Alright I had my hopes up because the REALLy buggy hole at the parts warehouse looks fixed but over at one of the manufacturing plants I found:

and of course there has always been this

I did not see some of the old ones but not sure if that means that is fixed or that I don't know how to "trigger" it.
Gaelyn just now mentioned that he is still getting it on his MTI cathedral.

I'm having an awesome day.. Got my MSRP RTX 3080 back from repairs last week and managed to get it running... My old GTX 1080Ti is back in my secondary machine for dual boxing...

Now my card is back in my latest build, I benchmarked my new 5900X vs my original 3900X which I used since last autumn...
Currently I'm transferring over my files to my new 980 Pro 2Tb...

My business has just broken its sales and income record at the end of last month ending a dray spot that started last April and I just sold a bunch of 10,000 yen 2020 Tokyo Olympic Gold coins I bought last year which were removed from circulation because the olympics were cancelled... They fetched $1500 each....

Also currently rewatching all five seasons of The Expanse from Episode 1 while drinking some excellent IPA

Things are swell! Life is good.

    And you?

I'm sorry, I've read that twice but can't quite grasp what you are saying... Probably the IPA I mentioned above kicking in... Could you explain what you mean?

I often see quotes like this talking about some nebulous cloud of white knights.... Using super-generalistic phrases such as "the community," or "everyone" when it was likely just a couple of people with a different opinion.

But I see this exact same comment on every single game forum I've visited... Elite, NMS, Hellion, SC, even GOF... Yet I rarely remember this supposed massive cloud of white knights descending from heaven... I merely recall a couple of overoptimistic players once or twice harping on about something ad nauseam until they got bored and left.

other popular ones are "I made a comment about xxx but was completely shot down by the community for saying yyy  and everyone made fun of my clothes, taste in music and my mama's weight and sexual endeavours."  Yet when you look back at the comment history, it was likely he got into a comment row with  one or two people and they hounded him for several comments.

It's also like those Youtube videos with a topic that people believe other people will find questionable that have a bunch of "cue the crowd of offended xxxx.... to arriave and say yyyy...."  But it reality it just ends up a raft of people saying "cue..." and the nebulous commentards never appear in any significant numbers.

Or it would suggest I came after 0.23 - just saying.

I guess the point was that, at some point, one needs to move on whatever that looks like for you. New players don't care about 0.23 and why should they. Like it or not the future of the game is not about the players that have left it is about the players to come. If the game is not interesting to the significantly larger community out there that have not tried the game then none of this matters.

Neat update yesterday.  Fixed the problem of sometimes NOT getting "Pending Operation" while I'm digging out this meganode.  Pretty sweet.  I'll be enjoying this process for much much longer now, which will obviously save me the hassle of finding more ore to mine.  So...... hooray.....

I think you are the first person to ever use the release of ED:Odyssey as a positive example.

It has been almost universally panned by the players, though.. (And I'm talking Saxa head office levels of salt, here, rather than just the occasional spoon of Woodwards gripe water.)

Odyssey is basically slated as a prime example of what happens when a company does NOT listen to its player base and goes ahead and creates a product that very few were interested in and releases it before it's even ready, without testing.

Here are some of the top few criticisms of the game.

    1) The game as a whole had all but completely stalled for nearly 2 years with almost as little progress beyond platitudes and a few very poorly implemented bolt ons that still don't work properly. Ostensibly the 600 person company were all focussed on Odyssey. Moreover, no details of what Odyssey entailed other than being "a significant addition of the order of being a completely different game"  To make matters worse Odyssey has literally broken the previously introduced landmark Fleet Carriers feature (arguably only really big feature released since 2019)... Nobody can move or navigate their Fleet Carriers AT ALL any more.

    2) The players requested FDEV fix the current game before introducing new features. Did they? Did they fuck...
NONE of the top 10 glaring issues and "permanent placeholders" in the base game have even been touched in the last couple of years:
Power play: complete joke... Wings: a joke...  Multiplayer: amazingly not compatible with Wings. i.e. a joke.   Group play instancing: still almost impossible to get more than a handful of people in the same instance... a joke.   Missions: same buggy logic and 10 lines of cheesy as fuck dialog since 2014. SRV (ground vehicle): same single shitty vehicle that supports a single mode of gameplay: i.e. shoot rocks, shoot ships, shoot buttons to activate. Nothing of any depth.

    3) A majority of the players in a poll that was answered by over 3000 players (IIRC) a few years back said many would be happy if they could walk around the interiors of the ship and have interior customisation... VR allowed you to look around the bridge or cockpit of your ship and it was wonderful to get a sense of scale and familiarity with the craft that had been called home for years... Braben had talked at great length in the KS about future goals of repairing and upgrading to your ship by hand, say during a protracted battle... Or EVA to fix parts external parts of your ship...

Most weren't interested in a full blown "space legs" PVP implementation, believing that it would divert attention from the actual issues in the game (see point 1 above).
But FDEV's videos kept going on about "Armstrong Moments" where you could step out of your ship onto land for the first time... It sounded actually quite epic...

But What did they deliver? You press a button and (insert Pythonesque fart noise here) you immediately spawn outside your ship on the ground... THE ONE SINGLE MOST REQUESTED FEATURE was not delivered: i.e. ship interiors had NOT been included.

The game plays like a FPS from 2010 and worse:

    4) Elite is famous for being one of the most grindy games in the world... FDEV mistook this as a compliment and the  actual Odyssey gameplay itself is EVEN MORE GRIND CENTRIC than the original game. and significantly more so.

