The_War_Doctor reacted to Anaximander in disconnect / lag / frame slumps
    Basically?

The more players are within a certain geometry, the more resources are allocated into said area of the server to compensate for the processing power required, by dynamically splitiing the server into sub-divisions (clusters) that operate within a larrger server cluster. Anythin g within that mega-cluster, is updating rapidly, while the rest of the unvierse goes on a slower rate of updates.

That is achieved by cloud-based server hosting. What the Cloud is, it's up to you to research, bottom-line being "many servers, computing as one", this als omeans though, that what you run (the ship you fly, has scripts, which you run, the wepaon turrets, have scripts which you oeprate) are run locally in your machine, hence, you become part of said Cloud-server. So, the server only updates locations and checks numbers, it doesn't actually run ANYTHING on its end, either it being script or fly patterns. The autopilot on your ship? Your RAM is the one that get's taxed, not the server's.

That basically means there's no real limit on how many people can be in a certain area at one time. If there are 100 people, it's like 5 servers ( one for each continent, I guess). The servers can be spun to meet the demand, while the rest of the unvierse is "fridged", when nobody is around.

Now, beyond that, the game's company can recruit more servers via the same cloud-magic, to reinforce its update rates and client handling. Let's say 100 people play in one area, from all around the world. The server cloud would be hosted in 5 servers, one for each region. If the players were to be 1000, that wuld need 50 servers. 10000 players, 500 servers and the list goes on and on.

This is also the reason the game needs a suscription.

    Cheers.

    Hi guys,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts here. The past few months have been a rough ride, indeed. We're deeply grateful for your support and your commitment to Dual Universe and the community. Every day, we're amazed to see your comments about the game on the forum and social media and seeing people getting excited about the work of the team.

@Yamamushi: It's totally normal to have some downtime. Various reasons can explain it and we hope you'll feel better soon. Thanks again for your general involvement and thanks again for your help in organizing NovaWrimo. We can't wait to read all the submitted stories Just take care, have some rest. You deserve it!

More generally, and as mentioned in the December Newsletter, we can't deny that the past few months have been both exhilarating and exhausting. The game's development is still making good progress and we would like to share more with you, trust us. However, as previously explained, we can't maintain the Kickstarter communication rhythm all year long. We wish it was possible, but with the resources we have at the moment of writing, communicating at this pace would just hurt the game's development.

We're currently working on the game's content and features but also on optimizing our development pipeline, our tools, hiring extra people and gathering more funds to make this happen. I don't even mention the Kickstarter and Crowdfunding Portal follow-up, the Customer Support tasks, the list goes on and on. This is highly demanding for a small indie team like us and everybody here at Novaquark is working hard to give you the game we all dream of.

We hope you all understand that we do our best with our actual means. Many of you have sent us public and private messages to wish us happy winter holidays and have a break. We'll indeed take a short break between Christmas and New Year's Eve to have some rest and spend some time with our families

And then, we'll be back to make 2017 a special year for the future of MMOs. That's our goal, you know it.
Thank you to all of you for your kind words and your support. It matters to us. The team is always happy to read your encouragements and feedback.

    Take care,

    Nomad

The_War_Doctor reacted to Anaximander in Choice of Game Engine
The why is simple. Unigine is an engine that fits the scope of the game. UNIGINE2 is an engine that can create amazing virtual enviroments in a celestial scope. Unreal is more of a "pretty looking but contained" kind of engine. What the UNIGINE lacks in graphics (something that is irrelevant when it comes to gameplay) it gains in size. You simply can't have the level of tesselation UNIGINE provides in Unreal.

Also, UNIGINE has some pretty neat tricks folded within it, that it makes it suitable for Aerospace Industry simulations. Let that sink in. You know an engine is good on its complex calculations, when actual, real-life engineers trust on its projected simulations  Bonus points for being russian Aerospace engineers,

I hope this answer covers your curiosity. UNIGINE2 is perfect for DU's scope.

The_War_Doctor got a reaction from Gojo_Ryu in Is scamming going to be a thing?
I agree. In game scamming should be allowed. sure look down on it or frown upon it if you like. You cant have a game that allows a player free reign to play as (s)he wishes, which could mean playing as a pirate. You cant have a pirate group then expect that a scammer is going to be punished. to me a scammer and a pirate aren't much different. Now if a scammer is trying to gain access to your account that's obviously very different but scamming you for in game currency or goods to me is expected of a game where there is player to player trading taking place.

A ) Unless you can provide solid proof of your alleged PR career, I do not believe you.

B ) Would you prefer JC Baillie to overhype the game without showing any pre-alpha proof of multiplayer? You want more Sean Murray perhaps? You miss being lied to I guess, cause that's what a meticulously crafted trailer is (I also guess you would know that if you were into marketing to begin with).

