Seems we have a joker here. Please, don't forget that your behavior could have an impact in the game in the future. It's a friendly advice, you should stand down before some big organisation go figure how to ruin your game when it will be available. Are you sure you want to go that way ? Another friendly advice, answer wisely.

There is a really simple response to all of the people with brand new forum accounts who come into these payment model threads complaining and expecting NovaQuark to suddenly drop all of their business plans because they don't want to pay a subscription fee like the rest of us.

Nobody is forcing anyone to play Dual Universe. If you don't want to pay to play, then move along, because that is very clearly something that is not going to change for a very long time.

The rest of us, however, will be enjoying the game.

If you don't want to pay the monthly subscription I suggest an alternative.  go to the kickstarter page, and back the ruby level.

Hi MrStarWars and welcome on our forum.

It was planned to contact you soon, but as you opened a thread on the forum, this will be much easier as it will clarify some points for all other members as well.
There are many fans of Starwars in the Dual Universe Community.

However, while we want to give as much freedom as possible to the players, Starwars material is copyrighted.

To copy openly the Starwars Universe as much as you do, we can't allow that for several reasons:

    - The most important one is copyright infringement. As the community portal has a goal of promoting player-generated content, you can't use copyrighted material (not made by you) to promote your organization. In fact, to do the things well, you should ask permission to the author for each material not made by you (even if it's not copyrighted), to use it for your organization.
    - Using Star Wars material can be extremely misleading for newcomers: We are NOT a Star Wars game. Dual Universe has its own story, and while we can understand you really love the Star Wars Universe, our game is not the right place to recreate it.

So in short, you can't use material with iconic characters or spaceships and the same applies for words like Palpatine, Darth Vader, and such.
You can reproduce in Dual Universe a social/political structure similar to the Empire in Starwars, but you can't say "Hey this is Starwars!"

Getting inspiration from the Starwars style for your spaceships can be tolerated, but you must keep in mind that at any moment, if we receive some complaints from Starwars copyright owners, we will have to remove it. This is the risk of copying something that already exists.

We didn't delete anything until now, because we wanted to get in touch with you first.
We hope you'll understand our position as we ask you to remove obvious starwars content posted by you on the Community Portal.
In the case you wouldn't do it by yourself within a week, we will remove it without further notice.

    Best regards,
    Nyzaltar, Community Manager at Novaquark

The_War_Doctor reacted to Anaximander in SUBSCRIPTION - Please don't make the game Free-to-Play.
As Einstein said, and this is true story : "Pay-to-Play is the only thing keeping the Universe together ~ George Washington"

Please don't make the game Free-to-Play, because as the industry has proven, every game going free-to-play ends up being ignored after 3 months of its release because it's consider another rip-off "generic koean MMO big-boobs female models" MMO that came out Korea's MMO factory-assembly machine.

As we are lucky, their crank on that machine has broken as of late and the flow has halted. Thank you Black Desert for that, perhaps you put the nail to the Korean MMO genre coffin. Lineage 2 kept you one foot out of the grave for all those years.

So, make the game Pay-to-Play.  Why? Because, as our adversaries on the Free-to-Play front have done, I'm going to providei inaccurate statements that may seem legit.

a ) Pay-to-Play helps NASA : Have you ever looked into NASA's budget? Neither have I, but I can tell with certainty, that they have aliens found and locked up in Area 51.

b )Lizard poople ruling the world . Have you seen one? EXACTLY, they hide very well.

c ) Who let the dogs out? UH?! Woof, woof-woof woof-woof!

    d) The fact 15 USD is a researched price of subscription that in 2004 seemed affordable and on this day, with all the inflation goin g on, is actually costing more like 8 dollars in 2004 money. But hey, don't stop economics science stop you.

As you can see, my years in drinking beer over my blood-alcohol level capacities, lead to some pretty constructive criticism of the Fre-to-Play model.

In all seriousness though, we need access to Area 51.

If any Free-2-Play people has anything to say, see this video first. Spoiler alert, I'm a Honey Badger.

Initially I thought it would be fall damage, but then I thought about being in alpha and how unstuck commands are usually suicide commands, lol. Hopeful for no invisible walls and falling through the planets, but I'm sure it will happen at least once. Once we are into live/retail though, definitely fall damage. Night time and cliffs/valleys = no bueno

Course, if we are armed.... I can't rule out that I wouldn't shoot the first person I see

EDIT: I love that no one thinks any of us will last long enough to starve or drown, lol!!

Are you serious? You want Pay-to-Win?

IT's a general rule of thumb in sandbox games. "Don't use what you can't afford to lose". In EVE, this went like "don't fly what you can't afford to lose".