    5) The new release is buggy beyond belief (I myself have still not managed to leave the starport I spawned in due to recurrent bugs meaning as soon as I try to equip my loadout the game dies) They had no beta at all and went straight to money grabbing full release that barely even works.

    6) Arguably one of the only features of ED to receive maximum marks from everyone and anyone who tried it was its magnificent VR implementation since it was designed around VR from the ground up. It was considered one of, if not THE BEST VR implementations ever made.
But no more... This one truly unrivalled, world class feature was squandered:  VR has been relegated to back seat status with no further thought or development in over 5 years. And to rub salt into the wounds, much of the new UI no longer functions properly in VR since no VR is done any more. They literally took the only feature of the game to be universally given a top score by those who tried it and said: meh, we don't need this.
Even worse: They have removed VR from the actual walking about bit... As soon as you leave your cockpit, the game reverts to pancake mode! THEY REMOVED VR from the one part of the game that would make it most spectacular!

Odyssey is really quite a poor example in nearly every regard.

Well fine, have it your way,  endless parking lot filled with meat-trucks, which would be slowly eroded by sun, wind, and rain into eery valley of menhirs that turist would visit for the religious experience, not knowing what it really was originally.  I would watch them from above and snicker as all those silly notions of what the site's original purpose was.

Any subscription model for a hardware service is lost money that is better put towards hardware. doesn't take much thinking to realize that mate

ok if thats the case then they must be a sinking ship and it probably best not support them by subscribing to the game.

yeah and in the server space Red hat serves the vast majority so lets stop taking out our bum and rubbishing Linux. going by your posts and i am fairly sure it is your posts in the other threads too that dive this down into a linux verse windows argument. this is irrelevant.

the reality is they should be. Linux users are going to extra expense to play their game and bugs are bugs. they should be fixed if you are going to charge for the service. especially if you blatantly saying that it is not worth investing time in it and in the other breath saying linux users should fork out an additional $50 per month in order to play the game. with that attitude towards potential customers and actual customers i will cancel my subscription to dual universe as it is clear they are to lazy to support and dont want linux users in their player base in any form. that sentiment is clear.

getting tired of non linux users putting this argument forward that the distributions are all different and a client has to be coded for each. the distributions are not that different to make development that hard. the majority of packages are cross distribution  and the ones that are not you can provide the binaries and can be compiled for each distro as needed.
the kernal for each is exactly the same. this argument only works in the hope that people either dont know any better or wont actually research to find what you say is wrong.
by splitting up ubuntu from other distributions is plain and simple to make the numbers seem even smaller than they really are.
the same could be said for DU really. there are 115,217,872 warcraft users and about 434,761 DU players so that means DU is only 0.38% the size of warcraft
and Eve online only 8523914 players and compared to that DU is only 5.1%
so i guess if we are going to use this line of thinking then DU wont ever amount to anything and we should all stop supporting it. same logic

but it’s likely that we are feeling their servers starting to strain under untenable load from all the digging that people have done.

that is why finally... after years of people explaining to NQ the flawed nature of their ridiculously pointless-and-redundant planetary voxel persistence model (or alternatively: stupidly believing that NQ had really HAD invented some never-before-seen data storage and retrieval methods) their 100% verbose dig record-keeping has come back to bite them in the arse.

it might also be likely that they just can’t afford the bandwidth/processing capacity any longer given they are down to just a dozen or so still-paying customers, ? and have turned down the auto spool-up rate/ max number limit on their virtual servers.

That’s because their “small team of staff” would be more accurately described as “team of small staff” since they appear to be about 13 years old judging by some of the decisions taken on graphic design textures and UI.

TBH. I don’t care when their “real” release is. So long as the game keeps moving forward at a reasonable pace.

that is really the only thing I care about: visible and palpable improvements coming regularly (I mean regularly in the colloquial, non-scientific sense) giving the player base a sense of progression and hope for the future.

A gaming audience can suffer either a relative lack of communication or a relative lack of progress without too much pushback . The trouble starts when the gamiers suffers both of the above simultaneously.

look at NMS as a shining example. Shoddy af on release and has just released ANOTHER massive patch. 3.50 Prisms, addressing some of the criticism thrown at the somewhat aged rendering and iffy art style (which I personally like, but hey ho). Finally the game will use some of the modern horsepower of those beastly PC graphics cards that some lucky folks were able to buy before the stupid-assed crypto bubble.

Most of my ship’s weight is warp core and fuel. Remember that fuel in this game is like liquid metal. You can float titanium, bricks, and granite boulders in it since it’s 5kg+ per litre.

only rocket fuel is a reasonable weight at 0.8kg per litre.

space engines are far more efficient than anything we have right now in real life, to be fair, though, so...

like I said earlier. Mass compression in this game allows for insane weights to be squeezed into those tiny containers, warping our perception of how much we’re carrying since elements compress down to just a few liters and there is no wasted space as there would be in real life.

let’s take Catalyst 3. I think it’s about 70kg per litre or something.

you can fit 1500L into a 1m x 1m cube.  That’s about 100T alone for something you could use as a stool!

Remember an XS square light in this game (size of a switch) weighs 70kg, too.

    a 5m x 5m panel of these tiny lights would weigh 28T.

since small things weigh so much in this game, engines have to be “wallified” to lift it all.

    basically balancing is hard.
