with his huge ego, failed think about the problems we were presenting.

For many years, ppl conplained about "pending operations" but in my head, that was never a real problem. Because solving the "pending operations" issue was a technical challenge that was 100% solvable, just needing time. (i even created a major thread about UDP and suggested NQ to buy some already established protocol+api instead of trying to invent it. Coincidently a few weeks later NQ changed the protocol to minecraft proto)

The real problem was the hostility of the game to new and lone players.

The current model of players do everything allied with the average type of MMO player creates a universe between anarchy and ruthless dictatorship.

With the time investment needed to have a ship and the very high chances of total loss when going outside of the pvp free zone, this game is just a massive maker of pain.

Pure socialism does not exist in the world, in the exact same way that pure capitalism does not exist in the world.

Capitalism is the "right" extreme of the same scaled metric that socialism is the left "extreme"

So countries are defined by a pseudo % of capitalism and socialism.
A raw % could even be defined by the amount of the economy that is affected by socialism compared to capitalism.

One could say that Country A is 10% socialist and 90% capitalist, while Country B is 60% socialist and 40% capitalist.

But trying to glue "socialism" to "dictatorship" is a childish move that may have some effect in the north american continent but not to the rest of the world.

EU countries apear to be economically successful and have a much bigger % of socialism than american countries.

Even in the US, states with higher % of socialism appear to have a good economy balance and still offer good living conditions to their population.

This opinion does not mean im suggesting 100% socialism.
It would suck to have 100% socialism.....

I like that private companies make smartphones and computers and cars, etc.
But i dont want private companies choosing to not cure my illness because it is more profitable to treat symptoms.

But leaders and politics are to be chosen democratically by the population.

If the population wants to have a buffoon ripping trade agreements that represent alliances and saying that their country is N1, so be it.

If the pupulation wants to make sure that there is a minimal level of education, health and culture, to point their country to a better future, so be it.

For ppl like the OP, the word socialism is not what a definition says.
It is an insult. It is 100% synonymous of the enemy, of hell, of everything that ppl should not be.

A certain group of countries created this hate against this word to justify wars and commercial deals.
Now that the Cold War is over, a certain group of political activists use that word to fulfill their agenda.

Their agenda is simple, it is to discriminate everything associated with the word. To make any idea related to the word "undebatable" because it is evil. And everyone that does not agree that the word is evil is also evil.
In summary, the end of constructive debate...

    But back to this topic.
The op lives in this environment where "socialism" is evil.
And tried to associate some DU mechanic with "evil" to make it "undebatable"
I don't believe the OP knows what "socialism" is in any definition, and I don't think the OP actually thinks his complaint is about socialism.

He just used the word to have an "impact" tittle and some "support" from similar players.

I agree with you. A Snap option should exist.

As a workaround, and not taking any merit from the underlying issue you pointed, you can find a single voxel as a reference point to place grid of elements.
If all the elements are aimed at that specific place of the voxel, and you do the rest of the movement with the arrow keys and pageup pagedown you will be able to perfectly align elements.

On the underplaying issue, I have a suggestion.
Create snap grids. Not just one, but a mechanism that allows for its creation and storage of snap grids.
Like, having a menu with a list of snap grids where you could add, delete, use snap grids.

When pressing "add" you would have to aim at any voxel of element surface and click. That would create (and add to the list) a snap grid with that point as [0,0,0] and the inclination of the surface clicked as the grid orientation.

When pressing "use" every element (in your hand) would orient itself with the grid and arrows, page down, page up would move the element according to the grid.

This would be the basic. But in the future, NQ could even try to implement voxel tools to take the grind into account when making diagonal voxels.
Another good addition would be to allow players to edit numeric values that define the grid. Allowing for players to manually set the grid to exactly "45 degrees."