It's a sandbox. There are no epics. If you are a roleplaying guy, don't go into a fight. If you are a miner, GET PEOPLE TO PROTECT YOU/. It's that simple. If there's no item drop, peoplw who make money by making implants and cybernetic parts will go out of business very soon.

It's a sandbox game. Don't ask for the devs to protect your part of the sand in the box. There must be a risk in PvP. If you are not willing to take the risk, don't PvP.

first I don't think this will be as big an issue as you are thinking for this game. This game is going to be more like EVE than WoW, which is what youre describing it feels like. The Devs cant really dumb the game down cause all they are giving us is a world and tools, and I don't think this game is going to have "levels" per say. We have research and skills we learn over time. This is adult space minecraft with eve's politics and emergent gameplay effectively. Because the only "end game" present in this game is the wars between players it wont be hard for new players to start and get on a semblance of even footing because in a few years I don't foresee a lot of new player orgs being formed, at least not by new players, so all the new players will be joining existing orgs with players who have experience who will teach them how to play. as an org can only be as strong as its weakest link.

Unlike eve and wow and a lot of mmo's out there this game requires team work. can you play solo? sure. Are you going to get screwed by almost any org in the game? probably

... the planets are made by voxels (blocks) and then they are smoothened around the edges to give off the spherical look of a planet. If you are wondering why you can't tell the difference, I'm afraid you'll have to spend time researching how game engines handle gravity points and local physics grids.

    In other words, magic.

    It's simple.

New player rolls in the game.

New player wants to be ground forces PvP.

He enlists as a Private in an army.

He fights and becomes a squad leader, division leader, platoon leader.

Two years down the line, the previous player who held the genrals position leaves / ragequits / wants to do something else. That new player now becomes a General.

And the salt mines run smoothly.

Spaceships, especially warships in the sizes of battlecruisers and beyond, will take skill and expertise for a faction to give you one to command.

    Same logic applies.

This kind of core gameplay, is rewarding and it only covers the military.

Trading / crafting / privateering, they all are staples and remain in the game no matter the years.

So, a veteran in the game, will only have his status as a veteran over a new player and all the social interactions that go with it.

You can't expect the devs to program players to have years of social interactions with new players. That's the only real advantage a veteran has in a Sandbox MMO.

I'll keep details of the servers setup for our various games in this post, currently we have a server for Space Engineers, and one for Empyrion coming online tomorrow. (Special thanks to Wilks Chekov for making this happen.)

Feel free to join the steam group, and add other people in the community as a friend. Also feel free to post your steam id in this thread if you want.

The poll had many varied votes, and several of you chose games other than Space Engineers/Empyrion. That's fine of course, and nothing can stop you from meeting up with other members of the community to play those games. Just join the steam group and have fun!

The_War_Doctor reacted to Tethrazor in Subscription model: Addressing the elephant in the room
Subscriptions are the only way to go. I find it so funny when people say that subscription games have failed over the last ten years. The fact is that F2P games have also failed. They might bring in some fast cash due to big spenders, but very shortly after that the game dies. F2P and micro-transaction cash shops are a cancer to MMO gaming.

Games do not fail because of their monetization model. Games fail because they are poorly designed. Take SWTOR for an example.

SWTOR started as a subscription game, and was VERY successful in the first 6 months. But then the hype died and most of the original player base realized that it was just a bad knockoff of WoW. Subscriptions fell for the next 1.5-2 years. At which point EA had to step in to save the game with a cash shop and an optional F2P model. The fact is that if Bioware had been creative and made something that was different and held the player base, SWTOR would still be on a subscription model and doing well. EA and everyone else continues to blame the subscription model for SWTORs drop in players. But the reality is, players got bored and moved on. I know because i was one of them.

DU has the ability do give us something truly unique and lasting. Immersive player driven content that is not scripted can provide YEARS of fun. EVE online is a great example of this.

It wouldn't make sense for them to sell ships in any capacity for Kickstarter, maybe blueprints?

Seeing as how it's supposed to take us several weeks or months to even build ships to get off the planet in the first place, giving out ships to kickstarter backers seems like it would cheapen that experience for everyone.

Blueprints I could see being bundled into a kickstarter, because I thought that all of us were getting some very basic starter blueprints when we first enter the game.

As long as those blueprints couldn't be instantly crafted, and would require some skills (that take time to train) to build the components that make up a ship, I'm okay with that.

Overall I'd rather them not do this, and not sell any ingame items like ship blueprints with the kickstarter. I'd rather see more out of game items being sold with the kickstarter, like shirts/posters/mugs/comics/art books/soundtracks/3d printed models/notebooks/etc. Things that we won't be able to get at any other point in time.

What I'm really wondering is what the higher tier rewards will be. Will big donors get sooner access to the game? Will they be able to talk to the developers? Will they have things named after them in the game?
