When I fly across to MTI, (super developed section near Market Place 3 on Madis) my game becomes very chuggy... Frame rates drop to the 20s and are are often 1/2 second pauses every few seconds which make flying at high speed perilous.  It's not anything like their "in game footage" trailers even with a top end machine.
    I play at 1440p.

For reference, my main system is fairly high end 5900x / RTX3080 / NVME PCIE4 980PRO / 64GB 3600 DDR4 RAM on Gigabyte X570 Aorus Master.   So it's not lacking in any department and there are no real bottlenecks.
I use basic PBO but don't really overclock at all, the extra heat for just a few % points speed is a waste of effort, IMHO.

The 12 Core CPU and graphics are at about 50% total load and temps are nicely under control.

My previous box which I run my alts on is 4770K / GTX1080Ti / 2 x 512Gb SATA 960EVO RAID0 / 32GB 3200 DDR3 RAM on Gigabyte  Z97-UD7-TH. All stock with 3.9GHz clock. DU is a hideously heavy load and even slight overclocking can push CPU temperatures into the stratosphere, apparently due to AVX use... This game is like running a permanent benchmark.

The 4 Core CPU is permanently pegged at 100% and the GFX when at 1080p is about 70-80%.
It suffers the same 1/2 second dropouts and frame rates in the low 20s and sometimes <20fps.

An internal SSD is basically a must these days. Don't even think of using an HDD and avoid external SSDs if they're not connected via thunderbolt.

RAM usage is about 19Gb on both my machines, with just DU and Discord running, so as @Paolo80 said above, I think that 16Gb is probably asking for trouble, or even if it works, the amount of cacheing available significantly reduces and along with it, performance.

My computer is in my school's classroom, so I use our 2Gb/s low latency fibre connection.

Thus I think the problem is on their end in any case and as @CptLoRes said, it's indeed better than it was.

    I wouldn't have considered GfN... That's a good suggestion by @DrDerp .

You could try and play a session on GeforceNow. If the issues still occurs on the same spots, it might be server-/enginewise. If not, it might be your hardware

Yes, it is a thing. Lot's of players struggle with game lag/crashes especially when coming close to central hubs like popular markets etc.
And believe it or not, this is the improved version. Used to be much worse earlier.

When i fly near buldings i can see my computer is warming up. I got RTX 2070 Ryzen 9 3900 and 48 GB ram . GTX 1660 and Ryzen 5 3600 should be bearly enough but 16GB ram is not enough for shure. That can cause frizes. Also External SSD is disaster in my opinion. You got Fast drive but connected via slow cable. I only use M2 SSD on bord that have more than 3GB/s transfer.
So to sumarize i think your PC is to week for smooth fly near planet and buildings.

I still check on my base on Alioth and ship from time to time, but I don't play for long periods of time anymore.

My reasons? I have other priorities (such as other games - I know, lame excuse) but I guess there's also a lack of incentive to explore around. I've been all over Alioth, Madis, Thades, and Jago, and explored space extensively. I've used a surrogate to explore the Free Port on Teoma and the Utopia Space Station. But I think I've seen a lot of stuff in Dual Universe now such that any further discoveries don't feel...."new". So yeah. Not worth it to log in except to check on my stuff briefly.

too bad it's absolutelly the worst time to buy SSD right now due to the bloody chia coin craze.

most worth-a-while SSD's  are either hopelessly sold out or selling for insane prices.

example: Corsair Force MP510 (nvme) 1.9TB drive  which until recently had very much one of the best  price/size/tbw/speed ratios
which i used to buy for about 240E a pop till late april, now sells for 440E... same situation with 1TB+ samsungs

As @Habitant said above #1 is SSD.

You can get any current midrange Intel or AMD CPU with 6+ cores and that will be plenty for most games.

Let's just assume that you won't be squeezing blood from a stone and trying to get a GPU, but rather hang on to what you've got. Prices are in an unholy place right now.
If you can wait a little and have a poor IGPU (Integrated GPU on the chip) setup right now you might want to wait for the Ryzen 6700 (IIRC) which will come with VEGA 8 graphics built in... It's not a racehorse, but it should be better than current offerings.  You'll need an AM4 motherboard, obviously.

If you're not changing your CPU/GPU then at least these two things make the most sense regardless of your setup:

    SATA or NVME SSD
    2x16GB RAM

    SSD:

I will NEVER buy a PC with application/OS storage on spinning rust (HDD) ever again again. Full Stop! Just don't punish yourself or your PC like that.
SSDs make a world of difference and can be well over x10 faster than HDD in some scenarios.

Don't fret if your motherboard doesn't come with a dedicated PCI (M2) NVME slot for an SSD. You will get 90%+ of the performance boost of SSD from merely replacing your SATA HDD with a SATA SSD and won't re that much difference moving up to PCI based solutions unless all your other components are top notch.
However, if you do have an M2 slot on your motherboard, there is little point getting a SATA SSD right now since the price difference is minimal.

Get a quality SSD with DRAM cache (i.e. not DRAMLESS) 512Gb seems the sweet spot for performance/durability vs price right now.  I always go with Samsung EVO and have never replaced even a single one yet since 2016.  But of course, YMMV.