C ) I (and many others) praise them for not giving an F for "pretty footage". Three people built a ship, it flies, you can see pretty textures and a base layout.

I prefer the devs showing clumsy videos with what they already HAVE done, than ultra-edited hype fuel that oversell their game and will force them in a corner around release. If you want some Kool Aid in video form to justify your hype, that's your issue good sir, not the Devs' issue.

Better luck next time, your withdrawal wasn't even felt :V

The_War_Doctor got a reaction from Anaximander in How hard (or easy) will it be to earn DAC?
Im completely okay with the DACs following the same model as PLEX, once it is redeemed it should be lootable. there will be nothing criminal about it, a person who buys the DAC for rl money doesnt redeem it till they go to sell or use., and the person who bought it with ingame currency has to use it or risk it being looted. This stops ppl from just hoarding them to a degree which will stop them from getting outrageous in price

The_War_Doctor reacted to Danger in MagicaVoxel Editor - Easy prototyping for anyone
Ok, I've seen some people creating posts about Sketchup or even Blender. Don't get me wrong, they are great tools, but totally hardcore and not easy to understand by significant part of player base. I did some research few days ago and was looking not for perfect results (I will look for those later in game), but for tool that will allow me easy and fast prototyping.

    And I found this...

    MagicaVoxel (https://voxel.codeplex.com/wikipage?title=MagicaVoxel%20Editor&referringTitle=Home)
    - quickly prototype anything you want with cubes and save it as .vox (no slopes, but for prototypes it doesn't matter and there is way to auto-add them in the renderer)

    MagicaVoxel Renderer (https://voxel.codeplex.com/wikipage?title=MagicaVoxel%20Renderer&referringTitle=Home)
    - load your .vox and render cool pictures out of them to show your friends (allows multiple settings as shadows, background, grid visibility, etc.)

Some may say they want perfection. Ok, go use Blender. But those looking for prototyping can create really huge things much faster. I'm going to make tutorial soon and if you are interested in it, you are free to join the Alpha Academy. It's open community for everyone interested in the technical side of game and it's no problem if you are already in organization. See more in the org description or on our discord.

For the most part I would agree with you, with the exception of the starting area around the ark. I see a city forming around it because we will all be stuck on that planet for roughly a month and its going to be where all newbies come. so I see each org having a recruitment office and a thriving neutral market occurring.

The_War_Doctor got a reaction from BliitzTheFox in Food and Water
My thought was that it will discourage pvping to some degree. but not in a negative way. You would have to plan the logistics of long warfare for a large force or plan and build an agricultural ship that can supply the fleet. Which just adds another target during wars. gotta take out the agriculture ship as well as the one with the RN on it. But I see this as just another reason that people wont aimlessly start wars and such which i think people who are not interested in the pvp side may actually like.

My thought on the mechanics on your surroundings is that the suit would house a kind of camel back with water and it depletes at a certain rate at idle and while doing different types of actives it would deplete at a faster rates. The food part im not sure how that would be taken care of. i would assume that you would have to store food in your pack unless its processed into a paste that you drink through a straw in your suit. which honestly doesn't sound great lol

probably going to be pretty close to scale. But we will have better engines in the game given that it is set in the future. Im kind of hoping that the devs dont tell us. I would love for it to be up to us to figure out how far the next planet is given that when the game first goes live no one will be flying to space atleast for awhile.

It isn't about what YOU want, it isn't about what I want. its about what is needed to pay for upkeep. atm this game is funded solely out the JC's own pockets and a few investors. with the kickstarter now going that is changing to us helping pay for it. they give generous amounts of DACs for backing imo. the game isn't like WoW that charges you 60 dollars ever year on top of a $15usd sub. this game is free to download. free to try, if you like it you can either gain enough ingame cash to buy a DAC or pay the 10-13 usd/euro. as far as sub games go, this game is really cheap. If you don't want to pay because YOU don't think its worth it or cause you feel entitled, that's fine, but I kindly ask you to leave as its already been decided. no amount of complaining will change that.

edit: don't want to pay the sub? pay 400 to the kickstarter, get lifetime sub (thats paying 2 years of sub upfront plus you get lots of physical goodies that are probably worth atleast 150-200 usd)

So in comparison, yes, yes it is spamming. spam is stupid pointless annoying messages. while they may not be stupid or pointless by themselves they are highly annoying. The fact is you are pushing all other ORG posts off the community page which isnt honestly fair. continue on this path if you desire. but I know for certain you are creating enemies 2 years before a game is release. its friendly advise from other members of the community. Good luck in the future