    RAM:

32GB of RAM or more will give you an all-round smoother performance and reduce wear and tear on your SSD due to swapping data off and on to the disk when RAM is full. (Make sure you get 2x16Gb to give you dual channel and to let you expand with another 2x16 down the line if ever needed for future proofing.)

Don't worry about super expensive overclocked RAM it makes at most only a few % difference to speed in some cases... just get any decent branded RAM like Patriot, Corsair or Crucial and at the stock speed recommended for your CPU.

    FINAL, PRO TIP:

Despite all marketing claims, RGB DOES NOT actually boost performance of the attached component by 50% ?

I used to be able to play this game with very few technical problems. But now when I fly around I get lag which can be lethal in some cases.

I looked at the system requirements and the recommended RAM is now 16 GB and GTX 1080 (8 GB). I do have the 16 GB requirements fulfilled but my GPU seems a bit lacking (I have a 1660 which is only 6 GB.)

Do you think I should upgrade my computer for a better experience?

    I never said 32gb was a requirement.

But with memory leaks all over the place, the memory usage will slowly increase.

From my m8s experience, players with 16 or less were having crashes in a 3 hours interval.
While ppl with 32 or more were were able to play for 5 hours and usually had to restart the game duo to performance issues instead of crashing.

Of couse that several other factors are involved in here.
Other crap installed in your computer, like streaming, anti-virus, having 9999 tabs opened in Chrome...
Gameplay style. Traveling to markets frequently, using surrogates to instantly load new planets. Or simply staying still in a empty place.
    Cache settings and speed.
    Page file settings.
    Internet speed and latency

All those things will influence performance and how often a game crashes.

But having more ram will help.

    1) SSD is a must
    2) More than 16gb or ram would be great but 16 should be ok as other players also didnt have any problems and it was running fine.
    3) Pagefile is useless ( it was meant for windows xp) me thinkees
    4) Graphics card greatly improves gameplay ! The more memory the better but a lot expensive nowdays
    5) Set CPU core use at 2 cores in settings (custom)
    6) Market 6 loads a bit slow so dont count on that

    Hope that helps...

I would say that 16gb is dangerously near the limit.
All ppl i know saw a big improvement in stability in upgrading to 32GB.

Having a NVME ssd is also a good upgrade if you dont have it already.

    Quests.

Most PPL here found this "wander" moments by chance or curiosity.
NQ could make admin sponsored quests focused on PPL experiencing this moments:

    "
    Find the lost medallion
    Reward 100 000 quanta

An Ark explorer lost the family medallion he brought from Earth, 10000 years ago in a cave complex underground.
Go to the waypoint and look for a container with the medallion side.
Bring the medallion to any market
    " -> explore underground caves

    "
    Repair Freighter ship
    Reward 200 000 quanta

We received a freighter SOS call. The captain reports that his main engine is down and he has no means to repair it.
Go to the freighter waypoint, match tier velocity.
Approach the freighter via EVA and repair their main again
" -> EVA at high speed (scary)

    "
    Urgent market resupply
    Reward 50 000 quanta

A special package, needing a special container needs to be transported between market 5 and market 10, but the package needs to be delivered in less than 5 minutes.
Get the package at market 5
    Reach orbit
Deliver the package in market 10
" -> See planet from a close orbit perspective.

To me, the moment i get a "sense of wander" is when i achieve a stable, circular, low orbit (8km alt) and i exit my seat, open the side door and look at the atmosphere of the planet below.

It looks so close, i feel like i can reach it with my hand.
I stay there for 1 or 2 minutes looking as the planet surface passes by below me, in wander.

Then i see my destination raising from below the planet's curvature and its time to go back to my seat and initiate slow down maneuvers.

One of the most important things about a sandbox game - or just about any game, really, is interactivity. To be able to influence the game environment through your actions, and in turn, the ability of the environment to have an effect on you...that is one of the most engaging aspects of games.

Do you feel Dual Universe is a very interactive game, currently?

What can be done to increase the amount of interactivity in this game?

I think Dual Universe is quite interactive, although the degree to which it is can still be improved. While you are able to change your environment in a variety of ways through the build mode, I still think there could be thing to improve the level of interactivity in the game.

Take for example, the presence of water. While some objects are able to react to water, not everything does. The avatar is unable to do things like swim or float in the water, for instance. But this is just one example.

I guess to start off, I didn't know it would really click with me because the game was primarily first person. I had a history of not being able to get into first-person games such as Goldeneye 007 and Elite Dangerous. However, this was balanced with my eagerness to find a good science fiction space MMO to call home. I was envisioning this game would let me explore the universe and encounter people and all sorts of things as well.

I also liked the concept because I was into Second Life, a sandbox virtual world that allows building. (I also found out about this game from a Second Life forum.) I also liked the somewhat vibrant colors - they seemed welcoming to me.

Despite it's faults I'm glad I played this game. I enjoyed my time in game and forums are entertaining as well. I am grateful for NovaQuark for this very unique experience they created.
